Whiteside is last no matter what
We haven’t had a chance to see him play, he’s also the most inexperienced.
Jackson is playing better than JT right now, especially defensively so I give the edge to him there.
Ideally you want JT to be over Jackson, but he has to play better first.

I still give the edge to JT over Jackson
Jackson has been a little better than JT (not a lot, but a little) in very limited time. I’m not ready to dismiss the past two years due to part-time play in three games. But I am intrigued.

wholeheartedly agree
JT is a worker and a force of energy. Casting him down and out will shatter his confidence. He has the ability and skill, for whatever reason it is just coalescing at the moment. The season is 3 games old.
Jackson has been playing well but is also finding his way and is prepared to be given minutes sparingly. He will get what he earns.
This is a team. They need to lift each other up, no matter what, be it (to quote a headliner on this site:) good, bad and ugly.

Good players...
don’t allow circumstances to ‘shatter’ their confidence.
But I agree teammates need to rally around each other. But the excuse makers on this board first said the player in the 34 jersey needed better front court help around him. And last night I read he is struggling because he is not used to the talent surrounding him. Ha-ha, first his teammates weren’t good enough, now they are too good!

Is this similar to Brockman vs. Hawes
because if we’re talking potential vs results, Jackson wins the results side hands down. And, if we’re talking about someone who brings something that the team needs desparately, then Whiteside brings the low post goalie when Dalembert is resting.
I guess what I’m saying is that none have won the right to play outright. They all bring something to the table. We all love hussle guys, but I think we all will agree that we prefer hussle guys to bring results like Omri.
If we’re judging this on current performance and not potential, I’d had to go with Jackson first. Just imagine him sitting down to a table of pancakes. We haven’t seen enough of Whiteside to be fair, but I think he brings something to the table that JT doesn’t. So, all I’ll say, is that if it’s someone to come in and work with Dalembert it’s JT. If he’s coming in to work with Cousins, it’s Whiteside.

is waaaay too soon to make snap judgements when we all know JT is capable of a lot more than he’s shown so far.
But so far, Jackson has been more than a ‘little’ bit better.

JT sucks and that's that! I am shocked everyone is so easy on him!
He will soon become another Hawes. I can’t wait until Whiteside gets more minutes. He can shoot the ball and he has a hook shot. Oh and he can block it as well as Dalembert . JT and Donte are like the brothers when it comes to playing basketball.
I like the way you think LK!
The player in the 34 jersey is losing out on time to a player who was waived and a throw-in in a financially motivated deal. Even I didn’t expect that! No disrespect to Mr. Darnell Jackson, as he has been playing great basketball. I loved the corner jumper he hit w/o hesitation last night. Swish! And he played roughly same minutes, committed 3X less fouls and TOs. As Upside gets healthy, and Sammy D minutes get upped, the player in the 34 jersey can join Donte as bench bros’ and twin towel wavers!

Exactly
What’s the point of not saying his name when you’re still hating on the guy.
Vlade Divac, the 24 year old [Redacted] center who reported to training camp at 250, 15 pounds more than last season's weight: "We all get heavier as we get older because there's a lot more information in our heads. Our heads weigh more."
This is the stuff that confuses the sh*t out of me
Whiteside can shoot, and he can block like Dalembert. This conclusion drawn in spite of the fact that this 2nd round draft pick has logged 2 minutes as pro…and he has 2 fouls (and nothing else) to show for it. For the record, I hope that you’re right about Whiteside. But there is a long way to go before that story is written.
Meanwhile, JT has proven himself to be a very capable rebounder. He has also been frustratingly slow to develop as an offesnive player, and he still guards with his hands way too much. Unlike Whiteside, he has proven that he is at least physically capable of making a contribution to this current Kings squad.
I am especially amazed by the Hawes comparisons. The deal with Hawes was always whether or not he was willing to put in the work, and he didn’t really mesh with his teammates. From everything that I can gather about Thompson, he’s one of the hardest workers on the squad, and his teammates love him.
Again, I agree 100% that JT has his shortcomings. But to throw out the baby with the bathwater is absolutely ludicrous, in my opinion.

Yep
Whiteside is going to get exactly what he needs in practice while he develops his body to NBA readiness. Until then, having a player of JT’s ability as the number 4 big is a luxury. He’s 2 games into his third year, and never projected as more than a blue-collar pro. Chill with the suggestions that he’s a bust.

In disagree
“never projected as more than a blue-collar pro”
You never draft lottery guys (unless it’s Sheldon Williams) expecting them to be blue collar pros. He has all the athletic and physical tools, but can’t learn and adapt to the NBA game/style, my opinion of course
Dannyboy
Agreed, but...
Etan Thomas, Vlad Radmanovich, Melvin Ely, Nick Collison, Robert Swift, Yaroslav Korolev, Hilton Armostrong, Thaddeus Young, Jason Thompson, Gerald Henderson. There are your last ten #12 picks (not counting this year).
While you’re always hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with late lottery picks, the truth is that if you snag a serviceable pro, you’ve beaten the league average.

Let me just say how much I admire your patience and perseverance in dealing with idiotic criticism. You know who you are a dealing with but you continue to try and make good arguments hoping for people to understand. I’m definitely not able to do that (that’s why I haven’t been stepping up as much when it comes to this crap). As much as it annoys the hell out of me, I’ve decided to ignore all this negativity as I don’t think it’s worth getting upset over it.
I’m not really concerned if this sound like me kissing ass because I truly believe it takes a lot to read this bullshit every single week and still be patient enough to try to deal with it. Mad props to you sir.

Agreed that JT is a hard worker
but how much time has he devoted to skills development vs. conditioning? I honestly don’t know the answer but he doesn’t seem to be progressing in that area. Has he spent any time working on his left hand? He’s had access to 2 big man coaches with Truck and SAR and most recently a 3rd in Otis so he has to have spent a significant amount of time on skills but we haven’t seen him actualizing it yet. It’s early in the season yet but it’s quickly becoming a red flag as you yourself pointed out. It’s way too early to throw JT on the trash pile but at the same time it deserves scrutiny.
"Live Long and Prosper." - Spock
His lack of left hand is most frustrating for me
Here you have a kid that was more of a guard/forward until his late growth spurt. You would think that this would be a part of his game that could be developed. Carlos Boozer’s ability to finish with either hand is why Boozer is so rarely blocked, despite being 6’9". A decent left hand would make a huge difference in JT’s offensive game.

Jackson is better than JT...right now
that could and probably will change, but that being said…I’m growing very tired of Thompson’s mind numbing fouls and countless baskets blown right around the rim. This is his 3rd year…yet he still plays like a rookie.
We are on the same page
At some point, you’re either going to get the NBA game or not. Darnell gets it and has limited upside, but he’s like a bib baby type guy. I love his knack for the ball around the rim. JT doesnt have that
Dannyboy
Wow.
To reiterate what others have said, there have only been three games so far this season. You are making large-scale generalizations and comparisons between two players after extremely limited minutes. Jackson MAY be playing better than JT, (you can argue that, I won’t) but 3 games do not make a career.
Both players have their drawbacks, their frustrations etc., but you are making a mountain out of a molehill, and you don’t have nearly enough information regarding Jackson with this team to make that decision. What happens if he turns out to be more inconsistent and frustrating than JT? What happens if he turns out to be injury prone, or clashes with players in the clubhouse? What happens if he is just playing out of his mind now, but then comes down to Earth in a few weeks? Are you really willing to bolster one player with such little evidence at the expense of a durable long-term big man who the team has invested considerable time and cost? What happens if he gets tired of working so hard and gets lazy half way through the season? i am not saying that any of these scenarios are solidified, but you have to acknowledge that any of them are certainly possible without further evidence to the contrary. Bonzi Wells had some great 3 game stints, should we lock him up too?
Lets not let frustrations blind us to the things are players are doing right. JT is a great and consistent rebounder and a fierce competitor and teammate. Yes, he needs work defensively and at finishing around the hoop, but the whole team does, and he has never shown any aversion to hard work.
"The Kings have nothing to lose but their games."
You know that this is a survey based on the first 3 games
since Jackson wasn’t on the team last season. And, you’ll be glad to know that no careers we’re injured as part of the poll.
Jackson has played 40 mins and JT 46 thru 3 games, so I’m guessing that the coaching staff is having a hard time deciding who gets the minutes also. But, I respect your effort to protect your guy.

Actually, I wasn't basing my response on the poll but on some commenter's reactions.
I wouldn’t even say that my response is all that positive about JT, if at all. Its not like I wrote some glowing appraisal of JT’s performance or bad mouthed Jackson. Furthermore, I DO think that playing time should be affected by how players are playing at the moment (i.e. if Omri is having a rough week then lets let Donte see some extra time).
My problem, which I have addressed regarding mulitple players, is that many fans, myself included, have at time let our frustrations with one player dictate our judgement, despite what positives that player may bring to the team.
That being said, Jackson is making an impact on games right now and should see some extra playing time for it. But implications that JT is playing “like a rookie,” or that he doesn’t “get the NBA game,” are exaggerated negative generalizations.

What a difference a year makes
2009 opening frontline roster – Hawes, JT, May, Thomas, Brockman.
Ew.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
We can't erase JT after 2 games.
Although Jackson really plays well. He maybe much less skilled than JT but he’s efficient, he’s strong and he knows his limitations. He’s like a major Mikki Moore upgrade. Thompson is still unstable and immature.
Interesting question...
While I still hope that JT becomes the better player, Jackson is playing better right now. Here’s the rub though – Westphal seems happy to give Cousins and Dalembert all the minutes at center (as he should), and Landry is going to get 30+ mins at the power forward spot every night. That leaves 15-18 mins for either Thompson or Jackson to fill at the 4. I think Jackson is more used to this kind of role than is JT – so it will be interesting to see if JT can adjust his game to being more of a sparkplug off the bench rather than a player who sees big minutes…

Gotta go JT, Jackson, Whiteside right now,
but if JT doesn’t step it up in the next week, I could definitely see him start to lose minutes.

It's hard to rank them this early on
Especially since Whiteside has hardly had anytime to do anything
Jackson is fitting in well but I mean come on, it’s just the first 3 games.
So overall I’d go with JT
but let me stress how much I’ve liked the play of Darnell
sometimes I think Kings fans want any reason to banish JT though, and I’ve noticed a trend where if he does anything wrong he gets incredible flack for it whereas our other bigs not as much.
Mind you, I understand it’s because of the consistency JT makes the same mistakes, but I’m not willing to give up on a young big so quickly. Especially one that can rebound well.

lotto pick...
needs to step it up soon. He has the chance with Daly hurt to be there…I’m guessing Cousins is outplaying him in practice and clearly the more talented player so he’ll continue to start.
I like his style but we are at the same point as Spence, we’re not giving up on him quickly…dudes been in the league a few years now, he’s a mature big already and needs to develop and refine his game rather than get worse.
Dannyboy
I still give JT a slight edge over Jackson
But I think it’s a nice problem to have, and we’re talking about the fourth rotation big in any case. The only real downside is on the development of Whiteside, and that will factor in eventually when you compare JT’s salary to Whiteside’s and figure you can get by for $2-3 million a year less and not lose a lot.
It’s kind or ironic that not long ago there were a surprising number of folks here saying JT should start over Landry, and now he’s facing a challenge for the No. 4 spot after three games.
I think a lot of our young players like Omri, Donte and JT make dumb mistakes, but then they have a game or games where they redeem themselves for a while. That, unfortunately, is part of growing up in the NBA. But after a while, it’s not something you want to pay a premium for, even if that’s a mid-level rookie salary.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
