Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

J.R. Giddens, Donald Sloan Waived by Kings

The Kings have announced that guards J.R. Giddens and Donald Sloan have been waived, bringing the roster to 17. Five more players -- wings Luther Head, Marcus Landry and Joe Crawford and big men Darnell Jackson and Connor Atchley -- are fighting for 1-2 roster spots. Giddens and Sloan were ranked 4th and 5th in StR's non-guaranteed power rankings Monday morning.

The Kings also announced that Samuel Dalembert, Hassan Whiteside and Jackson will not play in Tuesday's preseason opener against the Suns due to injury. Pooh Jeter is questionable.

That’s too bad because I liked Sloan! I thought the Kings signed him to a one year deal?

by srt33 on Oct 4, 2010 4:25 PM PDT reply actions

It wasn't guaranteed

It hear it was not guaranteed.

What good is a contract

that’s not guaranteed? Seems like an oxymoron to me.

But why am I questioning. I’m glad the way it worked out. Sloan wasn’t any good in Summer league.

Peyton Manning's contract isn't guaranteed

He seems to be working through it, though.

Having a contract even one that's not guaranteed means he's getting paid,

and he’s covered in case he gets injuried. Unguaranteed only mean for the entire season. But, if he were to get injured and couldn’t play again this season, his contract immediately becomes fully guaranteed.

Unguaranteed money contracts are becoming more common place. Jeter has a 2 year contract but the 2nd isn’t guaranteed. Jackson signed a 3 year contract with only the 1st year guaranteed. And, more long term contracts have the final year either unguaranteed or partially guaranteed (see Erick Dampier’s contract).

Basicly, it’s a good thing for marginal players and owners. The owners aren’t stuck if the player doesn’t work out. And, the players get a chance to prove themself and maybe stay in the league, where they probably wouldn’t have even been given the opportunity if the team had to guaranteed the money for the entire season.

I think Head might have joined them if Jeter wasn't injuried.

I know some people here like Luther but I just don’t see where he fits in with the Kings. He’s a 6-3 catch and shoot player with limited ball handling skills and can’t create for himself off the dribble.

He shoots the ball well from long distance when he got major playing time (28mpg), but as a bench player he only shot 35% from beyond the arc. I don’t think we need another combo guard. One factor that’s often overlooked is you don’t always end up playing your man. So, while 6-3 might be mostly ok to guard your average 2, if you have to switch after a screen you could end up defending a much taller 3.

Donald should look at Pooh for inspiration...

Donald needs to work on running the pick and roll, work on defense, especially on the pick and roll, work on finishing strong at the rim. I see some Bobby Jackson in his game. Sometimes careless with the ball but has the court vision and first step. Considering the age difference between Donald and Pooh, Kings should keep tabs on Donald’s development over the next few years.
