Shareef Abdur-Rahim Named Kings Assistant GM

The Kings have announced that Shareef Abdur-Rahim is changing roles, going from the bench, where he's served as an assistant coach for the last two years, to the front office, where he is now an assistant general manager. He joins Mike Petrie in that role, with Geoff Petrie and Wayne Cooper leading the front office.

It's unclear why Reef is transitioning from the bench to the executive suite. The Kings did add Otis Hughley as an assistant, but he was seen as replacing Bryan Gates, who left to join Monty Williams' staff in New Orleans.

I didn't see this coming

Let’s see how Reef’s talent evaluation is. He must have been helping in this department already to get promoted to a position like that.

Wow, congrats to Shareef!

A good man, and a smart cookie. Seems like he has a really high ceiling.

Woof?

When discussing two opposing point of views, the truth often lies somewhere in the middle.

He's gonna be who the Maloofs eventually sell the team to.

He spent all those years on the bench investing his money.

Maybe he can do a post game KHTK spot as well.

I have no idea what this means to for the Kings, but I definately know it's good news for Shareef!

SAR is actually in Berkeley often

I go to Cal and Ive talked to him on campus. He says he’s taking classes here but he also works as a scout in the area.

Anecdotal I know, but he used to go to the same mosque as I did back in Sac so he knows me by face

???

Not too sure what to think of this. I am happy for Shareef as he has been a class act since coming here as a free agent and I am sure he has impressed enough to deserve the bump into the front office but we seem to have asst GM/player personnel types coming out the yang and no one to my knowledge focusing on stats and metrics with Levien getting the can earlier this year.

Damn you Robert Horry!!!

To me there's so much more to player evaluations than stats.

I’m glad the Kings don’t make that the main focus. I mean, a player’s stats are influenced by so many other factors. You have to look at a guy’s stats and ask, “why are they this good.” or “why aren’t they better?” And it takes more than a statistician to answer those questions.

Don't bring that argument to GSoM

Yes

Because I’m sure if the team hired a quant analyst for the front office, all the scout types, like Petrie, Cooper and Petrie II would disappear.

With the same logic, I find it hard to believe there is no statistical analysis being done in the Kings front office as it is.

Certainly, Petrie, Cooper and Petrie II understand stats and take them into account as much as they feel is necessary. From Petire himself:

Are you a big believer in “advanced statistics,” and how do they affect your decision-making?

I like stats. I think they’re a big part of your composite evaluation of players. They are important beyond just the regular stats you get. There’s productivity per minute, productivity per shot, and all those different kinds of things. It still comes down to the fact that basketball is the most interdependent game and there’s a lot of different levels of how that fits together with all the different skill sets. I don’t think you can let stats completely dominate that, either.

Wierd.

He is always involved in the player workouts during draft time. Maybe he’s good at it.

When it comes to former players becoming coaches and/or GMs

it seems that on average star players don’t do as well, while good players/role players do quite well. I think Reef falls into the latter category, so I think he’ll do quite well.

Tough People Make Tough Decission's....

I cannot imagine the size of Ka’honnies it takes running full press (mouth wired shut) at an NBA level…not for one-play set verses actively playing night in and night out.

I cannot imagine matching this inscribable man up with a top-notch finance wizard.

A wizard that is always five moves ahead-by the way that is a major NBA "KEY".

They (Bros.) should set up a triangle decision making head-not sure about final decision’s…i.e. Get out of the traditional box trusting one person ‘thinking" they have both talent nose and finance savvy- sure, try to hire that guy! (BANK) Not many NBA street smart-book smart-smarty-pants around. Only a few have (long term) graced the NBA stage.
