Watching this live was unbearable
I rushed to get off of work, bought a ticket, and watched one of the worst games I have ever seen. I don’t want to get too long winded because I am still angry but…No ball movement…No energy…No in game adjustments…No crisp passes…No consistency in any aspect of the game. How can this happen? The Timberwolves played the Lakers tough in L.A. last night and the Kings have been off since Saturday. This is the third game in 7 days for the Kings…all at home…and they come out lethargic and flat. The Timberwolves are the worst team in the league, they are minus a point guard, and they are on the second night of a back to back, and the Kings still lose. I am one of the most glass half full Kings fans, but this was ugly, and inexcusable. All losses are not created equal…this one hurts.
Me too.
His second good game all season.

This should be a wake up call to Westphal
Between the 3 guard fiasco that he’s created to leaving Reke on the floor with five fouls and ten minutes left, his decision making was piss-poor at best. He also needs to be a bit more vocal with his players. I thought Adelman could be a pussy at times, but Pail lets too much fly without being vocal.

I have a hard time sometimes being hard on PW
Only because what do you expect when you go shopping for NBA coaches at the Goodwill? Honestly you get what you pay for & right now we have a bargain basement coach to go with bargain basement players. So what can you really expect?

Agreed
He’s better than our last two by a longshot, and there was definitely nobody else available at the time of his hire who was willing to come here. Believe me, I’m incredibly thankful that we got him at such a bargain, and that Rambis turned us down at the last minute. I’m just frustrated with the way he handles things sometimes, and he’s done a lot of that lately.
Frustrating to watch
I need a break from the Kings for a week or two.

Extremely depressed after this game.
Losing to the timberwolves is downright embarrasing. Giving up 42 points to beasley is disturbing. Professional Basketball players who cannot make free throws is head-scratching. Losing to the timberwolves is disgusting. Landry doing literally nothing is alarming.
…did I mention losing to the timberwolves is disgraceful? Because, when you lose to a team who’s front line contains Darko and a guy named Pekovich….it is. That is all.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

Hard for Landry to do something
from the bench. He needs to play.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
Kind of
There have been some things to be happy about, though. There is a good chemistry forming between Reke and Sammy (who deserves to be resigned over Landry, in my opinion), Garcia is showing that this could be his breakout year (that we’ve all been waiting for), Casspi is making better decisions, and we have a stud who’s finally found his team in Darnell Jackson. Spencer Hawes is no longer on the team, and that has to count for something, too.
On the other hand, we’ve still yet to have a lasting lead this season, our coach continues to baffle us with his terrible SF rotation, and the front court isn’t up to the standard we all expected it to be. Oh, and we just lost to the motherfucking Timberwolves. At home. By ten.
Here’s to finding Tyreke a good backcourt mate with our inevitable lottery pick this summer.
im thinking
David Kahn must be a genius in disguise.
he signed the worst and most hyped draft pick in milicic, traded for beasley, signed this dude named pekovich, traded their best post player in jefferson, drafted two PG who havent played together yet (and i dont know when) and neither played in the game. made kurt rambis look like phil jackson for a game, and still managed to beat us. wow. amazing
Yeah, we got Kahned for sure

I believe Darko now has more assists than Cousins.
i’m not sure, however.

So glad I couldn't see the game...
It sure is a good thing Donte didn’t even reach the 4 minute mark when the opposing SF is torching the team, and that Cousins played only 14 minutes against a team he can do major damage against when Tyreke is out for the final 10 minutes.
Darnell Jackson must be happy
and that Cousins played only 14 minutes against a team he can do major damage against
I mean, really, who is more important to this team, Cousins or Darnell Jackson? Way to show who’s boss, Paul.

A couple of observations being at the game
that I don’t notice on TV. Poundage…I think Carl is about 15 pounds heavier than last year and maybe thats why he’s not going inside. It could be he is a little slower with a litttle less lift. I think the exact same critique can be made of Donte. One other Donte remark …I have never seen a guy who looks so coordinated without the ball and so awkward with it.
My suggestion to PW…..pick your 8 most consistent guys and play them almost all the minutes. I can only name 6 that could loosely be called consistent; Reke Beno Cisco Omri Dalembert and Jackson….I will allow you guys to pick the other 2 (although I lean DMC).
I believe you will win more playing your best consistently than trying random combinations hoping you get something going.
There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.
Sometimes we play ten guys in the first half
And then we wonder why our offense rarely clicks and we dont play good team defense

That's it in a nutshell
I’m not sure why he’s given up on Landry after 5-6 games, but then again, I’m not an NBA coach. But I’m not sure he is, either.

I’d like to see an exact number regarding how many combinations he’s attempted since last season. Obviously, this is a new year with new (and better) players, but I wonder how long this experiment will last. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to admit that often we’re simply outmatched, or that certain guys have off nights.
Frustrating
But I’ve (we’ve) been through 17 Ws, and 25 Ws. The sun will come out in the morning with the team still a decent 3-4 and still better players in the roster than the past two years.
I’m pissed too but I still have hope it’ll get better (one way or another).

Eddie _ I live your optimisim, always have but I'm not sure I can share in it right now
I honestly don’t know what we have in the Kings right now. The players and coaching do seem better but right now I think you can make an argument that we’ll be lucky to hit 25 wins again this season. On the other hand just 10% of the season into it I’m not willing to call the season over and done for either. For some reason the Kings are not coming together as a team and I don’t get it. I think ElRon’s suggestion makes as much sense as anything right now. Picking a rotation and sticking with it makes far more sense than trying to capitalize on matchups which to date hasn’t worked.
It’s the players job to keep the coach happy, not the coach’s job to keep the player happy. - Paul Westphal quoted from The Purple Panjandrum
This is where I'm at
just 10% of the season into it I’m not willing to call the season over and done
Believe me, this is has been one of the worst stretches as a fan, but it’s too early. Once we get to the 20-25 game mark, then we’ll really know where we are at IMO. As frustrated as I am, I can still take a deep breath and wait a little more (just a little).
"Children want what they want when they want it." ... Andy Sims
Yes, it's early
But many of the frustrations with Westphal started last season, and it looks like the team is somewhat tuning him out.
Yes, it’s early, and we will certainly know more about the team by Christmas, and better performances from the players would certainly help matters. But I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that Westphal isn’ going to be around at whatever point we do complete this turnaround.
He’s a cheap stopgap interim, and it won’t surprise me if they give Elie a chance at some point before Westphal’s contract expires.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
Well, I'm glad my tickets were discounted, because I would have been pissed if I had paid full price to watch that.
I do agree with J Ryan that there certainly are positives to take from this game, but frankly I’m not in the mood to really dwell on those. Cisco was a beast. Dalembert was surprisingly effective on offense and beastly as usual on D. Bena and Darnell was pretty good. Omri had a good game offensively, but was getting murdered by Beasley – but everyone got murdered by Beasley tonight. It was a freaking bloody massacre. It pissed me off how Beasley kept pushing people around, literally, and not one call on him. The refs sucked. Carl sucked. Reke sucked.
On other news, heeeeey, guess who played tonight? Donte.
one more thing
Carl is the biggest mystery of all what happened to him hes not hitting jump shots anymore and he cant hit free throws eather what the hell happened to his game ??? were not gonna win if he doesn’t score
In other news,
K-Mart put up 31 last night. Great trade Geoff!
Well, no.
Landry’s stats last year were the worst of his career, and they’re even worse this year.
So he’s had a bad 40 or 50 games, with a few good ones interspersed in there at close enough intervals that people think he is still a good option at power forward despite being unable to make shots or hit his free throws, and being undersized.
The turmoil at SF is nothing compared to the Kings’ inability to have a solidly productive power forward.

Good point
But is Landry regressing or is he utilized in a wrong way?
Answer probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Dunking Dutchman
i think they should start Cousins at PF
bring Carl Landry off the bench
he was a great bench scorer for the rockets last year
maybe thats all he his
I think the Rockets had it right
He needs to be the sixth man, and he needs to play on the block, and we need to get him his shots. His mediocre rebounding and defense seem more apparent this year.

That could describe quite a few players
by MichaelMack on Nov 10, 2010 11:18 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, that's true
but still, some players are more comfortable with taking a bigger load on their shoulders on a mediocre team (and perhaps we will see this with Beasly), while others get exposed when they leave a good team and have to do more on their own on a mediocre team. Landry seems to be in that second camp. And still others will give you exact the same production, no matter where you plug them in. Dalembert comes to mind.

I do think
that Landry has a skill set and size that is fairly particular, and his production will depend on his team and system more so than a lot of players.
by MichaelMack on Nov 10, 2010 11:47 PM PST up reply actions
your right
they could use his spark off the bench, right now the only consistent bench player is cisco
Landry used wrong.
It seems PW is not putting Landry in places where he will be successful. IE – this offense (if there is one) is not necessarily suited for Carl. The bigger deal is PW and all his actions. Is he crap? Only time will tell. But it seems like only Beno has really blossomed under PW. Reke perhaps. I think a certain unnamed Laker coach would have these players understanding their roles and getting the most out of each. PW doesn’t do that, and it’s pissing me off.
Thanks for the outlet akyis
Those "bad" stats
were good enought to rank him in the top 10 of power forwards in PER last year, and he started off strong this season. The fact that we are starting to lose at the same time he is starting to ride the bench is not a coincidence.
This guy is a horse, flaws and all, but Westphal apparently isn’t smart enough to ride him.

Regardless of what happens
There were $34 million reasons to do that deal, and that certainly made sense to the Maloofs. Landry can still be a productive player, but it is hard to score sitting down.

I know its going to take time with him. I was just making the opinion that if he’s having a bad game, or somebody else is having a better game, then he doesn’t deserve the minutes, as much as I’d like to see him out there.
The trick is to find the player whose performing better consistently. Easier said than done.

can this officially be the end of the “JT at the 3” campaign? It should have never started to begin with.
What a joke. Landry looks lost, JT is as much of a 3 as Beno is a 4, and I swear the only reason Dalembert shoots is to bring a humor aspect into the Kings games. This is frustrating.

We held the Twolves to around their scoring average even with Beasley's 42.
So, defensively I’m not unhappy with the effort. I know this is beating a dead horse but like I’ve said in the past, PW looks for the quick fix by rotating people instead of coming up with a defensive scheme. Every player we put on Beasley, he beat off the dribble or coming off of a screen. So, obviously we didn’t have the players to stop him, and we should have changed our defense scheme to stop him. He was more affective jumpshooting then he was going to the basket, so we needed to play him tight, and send help once he put the ball on the floor.
I’m not going to criticise playing JT on Beasley, because he did as well as everyone else we tried. What I will say is that the frontcourt of Dalembert, Jackson, & JT was very ineffective on the offensive end. Because the three of them score around the basket and aren’t great from long range, it allowed Minny to cheat off of them and crowd the lane making it harder for Evans to penetrate.
And, while I’m ecstatic that Tyreke and Dalembert are starting to jell in the paint. We are still a jumpshooting team. For all of our improved size inside, we only scored 36pts in the paint. And, we lost the game because, Cisco, Tyreke, Landry & JT were 5 for 25. The team shooting percentage was 44%. If those 4 players shot 44% the Kings would of had 6 more baskets.
The instability of the lineups is hurting our cohesiveness as a team both offensively and defensively. We are not going to make the playoffs the way were playing. It’s time to put our best lineup on the court and let them learn to work and cover for each other. It’s time for PW to do what he was brought here to do, and that is teach and develop our young core. Instead of yanking them out of the game everytime things go south, and hoping that someone on the bench is the answer. PW needs to understand that we don’t have a defensive stopper other than Dalembert, so we need another way of shoring up our exterior defense besides lineup changes.

Westphal needs to go
I’m ready for the Mario Elie era to begin now. Westphal’s “I’m the coach and I don’t care if the players are happy” comments say it all. His rotations are ridiculous, and the way the team gace up late last night was a sign that he is starting to lose them.
Good thing this is the “soft” part of our schedule, because this could turn south like last year in a hurry if he’s unable to pull his head out of his ass.
I guess it is time to start sizing up next year’s draft.
"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal
I was a PW fan last year
He was clearly better than who we had, it seemed, but he is losing me now. I don’t like his attitude either and he is not getting this team to play like a team. No wonder when they don’t know their role and are jerked around, put into roles they can’t be successful at, and are told the coach doesn’t give a shit how they feel about it. I have worked for people like that and it is really hard to not take a “well fuck you too then” attitude. I guess the honeymoon is over.
I question if he really knows how to coach defense at all. I mean he seems to be unable to teach the team how to play together and provide help defense. His reliance on a defensive specialist off the bench tells me that he just doesn’t know how to teach and lead a team defensively. And if that is true then the Kings hired somebody who can’t do the job they were given.
I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...
I did vomit watching the game
but this is the biggest overreaction I have ever seen. 3-4 in a 82 game season, and we need to start looking at the next draft? wow.

What I watched last night was god awful, but maybe this will the be the Kings lot this year, stinkers against the T Wolves and an arse kicking of a really good team later on in the season, with more of the latter than the former hopefully. Maybe is the key word here
