Post Game Thread: Pistons at Kings

I'm pretty sure this was one of the worse officiated games in recent memory.  Still, what are you gonna do. Kings lose 100-94, their 5th straight loss and 4th straight at home.

All losses came in close games I think

With little improvement, we would have a very good looking record right now.

No loss is ever enjoyable.

However, that said, it is a move in the right direction.

Move in the right direction. Anything specific?

I didn’t really get to watch this game as closely as the last few games.

They showed some energy and passion

Unlike some other games.

They still dont know how to translate it into organized offense and defense.

This group is simply too young to become a group of savvy veteran players overnight. That’s just the reality.

I'm out

can’t sit through these anymore. I need to take at least a few games off. I truly wish I could get a refund for the quarter season pass I paid for, but I’ve got nine more of these to experience first-hand. I just wanted to give the struggling franchise some support… but now they’re punishing me for it. ah well.

So you expected a +16 win total? That doesn’t happen with one draft pick. DMC and Sammy do not add up to +16 wins.

Yes

I thought Tyreke was going to be a little sharper, OC as well. I also thought our size inside was going to make a bigger impact.

by MichaelMack on Nov 14, 2010 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like Casspi is playing well

I am a little disappointed in Tyreke’s performance this year, and our size inside hasn’t made a big impact because we don’t know how to use it properly at all. Hopefully we can figure things out sooner than later.

He’s just not shooting well. Seems to me he hasn’t really shot well since he went ballistic against Cleveland.

by PurpleLoco on Nov 14, 2010 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

I guess I'm just judging him in relation to the rest of the team

since they are shooting so terribly, his average shooting looks so much better than it really is. Man, it’s so weird to have a Kings team that lacks outside shooting like we do.

by prowseinthehouse on Nov 14, 2010 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

Especially since we should be decent at it.

Casspi, Cisco, Wright, Donte, Beno…we should be doing okay. Omri’s still shooting 40.5% from 3, but he was 1/5 today, 3/9 against Phoenix, 3/7 against Minny, and 1/5 against Memphis. Cisco’s shooting 41.2% right now, but was 0/3 today, 1/2 in Phoenix, 1/6 for Minnesota, and 3/9 against Memphis.

I have no idea what’s up with our shooters, but they need to get out of their collective slump, and soon.

by PurpleLoco on Nov 14, 2010 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yes I did.

Well Dalembert was a to win player per Dave Berri and Spencer was in the negatives. I expected improvement from Tyreke, Donte, Omri, and JT. And Cousins was incredible in college and I expected him to remain efficient in the pros which was a mistake on my part. We appear worse than last year to date, but I had much higher expectations. Also last season we were on pace for 30 wins, but the team’s spirit broke near the end of the season.

When does the expectation exist

That we should beat a team like the Pistons or Timberwolves at home? Honestly, is that really too high of an expectation for a season ticket holder?

I'm ok with struggling

Hell, I’m a kings fan, I must LOVE struggling! But when your defense is the worst in the league, it’s a matter of effort, not youth. We are on a rough slide against the dregs of the league… at home. What happens when we run into a buzz saw against the better teams in the league? If this is the effort we’ll see all year, then we’ll be picking in the top five in the draft, again. When you spend 1,000$ on tickets to games and drive from Santa rosa for each one, then you have every fucking right to bitch. And I’ll continue to bitch until I feel better!

In general the officiating was OK.

But if you want to make a conspiracy out of it, it’s not hard. The refs didn’t need to push Detroit, we were doing it on our own and when the game came close, they gave the call to the Pistons AFTER reviewing in the video… even though it was blatantly obvious.

Of course there’s no need to support this since we’re still a bad team and it makes no difference.

by ZenBaller on Nov 14, 2010 5:45 PM PST up reply actions

That call was not blatantly obvious

And Jerry and Grant’s whining was close to annoying.

I agree.

It was not blatantly obvious and the angle where you could “supposedly” see Maxiell’s hand on the ball to overturn it. It’s unfortunate because I believe it was pretty clear that Maxiell’s hand was on the ball, but the angle didn’t quite show the conclusive evidence needed to overturn that call.

That's how I felt

The angle that Jerry and Grant were looking at as conclusive evidence was far from conclusive. You couldn’t see when the ball left his hand.

The other angle was better and it was very very close, but probably off Maxiell. Not really a horrible call IMO, since it could have gone either way.

I wonder what the drawback is to the D-League that keeps teams from fully utilizing it?

Do teams feel the level of competition is such that the player will still learn more sitting on the bench in the NBA and practicing against league-level competition?

Post Game Thoughts
  • Well I’ve already mentioned the referees, but since a few of you are asking why I think it was bad, here are my thoughts. Two of DeMarcus’s fouls were bad in my opinion (one where Monroe grabbed his arm, and the other when he set up for a charge but called for a blocking foul), Luther Head’s foul on Gordon where Gordon threw himself into him was terrible, and that last possession where the ball went off Maxiell’s hand and the refs gave the ball to the Pistons was terrible as well. The Pistons took advantage of everything, scoring on key possessions, and hitting their free throws (79%)
  • The Kings actually got to the line more than Detroit, but only converted at a 67% rate. Its getting to the point where I almost want the Kings to spend an entire day just shooting free throws.
  • I loved how Carl is hanging out in the post a lot more. It proves that it wasn’t just a one time thing against Phoenix, but an actual change by the Kings to get him more involved and more efficient, and its doing wonders for him. He’s a monster down there. There were several points though where I thought we should have had him in the game, mainly when Thompson and Cousins were in together. I think we should’ve rolled with Thompson and Landry at that time to add a more reliable scoring threat.
  • Cousins makes some very poor decisions with the ball, and he needs to be more aware when he has the ball. He had a few times where he was stripped of the ball on defensive rebounds, which was unacceptable. Also, he needs to stop jump shooting and just take it inside, he’s also really good in there.
  • Jason Thompson looked good. This is the Jason I want to see.
  • Tyreke’s jumper looks good. His three looks better too even though it didn’t go in tonight. One of them went down and out, one was a near miss that was tipped in by Dalembert, and the other was a desperation off balance three at the end of the game.
  • Omri is getting a little Nocioni with his three ball I think. He needs to use his legs more often and not his arms. When he misses I notices the ball is a bit flatter trajectory than when he makes it.
  • Antoine Wright’s defense does not make up for his piss-poor offense. He cannot shoot, and there is a reason he was wide open for two threes and missed both of them. Detroit didn’t have to defend him. He was -8 for the game, so so much for his defense helping us out. I’d much rather see Cisco take all his minutes, or Donté who is a better shooter than Wright without giving up too much defensively I think.
  • Samuel Dalembert didn’t play out of himself today, and I liked that.
  • Luther Head is a decent player and I’m fine with him having a spot in the rotation. He missed a couple threes.
  • Detroit’s defense really had nothing to do with us missing our threes. We just missed them. 2-18 is pretty terrible, and it should’ve been 3-19 if Cisco hadn’t Mitch’d the last one.
  • Beno passed the ball well, but couldn’t get anything going on offense and his defense was pretty bad as well.
  • The Pistons hit some tough, tough shots at points. McGrady’s especially came to mind, and Ben Gordon got hot near the end.
  • The Kings hurt themselves big time by missing out on some defensive rebound opportunities. We outrebounded Detroit by 3, but 18 of our boards were offensive. That says a lot about how many shots we missed (had 10 more FGA than Detroit, but 2 less made). That one possession where the Kings gave up three offensive boards was especially egregious, even though Detroit didn’t make a shot during it, that still took about a minute off the clock during a crucial period.
  • Overall I think we showed some improvement and this was a step in the right direction. We missed a lot of open shots that we should normally hit, and if we had just hit maybe two more threes, a couple free throws and a jumper or two, this would have been our game.

Better game...

..but same result, unfortunately. We just didn’t make enough plays on offense or defense (or free throws) and the Pistons did. Somehow I don’t feel any better…

Beno’s defense…oy.

Ya, Beno getting burned again

I think that’s part of why Head got so many minutes tonight. The Pistons were playing pretty fast, and Beno didn’t seem like he could keep up

+ 1 just for your use of egregious

although after some deliberation I am not quite as accepting of this loss as you are. This is a game the Kings should have won. Period. The refs didn’t cost us the game. Playing a marginally better team at home with a score that was never far out of reach is a game we should win 8 times out of 10. Why did Westphal let the team keep shooting and missing 3’s when our reigning rookie of the year is a living, breathing, lay up line capable of doing much more than he was asked to do tonight. I understand that the team is young and that we have many new players on the team but part of the process is learning to win games that you should. Opportunity missed!

Tyreke is 4-16 from 3's for .250

Head is even worse at 4-17, and Beno is 4-23.

Cisco and Casspi are the only players shooting over 25% from 3pt range, and PW didn’t play Casspi for the last 14 minutes of the Game.

As of right now, Donte and Tyrke at tied for 3rd in 3pt shooting on the team. And, Donte was the 2nd best 3pt shooter behind Noc on last seasons team.

Oh, and congradulation go out to Wright who got his first 2 pts of the season in only 26 minute of playing time in 5 games.

I can’t imagine us looking less confident offensively.

Our body language shows me a team that doesn’t believe in itself much.

Tyreke needs to play with a lot more attitude.

by Hoops Mike on Nov 14, 2010 5:53 PM PST reply actions

It is easy

We shot 47% tonight and the Pistons shot 54%. If those two numbers are reversed we win by 15. We are really not a good shooting team and we don’t play shooting defense particularly well. Those two things are not conducive to winning.

Before I leave for the night

I know we did better tonight, because I’m not as pissed as I thought I would be if we had lost. That might be the beer talking, but I’m pretty sure we moved a step in the right direction tonight.

Its still early in the season, and these games have essentially been another preseason for us, due to the injuries during the actual preseason. Last year another young team struggled to start the season. Memphis started the season 1-8, including 7 straight losses (most on the road, but still). They ended up 40-42. I’m not saying that will happen to us, but keep in mind its still early.

He made passes, but the team missed all of their shots

That being said, he looked a little lost to me, and made some bad passes, and got caught leaving his feet before knowing what to do.

Yeah that was a big problem

It was something Walton mentioned in the Phoenix game, how Tyreke always leaves his feet before he passes, and thats not a good strategy.

Things I liked
  • JT seeing the light of day and being effective
  • Concerted effort to go inside with Top Hat and DMC
  • Better defense (with the exception of Beno)

Losing still sucks, but it’s less of a bitter pill when there’s signs of improvement.

Also, DeMarcus did not foul out, so I see that as a positive as well.

Talking Points

1. Where’s my Donte/JT hookup? PW will get the idea soon enough.

2. The guardplay was bollocks. Sure, Ty got his points, but inefficiently. Give me more Head.

3. Dalembert might just find himself on the bench relieving JT. Except for his shot blocking, of which he had only one tonight , he doesn’t do nearly enough IMO.

4. The Kings’ free throw percentage was obscene but the three point conversion was a Snuff Film.

What I've been disappointed in so far.

I think I had/have realistic expectations for this team this year. I want to see 30-35 wins which I think is fair. So far there have been a couple things that have been disappointing to me.
- Demarcus Cousins – There is no doubt that the talent is there and he shows it from time to time. But his body language is very poor. He reacts and pouts at almost every single call that doesn’t go the Kings way. It’s good that he’s yet to have a serious blowup but I hope this constant losing doesn’t get to him. Also if the reports of him being a problem are true it’s a bad sign. I still like the kid and hope that he matures quickly.
- Team Defense Effort – The team defensive effort simply isn’t there. Overall the team seems slow to rotate and is falling under the “Not my man” problem. This team looks like they give more effort vs. good teams (Lakers) than bad (Most of the rest we’ve played). Two players in particular have been disappointing to me in this regard:
- Tyreke Evans Defensive Effort – I try to pay special attention to Tyreke Evans on the defensive front and I have been disappointed. His on ball defense has been ok but nothing great so far. Where he really lacks is on rotating and closing out. Tyreke rotates slowly to 3 point shooters which leads to a lot of wide open shots. And when he does close out he likes to do a half hearted hand in the air attempt. His mentality seems to be like what we see out in pickup games where you don’t respect a shooters shot. Well in the NBA you better respect it.
- Beno Udrih’s overall Defense – Yes we already know this but his defense is just plain horrible. He can’t stay in front of anybody which makes the defense collapse thus leaving open shooters. I strongly feel that we need to bring in a guard to play with Tyreke and move Udrih to the bench at the very least. Despite what some argue his offense does not offset his defense.
- Coach Westphal – Some of the things he’s doing is just puzzling to me. Last year he juggled lineups and rotation minutes 12 men deep throughout the entire season. Now he is doing it again. Yes I understand that we have a lot of new guys and they are guys that will get their minutes so I do give him a small break. However how can he not be playing Donte at all??? These are facts: Donte made big leaps to his game last year. He was named the starter at the beginning of this season. He is one of the better perimeter defenders on the team. Yet he hardly plays now? This early in the season? Come on coach! Is he that much worse than Casspi? I feel like Donte should’ve gotten a longer chance to try and contain Beasley the other night. Don’t you think he’s your best option? Instead he only got a small amount of minutes.
- Carl Landry’s game – Just like you guys I want the Landry of old who constantly found ways of scoring inside. Yes his outside shot is ok but it is not great. When we traded for him we saw a banger and inside scoring force. It’s also possible that the coaches want him to take more outside shots to give Cousins space inside which sounds plausible to me. If that’s the case then file this under the Westphal section.

Ive got other issues as well but this is too long already! Urrghh! I want to see improvement and effort! I still believe in 30-35 wins!!! Come on Kings!!

Step in the right direction

Loss hurts but the team (again) played better than the against the Wolves, and I think better than Friday as well. Not satisfied (still dissapointed actually) but at least there’s some improvement.

With the confidence at a low point for these guys, pulling out a win is going to do wonders. I think they just need to break out and get a W to remember what it feels like and get some of that confidence back. Yeah, it’s tough for us but you won’t convince me that these guys don’t also take it personal and are really down on themselves. Pulling out a win against the Knicks on Wednesday could go along way.

Both the Knicks and Kings are on a 5 game skid so,...

I guess we’ll see which one is the hungriest for a win. I really hope its the Kings.
