It seems like many us king's fans are ready to jump off the cliff, feeling like the future is imploding before our eyes. Can this be true 10 games into the season? Lets see.
There is no question that the current kings team has failed to meet most of our expectations. But that is the problem with expectations, they are not always based in reality, and many times they are set so high, they can only fail. Should the kings playing better right now? No question they should. Especially on defense, it's been atrocious.
However, we have to remember that Petrie is still assembling this team. Lets focus on the future a little bit and forget the here and now 6 game losing streak. The future is not as bleak as it may seem to be.
1) Last year at this time, we had neither Landry or Cousins. Both of whom are beasts in the paint. Landry is geting into the prime of his career, and while older than many of the younger players, he is a huge asset to the kings. If the kings can re-sign him after this season, having him and Cousins in the paint is a awesome tag-team. Not to mention that we have a unknown in Hassan Swatage Whiteside.
2) The kings are in a good position to make a big trade. They are in the best position they've been in for years. Especially with a surplus of big men, and alot of cap room. Dalembert is a pretty big expiring contract, which is always valueable at the trade deadline. While I love Thompson, he isn't getting much playing time. If Petrie can trade him for a good shooter/defender, I think thats a trade we seriously consider.
3) Lastly, we all know the NBA is a star driven league. If your team goes anywhere it's because those teams star players carry them there. Going into last season, who could we say we had as a "star" player? I think we would all agree our 2 star players are Tyreke and DeMarcus. Both are still extremely young, and have alot of development to make. But the point is that the how good the kings become will be directly related to how good Tyreke and DeMarcus become. They will carry the kings in the future, and imo that's a good position to be in.
So, I know the current slide has been dissapointing, frustrating and maddening, but when you look at what this team might be like in the next few years, it's still pretty encouraging.
