Antoine Wright Waived By Kings

Photo

The Kings have waived forward Antoine Wright, the team announced Monday. Yahoo!'s Marc Spears was the first to report the decision.

Wright hardly played and never produced for the 4-11 Kings. He was brought in as a defensive-minded wing, just as Desmond Mason and Ime Udoka were in 2009-10. As with Mason and Udoka, Wright failed to make an impact. He did, however, rack up a DUI early in the season.

Unfortunately for the Kings, cutting Wright will save the Kings little to nothing in terms of salary. Wright had signed a guaranteed one-year deal that cost the Kings $854,389. He will be paid that salary in full by Sacramento.

The Kings now have two open roster spots, should they be needed in the event of a trade.

Is there something in the works?

Not sure why you cut a guaranteed contract unless you need the roster spot.

It could mean they want to waive Luther Head or Darnell Jackson who aren't on guaranteed contracts.

Just curious pookey - why would one necessitate the other?

If they wanted to make a trade that took up roster spots and meant the team had to take more money...

…one way they could save a few bucks here & there is by waiving Head and Jackson now. It might be able to save them a million to 1.5 million or so. (Not sure how much honestly.)

The only reason Head & Jackson & Wright were partly on the roster at the amounts they are making is because the Kings are just barely over the minimum salary cap. If they’re taking on a lot more salary, then the financial need of keeping Head & Jackson is no longer necessary.

Make sense?

So it would still be predicated on taking additional salary (trade)?

If so, that makes sense. I thought you were indicating that waiving Head or Jackson couldn’t be accomplished unless they cut Wright loose.

In recent memory they've waived players as needed after trades

Maybe this was a behavior issue?

I meant waived players to make room for trades

Desmond Mason was waived because he sucks you are correct. Mikki Moore, Quincy Douby, & K9(woof) were all waived after trades were already agreed to. So I’m just assuming there is no trade in the works & this won’t save them money. So maybe there is another reason? I guess it really doesn’t matter.

It's to stop Westfall from continually giving Wright any run.

Because it seems like he was going to keep using him regardless of how much he sucked.

I’ll check in with some peeps. I think this as a mutual decision. The Kings weren’t going to use him and it gives Wright a chance to go somewhere else while the season is still young.

Udoka wasn't a waste...

In fact, I wish The Kings still had him… he had a mediocre offensive game but he was critical to some wins, including the Bulls comeback… and he was a glue guy…

Petrie’s probably cutting guys just because Westphal’s an ass… one less guy he can sub in to kill momentum or cohesion during a game. Oh yeah, by the way, fire Westphal.

by mavisdory on Nov 29, 2010 1:01 PM PST reply actions

Agreed

Udoka was a defensive stopper and energy guy, something we could use on this team. He wasn’t great offensively, but he hit his share of big buckets. Like most ex-Kings, he’s in a better place now.

Agreed, I liked Ime

And he did have an impact. He was a major part in that 35 point comeback, and he also was a major part of the Lakers game. He did miss those two free throws, but he also threw the ball off of Pau Gasol’s legs to get us the possession that led to those free throws as well, and we lost the game off a not-called pushoff by Kobe Bryant to free himself up for the wide open three.

Wonder if he just sucked?

Let’s see, he was brought in for defense. Who has the worst Defensive Rating on the Kings (not counting Hassan who has played 2 minutes)? Wright with a Defensive Rating of 113. Who has the worst Offensive Rating on the Kings? Wright again, with an Offensive (Literally) Rating of 40. The next lowest is Darnell Jackson at 97.

wait...

If Wright is claimed off waivers, doesn’t that mean that the team that picks him up also pays his salary? Wouldn’t that allow for the kings to save some money?
