Kings Release Statement on Antoine Wright's DUI Arrest
Kings forward Antoine Wright was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Thursday. Late Friday, the Kings released the following statement from Geoff Petrie:
"We are extremely disappointed in the situation Antoine has created for himself and the organization. There certainly has been no shortage of education and/or resources made available to our players in regard to these types of dangerous behaviors. We will, however, respect his right of due process at this time."
Wright is the second King in recent years to be arrested on DUI charges, following Andres Nocioni's similar arrest almost a year to the day ago. Former Kings coach Eric Musselman was nailed for DUI (with a still unnamed team employee in the passenger seat) in 2005, and Kings co-owner George Maloof was picked up on DUI and other charges in Las Vegas last month.
Wright has played three minutes this season. He has a fully guaranteed $992,000 contract this season.

I can't believe it
Why do the kings players and coaches feel like they need drink and get behind the wheel after games? This is getting absurd!

I met Antoine minutes before his DUI
As a lifelong Kings fan, it is always very exciting to see/meet Kings player in person, especially when they are genuinely nice guys. Thursday night after work and Friday morning I told a lot of my good friends that I met Antoine Wright at my work Thursday night. I was really impressed by how sincere and cordial Antoine was to me.
I’ve read a lot of the comments and people are being very negative towards him. He got the DUI basically right after he left my work. I know a DUI is a very irresponsible and dangerous offense, but I just thought this perspective would be insightful for my fellow Kings fan.
I Came, I Saw, I Conquered.
What if he had killed someone because he had been driving?
I don’t care how nice a guy is, when you do something that puts other peoples life in danger, especially when you have ample opportunity to not do it (have a friend drive, call a cab, call a team car), then he deserves to have people be negative about him.

Do we know what his BAC was yet?
Drinking and driving is always a mistake, but there are levels. If he was right at the legal limit, for instance, I’d say that his action put lives in danger to a lesser extent than Tyreke’s speeding. Obviously he deserves criticism, but to me the previous poster’s anecdote does suggest that his offense might’ve been less severe than others’.

He makes $992,000
He can afford a $20 cab ride.

Agreed 100%
And this continues to be the frustrating part of this story that re-writes itself here and elsewhere over and over again. You would think that one of the first things that these guys would do would be to secure the services of a good car service, and keep that number with them at all times.
Dumber than dumb.

I couldn't agree more
One of the first things I did when I turned 21 was to get the numbers of several reliable cab companies and put them in my phone. I’ve actually never needed them for myself, but I’ve used them for friends plenty of times. It’s the most common sense thing you can do if you know you’ll be drinking. Or you could just not drink…or you could have one or two drinks, wait a few hours, and be fine. DUI’s are never, ever OK.

20$ Cab Ride.
Doubt it was only 20$.

Not really relevant.
But sometimes petty stuff convinces people they should drive. I used to drive a cab; it’s quite common even for those with the means to afford it.

There is no such thing as $20 cab ride in Sacramento
If you get a cab to go 20 blocks (5 minutes) it will cost $20. Considering most of the population lives in Roseville, Elk Grove, Natomas, Folsom/Placer you’d be lucky to get away with a $60 cab ride. Downtown to Rancho Cordova is $40 if you are lucky, maybe $25-$30 to midtown.
Cab rides in Sacramento have always been the biggest rip off. Grant used to rip on it a lot. I certainly agree with my own experiences. I know people have talked about driver services but I called those 3-4 times in my heyday and never got a phone to pick up or response. Either pay a cab at the price of a limo, rent a limo, walk it off for a few hours (my specialty) or take the risk. Anyways, just trying to say Sacramento has always had terrible services when it comes to this sort of thing.

I know, I thought I should have probably written it’s different for a professional basketball player, I fully agree. They can afford the $60-$100 cab ride, shouldn’t even blink.
I was more complaining about how Sacramento makes it hard for anyone with an average income to use the cab option. It’s a huge expense because of the supply/demand. Can get anywhere in Vegas for $20. San Diego is alright. LA has excellent rates, once went 40 miles in rush hour traffic for $120. In Sacramento that cab would have been a mortgage payment.

There's such a thing as a 20$ ride...
…but it’s hard to get anywhere you really want to go only on that 20$ that’s for sure.

Is there sober ride in Sacramento?
In DC if u get drunk, u can use sober ride as a free service to take u home. U probably don’t even need to spend $20.
Children, before you go to sleep check under your bed for the BOOGIE MAN!!
Sac State runs a program. It’s only for students and limited to about a 10 mile radius around the campus. Problem was you had to be friends with a person who volunteered to drive for the evening or there was decent odds no one would show up to pick you up … unless you were a chick. Always a necessity to have a chick in your group to execute that phone call.

I don't care if it is guaranteed
Release him. Show the younger players that this sort of recklessness will not be tolerated in our organization. Noce got away with it, so did Musselman, and maybe our tolerance is a part of why it keeps happening.
Release him, and sign Marcus Landry.
Respectfully disagree with this -
First, I don’t think that Antoine Wright chose to drink and drive because Noc and Musselman “got away with it.” I do not believe that this was a factor in anything that he did last night. And in regards to Noc and Muss, neither one of them “got away” with anything from a legal standpoint, but they did retain their jobs.
Second, would we be willing to release Evans? Or Cousins? Because this is a transgression that should be treated the same by the franchise regardless of contract, regardless of potential. So if you would release any and every Kings player and employee for DUI, then I respect your take, though I do not agree with it.

Spot on, section
I actually had the same reaction as venomy at first but then I remembered about Tyrekegate over the summer and how my feelings would change if this was a different player.
Well said

So the next time you get a DUI venomy....
…does that mean I get to renounce you as a Kings fan?

Don't care.
I don’t like anyone who gets a DUI, but rather going on about it, Wright’s going to get what he’s earned out of the deal.
Thus, no justification for Wright, and the law will take care of ’Toine.

Here's another article with more info

Couple key quotes to me:
Rocklin police acting Sgt. Rich Cabana said that about 1:30 a.m., his department received a transfer call from the California Highway Patrol that a resident was following a possible drunken driver on westbound Interstate 80 near Rocklin Road.
and
Team spokesman Troy Hanson said players can call team security at any hour if they need a ride. Players are also provided the phone number to an outside service for rides.

So they have access to a ride no matter what time
Yet players continue to make stupid choices. You’d think people they were with might say something….sigh. Of course, we have no idea how often players drink and ARE responsible…you never hear about those incidents, so hopefully most players do use this service.
