by MichaelMack on Nov 6, 2010 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions

My guess

is that Evans and Dalembert are the only guys that would rank in the top 15 at their position. We have below average talent overall.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Nov 6, 2010 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you think

That Beno is a below average offensive player? Landry? Garcia? Cousins? Casspi?

I do have to agree here

I don’t like our offensive sets…

by chenp22 on Nov 6, 2010 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I think

that the guys that you mentioned are nice NBA players that do not start for a lot of NBA teams.

Let me ask you this – how many of tonight’s 16 turnovers (and counting) are the fault of the coaching staff? Because if this team handles the ball better tonight, they are probably winning this game. It’s that simple. So, is it the coaching staff’s fault that the Kings can’t hold onto the ball?

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

So you feel we have an excellent system?

Our plays that we run really impress you section? That surprises me, greatly.

by MichaelMack on Nov 6, 2010 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I never said that we have an excellent system

And I defy you to go back and find where I said anything like that. What I said was that the system is not the problem – it’s the level of talent. Run whatever system you want with these guys and the result will be similar.

It is a young team, prone to errors, that still needs a lot more talent.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Nov 6, 2010 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

So

our system is not the problem. Our demonstrated inability to get a good shot off at the end of quarters is just because of our talent, and not play calling by the bench?

by MichaelMack on Nov 6, 2010 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Read what I wrote below regarding Reke’s role in the offense. It basically sums up our (sometimes improvised/ISO based) system

I am genuinely surprised

by your premise that Coaching plays such a small factor in the play of the team

by MichaelMack on Nov 6, 2010 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

It plays a small factor in a team of limited talent

At any given time you have a few coaches that will steal a few wins along the way, and a few coaches that will flush a few wins along the way. The majority of the coaches are interchangeable.

Phil Jackson could win more games with this team. Probably Popovich, too. After that, I don’t know that much more can be done with this team, as young and inexperienced as it currently is.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Nov 6, 2010 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess that is where we are in disagreement

I understand people wanting to like and trust PW, but there must have been some reason he went a decade between head coaching jobs. While I think he has been plenty adequate, I do not think we run very sophisticated or consistent offensive sets, and I do feel that coaching can make a difference, and not just Jackson, Sloan, or Popovich.

by MichaelMack on Nov 6, 2010 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont fully trust PW or like his coaching at times

but you NEED players and experience

you want the ultimate example of this?

He’s coaching on the Celtics right now.

by Apoet on Nov 6, 2010 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Another thing you can look at

is what kind of difference has there been with a year of PW? Has our offense really evolved? We still look like rookies and young players (which we are), but there should be some sort of comfort within the system from the players.. they still look uncomfortable and lost, which they shouldn’t with a coach of a year and a nickel

that Dalembert is new to the team, Cousins is new to the team, Landry has less than a half season with this team…and most of your young players are still learning about themselves.

by JuMowbray on Nov 6, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

It's the talent on the team

It’s not hard for new players to play at a high level when they are already going into a good situation with experienced teammates.

Again, how good were the Celtics before the big three?

That makes zero sense! When your players suck you better have a good system, play team not individually. Problem is idk if there is a system!

Think a little of bit of the Suns. Their players are not all that great except Nash but they have a system and they play well. Kings have Reke a great player by the stats he put as a rookie but have nothing on offense or defense . Whatever they have it is not working!

by LagunaKing on Nov 6, 2010 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Why does the triangle work so well in LA but not so well in Minnesota? I mean, it’s the same system, right?

People overrate the effect that a star player can also have on the chemistry of the team

To me, he is passing at a higher level this year and (again) we are JUST starting the season.

and side note, most star players in the NBA tend to dominate the ball.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. I’ll agree with you there. I mean, as much as I would love for this team to play unselfish basketball like the Celtics and other championship-caliber teams, they can’t do that. The players aren’t at the level they should be to play at that level. So when ‘Reke dominates, he is helping us rather than hurting. We wouldn’t be in the position we would without him. He keeps us in close games.

In slightly better news, Dumb and Dumber is on TBS. I was very disappointed to find out it only got 2 stars. It’s definitely a ridiculously stupid movie, but in a brilliant way.

I always wondered if Jim Carrey was legally bound to do that movie. It’s like the humor of Ace Ventura ceased to exist in AV2.

I also love the first lines of Jim Carrey’s…. the whole Austria-Australia thing. Classic.

Oh, and when he first meets the woman he’s driving to the airport… “So, why ya goin to the airport? Flyin somewhere?” “How’d you guess?” “Well, I saw your luggage. Then I noticed the airline ticket and put two and two together. So where ya headed?” “Aspen” “Ohh, California. Beautiful”.

Oh! And of course the scene where he runs down the jetway and the airport guy tries to stop him and he yells “It’s OK! I’m a limo driver!” and keeps going. Then the line, shortly after, where he says work was OK except he fell off the jetway again.

I may know this movie too well…

I dfidn't hate Dumb & Dumber. I just didn't enjoy the jokes in the same way.

I think a big part of Ace Ventura is that Jim Carrey rewrote some of it and those are amazingly funny jokes. Plus, the subtle form of humor and everything else was just something I enjoyed more.

The Farrelly Brothers did an excellent job with Dumb & Dumber though. They executed their vision of what they wanted.

Are we talking Simpsons vs. Family Guy?

Because I agree, they’re different styles. But The Simpsons was really the first animated show for adults in primetime, wasn’t it? At least in the modern era. It opened the door for other cartoons that weren’t aimed at preschoolers.

Jackie Robinson was the first black player in the 20th century.

Hank Aaron came along a few years later and was a great player. Willie Mays and a host of fellows.

The Simpsons is no doubt great, but I don’t really think being the first makes it more “great” than Family Guy. If it’s funnier, being first has nothing to do with it.

True

IMO, The Simpsons is infinitely more clever and just of a much higher quality. Family Guy was good for a while, but then got to the point of having a pointless/random cutaway every other minute and it just killed it.

Then again, The Simpsons is certainly not nearly as good today as it once was, but to me, the glory years of The Simpsons (probably seasons 3-8 or so) are the best years of any TV show, ever.

It was good but not Oscar worthy

I have many issues with the movie and to me, it was just the Oscar’s way to be more relevant with the indie crowd.

Truth

It just it bugged me how much of an obvious ploy this was by the Oscars to get younger viewers

I mean look at it this way, Juno and Knocked Up both dealt with the same themes. Only one was geared towards a teen audience the other wasn’t.

Juno was rated PG 13

Knocked up rated R comedy which is essentially a good way to not get noticed by the Oscars.

Boith very well received critically. Only Juno got nominated because it was the indie sweetheart.

Not saying the quality of both films is equal, it’s just I can’t approve of such bias towards films because of what is involved.

Little Miss Sunshine for instance is an indie movie that was worthy of an Oscar nod imo

Little Miss Sunshine was better than both Juno and Knocked Up.

Judd Apatow is funny in his writings, naturally, and his movies illustrate that. I just don’t know how many classics he’s had outside of the 40 yr old virgin. (Whcih is a classic.)

Little Miss Sunshine was absolutely awesome. I also thought Sunshine Cleaners was a great indie flick too.

I thought the acting was good, but certainly not incredible

I’m fine with Ellen Page being nominated (I’m pretty sure she was…) but she didn’t deserve to win, IMO. Of course, I don’t always agree with the Oscars…like this year. What the fuck was with Sandra Bullock winning? I like her a lot, actually, but The Blind Side sucked and her performance was extremely average and didn’t require much at all. Meryl Streep was way better but IMO the best, by far, was Gabourey Sidibe. She was astounding.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty meh

Part of that might be because I learned that the movie was way different from the book it was based on, which was supposedly much more true-to-life. Apparently in reality the young man in the movie was kind of informally adopted by half a dozen families and not exclusively the rich white folks. I dunno, the white savior thing made me kind of uncomfortable. And I just didn’t think it was that good.

Did you see Precious, by any chance? Just curious.

I haven't read the book either

I read a column that talked about differences. What stood out to me was that one of hte other families that was really supportive of him was a black family. I dunno, that just seemed like a big thing to conveniently leave out. I’d give the movie a C+ overall probably, but I thought Sandra Bullock’s role required very, very little, and her Oscar was a complete and utter joke.

by Christina_J on Nov 6, 2010 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. I saw that in the movie. It's just at the beginning and Sandra Bullock's prissy Southern Girl act takes up most of the time.

I’m just saying that expecting a movie to portray anything accurately is probably aiming a little high.

I watched the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and in some respects it might as well be a separate screenplay because of how much was taken out of the storyline.

Yeah, it wasn't so much the changes

As it was the possibility that the reasons the changes were made were due to race at all. I dunno. It just…didn’t blow me away. At all. Maybe the hype hurt my opinion of it, but I went into it not expecting much. Definitely not my favorite. And I haven’t read any of those books so I probably won’t see the movies…unless I do read them. But book-to-movie adaptations almost always disappoint. The Wizard of Oz is the only one that I can honestly say I prefer the movie version. I love the LOTR movies but haven’t read the books so I can’t make that comparison.

One of my high school dances was themed “Famous Couples” and two guys (who I think were just friends, but they might’ve been a couple, I dunno and it doesn’t matter) wanted to dress up in those suits. Sadly, they couldn’t find them. But those would be AMAZING Halloween costumes.

For some stupid reason I liked the Mask more than Dumb & Dumber.

Maybe I need to watch all of them again.

Not a shock but...

I think the team will struggle to defend. Beno is not a strong defender and Garcia/Evans/Casspi are all decent defenders but none of them are fantastic on-the-ball defenders. Either Donte finds his way off the bench and defends 2s and 3s or they’re in trouble. So they’re going to have trouble guarding 1s, 2s, and 3s. I actually miss Udoka.

Well I just got Back to the Future Trilogy today on Blue Ray

Might as well end the day on a plus by watching them :)

She was older.

I don’t know if she ceased to have hotness. When I think of her as a hottie, Howard the Duck tends to come to mind.

I was a lot older the first time I saw Howard the Duck.

I always thought it was funny that a duck could pimp out a hottie like Lea Thompson.

Is the World over now that we're discussing Howard the Duck rather than the Kings lackluster play tonight in Memphis (which I didn't get to see).

I was watching The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (book’s a lot better).

I don’t think he’s driven it in about 15 years. Just sits in the garage.
