Tyreke Evans Hasn't Told the Kings He Is Staying Home

Kings guard Tyreke Evans hasn't informed Kings management or coaches he'll stay home to nurse his foot injury as the team embarks on a three-game road trip, reports Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee.

Evans' brother Doc tweeted last night (as you've seen on the front page of StR) that he had spoken to Tyreke, and that the second-year guard would be remaining in Sacramento. But Kings president Geoff Petrie told Jones that the team hadn't heard from Evans, and did not know whether he'd continue to try to play through the injury or request rest.

The Kings last played Saturday. If Evans misses the road trip, he would have a full week of rest for his foot before the Rockets visit Sunday. The road trip includes stops in Houston, New Orleans and Oklahoma City. The Kings are 2-6 on the road this season, and 1-5 against the West on the road. Sacramento is just 1-10 against the Western Conference in total, the win in the season opener against the Wolves.

this one could be on Tyreke’ s brother, not on the Kings.

It's on a few people in my eyes

Why is Petrie telling Jones he hasn’t heard anything? Geoff doesn’t have a phone? And why hasn’t anyone told Petrie about Tyreke taking games off?

Before commenting to the Kings beat writer about it?

Probably a good idea. Especially when the Tweet comes from someone so close to Tyreke.

What worries me more is that word didn’t make it to Petrie. Reke should tell Westphal. Westphal should tell Petrie. All of this should happen before it makes it to Twitter

i do not know

any more details than anyone else here. But imagine this situation. GP gets a call from Jones.

I understand Evans is missing the trip.

I didn’t know that. Where are you getting this?

His brother tweeted it.

Now what does he say. Um, yeah, knew all about it. No comment?

Either of those look just as bad. All you really can say is, he hasn’t told us that. Or do you really think GP follows the tweets of Evans bro?

It could be, since this decision was made at night

That Tyreke figured “I’ll let everyone know at practice tomorrow”, and that if twitter hadn’t been invented, we wouldn’t be making a big deal of this.

The organization knows.

It’s not like the Kings are unaware of how twitter works. It’s just that the basketball staff doesn’t spend much time on twitter. That’s really the difference here if anything.

Casspi on guarding SGs

Casspi did an adequate job defending Wade when the defensive rotation went that way, so I don’t see any reason he can’t stay in front of K-mart or Harden.

We have already tried the starting 5 for defensive purposes and we saw what that produced. Cisco isn’t all that much of an upgrade in that regard over Casspi either. And Casspi is playing at a much higher level on offense than Cisco at the moment, and makes less mistakes over all.

Kwill: Walton said Casspi has a lifesize poster of himself he brought into the locker room.

I thought Wade destroyed Casspi when he was guarding him (not as bad as Cisco though).

I remember Casspi forcing Wade towards where help was supposed to be.

Wade was beating the help or shooting his fade away jumpers, which isn’t guardable anyway.

In my defense I watched the game while writing a paper so the plays I watched may have happened to be the ones with good defensive rotations.

I think Wade destorys everybody

Omri did try to force him to help, though. Wade is impossible to guard 1 on 1 – and the way the NBA favors the offensive player ensures this is the case even when the defender makes a great effort.

by Kusian on Dec 13, 2010 10:29 AM PST up reply actions

i agree...

wade just destroys people in general. who can beat wade 1 on 1? that’s right, no one – just like all the greats. there has to be help sliding over a lot, especially on pick and rolls, or screens. i believe casspi should get the starting job at the 2, if tyreke does sit out, and get some at the 3 if necessary. with that, garcia could come in and play more minutes at both the 2-3 as well.

by blowfishee on Dec 13, 2010 12:03 PM PST up reply actions

On the other hand

do you want Casspi to help bring up the ball when the opponent is pressuring Beno?

I think Casspi showed these last few games that he has found his niche coming off the bench, and it is a role that suits him.

I am still on the fence between starting Cisco in an attempt to get him back on track, or starting Jeter to find out whether he can play a larger role on this level and can stick around in years to come.

Dunking Dutchman

by RikSmits on Dec 13, 2010 6:51 AM PST up reply actions

I would give jeter the go based on that argument.

we aren’t playing for championships this year. Its about developing the future. Cisco is not the future.

Take a look at Tyreke's Game Logs from this year and last year

Last year, he only had 5 games with less than 10 points a game, and only 19 games where he shot less than 40%.

This year, he’s already matched that, and he already has 13 games where he’s shot less than 40%. But at the beginning of the year, for the first 6-10 games, he was at or around his level of play last year. Then he hit a huge wall and has been pretty terrible ever since. That’s the plantar fasciitis becoming a detriment to him on the court.

Shuttin' down doesn't mean he isn't going

Tyreke can decide he needs to heal up, but I doubt he gets to say that he isn’t going on the road with the team. This might be a moment in which the team, GP and PW, establishes some boundaries…

Well to be fair

Getting Tyreke healthy is for the well-being of the team too, since we’re not going to do anything of note without him in tip-top shape. But I completely agree that this should probably have been left off twitter and left to the organization to announce today, as Evans was probably planning on letting the team know then.

Exactly.

Tyreke’s brothers, if they were smart, would let this kind of thing come from the team. It sends a bad message to the public, the organization, and his teammates that Tyreke’s first loyalty is to his posse and not his team. It’s shades of Team Dime all over again. Only without the drugs and weapons.

Team Dime was Bibby’s friends/followers/nail clipper holders, while the Blueprint guys are made up of Tyreke’s elder brothers who actually have some control over him, for better or for worse.

Even though Jeter has shortcomings on defense, he makes the team better with his style of play on offense. I would also like to see him with Dalembert, because he plays good D which creates fast break opportunities. It seems like Jeter makes everyone look like a stud on offense.

I find it interesting...

..that the tweet from Doc Evans may no longer be there. I keep looking for it, but it’s not showing up at the moment. In fact, now all you can see is the retweet’s that were sent after Doc’s original tweet.

I’m thinking that it’s possible Reke plays and that Doc just simply jumped the gun.

I understand

but in this ‘twitter era,’ these interactions are changing. I agree it would’ve been better to communicate the news differently but I also can’t help but think that this probably used to happen all the time (players deciding to shut it down, agents making decisions behind the scenes, family members getting involved) and there just wasn’t a ‘twitter’ complicating things.

I voted for Cisco.

Not necessarily because I think Cisco would rock the starting SG spot, but because I think Casspi and Pooh look really comfortable with their bench roles, and I don’t want to mess that up. We still need offense from the bench.

Quotes from Petrie from Jason Jones (now this worries me a bit)
Petrie re: Evans. Reke will stay on rehab plan on trip and its up to Reke to decide if he won’t play.

Petrie called severity of Reke’s plantar fasciitis “minor” at this point.

Petrie also said at this point Reke is closer to not having plantar fasciitis than having it. I’ll go into detail from Texas.

That makes it sound like Reke is just playing like crap, and the injury isn’t that serious. We’ll see what happens. All I know is what I see with my eyes, and that is that Tyreke has not been Tyriffic for a month or so now.

PW has twice said that Reke's problem isn't that teams know how to defend him now.

So, taking the 2 comments, one could conclude the the real problem is Tyreke. I’m I to believe that he’s the real head case on the team?
