Head played in the 1st, 2nd & 4th

He came in for Beno in the 1st we were up by 6 and we were up by 6 when he left.
In the 2nd he came in for Jeter and we were up by 8 and when he left we were up by 12.
In the 3rd he didn’t play, but he started the 4th and we were up 8. He missed both his FGA’s and when he left at the 8 minute mark for Casspi we were up by 4. So, I have him with a +/- of 0, but the box score has him at +1. Certainly, his stat line looks poor but that doesn’t show his defensive contributions.

I can live with this one.

Sure, while I was watching I wanted to gouge my eyes out at some of the stupid crap happening on the floor but this one is a video room select game.

DMC can learn a lot just from watching footage of this one.

It's remarkable

How the Kings blew their 23 point lead. The execution down the stretch was beyond awful. CP3 breaks the Kings down for a wide open layup and the Kings just keep fouling stupidly especially Jason Thompson, luckily West missed both.

The Kings big lead at the half was shocking, but it seems like they regressed to the mean and ended up in a with quality loss.

What does anyone expect with a bunch of young guys who in games past have shown no real semblance of an offense for a full 48 minutes?

we are trying to “model”. It’s about improving from last season. For me the frustration isn’t with the losing. It’s with how we are losing and the lack of progress or any semblance of structure. We don’t know who is gonna start. We don’t know who is the 6th man. We don’t know who’s gonna be in there in crunch time. What is the plan? What is the philosophy?? Answer me Geoff!!!!!!

Look up some of those Thunder losses.

Most of them were blowouts, and the key reasons for losing: Lack of cohesion and an apparent lack of effort. Sound familiar?

by glazier_25 on Dec 15, 2010 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

And a lack of cohesion and apparent lack of system.

A big part of the Thunders issue’s under Carleismo was that Durant was playing out of position. Brooks probably did more X&O’s and stuff like that, but he was destined to lose games that season because his guys were so far behind the curve.

Under Brooks progress Westbrook really started to blossom.

by M. Thai on Dec 17, 2010 3:53 AM PST up reply actions

I think Carleismo was fired because of Durant and the lack of progress players were showing.

But Brooks lost a lot of games that season too. The Thunder were something like 1-18 when Carleismo was fired. After a 20-62 season. It was time Carleismo had to go. There were a lot of things that didn’t make sense in that way.

With PW? It’s not the same issue IMO.

Believe I know

Its just the price you pay for youth. Take solace in the fact that next year we will be winning games like this with a more experienced DMC and Tyreke.

by Scirocco on Dec 15, 2010 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

I just hope I never see Omri throw up a layup that goes straight up again....

….OR see DMC travel THREE times in the 4th qtr alone. It was how it ended with the Kings looking like High School kids against a probably low seed playoff team in the West. That was frustrating.

But, the flip side to this is that young teams go through this. I think a veteran is needed to shake things up. Sacrifice some of the youth.

I started watching the game with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter...

And all I saw was the team losing a 5 point lead and doing some sad stuff, like letting an opposing guard get two offensive rebounds, Kings players standing around as Chirs Paul drives uncontested, Demarcus and Tyreke getting stuffed at the rim, Tyreke having a wide open three but holding the ball till the defender was in his face before shooting, and watching Demarcus try to dribble drive from the perimeter.

Seeing that that’s all I got to see of the game, I may have prematurely gotten riled up, but damn, that’s a pretty bad way to end the game

by M. Thai on Dec 15, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

I just posted this in the game thread, turns out everyone left lol

The Kings have showed great stuff, but nowhere near consistently. The first half today was better than any ball I remember being played last season- what we got then was endearingly poor play from a squad with no expectations. What we’ve had so far this season is occasional great play that distressingly highlights the awful, which unfortunately is far more common. To say that they’ve "only gotten worse by leaps and bounds" isn’t accurate, it’s that the glimpses of their capability make the unacceptable stuff even more so.

Saw the game, just saw youth get out executed

Nothing really new here, the NBA is a veteran’s league, and we’re fielding a team of 22/23 year olds.

Think about this. Our lineup at the end of the game:

Beno (28)
Tyreke (21)
Casspi (22)
JT (23)
Cousins (20)

Thats a lineup I could see us fielding in the playoffs in three years.

Nice perspective

I made this point in another thread. The one thing you can’t complaint about concerning PW is that he’s not playing the young guys especially in crunch time. Just like he did in the final play of the Mav’s game, when he ran the play using DeMarcus and Tyreke.

Their inexperience might be hurting us now, by all the PT their getting is going to play dividends later.

He’s probably been making these same moves his whole career and it never got called in HS or college. I’m not optimistic that he can fix it very easily, but hopefully I’m wrong. I do think that Cuz is a much more cerebral player than he currently gets credit for, so maybe he’ll be able to figure it out sooner rather than later.

I love that Cuz is cerebral.

It’s one of the things that makes me like him. Because much of his game I’m not nearly as fond of. But because he has that mind, I believe he can truly get better. He’s worth the effort to help and improve as a player. Once he does, the Kings will be monsters.

I think he'll get over it pretty quickly.

He’s a kid that takes losses personally, and after being a big part of our loss with one of those travels, I think tonight will be a sort of wake-up call for him. It will be a few games, maybe even the next half of the season, but he’ll put a stop to it.

Cousins is a fast learner

He’ll get it right. His defense is coming along, he’s in foul trouble much less often than the early year, and he’s starting to be more patient in the post.

We’re going to have to live with brain fart games for now.

Cuz's defense has me encouraged he can be a quality defender in this league.

Particularly the way he played Blake Griffin in the non-blowout loss to the Clippers.

Now that I don't agree with quite as much.

I think his defensive ceiling is a big man version of Derek Fisher. Still good and can take a charge at a big moment, but he’ll never be that great. And even Fisher is a bit of a stretch, as I think Fisher is a pretty good defensive player. It will be a few years if/when Cousins gets to that level.

by glazier_25 on Dec 15, 2010 8:01 PM PST up reply actions

You're basing this off his rookie year?

I think a good model for Cousins defensively is Andrew Bogut. Where was Bogut defensively in his rookie year?

Bogut has more hops than Cousins for sure

But there is more to defense than just jumping around and blocking shots. Bogut is a smart as hell defender who uses his length and quick feet to bother anyone in the lane. He takes a lot of charges too.

If Cousins really tries he can be that kind of defender I think.

to lose that game!!!! 34 points in the second half!!! 14 points in the 4th quarter!!!!

PW had look of defeat in his eyes with 9 minutes left in the game. This guy is not a winner. He has the look of a defeated man with no answers and no passion. He’s like an crippled thoroughbred who needs to be taken out to pasture and shot.

The Hornets were ripe to be run off the floor in the 3rd quarter but Donte Greene and Jason Thompson were the X-Mas spirit of giving, so played like two sorry ass D-Leaguers and let the Hornets waltz back into the game. I thought Landry, who I would have started 3rd quarter, and Omri belonged on the court much sooner but by the time they entered the momentum was all NOH.

And I want to know how incompetent and inept our coaching staff can be not to make a mix tape of DeMarcus Cousins infinite traveling violations, and say “Look buddy, my man, two steps before the ball its the floor is not allowed!!!”

There’s no excuse to lose this game. I think we should make Bobby Jackson new interim head coach. Or even Jerry Reynolds! With new lead assistant Coach Carrill. Fire PW, Ellie, Esien and Truck Robinson. 4 pink slips for the holidays.

This season is a fucking joke and its time for heads need to roll.

His three game defensive stretch.

There was a three game stretch where his defense looked absolutely phenomenal. Typically we’d all have just suggested that the opposite player was having an off night, but it happened in three games in a row and that, I think, threw everyone for a loop.

It’s hard to admit it, but I’ll admit that Head had me going there with that fluke defensive prowess.

Momentum Shift

I let out an “ahh shit!!” in front of my 3 year old the moment PW caved in and adjusted the lineup in reaction to NO’s 3 guard set. He replaced Greene with Head I knew it was all down hill from there. Greene had just committed an offensive foul trying to post up a smaller guard, which I don’t have a problem with. Why not got back to that advantage and make it work. I am sick of PW’s knee jerk reactions to other lineups when our own has its advantages. I would have liked to see Greene vs Thornton matchup a little more….both defensively and offensively. I’m not a big fan of Greene but look at his +-. Just stick with a lineup PW. Shifting to that 3 guard lineup with Tyreke, Beno and Head was a major mistake in my opinion. Scotch on the rocks please….

To be fair, things went pear-shaped way before Head came in.

Luther was all kinds of fail while he was in, to my eyes, but I don’t think it’s fair to point to that one moment and say that’s when PW lost the game for us. “2nd Half ’Reke” and DeMarcus “Two-step Boogie” Cousins probably had more to do with the loss than anyone else. But I still love those guys.

DMCs turnovers cost us the chance to come back

But you can’t blame him for the collapse. He actually played a pretty decent game. I don’t think the Head substitution was the turning point either, I think the real problem is inexperience. The Kings lack poise, and they didn’t have the killer mentality to just go out there and finish the opponent off. They let up, and let the Hornets zone defense completely stop the ball movement. When Grant said toward the end of the 3rd “if the Kings can end the quarter up double-digits I think they’ll have weathered the storm” I was thinking “NO NO NO! Goddamn I hope the team doesn’t think that!”

I’ll say it again: Chris Paul made as many free throws as our whole team attempted (and we only hit 57%.) That is a huge problem.

When you have a team down

You have to keep the foot on the accelerator. Play to win with confidence. Don’t play to protect a lead. Play to extend the lead. Play the same way in the second half that you play in the first half – balls out.

I don't agree with you on some things (lot of things actually)

But I definitely agree with this. This has been a trademark of the Kings since Westphal has taken over too: Trying too hard to protect a lead once they have it. I remember last year especially the game against Utah (1st after Kevin’s injury) that we won, we got a huge lead, then basically tried to dribble out the 24 second clock for rest of game and Utah almost came back because of it.

I think Westphal tries to have it both ways

Because the team always plays against the clock instead of the opponent at the end of a close game, and we usually get crappy shots because of it. Then, after the game, he bemoans the fact that we didn’t play down the stretch like we did in building the lead.

by g4y Vulture on Dec 15, 2010 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

I was a Westphal fan when he was hired - but not so much anymore.

When Westy was hired, I thought, “A calm, cool, collected and experienced coach for the young crew he had to mold into a team.” Now, when I see Westy 1 1/4 seasons later, I have to blame him for some of our loses. He does overreact, but that’s cause his players aren’t reliable. The players can’t get into a groove cause Westy is too quick to change the rotation. And the cycle never ends. I understand Cuz’s traveling problem, but I think he can be taught to not travel. I think JT has gotten better at not fouling out, but he could get better. Pooh is a great spark and needs to play more, but Reke and Beno do work well together.

So what’s the thread running through all of this? Coaching. Westphal is not a great coach. He’s ok, but that’s not good enough. Westphal has settled down with the varying rotations, but he does sub in players who do not fit the situation, i.e., Luther F-ING Head instead of Garcia??? Leaving Pooh in when he was getting owned by Paul is wrong. That’s where Garcia could have helped (hopefully). Not putting Pooh in earlier in Quarters and resting Reke is wrong. Pooh kicks the pace in the ass and causes all kinds of trouble for other teams. He’s a mismatch in the opposite way Reke is – He’s small and fast, (and experienced if playing overseas counts), whereas Reke is a linebacker in a NBA uniform.

So why keep Westy? Because he can grow with the team. Because the rookies will get better and make his job easier. Because he is philosophical enough to not let the loses mean too much for a team with an average age of 21.

So, we keep Westy, we teach Cuz to not travel, we put Pooh in more and Casspi with him cause he likes to run, and we all take a breath and realize it’s going to be an ugly year BECAUSE THE TEAM HAS TALENT, BUT DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT!! If they were all talentless, we could just live with the loses.

Toyota 4Runner with Kings record on the back . . . Anybody else want to give me crap about it????

Exactly my thoughts

Where would we be with Kurt Rambis or any of the other people we were interested in before hiring Westphal? A whole lot worse off I think. I hate to beat a dead horse, but every time I see the Maloofs on TV it makes we want to kick them in the crotch for forcing Adelman out.

The main thing I hate about PW is his infatuation with players who really shouldn’t be playing as much as they have been (read: Luther Head) Can anyone explain Cisco’s DNP-CD last night? Head had no points 1 board and 1 assist in 9 minutes. and Cisco didn’t play at all. wtf?

Only way the DNP can really be explained

is PW gave Beno and Tyreke a ton of minutes and essentially only had 20 minutes left for the other three guards. Head and Garcia both played alright against the Rockets and there really were only 20 minutes available between Head, Garcia, and Pooh so it seems he went with Head thinking it was a better match up I suppose (Maybe I am biased but it seems like Garcia gets killed at the SF position so I can understand avoiding playing him there). Personally I would have preferred to keep Pooh in or do something else but what do I know.

I predict JT will never breathe through his nose.

I don't think a case can be made for Head over Garcia

I don’t care if Garcia played 48 minutes the night before, if you’re only going to play one of them and only for 9 minutes, put Cisco in.

uh Garcia got torched by Budinger the night before?

Darn it, playing devil’s advocate with Luther Head is frickin hard!

I predict JT will never breathe through his nose.

:(

I watch the first half while getting ready for work, Kings up going to the half time, time to go to work, I’m all happy and excited and can’t wait to get home and see just how much the Kings won by….

Get out of work, get on STR and loudly just say “OMFG”

Thus is the life of a Kings fan.

I need a drink.

Michae Bluth - "Clear as the Ann on plain's face."

Leela -" Man, I'm sore all over. I feel like I just went ten rounds with mighty Thor"
Fry - "I feel like I was mauled by Jesus. "

Homer - " When I held that gun in my hand, I felt a surge of power…like God must feel when he’s holding a gun."

Tobias - "Where the f*** are my hard-boiled eggs?!?"

Who the hell is Jermaine Taylor??? I’m really staring to question if this organization commitment to winning or just being a sparring partner te every #$!#% NBA team even the bad ones.
