I'm ok with this loss

DeMarcus showed off a lot of his potential tonight, Tyreke had another solid first half, but a bad 2nd half again. He still puts up 20-5-5 up with ease even when he’s not playing well it seems.

Maybe 'Reke should be on a treadmill throughout the entire halftime break to keep from stiffening up.

The 3 spot didn't produce much

but Durant had only an OK game for him. 24 points, only 7 made shots (shot 15) but most points at the FT line. Collison hurt us more I thought

A few years back, I worked at Vlade's nightclub in Old Sac

One night, the Sonics played the Warriors in Oakland, Mateen Cleaves was on the Sonics at the time, and for whatever reason he brought several of the Sonics players and some of the Warriors players to Vlade’s place that night after the game. During the game, Jason Richardson (on the Warriors at the time) obliterated Nick Collison with a dunk all over his face. It was probably the top sports highlight of the night and they kept showing it over and over and over again on ESPN every few minutes or so, and I was standing right next to J-Rich while we all watched the highlight replay throughout the night, while Collison sat at the bar a few feet away, drinking and trying not to watch it himself. It was really weird. I always think of that night whenever I see Nick Collison, and I smile.

Looking at the box score, it was kind of a strange game.

We didn’t really seem to get dominated in any one particular aspect of the game, just fairly solidly beat at everything. I guess they’re just a better team.

That's what I thought happen

Pretty much we got beaten by the better team. If we wanted the W, we needed to play a perfect game and it didn’t happen. Much better all around game though in terms of playing all 4th quarters

If Portland had selected Durant instead of Oden

would OKC be what it is today?

Sometimes, you just need a boatload of luck. And that’s what we need in getting that one guy who’ll make this team better.

regardless of whether they selected Oden instead of Durant

I do like how they have run their franchise. Well, except for the whole “screwing over an idea city” part.

I predict JT will never breathe through his nose.

DMC had a good game tonight.

looking forward to more solid double doubles like that, 19 and 16 plus 3 dimes a block and a steal. He almost got his shooting percentage up to 50 tonight.

Hey, we didn’t have any quarters where we only scored in the teens tonight… baby steps… or something.

by rpmonkey on Dec 17, 2010 7:42 PM PST reply actions

If I remember correctly, all of Cuz's assists were in the first half, and I think most of his TOs were in the second half.

So if he’d have kept his ballhandling/playmaking going the whole game, he would’ve really had a special line tonight.

Nah

He seems to be playing more in control, overall, with each passing game. He’s still making a lot of mistakes, but probably less than you would normally expect from a rookie his age with his high of a usage.

I think he's improved noticeably

Still not where he wants or has to be, but very good for a rookie

Unfortunately the points and rebounds are somewhat offset by the TOs and fouls

I would agree his progress is good for a rookie. Conditioning is an issue that can be fixed.

by kman949 on Dec 17, 2010 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

as i said in the game thread though...

he needs to get slapped upside his head for not getting the ball to one of his guards on that break where he fouled out.

Saw that charge coming as soon as he crossed halfcourt with the ball.

Honestly though, it's kind of amazing that this game wasn't more of a blowout, considering how many of our guys had really bad games.

Cuz, ’Reke, Beno, and sort of JT all did enough to keep things reasonable.

The dead zone

We just can’t seem to play an entire game without slipping in to this zone for periods of time. And by dead zone I mean stretches where we just play dumb/poor basketball, usually by turnovers and poor shot selection. It’s really maddening because we can play good ball outside the zone. sigh

I know a lot of people don't want to hear this

but isn’t the “dead zone” you speak of almost inevitable with a team this young and with so little experience together?

Agree

If we didn’t make dumb, young mistakes then we would win more games, so our record would be better. There’s no such thing as playing well every game and still being ‘bad.’ It doesn’t make sense

Good for him

It’s nice to see him finally do something positive this season. 33% field goal percentage (3-12 tonight), one of the lowest PER’s in the league. Seems like a nice guy – maybe this will finally be the start of something nice for him.

Demarcus had a nice game I thought

I thought we actually made a great effort to play well, but the silly turnovers and lack of production offensively from our 3 and 4 position hurt us bad I thought.

Really didn’t get beat by their 3 best players though, theIr secondary guys did out perfrom our bench guys.

I understand that DMC had a nice game

but why is Dalembert playing so few minutes? I know his offense is a problem, but with the right set of players around him, shouldn’t he be out there a bit more?

by RikSmits on Dec 17, 2010 11:32 PM PST reply actions

DMC is the King's center of the future

and at this point in the season they are out of the playoff picture. So it makes sense to get DMC as much burn time as possible.

by mattrick on Dec 18, 2010 12:33 AM PST up reply actions

I understand that

but even so, if DMC played 33, shouldn’t Dalembert at least get the other 15, instead of 4 minutes?

Besides, we could use a veteran presence, certainly one that can help quarterback our defense in second halves were we barely can get points on the scoreboard.

And if Dalembert isn’t part of this team’s future, isn’t it better to showcase him a bit and trade him, instead of leaving him on the pine and making him not much more than an expensive sparring partner in practice?

Dunking Dutchman

by RikSmits on Dec 18, 2010 1:23 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure he needs to be showcased-

at this point in his career, Dalembert is a known quantity.

by lead_pipe on Dec 18, 2010 9:37 AM PST up reply actions

I would agree

And our offense is stagnant enough without him. He probably would have played more if OK had a true big man, but that wasnt the case.

by MichaelMack on Dec 18, 2010 10:19 AM PST up reply actions

Fronting The Post

Is it just me or do teams consistently front our post players? Where is the counter to that? I counted 3-4 possessions in a row in the OKC game where that happened and the Kings had to back up and take an outside shot.

by defender96 on Dec 18, 2010 9:18 AM PST reply actions

What most teams do

is move the ball from side entry to the top of the key and lop it over the top. Watch next time and you will see. Thats the classic and best counter to a defender fronting the post, because it creates a better passing angle relative to the defender. For it to work the high post player has to make a good lob pass, and the low post player has to hold his position long enough. Our guys don’t do that so well. Cuz and Tyreke should be able to make it work eventually though with a third player involved.

by bench_blob on Dec 18, 2010 12:17 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed 100%

If you think back to the “heyday” teams, they could all handle the ball. They were all capable of catching and passing. Our current squad has some issues in this department., as few of the players are adept at catching and distributing the ball in the same motion. Maybe it’s a confidence thing, a familiarity thing, a play set thing, or a combination of those things and more. But the good teams do it, and we don’t.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 18, 2010 12:21 PM PST up reply actions

I'm with you

I was so accustomed to seeing someone front, the wing move the ball to the top of the key for a quick dump over the top/into the lane for a layup or flush. It’s really frustrating to see the team stymied by the tactic time and time again. Same goes for when teams go zone against us. Confusion and/or indecision seems to prevail.

Question: is it coaching, inexperienced players, general unfamiliarity with one another or (likely) a combination of all three that is leading to this?

by defender96 on Dec 18, 2010 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

True,

In the New Orleans game the KIngs used some back picks on DeMarcus’s defender then had DMC rotate to the opposite side of the lane to receive the entry pass. It was a move that I hadn’t seen before, and looks promising.

I am so tired of the KHTK peeps saying this is a young team and it's not PW's fault.

This team is 1 year older than the team we had last year and last years team was better. Yes, we added 1 rookie (DMC), but we also added a veteran (Sammy). This years team has obviously regressed. How is that not the fault of the coach? The fact of the matter is that PW has failed this team by his inability to decide on a starting rotation, his substitution patterns, and utter failure to get this team to play any sort or organized offense. Seriously, this team plays the same type of offense one would see in a pick-up game on the playground. Bad jump shot after bad jump shot.

by RemoGaggi on Dec 19, 2010 12:23 AM PST reply actions

Here's something to think about

A player’s prime year is usually around 27. The Kings have 1 guy at 20 years old (Cousins), 2 at 21 (Evans/Whiteside), 2 at 22 (Greene/Casspi), and one at 24 (JT). The other main rotation pieces are Beno (28), Carl (27), Cisco (29), Sammy (29). Pooh is a 27 year old rookie. So yes. They’re young. Even younger than last year’s team when you factor in that we lost Nocioni, Udoka, Martin, May, and Kenny Thomas.
