There is NO benefit to playing him.

Personally, I fully believe that he has played himself out of the rotation.

Hurt….? Nonsense. I’m tired of it. He has a mental problem, like Steve Sax throwing to second, or Nick Anderson and free throws. The dude can’t make an uncontested layup. Let’s not sugarcoat it – based upon THIS year alone – the dude BLOWS. I’m very nervous about what we are seeing from him. Is he ON something?

nervous?

gotta admit i kinda feel the same way. only because he’s a sg without a shot (atleast as of now.) also irritating how he doesn’t pass the ball and reward his big men on the break and will go 1 on 3 in transition instead. no doubt he has star potential and a lot of upside…but idk if he’s a team player or a ME first kinda guy. what has me nervous is i’m starting to think he’s the later

by Gold Miner 916 on Dec 23, 2010 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

I don't really wanna dive into this much given there is a game going but

I have zero clue how one could now say they are “starting to think he’s the later” when he played with the exact same mentality and court awareness last year. Just baffles me.

Sure- maybe he has some element of it. That DOES NOT explain his worthlessness. The guy can’t shoot layups anymore. The guy is shooting 38% for the season so far.

I’m not saying that Tyreke ain’ having his problems, I’m just saying it’s too early too completely give up on him. And yes I like to think of myself as a true fan unlike half the people on this site

Think of yourself any way you like.

I don’t define ‘fandom’ as blind optimism or maudlin devotion.

IMO, being a fan is about following the team regardless. Criticism can and should be part of this process. If I wasn’t a fan, I wouldn’t bother participating.

I also don’t see where I’ve said that I have completely given up on Tyreke. I have stated that he ‘blows’ because that has been accurate so far this year, and the sample is getting bigger every day.

If a player doesn't call for the ball or get open, don't expect another to give it up

I actually saw Evans make some good passes when players actually moved, but that all disappeared in the end. The blame can go to any one person or the whole team. Idk but I think it’s the latter

Nonsense.

The playmaker’s JOB is to create opportunities and movement. If Evans has the ball, he needs to make something happen. He should have been looking for Beno.

To put it in perspective, Evans had 3 assists and was 2-13 from the floor. Oh yea. He also had 4 turnovers.

Tyreke has blows so far this year and blows currently (assuming blows is 17 5 and 5 with crappy ass shooting), I agree with you.
I infer from you saying Tyreke blows, that he blows past , present and future.
Crazy would be saying Reke has had a good year, or forcasting the future when 65-70 of his 95 or so games have been very good..

This actually makes sense

It’s not surprising to me that Tyreke has struggled some in his second season. Alot of players do. But the complete regression has been baffling. It reminds me of what happened to Pablo Sandoval this last year. He had some personal things going on in his life and he had a rough second season, far lower than his previous.

I certainly feel bad for Tyreke, but at least this gives us a reason as to why this happening. It’s been pretty depressing when our “franchise” player has taken such a downturn.

Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

by darkadun on Dec 23, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions

That's what I figured.

Seeing Evans stand around so much, making so many careless passes, and missing practically wide-open layups (not even hitting the rim…) made me think his head wasn’t even in the game tonight. At one point, Peaches was even asking out loud, “Is Evans even IN this game?”

I was in Kings Row 2 tonight.

What pissed me off the most was when, at 6:00 or so, Westphal put Tyreke, Landry and Beno back in. WHY ON EARTH WOULD TYREKE BE PUT BACK IN?!? Well we scored, what, 2 points after that? 4?

I was incredibly pissed. I said “why is he putting our starters back in?”

He's our superstar and the blueprint calls for it

Suggestions that bad coaching is in any way responsible for a team that cannot execute anything at all, stands around clueless, and collapses in the fourth quarter nightly shall be summarily mocked and dismissed as knee jerk panic.

by lchristmas on Dec 23, 2010 10:50 PM PST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

Respectfully disagree

Many here are not arguing in Westphal’s favor – merely that he should not be dispatched until a suitable replacement is in available. Also, does replacing the coach make sense when the talent base is sub-standard?

Now, that being said, each one of these losses likely moves Westphal closer and closer to dismissal. And if the Kings fired him tomorrow, it would make more sense than had they fired him a month ago. I am still against his dismissal at this point, as I just don’t see how/where it is going to improve this team. However, I certainly respect the opinions that have effectively listed their reasons why they feel Westphal should go, whether I agree with them or not.

As such, I cannot agree with your assessment that such an opinion is “summarily mocked and dismissed as knee jerk panic.” This is certainly done by some, but not by all, and it especially has not been done by the purveyors of this site. Perhaps it is statements such as these that engenders some of the responses that you receive, though I am sure that you would be subject to some unfair reaction regardless. The opportunity for you is to choose to either rise above it, or wallow in it. It is certainly your right to select the direction of your choice.

I was specifically referring to pookey guru and some others above

Going with the old OMG THERES GLOBAL WARMING BLAME WESTPHAL FOR IT in the thread. it is obvious that this team completely sucks in nearly every conceivable way and is getting worse. I have seen enough evidence to conclude that paul westphal does not know how to put these players in a position to win games or to improve to win games in the future. Therefore, I want him fired now. The rest of this season will be a waste with him. Without him, maybe the team improves and maybe some of the players actually start to “get it” under a new coach.

At minimum, get me a coach who makes sure beno and not tyreke has the ball in the last 2 minutes. Now, you might have to actually put tyrekes ass on the bench to accomplish this. A novel concept that is completely beyond pw.

by lchristmas on Dec 23, 2010 11:39 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I respect that,

and you could be absolutely right. But when we reached that point with Theus, we replaced him with Natt and the season was still lost. I would have considered Elie as an interim, but I don’t think that the franchise can reward him with that opportunity coming out of the DUI – the whole E-Muss thing works against him here, not to mention his own dumb decision.

So who do they bring in right now to replace Westphal, knowing that there is very likely a lockout (perhaps a prolonged one) looming at the end of the season? The timing here sucks. I mean, if they could find a guy that would all but be a guarantee of developing the youth, great. Otherwise, I’m not so sure that I see the point.

So it comes back to the question that I have long asked, and that is who replaces Westphal, bearing in mind that the Maloofs will probably not (and probably should not) open their wallets at this point in time for a tenured, high priced coach.

So let's say we're sitting at 10 wins

At the all star break, which is what we’re on pace for. Then what? Just ride it out with PW?

by outrider on Dec 24, 2010 12:02 AM PST up reply actions

My preference would be to find a guy that could develop the youth

But the odd timing is that with the CBA expiring on June 30, and with a prolonged lockout a real possibility, and with the current economical climate surrounding this team, any replacement would likely be a two month rental (or a four month rental if they let Westphal go right now). It’s a tough time to make a change and get a positive return on investment. Not impossilbe, but very, very tough.

Would it surprise you

If Petrie/Maloofs let him coach this team to a 15 win season?

by outrider on Dec 24, 2010 12:16 AM PST up reply actions

I know that the Maloofs would hate it from a PR standpoint,

but it makes the most economical sense, unless they really think that they are bringing in a long term solution at head coach. If they replace Westphal with (say) Jim Eyen, that is certainly not going to sell any more tickets. The question is, can Eyen do a better job of developing the youngsters? And remember, “He can’t do worse” is really not an answer here – they are already paying Westphal to be head coach. They are not going to pay extra for another coach unless they are pretty certain that they are going to see tangible results.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 24, 2010 12:25 AM PST up reply actions

Where does this go when the season is over?

To me, your scenario above is the Maloofs/Petrie basically admitting (to themselves anyway) that they have zero confidence in PW. It’s not that they don’t want to fire him, it’s just that they have no good answer for the then what question. That’s a tough situation to move forward in.

by outrider on Dec 24, 2010 12:36 AM PST up reply actions

On the other side of the new CBA,

you hope that as a franchise you are now a buyer in a sellers market. You have an additional asset in the form of a very good draft slot/pick, and you are one of the few teams with tangible cap space. You fortify the roster, which in turn attracts a better coaching option. You hand Westphal his walking papers at that time. Yes, he is already extended through 2012, but the new players and coach sell more than enough tickets to offset Westphal’s small (by NBA standards) contract.

We’ve gone the get what you pay for route and not surprisingly, we got what we paid for. If they want somebody established, they’re gonna have to pay. Are they willing to do that?

I think

that once the talent on the roster merits and excites an upper tier coach, it happens. And I hope that this occurs on the other side of the new CBA.

Wouldn't it be weird

If they waited to hire a new coach until after making free agent acquisitions? Wouldn’t that basically mean that PW could have input on players he’d never be coaching? Are Petrie/Maloofs really going to go to that level of theater?

That would be a weird scenario to me.

by outrider on Dec 24, 2010 12:59 AM PST up reply actions

Well,

they hired Westphal only a couple of weeks before they drafted Evans, so I don’t know how much input he had. In ’98, they signed Peja, drafted J-Will and traded for Webber before they signed Adelman. I suppose it will depend on the situation.

Because natt backfired doesn’t mean this will too. Elie is fine with me. Maybe they get better maybe they won’t. They ain’t gettin better with paul. Its just that simple to me at this point. How many more times can this team be booed of its home court by what could not have been 8000 people?

I don’t think that he will be fine with the organization due to the DUI. I just can’t see the Kings promoting a guy after the DUI run that they’ve had with Musselman, Nocioni, Wright and Elie.

Where a “suitable replacement” needs to be identified before he needs to be fired. We have unfortunately reached the “status quo is so shitty and unacceptable that something must be tried” stage. I am not suggesting hiring carrot top as coach. Give some assistant coach a shot and see if it works. How could it get worse? Is it possible to lose more games than you play?

This lack of talent angle is revisionist history. Going into the year nobody thought the talent was this bad. Nobody thought we should be losing to bad, shorthanded teams at home. The team has under achieved and regressed. much if not most of this goes on the coach. Tyreke is awful but always plays anyway. Omri, donte and carl are worse than last year. Dalembert is not used properly and has played much better in the past.

PW has to go.

Laughing at grant as he over excitedly yells TY REKE EVANS as tyreke tosses up a glassbreaking layup or a fadeaway 3 that misses by 4 feet

Anxiously awaiting the inevitable day that dmc goes full toddler tantrum, banging his oversized babyfists on the court, requiring the intervention of not only his high school coach but his mommy to bring a bottle and binkie

WHich opposimg journeyman will look like michael jordan tonight? Radmanovic? Boykins? Reggie williams? TUNE IN AND FIND OUT!

4th quarter kings total points vs. turnovers. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat more than you might expect.

After carrying the team to a lead, when will beno get his last fg attempt? 6 minutes left? 5? 8:30?

Cisco’s bonehead play of the day. This one has really become popular because its quite the mixed bag. He could commit a horrible charge. He could forget the clock. He could commit an intentional foul to give when there isn’t one. He might go into a celebratory shuffle when you least expect it. So many possibilities.

samuel dalembert trying to score a basket. Don’t really need to elaborate on this one.

The many looks of dismay on assistant coaches eyen (?) and elie shown in the background on slow motion replay shots of any crucial failure, usually at least three in the last 2 minutes of every game.

Beno udrih is our best player. On a healthy roster. Just think about that.

Most of these people on these BLOGS are idiots, ok? They’re IDIOTS. i mean, theyre buffoons, ok?”

Typical napes, repeating himself, not saying much… The best part, somebody who I bet will read my post and I hope could improve on my recollection calls in in the middle and says “hey grant, but I get a lot of good information on a site like sactown royalty” (haha, identify yourself caller)

Grant then clarifies that the commenters are the idiots and that SOME of the people who run the blogs are ok (because he has met them) but this is just for football blogs and he would rely on them for, say statistical information.

Honest question for the "bench Reke" folks

And I preface this by agreeing that he has been flat horrible. If you sit him, whow do you play?

The response of Greene or Casspi is not acceptable, as (a) neither has played the 2 this year, and (b) neither has really played any better than Evans over the stench stretch of the year. I think we all agree that Luther Head is a “no.” Statistically, Garcia has not been that much better than Evans, except outside the arc, of course. Udrih has been better, but he’s already on the floor. So are we saying to go with Jeter and Udrih in the backcourt? Jermaine Taylor over Tyreke?

I’m not defending Westphal here, but simply this roster does not have a lot of options to play around Tyreke, as the team is kind of built around Tyreke. Unless he is too hurt to perform, he really has to play. We don’t really have a lot of other options.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 24, 2010 12:08 AM PST reply actions

I'm not saying to drop him from the starting lineup or to dnp cd him

But when he does not have it down the stretch, sit him. Depending on the matchups, jeter-beno, beno-garcia, and even beno-casspi or greene are viable options

I don’t think you can fairly compare omri and dontes ineffectiveness to tyrekes. Tyrekes ineffectiveness is front and center. It is game-losing and ball-dominating. If he is in the game he is firing up bricks and turning it over down the stretch. At least getting another warm body in the game gets the ball in beno’s hands.

I would rather have beno with the ball and omri standing in the corner than tyreke with the ball and beno standing in the corner.

Apparently at least under our current coach, tyreke playing down the stretch without dominating the ball is not an option. And I don’t know what good he is off the ball anyway.

by lchristmas on Dec 24, 2010 1:03 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed about Evans' ineffectiveness being "front and center"

I just think that this team is so bereft of talent that we are not going to win without him playing, and playing well.

by lchristmas on Dec 24, 2010 1:36 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

That's a good point

Westphal has mentioned that because of ’Reke’s inability to practice as much, his stamina is not where it should be. It would be interesting to see if he had more left in the tank late if they sat him more early.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 24, 2010 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

The problem is that we're not winning with him, and anyone on the team can get hot.

Currently, he has the lowest FG% on the team, even lower the Dalemberts. And, I’m not sure who put up the stats but late in games he’s worse. Even PW made the analysis during one of the post practice interviews, that he doesn’t have the stamina to play late in games because he wasn’t practicing and working out due to his foot problems.

It pretty much seems that we definitely have a better chance without him late in the game. And, I didn’t like taking Pooh out while Boykins was still playing late in the 4th. Pooh was just doing an excellent job staying in front of him. I think I would have gone with Pooh & Cisco/Beno.

But at this point, it probably wouldn’t hurt to not play him late or take him out in the fourth quarter, as his decision making is at it’s worst towards the end.

I would be ok with Garcia getting a run

Not because it would necessarily be better with him in the lineup, but because Tyreke needs to rest and to see that he can lose playing time. I don’t believe the conditioning excuse, because he worked his butt off all off season, and isn’t really exerting himself much anyways. If his foot is hurting, which the jury is still out on, then he needs to rest, if he can’t get his head in the game, then his body shouldn’t be in there either. I think a huge turnaround could happen for Tyreke if he got a week or so of limited/no time so he can rest/work out personal issues, which in turn would help create a turnaround for the entire team.

by prowseinthehouse on Dec 24, 2010 9:38 AM PST up reply actions

I do believe the conditioning response,

because his practice time has been greatly inhibited due to his injuries, and that extracts a toll.

I like the idea of knocking down his minutes – give him the first and last 7 minutes of each half (provided that the long stretch of sitting doesn’t cause his foot to tighten up). You’ve reduced his minutes, and you still have your best talent on the floor at the start and end of the game.

by section214 on Dec 24, 2010 10:12 AM PST up reply actions

I'd be cool with that.

I definitely DON’T want him controlling the ball in meaningful late game possessions though.

by Hoops Mike on Dec 24, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

I can certainly understand why

But soone or later, the next progression needs to occur. That is, the mindset that worked against Denver and Chicago and Milwaukee last year (and didn’t work against Cleveland or the Lakers) has been outed by the league. The next step is not to unilaterally take the ball out of Tyreke’s hands, but to set up plays where ’Reke can drive and kick. However, having him play off the ball can also accomplish this, as opposing teams are apparently geared to focus on Evans. Sending the ball in one direction and Evans in the other could definitely open things up for the Kings offense.

And 1 – The Dubs game was as much about Cousins’ late low post turnovers as anything from an offensive point of view. Unfortunately, 20 year old bigs don’t come into this league with a knowledge of how to pass out of a double team, at least not the types that develop as quickly as NBA double teams. The trials and tribulations of watching young players grow up right before your eyes – very frustrating.
