So we have cap room, who can we use it on?

There has been all this talk of all the cap room we will have. I have seen little talk on who would be available to use that cap on (assuming there are no trades). So here's a list, who would you sign that would elevate this team?

Helpful Tips
If a player's type reads Restricted it means that the player meets the requirements to be a restricted free agent only if the team presents a qualifying offer in the appropraite amount to the player at the conclusion of the player's current contract. If the qualifying offer is not tendered to the player, the player will be an unrestricted free agent.

This section does NOT include contract options of any type. For a list of contract options please view the relevant page by clicking here

So there you have it. The only real big difference maker is Carmello Anthony. Not coming here. So who would you sign and what type of effect do you expect to have on the team. And remember Landry, Dalembert, and Jackson will join that list. Do you resign Landry?

Here is my own opinion on this. I don't believe the restricted free agents will be available. And the good ones will be matched by their original team. Obviously Hortford and Noah really excite me but there is no way we get them. The one guy on the list that might be available is Wilson Chandler, especially if the Knicks go after Anthony. So I will assume we make him an offer and he accepts without the Kinicks matching,

Signed : Wilson Chandler

Our big free agent signing would be :

Signed : Mo Williams

The other players I try to get to Sacramento and assume they will sign mid teir type of contracts :

Signed : Shane Battier, Boris Diaw

The player I hope will take a lesser, maybe incentive laden contract and hope he has a comeback.

Signed Michael Redd.

New Team

PG : Mo Williams
SG : Tyreke Evens
SF : Wilson Chandler
PF : Jason Thompson
C : Demarcus Cousins

Bench

Shane Battier
Boris Diaw
Michael Redd
Omri Caspi
Beno Udrich
Donte Green
Hassan Whiteside
Francisco Garcia
(1st round pick)

I really don't follow college ball so I am unsure who might be available with the top 3 picks which I'm sure we will be somewhere up there by seasons end. But this team would finally have outside shooting and a balence of vetern leadership at multiple positions. It doesn't look like an elite squad, but if Tyreke gets right and Cousins develops then it could grow to become a winner. I think the mix would be better. But it's hard to imagine this team making a leap through free agency without Cousins and Tyreke becoming BIGTIME players.

What does anyone else think?

As an aside

The players that Geoff Petrie has coveted in the past on this list are :

Nene Hilario
Jamal Crawford
Joakhim Noah
Aaron Brooks

Now he can’t sign all those guys, but I bet he could get Crawford and Hilario here. Would those additions be good? What if that was the big two free agents we got. I know people would get excited if Petrie somehow landed both Brooks and Noah instead. Just something to think about.

May need to update the post ninja

I’m fairly sure Horford, Noah, and Tony Parker already signed extensions with their respective teams

I'm sorry

I pulled the info from an outdated ESPN webpage apparently, so I am sorry I didn’t get updated info on signings.

I am sorry for the misspelling, I was flipping back and forth between pages rapidly, and I am too lazy to correct them. Most basketball fans know the players I was writing down.

I also didn’t add all of the names. I tried to keep players that would have some marque appeal. The only major name I didn’t add was Yao Ming who looks to be done anyway.

A lot of these players have player options.

Such as Nene and Mo Williams. Put those in so people can differentiate. Marc Gasol should be a top priority, IMO, but with Cousins taking the C spot, Gasol may not be needed.

He’s progressed nicely. Proof that Isiah Thomas DOES have a feel for talent, but little else when it comes to running a NBA team.

5 Signings? Put the pipe down

There is no freakin way we sign five guys during the offeseason.

We got jazzed about the likes of Mikki Moore for god sake, you think we can get those five guys?

We need to move our cap space via trade for some talent and hope to round out our squad with some other guys.

It’s pretty easy math… the team with the lowest payroll doesn’t sing 40million in player salaries in a single offseason…it just won’t happen.

Give me two guys with some age and experience who can still contribute and add that to this years top 3 draft pick and I’ll be doing cartwheels.

by LDM on Dec 26, 2010 11:42 PM PST reply actions

None of the players that I have signing with us......

……Are max contracts. So signing five of them would be easily done, if they agree to sign. We will only have 28 million in contracts next season.

If Petrie signs anyone of the guys above to a max contract not named Carmello Anthony then he should be fired. Plus many teams sign more than two free agents in a season and let’s face it we need lots of help.

by nerdninja on Dec 26, 2010 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

The other thing....

I agree that trades may be the way to go to do a major upgrade. However for the sake of this arguement I said assuming we don’t make trades. The only trades that the Kings sound interested in is ones that save them money at the moment. The Malloofs have repeatedly said they will not add salary until next year, then they plan to spend after the new CBA.

So thinking the KIngs will do a major deal before the upcoming off-season is dreaming I think.

by nerdninja on Dec 27, 2010 12:02 AM PST up reply actions

Right on

Thanks for posting this, nerdninja.

I never engage in trade or FA speculation but…

1. Petrie should be extremely cautious with forking over big-time cash to overrated, MLE-type FAs. I don’t completely trust Petrie’s ability to weigh costs/benefits in the FA market. Just because a player is available — and our long-term plan was to use money after the CBA — doesn’t mean you have to spend it haphazardly.

2. Have a system in place first. Are we returning to the Princeton? Are we staying with Westphal’s vague “system”? Petrie needs to hire a coach who will implement a sound system — and then acquire personnel who fit.

3. In a vacuum — that is, without regard to money or potential systems we’d run — I’d try to sign Tyson Chandler, Shane Battier, Jason Kapono or even Lou Amundson if he opts out. Since nobody in the FA class is an All Star-caliber player (with the possible exception of Chandler) we need to spend wisely. Petrie will probably have to address the most glaring need — PG — in a trade.

4. Trades could be more important than FA signings. (Personally, I’d look into Kevin Love. I bet David Kahn would ask for Tyreke in return, however.) Regardless, Petrie will probably be able to improve the Kings most through trades, given the weak FA class.

I only pray the Maloofs don’t get overexcited & splurge on mediocre talent, a la Detroit Pistons. It’ll take Petrie at his most calculating & cerebral to resist the urge to spend hastily. I have no doubt Petrie can makeover the Kings & furnish a decent team — as long as he’s intelligent about it.

by MadProphet on Dec 27, 2010 1:19 AM PST reply actions

Good response

I really agree with the need to get a long term coach that has a system that they run before we just nab players.

I think the free agent class has players of need for us and I don’t think any but one is worth a max contract (that’s Anthony). The trouble is none of the free agents will propel a team to championship quality. That is why the need is so large for Cousins and Tyreke to develop into those types of players. Otherwise we will lock up our cap space and become a middle of the road team. Not exactley where we want to be.

The trouble I see with trades are, players are traded for a reason. If we are taking a player we either have to give up a lot to get them, or take a problem for less. It worked out taking Webber, but when we got him he was in all sorts of trouble in regards to drugs and known as a malcontent. In short we gambled and won. Just like we gambled and kind of lost with Artest (although we got a great half a year out of him with Adelman).

So like you mention with Kevin Love, if we trade our best assets for him does that move us forward? Last I checked Kevin Love was not leading the Timberwolves to the playoffs. Not to mention we already have Demarcus whom we hope becomes a great low post guy. So it will not be so simple to stock our team with talent through a trade.

That is why no matter what, for us to become a playoff team again we need Tyreke and Demarcus to become all star caliber players. And to see what is happening this year in terms of their development is killing me. I know Tyreke is hurt, but his decision making on the court is just bad this year, not better. And what are we doing with Demarcus? The way Westphal is going about this may have worked for Hawes, but Demarcus seems like a very different character, I just don’t see this ending well.

And to have so many siding with a bad coach instead of a potential star. I get he’s young and immature and does lame stuff from time to time on the court, but to bench him like you would some middle school player? Then have a group calling for him to go to the D-league? It makes no sense.

by nerdninja on Dec 27, 2010 1:43 AM PST up reply actions

Rockets got Kevin Martin through a trade.

If you want to be your best, you have to do your best, otherwise you are only second rate.

ALA what the Thunder did with Aldrich/Peterson.

This

First, I really enjoyed the FanPost, and the effort that went into it. And there may be a free agent or two that could help this team. But the other list that needs assembling (and it would be difficult to impossible to assemble at this point) is the list of players that will be on the market as a result of the new CBA.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Dec 27, 2010 11:19 AM PST up reply actions

So lets talk new CBA

What do you think that might look like?

My guess is that it could include a hard cap in exchange for continued guarenteed contracts. That is why I am suspicois of the Maloofs intent. If a hard cap is in place then it would preclude them from making huge moves in trades and they would in turn say they need to save money to resign the guys they have, right?

I have heard, which is what may have prompted your post, that teams will have an option to buy out contracts to get below the cap. Assuming that we can assume large contracts to mid tier guys will be bought out early. So in a feeble attempt to compile such a list here is the short list of players that I would imagine making that list. Feel free to add or subtract names you think won’t be there (if that becomes a reality).

Josh Smith – Atlanta
Kevin Garnett – Boston
Gerald Wallace – Bobcats
Antawn Jamison – Cleveland
Elton Brand – Philly
Kirk Hinrich – Washington
Rashard Lewis – Washington
Jason Terry – Dallas
Chancey Billups – Denver
Baron Davis – Clippers
Andrew Bynum – Lakers
Vince Carter – Suns
Marcus Camby – Portland

I compiled these names because these guys don’t produce like MAX level players. They all will have 1-2 years left on their contracts after this season (Guys like Okefor that have more than 2 years I would imagine be harder to buy out the contract for). And in a lot of cases teams have young players that could be ready to step into their positions.

Now in this scenario we could have a fun group to choose from assuming they would be A) willing to come to Sactown and B) be willing to take a large salary cut. Of this group I would love to see Josh Smith, Chabcey Billups or Jason Terry in a KIngs uniform. Any of those guys would fit a HUGE need on the team.

Now I think there is a good chance no major changes are made to the current CBA except capping contract amounts for allowing the same number of years on a guarenteed contract. At which point the contract staus of these players would remain the same.

Just the same all could be had in a trade if a team is looking to dump salary. Maybe the Kings can pick up a player like Billups for picks if we absorb the large contract. But do we really want to fill our cap room with a large contract of an aging star? It would be a tough sell to fans I think too.

It will definately be interesting to see what the new CBA brings though.

I've gotta say,

I like your idea of Battier. He’ll play next season at the age of 33, so he’s no spring chicken, but he provides the veteran leadership we’ve been desperately lacking this season. He’ll model and hopefully demand the kind of professionalism that takes studying tape of opponents seriously— the kind of professionalism B-Jax suggested might be lacking in our current crop. As a small forward, Battier shores up our weakest position while hopefully being able to mentor his replacement in Casspi and/or Greene.

What salary will he command on the free market? And will he opt to sign a relatively cheap contract to play with a contender? Those are two considerations that could keep this from working out. However, most of the real contenders with the exception of the Magic are pretty set at the small forward position (unless he wanted to play behind Pierce or Artest). So assuming he doesn’t sign cheaply with a contender, the question is how much would be too much to pay for him.

He’s a 39% three-point shooter who defends well, plays team-oriented ball, and provides a veteran presence in the twighlight of his prime. Offhand, I’d be inclined to offer him 28 million over four years with a declining value ($8m, $7.5m, $6.5m, $6m) under the current CBA. Is that falling into the trap of the midlevel contract? Is it lowballing a valuable contributor? I’m not sure.

And if this were the Asinine Trade Thread, I might suggest offering Landry and Milwaukee’s second rounder for Battier just so we get him for the remainder of the season. Houston only does it if they’re really interested in having Landry back and if they’re willing to hand over the SF position to Buddinger and Terrence Williams, which would basically mean accepting that they need to start rebuilding with young players again in the wake of Yao’s injury.

IF I am the Kings I would start buying team's mid round picks

I think the only way the Kings sign a big name player is if they overpay 3-5M.

And, quite honestly, I’m not sure buying picks has done that much for the teams who have done so.

Let's spend it up

This is what we’ve been waiting for right? All the salary dumps, penny pinching, & the Martin trade has all come down to this right???

So here it is do whatever you have to do to get us Mo Williams & Jeff Green. Not that these are great players but great players aren’t coming here. These players would fit perfect with the stars we have. If we have enough money maybe Shane Battier.

New line-up:
Mo Williams
Tyreke Evans
Shane Battier
Jeff Green
Demarcus Cousins

Perfect mix of inside & outside players. Also pretty damn good defensive line-up if we can get a decent defensive coach. Either head coach or add a great defensive assistant.

FAs

The only way we are going to get a FA to come to Sacramento is by overpaying for him and more importantly by giving him 4-5 years where he can only get 3 elsewhere. There are a few players on this list that I would commit to for that long…
Shane Battier
Andre Kirilenko
Jamal Crawford
Glen Davis (5 years, but not major money)
Kendrik Perkins (5 years, but not major money)

A few guys to spend mid to major cash on for a 2 years shot in the dark
Michael Redd
Yao Ming
Greg Oden
Peja

by OKO on Dec 27, 2010 11:11 PM PST reply actions

I'd commit 8 to 9 mil on Oden

Even though he’s been constantly injured, he still does have a career ahead of him and his per minute numbers are nothing to gawk at.

by CloudyEyes on Dec 29, 2010 1:02 AM PST up reply actions

Well, it's a gamble

Oden could be worth $0 to $15 mil/season based on how his injuries pan out. He gets healthy, he could come at a great value. If he stays broken, he’ll be an overplayed albatross on the bench, like how K9 was. I’d take the gamble.

by CloudyEyes on Dec 31, 2010 2:55 AM PST up reply actions

K9 was on the bench because we traded him for a worse albatross

putting us in the same position on purpose, sounds foolish to me.

that there are some players you would overpay for (but they are not on this list), or that these players are likely to be overpaid (so we shouldnt get in the bidding war for them)?

by DustyG on Dec 29, 2010 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

Aaron Brooks and Andre Kirilenko

would be perfect fits.

Though Brooks is more of a shot 1st PG (who really isn’t these days) he is still a great young guard.

Brooks and Evans would give opposing guards fits.

Kirilenko would bring great defense to the team, great energy, and all around good skills at every aspect of the game. He can rebound, defend, and is athletic.

PG: Aaron Brooks
SG: Tyreke Evans
SF: Kirilenko
PF:
C: Cousins
Bench: Lottery Pick, 2nd round pick
Casspi
Whiteside

and whoever else is left.

I really would like Beno, Garcia, Thompson and Donte Greene to be traded for a solid player. Nothing to special, but someone good and a trade partner that is realistic…..like Washington and Kirk Hinrich, Detroit and Tayshaun Prince, the Pacers and TJ Ford, or the Raptors and Jose Calderon.

For the sake of speculation I’m going to say that the Kings trade Beno, Carl Landry, and Greene and our 2nd round pick for Hinrich and Nick Young.

Then, with the 2nd pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select PF Jared Sullinger from Ohio St.

Then we trade Francisco for a 2nd round pick and draft the SG from Baylor LaceDarius Dunn.

2011 Sacramento Kings:
PG: Aaron Brooks
SG: Tyreke Evans
SF: Kirilenko
PF: Thompson
C: Cousings
Bench:
PG: Hinrich
SG: Dunn, Nick Young
SF: Casspi
PF: Jared Sullinger
