Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

"At the six minute mark, coach said 'Go in.' I walk up to the scorer's table and then head back because (there) was a timeout coming up. On the way back, I said to coach, 'Hey they're playing well. (Do) you want to let them play it out? He said, 'I want you in.' I said, 'OK.' So I was ready to go in at the timeout, then the timeout happened at 3:37 and he looked at me and said, 'Let's just let them play it out.' And I said, 'OK, that's fine.'"

Hope this

doesnt turn into a problem between PW and Kmart

Way too much being made of this.

The kids have to learn how to win, have to believe in themselves for next year and the one after. PW made the decision and if there’s any blame (I don’t believer there is) it goes to him.

We will find out a little about Kevin tonight.

How will he play with more adversity around him? You learn a lot about a player in situations like this. Some players are fueled by negativity others go in to a shell. It will be interesting to say the least.

Westphal always plays those with the hot hand.

I’d still have like to have seen Martin put in at the 2-3 minute mark, just to have a decent free throw shooter in, but the lineup on the floor was playing well.

Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.

Far from over

I will say this isn’t over — you can tell just by the way Amick talks about details left unwritten in his post. There’s more to the story re: Martin and the organization. I hope the deadline causes it to blow away.

by Tom Ziller on Feb 17, 2010 12:01 PM PST reply actions

As Sam said in the article... It is ODD...

I agree with Ziller that there is more to this than meets the eye, and it isn’t normal for a star player to just sit out a close game in the forth quarter. I don’t care how unselfish Kmart is. Finally, I still don’t see how Beno was the better option.

Interesting...

Beno has been outstanding this year. He slumped a little, but has come back strong…

by MustangMBS on Feb 17, 2010 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

Because

Beno was playing better on both sides of the court. Beno shot about 60% last night (and was aggessive not only shooting but cutting) while Kevin was terrible defensively and I suspect shot around 30%.

Not over

Why do I get the feeling Amick is going to give us an article justifying Martin’s eratic behavior? I know all of you are big Amick fans, but he his blog post teasing us with some scoop but not wanting to get in to it rubs me the wrong way. The issue with Kevin is that the same thing that makes him a great guy makes him lousy leader and a poor player to build a team around…his sensitivity, and I am sure Sam’s future articel will detail how bothered he by all the negative attention, which from my point of view is coming from a radio / tv personality and from no one inside the front office.

As for the trade deadline, this situation reminds me of the Mitch Richmond situation. Richmond was unhappy and the entire league thought they could steal him from the team because Petrie simply had to trade him. There was a supposed deal that was imminent around the trade deadline that was going to send Mitch to the Lakers for Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones….and what did Petrie do…he did nothing and let the situation settle down, and the rest is history. Kevin will be dealt, but it won’t be tomorrow…it will be this summer when the Kings are in a better situation to maximize Martin’s value.

by Mark Olberding on Feb 17, 2010 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

Wait wait wait...

So Kevin and Westphal were both basically on the same page about his playing time in the 4th, and this is a big deal because…? God, the Kings must not be making any trades if this is the big news of the day.

Interesting

that Amick jumps all over this and rides to Kevin’s defense, but didn’t think the Arco fans comment after the Suns game deserved a mention. Maybe he should stay neutral and give the fans all the info without picking sides and let them sift through it.

you always have to consider the source

even if its Sam Amick.

I think he does a great job, but we know he’s in Kevin’s corner to a certain extent. That doesn’t mean he’s not telling the truth or not being a good reporter, but it is slightly different when Sam Amick says something positive about Martin as opposed to someone with the opposite (slant/bias/pick a term) does.

Personally, like I said I think Amick does a great job, but it doesn’t surprise me we’re hearing “Kevin’s side” of the discussion. I don’t think it should surprise anyone that follows the Kings closely.

Here you go

Due to the ongoing Kings-Amick coverup, it’s the best I can do: Suns game comments

by coolcatreportdotcom on Feb 17, 2010 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

Just so we are on the same page

Grant is talking about these published comments from Kevin:

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/2517655.html

“It’s definitely affecting our team … because we have a young team, and a lot of guys haven’t been through stuff like this,” Martin said. “It’s pretty heavy. You can’t go anywhere without seeing your name, so I think it’s on a lot of people’s minds.”

Martin said he has not spoken with team officials about his future, and he talked like a player who wishes he knew what was next.

“Everybody has a plan around here, so they’ll do what they need to do, and we’ll play basketball once this gets out of the way,” he said. “It just feels like it’s all falling on you because you’re out in the press as far as being moved and stuff like that. From that aspect, it’s challenging.”

You, on the other hand, are talking about other comments Kevin made, where he basically said he was done with the city and the franchise…correct?

I just want to make sure I’m not misinterpreting your position.

I just read through it

I still don’t see where I’m misinterpreting your position. You wrote this:

I searched, but couldn’t find a Martin video. Which isn’t too surprising, because he basically cut the the cord with the fans if not the franchise. Not sure if 1140 archives their shows, but they played it during Kayte’s postgame show and replayed it while some guy subbed for Carmichael Dave. I was listening because I was on the three-hour drive home from the game.

Amick’s story may have more, and maybe he will blog about it at some point.

Martin said the trade talk was hurting the team a lot because there were a lot of young guys who haven’t been through that before. He specifically mentioned Arco, saying something like he looks forward to playing on the road because it can’t get worse at Arco. And he said the other stuff you posted about not feeling right.

My last try

You insinuated that there were additional (more inflammatory) comments by Kevin that the local media has essentially squelched because the tender sensibilities of the Sacramento fanbase couldn’t handle such things.

I insinuated that if there were comments of this manner, Grant Napear would be all over it, since he’s a one man anti-Kevin wrecking crew.

If these comments you have claimed to have heard were to surface, I’d be more than happy to post a public apology for doubting you. Until then, I’d say you were either hallucinating or making shit up to back up your anti-Kevin stance.

There, I think we are up to date.

Actually

Napear was all over it amonf other things, but I guess you forgot to read those threads. And I guess the other posters who said Kevin had dissed the Arco crowd and preferred to play on the road were also “hallucinating.”

Although the video or a transcript of his exact comments during the whinathon aren’t available and Amick is playing dumb, it’s been pretty well established that he said he’d rather play on the road than at Arco. Again, simply read the threads since Feb. 5.

Now you can say I claimed some more “inflamatory” (your word) comments were made and you can certainly disagree with the conclusions I drew and the rhetoric I used (“mutiny,” “cut ties,” etc.). But when the captain of your team says he’d rather play on the road than in front of the home fans, I find that a bit troublesome. Wouldn’t you agree?

The "threads"

Are discussion here…it’s not proof of a darn thing. As you mention, there’s still no video or transcript of these alleged statements at this point.

Admit it, you heard something you wanted to hear because you don’t like Kevin Martin. You ran with it, and now you have to deal with being called out on your b.s.

Considering your penchant for data analysis, I’m shocked you would make such a bold accusation without any actual proof.

Dissenting opinion

The 3D was cool enough but, to me, not any more impressive than the Toy Story re-releases this summer. The best I can say about the plot is that it is utterly banal. It is depressingly predictable, and as with many blockbusters introduces various genre tropes seemingly only for the sake of including them though they do nothing to advance the plot or even further the action.

That said, I didn’t see it in IMAX which I understand to be revelatory.

by lead_pipe on Feb 17, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

That last sentence is correct

the story was nothing new or even that good. It was a really cliche “War bad, environment good” plot. However, seeing it in 3D in IMAX was incredible. The visuals made the movie and I don’t think anyone can disagree. Had Cameron gotten someone to write a story that was actually decent it would be one of the best movies I’d ever seen

Eh, I think everything storywise has been done already

over & over. The big deal about this movie that was new is the technology used to make it. Which was displayed front & center. So I didn’t mind the story. It was still a good story albeit predictable. Keep in mind James Cameron had this story for many years. He wanted to wait until the technology came out to make it.

On the pregame show before JT's return game

Coach Westphal said something to the effect of wanting to try Jason off-the-bench due to his slump and that he likes what he’s seeing with Donté starting at the 4 spot. I believe he mentioned how Spencer reacted positively when they went through a similar thing with him earlier in the year (taking him out of the starting lineup for a bit when he was on a prolonged slump), and PW was hoping that JT would work his way out of his slump and back into the starting lineup.

I don’t have any links or direct quotes, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but that’s what I heard and it makes sense (even though I love me some JT), and it does appear that Jason is responding well to the strategy so far.

The trade deadline going past will cure most of these ills

Its not suprising that he’s a little down about being blamed for how bad the team was last year, being jumped on as ‘fragile’ (which he probably has some justified doubts about himself).
It will pass or it won’t. I’m betting we don’t even remember this next year.

Amick sure didn't sound like he thought the Kings will do much in the next day

I guess there’s less interest in KTEC than some thought and less in Noce than we hoped.
(Now I’ve been saying for a year that we’d be living with K-9 until the bitter end but there’s still 28 hours or so to prove me wrong)

"Kevin, I need to you to go up and get me a beer."

“Ah gee Coach, can’t you get Tyreke to do it? He’s the go to guy. He’s the dude that you always have do the dirty work.”

I do not know why this matters.

Kevin did not miss the free throws in the 4th quarter. Any complaints should be directed at those players.

"Doris" also called after the Suns game

and made pretty much the same comments.

This goes to show Martin's lack of an ability to be a leader.

I’m sorry, but a true Team leader and “star” tells the coach he want’s in for the closing of a close game, regardless of who says what.. You have to express leadership to show the team you’re a leader.

With all do respect Sammy

I’m pretty sure most of us have accepted the fact that Kevin isn’t a born leader. He trys but we all know we needed an alpha-dog. We can’t just wish someone to be that.

When Jason Jones says
You could give Martin credit for not wanting to disrupt what was working on the floor. That might even be called leadership.

Then yes, there are those out there who still think he can be a leader. So i would disagree that most have accepted that fact.

So a guy calls the radio

& starts ranting & raving about being disappointed in Kevin. He’s not this & he’s not that. Then he says"If WE told Kobe to go into the game you think he would say no?" Then he goes back to acting like he is a Kings fan. How lame is it that Laker fan looks for any chance to take shots at the Kings. Even going so far as to give the impression of being a Kings fan.

I love beating dead horses.

Yeah I heard that on the drive home from work.

He said Kobe would go off for 60. If I broke my rule to never call out of principle, I would have mentioned that Kevin isn’t a superstar. He’s not a go to guy. Never has been, never will be. He’s a Robin to Tyreke’s Batman.

I think he’s about to move the Kings to San Jose. :)

Relocation fee = $30 million

Infringement on Warriors territorial turf would probably cost another $50 million. Never happen.

and Vegas? Thats a joke.

The NBA has said they don’t even want to do the All-Star game there again because of what it does to players, they have no fanbase to build on and no Arena.

Agreed...

I like Koz, but he acts like this is a realistic possibility. Anything is possible with one of the richest men in the world. But I really don’t see anything like this going down. It makes so much more sense for Ellison to buy the Warriors and help turn that franchise around.

Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

Grant knows more about the NBA than him.

Although I'd rather talk to Koz

Because he at least might be willing to learn. Still he over-dramaticizes things a lot.

peaches is harping on Kevin in a round about way.

he is asking the callers if it is appropriate for the captain of the Kings to disappear after the game and hide from the media. like that isn’t a loaded qustion. and he said he wasn’t going to dump on Kevin.

Tyreke

left after the game? Cause according to Grant …. it’s Reke’s team

I listened for about 10 minutes

And every single caller was dogging Kevin. Imagine that!
