Kevin Martin Trade Discussion Part 2

All Updates will be at the first post, but this post will be up for more discussion.

Again, Kings trade Kevin Martin, Kenny Thomas, Hilton Armstrong, and Sergio Rodriguez for Houston's Tracy McGrady, Carl Landry (the main get for the Kings), and Joey Dorsey.  New York could be involved at some point between now and the deadline in a trade for McGrady, otherwise, he'll be bought out.

If this trade goes as finished, Kings will only have $33,000,000 in salary for 2010 FA.  4th most available cap space.

Carmichael Dave is currently extending his show. If you want to listen live over the internet here is the link. Sam Amick is currently on.

Hughes is expiring!!

I could be wrong

But I was under the impression Jeffries will be expiring next year, and Jeffries is a really reliable defender. He would probably be our best post defender. Paired with some post offense in landry, a prospect in Hill, and a pick. Yeah, sounds ok.

SAC-HOU-CHI-LAL deal that works for us

Here it is

Summary:

Rockets get KMart, K9, Hilton, Sergio.
Kings get Landry, Dorsey, BMiller, Jerome James, Tyrus Thomas, Sasha, Morrison.
Bulls get TMac, Noc.
Lakers get Hinrich.

Now we’d needa do some extraneous trades to get down to our max player count.

But we get to unload Noc to the Bulls, who would do this in order to get out of Hinrich’s contract (which is shorter than Noc but more money per year), and the Lakers want Hinrich cause of the arms race with Cleaveland.

In the end, we get a load of expirings plus Landry, Dorsey, and Tyrus Thomas, while unloading Noc.

As a money deal on a rebuilding team alone

Clearing money is tantamont. The CBA is dropping and the Kings are rebuilding. They can be beaten by Steph Curry and 4 D- Leaguers. By 30 points. The League will be going through a huge change this next year heading into the summer of 2011. For a team like the Kngs that is where the action will be and should be.

My take is with all the wierdness going on, Petrie initiated the meeting and didn’t like where things were heading with the team and Kevin’s attitude.

Why play in the 1st half but not the 2nd half?

Carl Landry'... one tough mofo!

Only a few weeks after Dikembe Mutumbo whipped his elbow around and knocked out Carl Landry’s front tooth (BAM!) he got the temporary replacement tooth knocked out by Carlos Boozer (BAM! BAM!) .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcIOLWGktZE&feature=related

Then, not long after that , Landry’s mouth collided with a Dirk Nowitzky. (BAM! BAM! BAM!) Carl lost three teeth and Dirk ended up needing stitches.

Of course even that pales in comparison to taking a bullet in the leg! Landry’s first interview after getting shot last March:

Sources say that the Knicks were also increasingly interested Wednesday in swinging a separate deal with the Chicago Bulls before the deadline that would send out Al Harrington in exchange for Tyrus Thomas and the expiring contract of former Knicks center Jerome James.

This shit is all my fault

Got tickets to the Celtics game and wore my K-Mart jersey for the first time. Even had a lively discussion with another Kings fan outside of ARCO that he wasn’t going anywhere. Never did I think I would have worn his jersey to Kevin’s last home game. Fuck me.

From yahoo... lets not piss this guy off...
McGrady’s agent, Arn Tellem, had worked diligently with the Rockets to broker a trade for T-Mac to the Knicks, and sources say he’s now determined to get him out of Sacramento. Tellem also represents the Kings’ prized rookie, Tyreke Evans.

hey PG - looking at the Trade Machine it looks like the Kings accept more salary

from Houston than the give out. The difference appears to be:$3,891,060 while the Kings are only $ 1,351,791 under the cap. A difference of $2,539,269, pluse the loss of the $4.5M luxury gift. There has to be more there as this cannot work as a money saving deal.

Went to basketball reference and they have an expanded stats page

that ranks the top 20 in 41 different categories. Not all of them are positive such as turnover leader (go Steve Nash) or foul leader (yay JT) but most list the best player in the league. If for nothing else you should go to this site to see how many ’Reke is in the league top 20 in. For the purposes of this thread I wanted to see how well Carl Landry does compared to the whole league. So out of 41 categories, not all of them positive Carl Landry ranked in the top 20 in the league in 8 of the positive ones:

Link: http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2010_leaders.html (don’t know how to do the link thing)

Field goal pct #13 .543
Free throws #17 235
P.E.R. #18 21.4
True Shooting PCT #9 .618
Effective Field Goal PCT #19 .618
Offensive Rebound PCT #19 9.6% JT is #11 @ 11.1%
Offensive Rating #12 119.8 just behind Pau Gasol
Offensive win shares #19 +4.2

Kevin was the second best scorer on the team, Carl Landry is going to be the second most productive player on this team and is only 3 pts behind where Kevin was in his 3rd year. We are going to miss Kevin for sure but it looks to me like Petrie has traded for a player who is growing into almost a good as scorer as Kevin is but brings a bunch more assets to the table than Kevin does.

For the record, Kevin was not listed in any of the lists but that might be because he hasn’t played enough minutes.

Cap space

The Kings got significant cap space and a good player in Carl Landry for Kevin Martin. That was the best they could get. Additionally, they got cash to help with the bottom line and they get to move a player with whom they weren’t working well with. The franchise and Kevin clearly agree it was time to move on.

I’m going to root for Kevin in Houston. I like the Rockets anyway, but this gives me another reason. Kevin, I think, knew the marriage was over in the back of his mind. I don’t think he dislikes the fans, but I think his love affair with Sac was clearly over. Too much shit had gone on between now and the start of the season. He needs a fresh start. Houston is very much that.

A minor move is possible. So is acquiring another player.

The other part of this is important too. The Kings could look for a 3rd PG (although I doubt it with Cisco back). There’s any number of things that this team could still do.

I’m not terribly high on Jordan Hill. Just because he has the names of two great NBA players and looks a bit like Chris Bosh doesn’t make him one. All his stats in college are worse than Blair’s, and I bet the Knicks would love to have Jennings or even DeRozan instead now. Depending on how steep the protections on the picks are, it’s still a good deal to move T-Mac’s expiring corpse/contract for that package. Even though it helps the Knicks to reach their goal of signing two significant free agents.

Apparently that was the hangup between the Knicks and Rockets about a direct swap: Strong or not so strong draft pick protection.

by Norsktroll on Feb 18, 2010 4:05 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think the Kings will want that deal.

I said this in my piece, but they will be going hard after Chris Bosh in Free Agency. T hey have the roster, the fit, and the need all there. They can even make a S&T work Norskie. I can’t imagine why they would risk that when they could save money this season, have ample cap space with the draft pick factored in, and still figure out a way to make another deal if Bosh doesn’t work out.

Hell someone like Troy Murphy might be had for free or very very little.

Also I get the feeling that New York is trying to maximize Jordan Hills value rather than wait for it to potentially sink any lower (which can't be much)

I think they are so desperate to get LeBron & Bosh to NY that they will gut the entire team. I just don’t think that will entice either guy to come there though.

I don't know

If Bosh would want to come to Sac, there will be other teams (miami, Ny, NJ) who can pay the same money and have more marketable cities. However I do agree with you that Bosh might lean to playing in Sac because of the rising talent we’ve got (Evans, Donte, Casspi).

Bulls don't have enough cap space to do it.

I don’t think the Bulls are a franchise that will appeal to Bosh either. I doubt NY is good enough, and the Nets are the one team that can rival the Kings ability to pay him AND offer a talented young roster.

I feel confident that the Kings can make a run at Bosh that they couldn’t have done a year ago. That’s the difference Norskie.

Bulls have 37 million in committed salary after the Salmons trade, and that’s before maybe shipping out Kirk & Tyrus today. The question is not if they have the money for one max free agent, but for two like what the Knicks try to do.

by Norsktroll on Feb 18, 2010 4:29 AM PST up reply actions

The Kings won't sign him.

I think it’s Bosh or bust. Before today, the Kings didn’t have the cap space to pursue it. The truth is, the Kings have the roster to entice Bosh that Miami doesn’t. Plus, Sac an offer just as much. If I were Bosh I’d think 3-4 years down the road.

Wade and Beasley would be a petty enticing duo

Other than that it gets obviously thin. But with Wade, Bosh, and Beasley, a lot of guys are going to want to go to that team. After those 3 you only really need solid role players anyway. Plus, they are in the east, which equals a much easy road to the playoffs and a good seed than the Kings would face…

Bosh is also newly single, same as Wade

Could be. Now they have Jamison, who LeBron wanted while the front office rather wanted Amare. If LeBron re-signs they still have the option to “Aaron McKie/Keith Van Horn” Szcerbiak or Shaq in a S&T as a 3 years/1 guaranteed contract, though that’s rather far out.

Well if that's the case he may want it.

There’s enough to get a S&T. This isn’t the end of the world. If you’re going to have cap space, 2010 is the time to have it. Especially if you have a talented young roster that is missing a superstar PF.

I don’t see why you would turn down extra cap space to get Jeffries, Hill, and a pick that could either be really(they dont sign any big names), or really bad(they get LBJ and whoever else). Also, ya’ll do feel like you could have a shot at Bosh, you wouldnt to have any part of helping the knicks get far enough under the cap to sign two max’s. Just my outsiders, uninformed opinion…

So yeah, persuade me

On the one hand, we don’t get any bad contracts, get rid of McGrady once and for all…… on the other hand, Martin is from my perspective pretty injury-prone, and we just wasted the last four years with one injury-prone star, and Landry was a badass.
So I’m not quite certain about this. Still, you guys already were my second team, and with Carl Landry, you guys definitely are.

Well

not going to convince you. I just think Martin is an offensive player that when used right can be downright offensive to other teams defense. Plus, the Rockets have the players and concepts to help Martin defensively in ways the Kings could not with regards to Martin.

Kevin’s injurys are a problem, but I think the bigger problem was fit. For whatever reason, the marriage didn’t work any longer. It was a time for a change. The Rockets facilitated that. I’m confident this deal will end up working for both sides in the long run.

WHY would the Kings trade T-Mac’s monster expiring deal, for bad contracts and a so-so prospect and draft picks that stand a chance at not being all that great once NY signs big stars because they got T-Mac’s expiring deal?

Not when you can save 5 million in cash expenses for the Maloof’s while you’re at it. There is a lot of bottom line in this deal plus a basketball deal (Landry) mixed in. I like it in a lot of ways. Unfortunately it included SpeedRacer which saddens me. But, so it goes.

I think it was a carry-over from the Hou-NY rumors.

And they just transfered over. I think this was a far preferable deal from Houston’s POV. I don’t blame them either; it makes sense for them in every angle. Like Kings fans are emotional about Kevin Martin, Rockets fans are emotional about Carl Landry. It doesn’t mean that Kevin Martin can’t help them into the playoffs this year. He’s a great fit with Yao Ming too I think.

Hughes expires this year, Jeffries expires next year, so T-Mac for Hill, a pick and a chance to swap picks for a one year rental of Jeffires(a valuable expiring heading into the lock-out). Seems like a decent deal to me.

This team has been saving a lot of money for over a year. If you don’t spend it on players you won’t get people in the door. Seems to me, the more cap space the Knicks get, the less valuable their 1st round picks become. Especially when it’s swapping, and not just “having”.

I know the NY and ESPN media types think everyone should bend over backwards to give the Knicks 50 million in cap space, but I hope the Kings don’t agree.

Hidey ho mort

I am with you. I don’t see what allowing New York into the trade does for Sacramento. It seems to me like the Kings hold all the cards, they have the player that houston desires…

I think the Maloof's will care more about the monetary savings rather than a low draft pick. There's just so little available there for the Kings in that particular scenario. Especially since Jordan Hill is the sweetner.

I think Kevin's defense

was infectiously bad and poor model of stopping dribble drive penetration at the point of attack for Reke. Like Simmon said, Martin was a luxury that they can’t afford. They actually scored less without him. I’m not sure we want cap space, its not like everyone is dying to play in Sac (Reke seems to be the only draw.)

Ron Rivera for Cal Head Coach. I'm a one man movement!

I'm really bummed that Martin's gone, since he's my favorite player.

I think Landry will be a good pickup, but I’m just not sure if they got enough value in return. Kevin is one of the most talented scorers I’ve ever seen, and Landry, while a good offensive presence, doesn’t seem to be much of a plus on defense. I’m sure he’ll end up being a fan favorite, and I’m pretty sure that he’ll fit in with JT. I just can’t quite wrap my head around the T-Mac situation. I don’t see the Kings having much of a shot in the free agent sweepstakes, but then I don’t want them to take on any stupid contracts (which is really the only way to get anything back for McGrady).

It all depends on what happens in the next few hours. As of now, I’m okay with it, even though I don’t like it, because it’s clear to me that the Kings can use more help on the front line more than they can effectively use Martin (they didn’t seem to be willing to draw plays up for him).

I wish it would have worked. Now that I see it wasn't going to, or the personalities involved would have meant shipping others out

I can live with the result. The Kings made a decision that it wouldn’t work. Long term it shouldn’t matter. Short term, we’ll see what happens.

Anytime Ben says something negative about Sergio, I tend to discount it...

He loved piling on that guy. Unless it was locker room stuff, I don’t see how they could be that upset about moving down 6 picks in the draft and getting $$$ as well. I dont think there is anyway Sergio has been that bad. Maybe it cost them a chance at Blair and thats why they’re pissed? I dunno….

#52

by Mortimer on Feb 18, 2010 6:03 AM PST up reply actions

If what Ben said is true about the 2nd round pick and Sergio

It’s only because they wanted DeJuan Blair. And, who knows what that means. Ben has also told me that Geoff Petrie could be on the way due to his sources. Which I already knew and knew it was possible given that Petrie had turned down extensions. Ben’s awesome at what he does, but he doesn’t know more about the Kings or the dynamic of this franchise than I do or TZ or Amick for that matter. Which is not to say Ben doesn’t know a shitton about the Blazers & the L. He definitely does.

Motivation to Flip TMAC

If the Kings can’t get David Lee, I don’t see why they would do a deal with the Knicks.

The only thing that could bridge the gap would be draft picks, but the Knicks were balking when Houston was asking for them to be unprotected, which the Kings would also want.
