THOUGHTS ON THE TRADE
This is a terrible trade. We are giving up one of ur best players in K-Mart and getting very little talent in exchange. Carl Landry is a nice player but hes not a potential superstar like Martin is. If we would have gotten David Lee in the trade then its worth it. Lee is a beast.
Houston completly won this trade. They got Martin, Jordan Hill who was the 8th overall pick this year, jared Jeffries who is a monster defensivly. And all they gave up was Landry. T-mac has played mayb 10 games the rockets didnt even have him on there team. They are playing without him anyway.
Oh, and Larry Hughes sucks.
Overall I think this trade doesnt help out the Kings at all except in cap room next year but lets be realistic no big name player is going to play in Sacramento. Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Amare none of these guys are going to play here. They are going to go to the big markets like NY or Miami. I hope I am wrong.
Let me know what you think.

um, how can i put this politely...
you are wrong. first, what potential is there left in K-mart? you know what you get with k-mart. a solid scorer, bad defender and was starting to become a whiny, pouting cancer.
let’s look at what the kings got:
landry, currently scoring 16+ a game, rebounding 6ish a game and shooting 54% and (0% from 3pt range). that last two stats tells me he plays down low. admittedly i don’t know much about him, but from what i hear he is a solid defender and if the shooting percentages are correct, then he spends time down low. something this team needs.
larry hughes, if you think the kings want hughes, then let me point you to a bid orange-ish bridge in san francisco that is for sale. hughes is in the final year of his contract and that gives the kings $13 million coming off for salary space. landry is owed the remainder of his $3 million for this year and the team has an option to pick him up for next year for another $3 million (which with by the way he is playing, is a steal).
the kings also have k-9 (woof) coming off the books, which is another $9million
between the two, that is $22 million.
dorsey was a throw in.
in my opinion, petrie is collecting solid young talent and is seeing who wants to rise to the top and be solid players around tyreke, who i believe we all think will be the superstar cornerstone of this team. plus with their current record, the kings should get another nice lottery pick. and will have space under the cap for the next couple of years to fill gaps.
so explain to me again how this is a bad trade?

I agree with all of this.
People are completely overreacting, overvaluing Martin, under-appreciating Landry, and underestimating the cap space.
NY is a great city, but in order to get a top free agent, they need to get TWO top free agents. LeBron is not likely to go anywhere. That leaves Bosh, Amar’e, and D-Wade. To a lesser extent, Joe Johnson and Rudy Gay. They cannot really have Amar’e and Bosh on the same team, because they need one of those star guards in NY. They’ll have to let David Lee walk in order to sign two max FA’s. They have given away their draft picks for the next three years, basically.
So, if you’re Bosh, do you go to the Knicks (who have sucked for an eternity), or do you go to the Kings, where you have an all-star in Evans, a great young core, Landry, a top-six draft pick, and you will be the mother-fucking MAN!?!
It will not be as hard as you all think to get a top talent here. And if it doesn’t happen, then it will sting a bit, but there is always the next summer.
Lastly, none of us know what was going on behind the scenes. It has been reported (and makes sense) that Martin was not adjusting well to the team and HE is the one that really was ready to move on. His comments on the trade would seem to back this up.
So, we traded an oft-injured, super-efficient, lovable SG, who was no longer invested in the team for the sixth man of the year (who happens to be an efficient low post guy…which we needed) and the chance to sign Bosh.
I’ll take it. Obviously, if the market would demand more for Martin, GP would’ve gotten it.

I was happy until I realized Landry is only one year younger then Martin,
And averages 5 and a half rebounds a game. And we didn’t even get draft picks or get rid of Noc?? I hate this deal.

first, great signature....that chris rock reference is hilarious
secondly, trades generally have to make sense for both teams. and there has to be some sacrifices. noc can still be dealt at some point. obviously not this year. but his contract isn’t that bad. patience grasshopper, petrie is a pretty good GM. let him work his magic.

I understand that, but right now, Kevin Martin is a much better player then Carl Landry
If Landry fitted a need, maybe you do it. But we need interior defense. We have big men who can’t play defense. I understand he is tough, but when you say “his only negatives are rebounding and defense” about a big man……I mean…Isn’t that two thirds of what being a big man is all about? People on this site were 50/50 on if they would even do a Martin for Al Jefferson swap. Landry is older, a much worse rebounder, and and an equally bad defender then AlJeff and people are excited over this? I just don’t understand it. If we couldn’t’ve gotten more for Martin then why not just hold onto him…

People on this site overvalue Kevin Martin
myself included. If Kevin wasn’t happy here and didn’t feel like he was fitting in, then I think getting Landry and the chance to go after Bosh is not bad.

YES THEY DO.
There will be a SammyP wherever you go. But don't worry, it scared me at first too.
Kevin Martin is not a better player than Landry right now
by almost any statistical measure.
What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.
Ok, maybe statistically, looking at this season, Landry is better
But Martin is still at best a 20-25 point a game scorer. And Landry is still a big man who doesn’t play good defense or rebound well. I understand K-Mart is not a good defender either, but a bad defensive big man is a lot harder to mask then a bad defensive guard. I’m not trying to dismiss Landry, and I’m definitely not saying Martin is a “superstar,” I just think we could’ve gotten something better for Martin, and in general Martin is a much more valuable player with better trade value. (Again, I am saying in general, maybe right now their trade values are equal, but this is a sell low on Martin, in my opinion.)

Landry is still a big man who doesn’t play good defense or rebound well
You dont really know much about Landry. Playing good, tough defense and offensive/defensive rebounding are his greatest strengths. He is a slightly bigger, down-in-the-block version of Cisco.
I just think we could’ve gotten something better for Martin, and in general Martin is a much more valuable player with better trade value.
I understand what you’re sayin’, but Martin just came off of an injury and he holds the team (as a whole) back from becoming a defensive-minded team due to his weaknesses there. His value to US decreased this year, while his value to others also decreased due to his injury. BUT, this is also why we had a team that wanted to “buy low” on KMart. We got a very good player, an expiring contract, and another guy I dont know anything about. But we also got rid of a big weakness on a very important aspect of our team, on the ball defending. I will miss Martin too, but he no longer served the purpose he was best at, which was scoring. We have other guys now who can do that as a committee for us.

Uhm
You might want to check the stats – Landry’s not a good rebounder, and his defense is poor. However, his ability to score down low is exceptional.
He’s really Kevin Martin in the low post, but with less questions on his motor/leadership.

I know what the stats are...
Watch him play, he is a better defender than Martin, he is a better rebounder than Martin. Martin was athletic, but was soft. This team needs to be physical and Landry is better suited than Martin to play that style.

You do understand the difference
Between a backcourt and a frontcourt player right? Was Kevin supposed to provide frontcourt toughness and rebounding?
I like this trade, and I like Landry…however, let’s be factual about his abilities.

No, of course KMart wasnt supposed to play that way
because he cant. All I am sayin is that Landry fits in with the team’s philosophy and direction. Martin was fazed out, not by his lack of talent, but by the direction the team is going.
by NorCal BillsFan on Feb 18, 2010 1:19 PM PST up reply actions
Sure I agree with that
I’m just saying we shouldn’t expect Landry to bring the frontcourt defense and rebounding to respectability.

Watching the highlights
in the Landry Retrospective at Dream Shake makes me think twice about Landry not being inclined or able to defend and/or rebound. He’s taking charges and stuffing dunks. Is that who he is or just a couple aberrations?
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
He scores 10% of his points on dunks. That’s athleticism we haven’t had at the PF position since #4 patrolled Arco.
And he’s inclined to defend, he’s not a great defender though. He’s really skilled, which is why he scores well, but he’s not the ridiculous athlete that leads to exceptional defense. If he had Anthony Randolph’s athleticism and physical gifts, he’d have been a top 5 pick; that he was a 2nd round pick tells you he doesn’t measure out to NBA perfection.
What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.
I should clarify.
He wasn’t stuffing dunks as in dunking. He was blocking dunk attempts. This fits you comment which I think is highly significant. He is inclined to defend even though he may not be a great defender at this point.
What captured my attention in the highlights was that inclination to defend.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
The diff between Big Al and Landry
is salary (a very wide gulf between the two). If Landry was being paid Big Al money, there’s no way he’s a King right now.
Actually
right now Carl Landry is the better player. He’s outscoring Kevin on a per 48 minutes basis so far this season, and that includes Kevin’s hot streak before he got hurt.
Landry is also far more efficient, knocking down almost 55% of his FG attempts while Kevin has struggled, shooting under 40%. In fact, Landry has been playing at pretty close to All Star level so far in 2010, and obviously Kevin Martin hasn’t.
Now, if and when K-Mart gets his groove back he’s a tremendous offensive player, but (A) so far this season that hasn’t been the case, and (B) your statement about him being a “potential superstar” is the kind of hyperbole that says to me you don’t really have a balanced perspective on this situation, Big ZK
This is his 7th season in the NBA and what you see with Kevin Martin is what you get.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a lot of thrills watching him play, and he’s always seemed like a good guy. He could very well get back to All Star level, but an NBA superstar he ain’t, by any stretch of the imagination.
Landry has been winning over doubters at every level he’s competed. Why not watch him play a few games with the Kings before you sell him so short?
"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."
(Hunter Thompson)
I agree with the overall tone.
Not the point that Landry is the better player though. That he is not.

'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16
Sure, over the course of his career
Kevin is the better player up to this point, and he has skills of a potential All-Star.
On the other hand Landry also has a lot of talent and special qualities as a player that could help the Kings get where they wanna go.
Fans in Sacramento (including me) don’t really know Landry, which is part of the reason why a lot of comments are so negative. I get that, but when Big ZK starts talking about Kevin being “a potential superstar” (what? he’s going to blossom into Kobe Bryant in his eighth season?) it’s time to bring a dose of reality to the thread.
The hysteria isn’t warranted and this trade could work out really well for the Kings.

I mixed up your comment with AviG.
I do think you’re overvaluing KMart somewhat as compared to Landry, but AviG is the one who’s went over the top with the “superstar” tag. Anyway, my mistake, and apologies for that.
Personally I’m pretty excited to see Landry suit up tomorrow vs the Clippers. He plays with a lot of energy and I have a feeling Kings fans will get behind the guy very soon.

wrong, wrong, wrong
Kmart a superstar? Not.
Landry is probably his equal in every respect, but tougher, still improving, cheaper, and explosive.
Doh?! The Kings are rebuilding. One of these player did NOT belong. Look at last night’s starters – Reke (20), Greene (21), Hawes (21) and Omri (21). With JT (23) their top bench player.
Hughes is an expiring contract – great! They dump $11MM/yr that’s totally wasted on 2nd tier, one-dimensional scorer (Kmart). Garcia/Udrih are fine at the 2 down the stretch. And then we have the draft.
GP doesn’t expect to go after LeBron, D-Wade, etc. The one player in that tier that would be perfect fit is Joe Johnson – and he’s actually worth $11MM+ per year. But that don’t matter – plug in Evan Thomas at the 2, or use a few pieces come draft day to pick up a new 2 (that can play D and hit 3’s) if we go BIG in the draft.
The team just got lots better, with lots more promise.
For a rebuilding team...
with lots more promise
This is crucial.

Sorry, Evan Turner (OSU)
Guy could be next year’s Tyreke Evans – 6’7" monster that’s played 4 positions in college, handles the rock and can’t be stopped getting to the rim and gobbling up boards. Just a pure baller. Also can’t shoot the 3, but that’s what Casspi and Greene can do from the wing. Just thinking about him and ’Reke in the same backcourt has me forgetting about Kmart already. Goodbye!
Agree
Evan Turner could slip right into K-Marts spot and barely miss a beat. Likely add a few beats too. Guy has serious game at 6’7" the way he can handle, pass, and score, and defend. He reminds me of combination Iggy and Brandon Roy. If we don’t luck out with John Wall, Turner would be nice consolation prize.
I agree Kevin needed to go & he is far from a superstar
but what he is is one of the best 2 gaurds in the west & we traded him for Luis Scola’s back-up. Nothing against Landry I believe he will be a fan favorite but we didn’t address any needs or dump Nocioni. Also Houston got over ON EVERYONE. It just seems too much like a HUGE favor for Rick Adelman & that pisses me off. Are we now an NBA farm team?
I love beating dead horses.
he is one of the best 2 guards in the west...
that happens to not fit what the kings are doing. petrie and westphal have system they are trying to implement, and k-mart doesn’t fit. that isn’t to say landry does, but his contract allows flexibility to get players that may fit, if landry doesn’t.

So give him away?
I think GP messed up in not listening to trade offers, then trying to do something at the last minute. That’s why the Rox got over. I would have rather traded KM & Noce for Ray Allen & a late first rounder atleast we got rid of Noce that way. You don’t think there was a better deal out there to be made? Why not wait til the offseason? I’m not overvaluing KM. I’m not saying we should have traded KM for Bosh. All I’m saying is how the F did we dump KM without dumping Noce. Sorry Chapu Noce is fine but he no longer has a place on this team. If he gets buried behind Donte, Casspi, & Cisco I will have to watch him sit there in a suit for the next 3 years.
I love beating dead horses.
Exactly what I was thinking
Especially on the part about saying over and over he would not trading him, then changing his mind at the last minute. I absolutely think we should’ve gotten rid of Noc (a product of another Petrie trade, he shouldve never been on the team in the first place). The Rockets just got one of the most lopsided deals I can remember: Martin, Hill, and 2 first rounders for Tmac’s expiring and Landry? Wow.
"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more?"

Yeah & those picks are 2011 swap #1 protected & 2012 top 5 protected WOW!
I love beating dead horses.
You have it wrong
The Rockets got Martin for Landry and were able to get the picks and Hill because of the money they were willing to spend on Jeffries’ contract next year.
And I’d much, much rather have Landry than merely getting rid of Nocioni’s contract. Losing Kevin Martin just to make $13mil of Noc go away over two years, that would have been a terrible trade.
You guys, please watch Landry play for a month; then I want to hear your opinions again.
What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.
There's a lot of Landry ignorance at this point
And I think it’s because that entire Houston team is kind of low key and off the radar (especially without Yao and McGrady playing recently).
Landry’s a damn good player, and there’s a very good chance one of his weaknesses (defensive rebounding) will improve now that he’s not surrounded by so many good rebounders.
Tomorrow night can’t come soon enough – I’m ready to see how he and Reke work together and how Cisco and Reke work together.

I know that Landry is a solid player, its not like I just heard about him yesterday.
But Houston traded one rotation player and $7 mil (the equivalent of Jeffries contract) for Martin (who I will continue to argue is a higher caliber player then Landry), the 8th pick in last years draft, draft picks the next two years and a second round pick this year and you don’t think they made out like bandits??

How the F did we not trade Noce while trading away KMart?
Simple. KMart is a good player. Noce, in the last 2 months, has been really bad. Ergo a lot of teams wanted KMart and no one wanted Noce.
IMHO, I think GP tried his damndest to trade Noce away. Maybe even with KMart as the incentive (or maybe with K9) Just because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean they didn’t try.
There can only be one Noce!
Historically, maybe
But lately he has been a shadow of himself offensively. Maybe he can regain his mojo with a change of scenery, but the Kings also needed to make the change. Hopefully it’s a win-win situation.

Well done to you both.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
I love the deal.
Kevin was a GREAT player when he was ‘right’, it is just that he wasn’t ‘right’ nearly often enough.
The guy was one-dimensional and seemingly fragile – this does not mean that I didn’t like him. I did. A lot.
The issue is that when Martin wasn’t scoring at an incredible clip, he was a liability. I predicted that we would keep Garcia and trade Martin earlier this year for the simple fact that Petrie likes versatility. Garcia can play/guard three positions and is cheaper than Martin. Plus Martin has what I perceive to be inflated value as a bargaining chip.
Enter Landry. Aside from shot-blocking he is EXACTLY what we need. He will be playing more minutes than either Hawes or Thompson. He is great because he doesn’t demand touches. He is the Kevin Martin of interior offense without the fragility. He’s as tough as nails. He’s also younger than Martin. We went big for little, and young for old. This is usually a pretty good combination.
We will probably WIN a couple more games because of this trade, not lose a couple more. I also thing that the salary cap load diminishing for next year is fantastic. We won’t land one of the top 4 probably, but we will be serious players. This was a very good deal.
(In addition, I actually thing that Dorsey sticks.)

My brother - I too love this deal
Couldn’t have said it better. What GP and Westphal want are tough, flexible players with upside … guys who are HARD to play against. That’s been the Kings biggest weakness for 5 years. Guys & style of play that’s been way too soft.
Kmart was paper tissue soft and totally one dimensional. Kings fans will LOVE Landry, and tough guys make their team-mates play tougher too. Landry & Brock will hopefully rub off on Hawes & JT, while Greene and Omri already play with an edge.
The 2-spot is the easiest hole to fill on any NBA roster …. Reke, Udrih and Cisco can play it today, and who knows what the draft will bring. Kings might luck out and get Wall or E Turner … then it’s lights out. A team that’s young, tough & talented. WITH CAP SPACE !!
Houston is going nowhere w/ A Brooks & Kmart in their backcourt. N-O-W-H-E-R-E
Yep
I love the toughness. If we’re getting beat up, time to throw out Brockman/Dorsey/Landry/Casspi/Evans.

I like the trade also
but the issue with Martin seems to be the coaching staff didn’t want to run the stuff that helps him be effective, and too many young guys still learning the NBA.
He’s going to be a lot better playing for the Rockets, so I think there’s a potential for it being a win-win deal. I’m honestly happy for Kevin, this move will be good for him.
What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.
If you like David Lee
You should love Landry – who has the same rebounding, is actually a slight bit tougher because he’s got a little controlled Artest, and he has more offense – he was Rockets closer. Rockets fans adored him.

I think Lee's a much better rebounder
Here’s his career numbers:
ORB% – 10.6%
DRB% – 26.1%
Total RB% – 18.2%
And here’s Landry’s:
ORB – 11.0%
DRB% – 15.7%
Total RB% – 13.4%
That’s a pretty large difference. I’d much rather have Landry’s offense though.

I don't know about that...
Lee has become a great passer this season, he is really the point forward for the Knicks. Landry has the better post game Lee is no slouch there. Both very efficient. Lee can hit a jumper, not sure if Landry can to be honest.

Comparing Landry to Lee rebounding-wise?
Are you serious? Lee is one of the three or four best rebounders in the league. Landry averages Five and a half a game. Come on.
"You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more?"
-Chris Rock
Landry is not a good overall rebounder but is good on th offensive glass...
Landry has flourished in a 6th man role. I say we keep him at 30 min and let Hawes and JT still start.
JT and Hawes are still young and need to get warmed up like many starters to get into the flow of the game. Landry is a mentally tough player and knows how to get in there and contribute right away.
I say we let Westphal make the decision...
but that’s just me realizing I’m not an NBA head coach.
Also, JT has been playing well off the bench lately.

boondammit avi
this was a good trade. you can officially call the “magical/godlike” backcourt of reke and martin a pipe dream, IT WAS GOING NOWHERE.
lets think of the last situation where we traded away a disgruntled, injury prone veteran star. c-webb! he went on to be a decent player but he dropped fast. and before that, mitch ritchmond! traded away for the dominating finesse bruiser(oxymoron?) chris webber. both in the long term were smart trades. dont underestimate gpetries foresight.
A damn good trade
the Kings got a consistent scorer downlow. Landry is not that bad of a rebounder and defender either. For his career he averaged 8 rebounds per 36. I think he just had a decrease, will go up. He is an excellent scorer downlow. Also he averages a block per 36. He is tough too.
There were not enough minutes to go around. The Kings are more free and flexible with Kevin gone. He has not won them many games this year. The Kings won’t really be much worse with him gone, probably better. They get more consistent and better defensively.
GP on the down low
Just because GP didn’t broadcast his intentions, don’t think that he wasn’t planning to dump Kmart for all the obvious reasons …. and Landry is probably better fit, at lower cost, with less risk, than Tyrus Thomas. Dude plays hard and scores like mad (55% FG, 80% FT) – only downside is that he doesn’t block shots or Reb crazy well, but ….
Also, D Lee has $10MM salary and will be FA in June. Landry – $3MM. Nice.
Fuck
why the fuck do the rockets get all the fucking assets? ridiculous. We gave up K-Mart and the much better package to the Rockets, and then we find out on top of that Houston got EVERYTHING good from the Knicks, for the player we were supposed to have fucking acquired by the horrible Martin trade, McGrady. Houston fucking RAPED on this deal. Adelman fucked us in the ass. Horrible.
Landry is a great piece, but for everything we have up, he is not enough. If we are the ones who traded for McGrady, the assets from the Knicks trade should have come OUR way. OUR way. How does Houston supposedly trade T-Mac to use in the Martin trade, and then get every asset from our trading for McGrandy AND us trading McGrady to the Knicks. We get a fucking negartive, Larry Hughes. GARBAGE.
Landry
He is an efficient scorer and rebounder but he is not a good defender, per Houston fans.
The Draft Picks
That is what we should have been after. Cap room does us less good than any other team in the league, because free agents don’t want to come here to get the small market treatment from the league.
CBA
league will change big-time over the next 2 years in terms of salary cap/structure – there might be a hard cap and only the A+ players (LeBron, Kobe, Durant, Wade, etc.) will earn $10MM+ … which will make it easier for Kings to keep their own, and they can always acquire by trade, like they did with CWeb & Artest. And once they’re winning & nobody’s overpaying, they’ll be more attractive to FA’s.
It has been more than a day since the trade
In that period of time there have been numerous posts about the trade, Kevin Martin, Landry, etc. People have been all over the map in terms of their emotions about Martin leaving. There has been new information suggesting that Martin, himself, may have been instrumental in the trade, Petrie gave a candid interview, I can go on and on…
This dissection of the trade may go on for some time as new information surfaces. For me, at this point in time, with the information that I have been trying to digest over the last 24 hours or so, this was a good trade. It doesn’t matter if Kevin is or has the “potential” to be better than Landry. Right now, Kevin Martin wasn’t cutting it here in Sacramento. Period. If anything, I think Petrie made a smart move to stop a potential problem from compounding itself throughout the rest of the season. We are getting a consistent player with Landry, and we are getting rid of a player who no longer wanted to be part of the Kings franchise or team. If Kevin wasn’t a cancer in the locker room, he most likely would have been. Petrie excised that cancer and sent it in a Petrie dish to Houston. The X-Ray shows we are now cancer-free. I have done a 180 degree turn, from mourning for the loss of Kevin to being relieved that he is gone. Landry is going to provide us the consistency we so desperately need. I believe this is going to prove to be a very good trade in the short- and long-term.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
