Post-Trade Deadline Thread

It's now 12:00 PM and the Deadline is passed. Big deadline for Kings fans.  More news might come out in the next few hours but for now, all we know is that Kevin Martin/Sergio/Armstrong for Landry/Dorsey/Hughes is official.

Kevin Martin says goodbye on Sports 1140 KHTK today at noon on the Jim Kozimor show. If you want to listen, tune into 1140 AM or if you want to listen online, this link should work.

UPDATE (12:48 PM):

Per Sam Amick: Kings to acquire Washington's Dominic McGuire and cash for a future second round pick, a source close to the Wiz tells me.

I have a bunch if thoughts. Where to start...

*By Kevins “It was time” “now the young guys can grow” tells me he wanted out.

*If the Rockets were willing to take on Jefferies I wonder if Geoff tried to cut out the Knicks and offered Nocionis/Benos contract? If he didn’t i’d be disappointed.

*This was a trade with the future in mind. 4th most cap space, another top pick, and an attractive young nucleus. The Kings are in a good position.

*Earlier I wondered if getting Landry was going to make JT available in another trade for say Amare or Boozer. Looks like that wasn’t the case.

*I’m sad to see him go but I’m glad Kevins going to a good team. I wish nothing but success for K-Mart!

by StevenG on Feb 18, 2010 12:13 PM PST via mobile reply actions

This is it in a nutshell
This was a trade with the future in mind. 4th most cap space, another top pick, and an attractive young nucleus. The Kings are in a good position.

Bring on the future! Lots to look forward to: how the young Kings jell for the rest of this season, the draft and the offseason trades/signing prospects. It will be interesting to see what this team looks like at the beginning of next season.

But it was also looking at the here and now – the rest of this season. We now have something to look forward to this season. Gets rid of the drama, which has been saturating the team.

Not when he's not a particularly good rebounder.

PER weighs rebounding heavily. So when a forward has a high PER without being a good rebounder, that tells you he’s pretty damn good at scoring efficiently.

Just FYI on the McGuire for 2nd trade

It could be a conditional 2nd rounder that never ends up changing hands like with last years deal we did with Boston. Washington may want slightly more breathing room under the luxury tax, so they deal him and some cash to make sure they save even more cash. Kings do it for the cash, they probably have no interest in McGuire as a player.

THat’s my best list. I put all the main free agents worth spending big money on for most of those teams. There’s maybe a handful I’d be interested in. So it is official everybody

We are FUCKED! Totally screwed. We just lost our #1 trading chip of a player and got back another stretch 4.

I mean, how many god damn stretch 4s do we need. Furthermore, we have true PFs at 4 and now we won’t have the low post defensive C that we REALLY need.

The only way this deal worked for us was to fill a hole in our roster and IT DOESN’T DO THAT!

We just lost our best player. We just gave him away. We should have at least got David Lee out of this deal or at least some serious picks in the upcoming (BIG heavy) draft, but no… WTF, I mean seriously?

The Kings are sacrificing any and all pieces to save money. They seem to have no interest in winning games at all.

Petrie, you really blew this so bad!

First off, your info on Landry is way wrong. He’s not anywhere near being a stretch 4. He’s a very efficient scorer, inside to mid-range. Kings haven’t had this efficient of a scoring big in a while.

Think about all the trade offers that were rumored

Would you rather have had Hedo? Jose Calderon? Josh Howard? Even the good guys that were rumored, Iggy and Okafor, are locked for a long time.

This gives us a young PF who scores almost as well as Al Jefferson for a quarter of the price and a shot at a top flight Free Agent, possibly Bosh, next year.

Ultimately,

we still don’t have a starting backcourt. And our starting frontcourt or frontcourt in general leaves something to be desired. Ironically the only legit starters on our team are our two first round rookies. Tyreke is obviously a legit starter and to everyone’s surprise, Casspi is a legit starting Small already. I meen as a starter the guy is avg. 15 and 6. And he’s only going to get better. I still believe both JT and Spence Will be legit starters by the end of next year. Yes, we can agree on that.

Martin would be a perfect fit on a contender. He is just being wasted on our team which has many things that need fixing, but tons of potential. It kills me when people blame Martin for not being a better defender. We are one of the very worst defensive teams in the league, with or without Kevin. Let him go try his prime years in a more developed situation. We’ll see our roster at training camp next season and then we will know how good or bad this trade was. Landry does give us a little more scoring in the frontcourt. That should help Tyreke a little. We’ll see.

I have looked at the numbers

The other teams bigs hurt us real bad. Sure some of it is off guard penetration, but a lot is bad D by our bigs.

by MustangMBS on Feb 18, 2010 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, other teams bigs are better

But, you failure to accept that most of the scoring from the other teams bigs is benefited by penetration in the paint from our poor perimiter defense, must be due to your fixation with boxscores.

So, here’s a box score for you. In the last 20 game (the most time I was willing to waste on your education) the opposing team scored an average of 32.5 ppg at the rim. The same teams scored an average of 33.7 ppg on long range 2’s and 3 pt shots.

The Kings need defensive help everywhere. Better exterior defense would lower scoring on the long range jumpers, and in the paint by limiting penetration. A low post defender is only going to lower scoring at the basket. And, low post shoot blockers who can play good man defense in the paint are next to impossible to acquire.

So, the quickest way to improve the overall team defense in not going to be finding some unkown unacquireable interior defensive stopper, so we might as well concentration on the exterior defense

A PF whose upside is 20/7 and perhaps mediocre defense, and that isn’t low value? What we got

Is a low-post offensive threat who is quite likely a better player right now than Kevin Martin, and at a much lower salary. It gives the team the ability to be players in the free agent market in the offseason.

Whether you like it or not, that is fair value…again, whether it turns out to be a good trade remains to be seen.

The devil is in the details

1) Landry is arguably a better player than Kevin Martin right now.
2) Whether we agree or disagree on a big name free agent coming to Sacramento, this trade appears to put them in position to at least be in the bidding.
3) Landry is, by all accounts, a very good clubhouse guy and a hardworker, and is a year younger than Kevin.

It’s going to be hard to fully evaluate this deal until we see the roster at the start of the 2010-2011 season, but I like it overall.

Has Bosh ever stated what he wants?

I assume he wants out of Canada, also that he wants to win a championship…(DUH) …..but has he given any clues as to who he wants to play with/where he wants to play? Is he even willing to consider joining a building team like ours, or does he want to “win now” with Wade or Lebron?

by angry gus on Feb 18, 2010 1:39 PM PST reply actions

Bosh stated at All Star Weekend that he feels he's a number 1 guy

he might not want to be a sidekick to Lebron or Wade. If he came here, Tyreke would be his sidekick. So he’d have the star next to him, plus a lot of other talent, and he’d be the man

let's hope this is true....

if things work out…this could be a nice kobe/shaq type thing.

Shaq was the better player when the partnership started and kobe towrads the end.

Evan’s seems like a humble kid…not a punk like kobe.

Actually

looking back at it, it seems that maybe Shaq was the problem. He’s left every team he’s been on on bad terms. He even stole the idea for Shaq Vs. from Nash. He’s been out of shape for years and has just finally started to accept his role.

He has never implied he wants out of Canada

Everyone just assumes that because that’s what they want. There’s a few articles about how much he likes it there and even spends his off season there.

I do think he just wants to be on a better team though

Which the Raptors aren’t doing a good job of building around him.

Yeah, it's assumed

That all big name players want to leave Canada due to exchange rate issues, living outside the U.S. etc. But damn, I’ve been to Toronto a few times – I’d live there in a heartbeat. It’s not exactly Memphis North.

I could see a guy like Bosh staying if he felt they had the potential to be a contender in the long term.

Yes

I remember a particularly good article on how Bosh truly enjoys Toronto. I like this quote from Bosh:

“It’s funny you say that, because I was thinking about it. I was just looking at what people say and it’s like, ‘Chris is going to go here and play with him or this, this and that.’ I’m like, ‘Wait a minute.’ I feel like I should be built around. And maybe that’s just my ego talking, but I feel that I’m a very good player in this league and I’m only going to get better. So … maybe we should be getting somebody [in Toronto]."

Great pick-up for you guys. He isn’t the best player in the world. Doesnt have a good jumpshot. Doesn’t have great ballhandling skills.

But he plays defense, crashes the boards, and he’s one of the most unselfish players in the league. Just an all-around hustle guy that you’re going to fall in love with.

I'm not going to lie

He’s offensively challenged when it comes to creating his own shots, but he’s efficient when he lets the points come to him instead. Mcguire is the guy you play to set up a presence around the boards, or if you just need to guard somebody one on one, which he’s efficient at doing.

Mustang I know you have great Kings passion but you do know the NBA is a business, right?

what is wrong with saving money? There are no standings changers available at the moment but the Kings are positioned to acquire one. If not, they save money and it makes staying in Sacramento better for the owners. They have lowered ticket prices.

Really, it is ok to have money on the books

Yes, I am just questioning the precedence and priority

You can build a team and still save money, but when it looks like the priority is to save money at the expense of building a team that is something that a fan should, IMHO, be concerned about.

I like Landry OK, but

He’s a little undersized but that’s not a big deal. He’s super old for only being in his third year. He’ll be 27 before the start of next season. Granted he’s just entered his prime, but as his minutes have gone up his first three seasons, his rebounds have stayed the same. That means, as he becomes more of a scoring asset, his overall defensive effort decreases. Not to mention, by the time JT is Landry’s age, JT will be a much better player than Landry is right now. Landry could blow up for 20ppg next season, but it doesn’t look like his boards will ever go above seven. While we get a nice cheap front court asset to help during JT and Spence’s development, we didn’t get the back-up defensive rebounder, many of us hoped for. And when will the revolving door at the 2guard stop. All that said, I’m patient and look forward to seeing what roster shows up for camp next season. After all we did free up a little money. Maybe we can still trade Beno and Noc in the off season etc. etc.

So, back to Bosh....

It seems we have the cash to get him, now how do we make this happen?
what does Kings/G.P./Maloofs have to do?
My guess is build the new arena, but is that going to happen in this shitty economy?
And would that even be enough?

by angry gus on Feb 18, 2010 2:21 PM PST reply actions

Well...

They could build a new arena overnight, give out free tickets so the place is packed, create a time machine to go back and win a few titles, and helicopter lift the city to a warm-water large city, like say San Diego. That should help.

Miami, NYK, and Chicago can all offer max contracts. The Knicks and Heat have 2. Bosh is not coming to Sacramento.

by Cyg on Feb 18, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

The ONLY way we land Bosh....

…is if

1) He truly turns his back on Toronto
2) Is even just OKAY with Sacramento
3) We trump all other SnT offers to Toronto(meaning Thompson/Landry, some picks, perhaps Greene/Casspi and basically all our cap space gone as a TPE to Toronto.

Could it happen. Yeah, sure, maybe. Will it? NOPE

Petrie

When I woke up this morning and saw that we had gotten Landry and TMAC I thought Petrie had the potential to hit a HR! I love Landry, but since TMAC had the $22 mill coming off the books I really thought we would be able to get a 1st round pick, or my pipe dream of TMAC for Iggy and Dalambert. Though I don’t like dalembert too much, he would be a big expiring contract next year for a playoff team looking for interior D. It seems like we let TMAC go for nothing though. I would have done KMART for Landry straight up, if the salaries would have matched. KMART and K9 though for Landry and TMAC would have been great, if we could have traded TMAC for something besides LARRY H.
