Xiane from the Dreamshake here. I thought you guys might appreciate a Rocket fan's view on Carl Landry.
First, he's one of my all time favorite Rockets. It hurts to lose Landry. He's a guy that came out of nowhere, a 2nd rounder, and has simply blown away expectations. He's a hard worker, and a great person. He's now one of the most efficient inside scorers in the game. People say he's undersized, but I've yet to see him really get worked over by another PF. Here's the thing - he's strong and quick, together. In general, if a defender is big enough to hold him, he's too fast. If a defender is quick enough to hold him, he's too strong. He's pure poison for defenses. There are maybe 3-4 guys who can really guard him.
His game has grown amazingly. He's gone from an energy guy to a PF without any visible flaws. He's got the hops to throw down anything for a dunk, but he's added a soft mid-range jumper, and a whole bucket of moves in the post. Honestly, when I watch him operate these days I'm frankly surprised when he misses. Fouling him is not an option since he shoots 85%-90% from the line.
His defensive rebounding isn't stellar, but he's spent a lot of time with guys who clean the defensive glass really well (Scola, for example) but he's a GREAT offensive rebounder, either gleaning misses and scoring, or tapping the ball out. He was out on the court less than a week after being shot, SHOT, in the leg. While Dirk Nowitski whinged around on the ground about his poor wittle elbow, Landry walked calmly to the bench, his mouth full of his own teeth. I'm just thrilled to get Martin. Thrilled. He's back with Adelman, and is part of a 2011 lineup that's going to hard to stop, to put it mildly. With Brooks, Martin, Ariza, Scola, Yao defenses will have a problem. When Ariza goes from being your 2nd-3rd option to your 4th-5th, it's all good. Martin is the guy I've wanted to get all year, but never thought we could.
