The future at SG

We now have a large void at a true quality SG (assuming Tyreke is NaPG). I started thinking about who would be a perfect complimentary player w/ Tyreke since obviously upper management and the coach felt Martin was not that guy. What about Stephan Curry???...he can obviously shoot the lights out, play without the ball, come off screens, and do pretty much everything else.

Obviously, there's no way GS is letting go of him, but if Tyreke is NaPG then it is going to be tough to pair someone nicely with him in the backcourt as a PG since he does need the ball in his hands to be effective. You would basically need another combo guard. For example, I don't believe Wall and Tyreke would work together at all...it's difficult to find many PGs that would mesh well w/ him at SG. Beno could be a great short term fit because he can play point but also shoot.

For this reason, I think you stick w/ Tyreke @ PG and find a spot up shooter (ala young Ray Allen) that doesn't also live and die by the drive, or need to drive to the hoop as a necessity of their game (like Martin). We eventually will need a classic, back to basics SG to pair with him....someone who can catch and shoot, or catch make a move and shoot. I really like Avery Bradley, the freshman of Texas and he might be a viable option in the draft if he comes out depending on where we're at.

Apologize for a bit of scrambling w/ the thoughts...if only Mitch Richmond were back in his prime. That would be some combo.

What do you guys think?

I'm sorry

but Ray Allen is the worst option for the Kings to spend money on. If you go after a 2 guard in free agency, try Joe Johnson.

by White Brocklate on Feb 19, 2010 8:42 PM PST reply actions

I didn't imply they should go after Ray Allen

I simply said that I felt like a “young Ray Allen-type” would be a good fit. I would not want Joe Johnson either as the depth at SG in FA is weak and he will command more money than he’s worth.

I don’t necessarily think we need an all-star caliber player at SG, just a guy that can pick and pop and play some D.

seriously

someone said this before that once martin is gone that we will be talking about how we wish we had a player with his exact skill set. I would give our 1st round pick any of your young guys to get Curry, I love his NBA game.

Curry would be great, but it won't happen.

So...

We should trade away picks and talent for a guy we just gave away. Thanks for making my point so eloquently.

by MustangMBS on Feb 20, 2010 12:53 AM PST reply actions

We didn't "give" him away, he was traded and we got something in return.

Evan Turner

Lets say the Kings get a high enough pick to grab Evan Turner from OSU. That would be perfect. Not a lot of money so that Kings can focus on other positions and in return also great young talent to grow with Evans for years to come.

Yea, I agree that'd be great.

2 combo guard backcourt is future of NBA IMO

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

Kevin traded -> Tyreke=NaPG no sarcasm...

Which means Tyreke is the SG…so the question is who will be the PG.
Avery Bradley is nice but I don’t think it’s a good fit…
Keep tabs on Abdul Gaddy for the future…
Would like to deal Beno and/or Noce for Nick Calathes…

Tyreke is going to be the guy with the ball in his hands the vast majority of the time

call that whatever position you want. The other guard needs to be able to shoot.

What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.

by Grasul on Feb 20, 2010 8:33 AM PST up reply actions

I will call it SG....

Kobe and Michael had the ball in their hands a lot as well, but nobody refers to them as PGs..
The other guard needs to do more than just shoot…if that was the case Kevin would still be here….that’s why a “PG” is needed.

by getPGwithbounce on Feb 20, 2010 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

thanks for making my point

Kobe and MJ’s PGs were Fisher and John Paxson mostly, and let’s see, why were they in the NBA? Yep, shooting. Kevin isn’t here for a lot of reasons which have nothing to do with the fact that having two guards that are bad shooters isn’t a normal recipe for success.

The guy to be paired with Tyreke needs to be able to shoot it.

What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.

Exactly my point

in 1 sentence, thanks dude.

Stephen Curry

is a perfect compliment to Tyreke Evans. Too bad he’s not and won’t be available for anything we’re willing to give up…..(CAP SPACE?) I’d take on Maggz’ deal to land Curry! lol.

by Smills9133 on Feb 20, 2010 9:58 AM PST reply actions

Only problem I have with Curry is that it'd squander our size mismatch opportunity

The great thing about our perceived Evans-Martin backcourt is that defending back courts had to pick their poisons. PGs couldn’t guard Reke or Martin 1vs1. With curry, you’re negating that opportunity to force mismatches every game.

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

I've always felt Jose Calderon would be a great fit with Reke

He is a great spot up shooter and extremely efficient, the guy never turns the ball over. And most of all he has a very flexible mindset and team-oriented personality. When TJ Ford was there, Calderon was the much better player, but he happily came off the bench for them because of Ford’s ego. Now he comes off the bench for Jarret Jack because the coach feels Jack is the better defender. Anyway, my point is the guy is flexible, and even though he may be perceived as a pure point guard who needs to bring the ball up court, I don’t doubt that he would be able to be a good, efficient spot up shooter, and we would have two guys who could handle the ball at all times. He could play the point when Reke was on the bench. Obviously he is not a great defender, but if Reke is guarding the other teams best guard it would be less of a problem.

The problem is his contract. It is around $8 mil a year for the next three years. But if Toronto loses Bosh they may try to clean house and trade him to us for Noc (Noc’s contract is one year less.) I know he will probably never end up on the team, but just a thought.

Agree completely

Two bad contracts has got to be the max (I don’t count Cisco). It will be interesting to see what they do if Toronto leaves. They would still have a few awful contracts (Calderon, Jack, Hedo). It will be interesting to see if they try to build around Bargnani (he is turning into a very very good player) or if they gut it and have a fire sale like Washington. If they do, we may be able to get a Noc for Calderon deal to go down, considering Nocs contract is a year less and goes down, while Calderons goes up. Even if they do keep trying to win we may be able to get a deal like this to happen, Jack is playing a lot more minutes at the moment. That’d be a nice little trade I would like to see happen.

A player with a little size to him that would cause match up problems for the other team. Able to shoot the 3 ball, move without the ball, spot up, while still being a threat to beat his guy off the dribble. Coachable and dedicated to improving.

Hope our cap room helps us find this guy.
