Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Meet Carl Landry

Carl Landry will make his debut as a Sacramento King tonight in Los Angeles. To help us get the flavor of what it's like to watch and root for Landry, I asked Tom Martin of The Dream Shake, SBN's fantastic Rockets blog, to share a few words. Also be sure to check out Jim Kozimor's interview with Landry on KHTK.com and Sam Amick's story on his arrival. And many thanks to Tom and the other writers who helped introduce us to our new Kings.

***

I've been through many trades, as the Rockets have always been active on the market. I'm used to seeing players shuffle in and out. It happens all the time.  Sometimes, a particular acquisition can find a nice role on a team and gain a special trust from fans. Then he leaves, and you move on. Such is life in the NBA.

But this is Carl Landry. He grew up as a Rocket, raised from scratch. Watching him play in a different uniform is going to be one of the strangest sights I'll ever see. It's like losing a son to college. You knew it could happen, but you never expected it to happen.

You guys are going to love Carl. If you loved watching Kevin Martin grow, you're in for a similar experience, albeit not as personal, as Kevin was essentially born a King. Ziller took the words right out of my mouth: Landry is the power forward version of Speed Racer, an efficient scorer that could use work in other areas, but is otherwise a joy to watch. The fans will love his hunger and heart, and the team will love his playful, yet driven attitude. He's a fearless, tenacious teddy bear. Few people genuinely enjoy playing basketball as much as Carl Landry does.

Carl has improved his offensive game dramatically over the past few seasons, effectively transforming from "that bouncy energy guy off the bench" to a fourth-quarter menace and a reliable post presence. He has learned how to adjust to facing taller defenders and has extended his game to about fifteen feet from the rim. He's a fantastic finisher around the rim, as he is athletic enough to utilize a double-clutch or reverse lay-up to avoid having his shot blocked. Then, sometimes, you'll see a nice gorilla dunk.

Star-divide

He has developed a reliable jumper, and when he is able to face up against a defender, he can either take the shot or make a one-dribble spin move to the rim with ease. In other words, he's a quicker version of David West on offense, minus the ability to shoot comfortably from anywhere inside the arc. Up to this point, Carl has been finding different ways to score from as many angles as possible. In addition, he has developed a sweet free throw stroke and was shooting near 90% for the better part of the first half of the season. He seems to have found all the right tools; now he must refine them.

While Carl is an elite offensive rebounder, his defensive rebounding needs work. He doesn't always box out effectively, and when Carl doesn't put 100% effort into something, he's likely to suffer. He's a solid post defender, but won't block any shots. If anything, he is able to use his quickness to get position before an opposing forward can post up.

If there is one word I can use to describe Landry, it is that he is tough. He is incredibly tough, mentally and physically. He got shot in the leg and barely missed any time. He lost his teeth to Dirk Nowitzki's elbow, missed one game, then returned three nights later to score 27 points. This is the glaring difference between Landry and Martin: Carl can take a beating, and it won't matter, because he still will try to jam one in your face.

Lastly, I think Landry will fit very well with Spencer Hawes. I haven't seen much of Hawes, but he seems to be a capable post that will take a double team away from Landry, something that he has not yet figured out how to beat. Landry can be a go-to guy in spurts, but mostly finds his points in complementary bunches, either off of offensive rebounds, loose balls, or when he is set up by another teammate.

Again, you guys are going to love Landry. I can't promise you that he will be an all-star caliber guy due to his lack of dimensionality and size, but if anyone can prove the doubters wrong, it is absolutely Carl Landry. Best of luck to Carl and to the Kings this season.

It was really strange

I looked at the rockets page and they have a picture of Martin holding up his new jersey. Never has red and white seemed so strange to me.

Very good analysis

I’m an avid Houston fan and could not agree more with these comments. Carl Landry is a future NBA All Star. I hate to see him leaving Houston. When the Kings visit Toyota Center Carl will get a standing ovation.

The trade makes sense for both teams. With McGrady gone the Rockets needed a wing scorer. K-Mart knows Coach Adelman’s system and will be a perfect fit. The Rockets already have Luis Scola at the four and he’s very good. Landry deserves to start and that’s the opportunity he’ll get in Sacramento.

I’m also sad to see Joey Dorsey included in this trade. His college coach at Memphis loved him and a number of scouts considered him the best big man coming out of college a year ago. He’s got some learning to do before he will become a force in the NBA. Needs to cut down on fouls and learn to get position under the basket. Joey has shown flashes of brilliance. When they sent him down to the D-League recently he dominated. Dorsey is a project but one with a high ceiling.

Daryl Morey sent Donte Green and the draft choice that became Casspi to Sacramento in the Artest trade. Now he’s sending Landry and Dorsey. He’s also sent McGrady to the Knicks. What an amazing GM! He’s successfully rebuilding three NBA teams.

Ha

Nice. I have to thank Morey for trading us Donte and Casspi for a one year rental of RonRon.

by sactown on Feb 20, 2010 8:50 AM PST up reply actions

I totally forgot............

That we have essentially gotten Donte Greene, Omri Casspi, Carl Landry, and Joey Dorsey for Ron-Ron (who’s gone-gone to Lakerland) and Kevin Martin. Houston has essentially given us a huge part of our future nucleus.

by Devastation Co. MMA on Feb 20, 2010 9:07 AM PST up reply actions

Well, you had to draft well, too.

Tyreke and Omri are Kings picks, Greene was a legit Rockets pick, unlike Batum.

I’ve always liked Landry and was upset that he wasn’t part of the Artest trade. I hope he goes “Milsap” the rest of this season. I know he’s not as good a rebounder, but by this I mean when in Dec-Jan last season he(Milsap) played so outside-of-his salary it made Utah look like they were in violation of labor laws. Give em hell, kid.

Landry and Garcia

Sounds like Landry is just what we need at the 4 spot. I think it is good for JT to move over to the 5 spot too. Finally, I believe Cisco is perfect at the 2 spot. He will be the perfect compliment to Evans. He can help bring the ball up the floor, can hit the 3, play a little semi-point like Beno did when Evans and Beno were on the floor together (don’t forget Reggie had him play some point and was the back up plan in case we were unable to resign Beno), and more importantly our exterior defense will improve, and he is a leader. I believe he will be the perfect compliment to Evans.
I know a lot of you were sad to see Kevin go, but Cisco is quite a step up defensively from Martin.
I am a little concerned about Donte’s minutes as he is one of my favorites, but I am sure PW will work it out.
If Landry turns out to be like everyone says he is, I believe these next 30 games will be like first 30 games with the line up changes.

by noreboundsnorings on Feb 20, 2010 9:08 AM PST reply actions

I like my shooting guards to shoot well.

Beno’s stats are better than Garcia’s in almost every category, and even 3-pointers & rebounds, the difference is slight. Beno has been very consistent this year, albeit from the bench. If he can stay solid as a starter, then he’s the guy at the 2 until we get a legit starter via draft or trade. Frankly, given the matchup problems he provides, I’d rather see Greene backing up Udrih at SG that have Cisco be the first guy off the bench, and that will be a good way to keep Donté on the floor with Landry eating a ton of minutes at PF.

Ime Udoka also plays a far smarter brand of basketball, if you want the truth. If his shooting percentage was a little higher, Garcia would easily be the most overpaid and superfluous guy on the squad instead of Nocioni.

by andy sims on Feb 20, 2010 9:36 AM PST up reply actions

On matchup problems

if you want to talk matchup problems, Cisco makes much more sense at the 2 than Beno. Because even if Beno’s playing the 2 on offense, opposing teams will put their point guards on him and their bigger wing players on Reke, this nullifying Reke’s tremendous size advantage. I want to play as big as possible, and that’s playing Cisco (well, actually, Donte, but I like Cisco’s ball handling next to Reke). Like what Westphal said in the Bee today:

“I see ’Cisco as a real versatile player who can handle the ball some,” said Westphal, who plans to use the 6-foot-7 García for approximately 20 minutes. “If they put the point guard on him, you can use his size to your advantage. He can space the floor because he’s a three-point shooter. He’s a veteran player.”

by LPKingsFan on Feb 20, 2010 9:59 AM PST up reply actions

I agree w/ keeping Donte on the floor

but Cisco is just as good (if not better) a 3pt shooter. For perimeter D’s sake, Tyreke/Cisco/Donte is a good starting lineup.

by sactown on Feb 20, 2010 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

For their careers

Beno’s a higher FG%, Cisco a higher 3pt%. If Cisco gets back to where he was two year’s ago, he’s a 39% 3pt shooter, which is plenty good. Over their careers, Cisco is a better rebounder, more steals, more blocks, less turnovers, far less assists.

I like Cisco and Tyreke together, because Beno is happiest when he has the ball a lot and Cisco is a better complimentary player I think.

New lineup

I am really liking the Kings new starting Lineup. I think Hawes plays much better coming of the bench and ever since K-mart had returned, Thompson stats hurt and without him playing well we are not a good team. I think Laundry can be a good addition to this team and im hoping we can at least break 30 wins this season.

by Jeffo66 on Feb 20, 2010 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Two days later & Three years later

I think what is especially telling is that two days later many of the Sacramento Kings forums have already shifted from lamenting the loss of Martin and are all about excitement for Mr. Carl Landry being here whereas the Houston Rockets forums that I’ve scoured are moreso still lamenting the loss of Landry in a greater fashion than being excited about Kevin Martin’s arrival.

On a side note, three years later after the dust settles on the conditional picks that Houston received, we will truly see who got the best of this deal. It very well could be any of the three parties involved.

And I’ll second or third the notion thanking Morey for Donte/Casspi/Landry/Dorsey. To me, this year, Kevin was like that girlfriend you’ve been with forever so you just stay with them, but really you wanted out of the relationship.

Does anyone know if FOR ABSOLUTLEY SURE the paperwork on the trade is actually complete and that Landry is starting for sure tonight?

Nothing is "especially telling"

Other than Kings fans have shifted their focus from the loss of the things K-Mart brang to the team to the things Landry will bring to this team. And the fans are excited about it.

by blako on Feb 20, 2010 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

Implication by me = .......

In general (excluding EDM7 and those that share his sentiment), Kings Fans were able to offset their “Speed Remorse” with “Landry Mania” more quickly than the Rockets Fans doing the opposite.

I also want to point out that Landry and Kevin Martin have alot of parallels in their careers with regard to draft position, yearly stats/minutes increases. If the parallels continue then presumably Landry is going to break out next season. The big difference which i’m elated about is that Landry is a frontcourt player.

Here’s to hoping that the Knicks get shafted and are only able to attract one free agent to make them good enough to keep the Rockets from getting amazing picks from them. And here’s to hoping that Landry follows the Martin career path and becomes a solid 2nd/3rd option in our starting lineup. And here’s to hoping that Kevin has success in Houston, but only enough success to where we look back at this trade and say “Wow Petrie, you’ve done it again”.

Rockets play at 7:00, Kings at 7:30… I’m going to try and streamview as much of both games as i can to see both of their first games.

by Nutterball on Feb 20, 2010 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Mania?

I’d cool it. He hasn’t even played for us yet. There’s still a long way to go to decide whether he’s a short term interior fix, (another teams bench player becomes our starter) or a soluton we can build around long term.

Another Landry Observation

Carl never got to play huge minutes in Houston because he was coming off the bench behind Luis Scola. He was able to average 16 plus points a game while playing maybe 22 minutes. When you put him into a starting role and let him play the whole came he will become that 25 point go to guy.

It took a while for other teams to zero in on Carl with their defenses. With Yao Ming out of the lineup and 6’6" Chuck Hayes playing the center position, Carl began to draw double teams. That’s a recent thing so he’s still learning how to cope.

If he’s playing alongside a center who can score it should keep the defense honest and give Carl more opportunities. I was thinking they might trade Scola and keep Landry. If he were playing alongside Yao Ming for 38 minutes a game no telling how many points the Rockets front like could have scored.

There are too many uncertainties to think about re-signing him right now. How well do Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes develop? What kind of numbers will Landry put up getting starter minutes? The upcoming CBA/lockout? The shrinking cap? Let him play a game or two in a Kings uniform, then we can worry about a new contract.

When Carl was a restricted free agent the Charlotte Bobcats came after him and made a $3Million offer which he signed and the Rockets Matched.

I think Carl and his agent will want to test the market again next year. If he does as well as I expect then don’t be surprised if he’s looking for a large multi-year contract similar to K-Mart’s.

by davesmall on Feb 20, 2010 1:45 PM PST reply actions

The good thing is we can lock him up for next season

Because following next season, there is likely to be a new CBA in place.

The new CBA is likely to lower the dollar amounts spent on players, and may even have some mechanism to do away with the fully guaranteed contracts. That would be nice since it would prevent teams from being locked into a big contract for its entire length when they mistake, as happened to us with K9. Also would be nice for those cases like C-Webb when an injury causes a player to no longer be what he once was, but is still healthy enough to play and not be covered by insurance.

Won't matter

The Kings have the option to pick him up. For his production, 3 million is impossible value. There is no way the Kings won’t pick up his option next year.

And don't make an argument about max cap space

The Kings already have max cap space next year is.

Poll Update

More than 82% currently approve of the Landry for Martin trade, according to my poll. As they say in Cook County, vote early and often.

I even voted yes. (In the context of today.)

That doesn’t mean I don’t like Kevin Martin.

Good question

You should know. You’re the one that keeps bringing up the StR groupthink crap

I hate to slam a guy who is leaving our fair City, but...

…saying that Landry is the Power Forward version of Speed Racer, and then listing Landry’s attributes: toughness, hunger, durability, defense, 4th quarter go to guy…

…makes me think he’s really the anti-Speed Racer. No?

They are different players

but when it’s said he’s the SpeedRacer of F it’s because of his efficiency on the offensive side of the ball.

You rarely passed on a chance to slam Martin before

why start now?

But, hey! So do all the Carl's Junior nicknames that are coming out.

I don’t understand why this rush to come up with a nickname for him. Let it simmer a little and a name will surface.

This is where you are going to draw a line in the sand?

Against the time-honored and completely harmless and ridiculous StR tradition of throwing a gazillion nicknames against the wall and seeing what sticks? Good luck to you.

I wouldn't be here, if I didn't get something out of it.

StR is a culture, which has developed over time. I wasn’t a part of that process. Although, I may not appreciate some of the juvenile humor and over-the-top sarcasm, there are a lot of things that I do appreciate.

  • The basketball acumen at StR is great. I love the various opinions and viewpoints that are expressed.
  • Many of you have a long-history being fans of the Kings, which provides an interesting perspective, in which to appreciate the Kings of today.
  • There is a lot of information about the other teams in the league, which adds a dimension beyond just the Kings.

I love the Kings and all the players on the team. The team has been a private passion of mine for past five years,or so. Most of my friends are into football, so it is nice to have other people who also enjoy basketball. This site increases my enjoyment of the Kings all the more. I appreciate all of the up-to-the minute information that comes on here. You are one of the best writers on here. I look forward to reading other people’s opinions on what is happening, as well as sharing my own thoughts.

I am not interested in being shown the door. I didn’t know that it was a prerequisite to like everything that is on this site. I merely expressed an opinion.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

Two words -

De caf.

I’m just kidding around. If I am too low brow, it’s probably best to ignore me, as I am definitely a graduate of the “beat it to death with a stick” school.

Oh, and I loved George Carlin, too. That doesn’t mean that I can’t laugh at Pee Wee Herman.
