Paul Westphal Approval Rating - Feb. '10
Based on this morning's Amick story (detailing the locker room grumblings over an inconsistent line-up) and the trading of Kevin Martin, now seems like an ideal time to post the Westphal Approval Rating's second edition.
Last time (Jan 26 '10) Coach Westphal garnered a hefty 92% approval from us. Since that time the team has gone 3-9 (now sitting at 18-38 overall), with high points coming in back to back road wins over New York and Detroit, and the unquestioned low coming on a 32 point shellacking at Golden State, with Martin getting traded at halftime.
As Ziller detailed in his excellent piece this morning, the Kings do indeed have the most inconsistent rotation in the league, with our most-used lineup playing a paltry 100 minutes together over the entire season. That is pretty mind-blowing to me, as Memphis' starting 5 has played over 1,000 together.
So, here is the question.

Mainly because you can at least tell that the guy knows what he’s doing most of the time, at least in coaching the players. On rotations, he’s still trying to figure out who deserves minutes. Nobody’s a clear cut winner for Playing Time except Tyreke really.

I thought his title was Coach not Judge
When I’m hungry I can keep going and opening the refrig door but it’s still going to be empty, or I can go to the store and buy some food.
PW has had enough time and opportunity to know that the bench is empty, it’s time for him to start using that coaching ability to fill the core players with talent, and let them win some games, instead of micro managing the games.

While I think that
you’ve been a little early with some of your criticisms (two months ago when PW was experimenting I backed him on that for example), I think he’s had a lot of time for that, and I’m with otis and starting to move to your camp HighTops.
We have 28? games left, these games are priceless practice sessions for getting guys used to doing what you want them to do when we get good. PW needs to use these games to build the foundation for next year, and the chaos we have at the moment isn’t getting it done.
So I’m going to vote yes, but I wouldn’t be inking an extension right now; PW needs to move from good guy that has the player’s respect to coach with a plan, and he needs to do it soon.
What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.
I like that, as the season winds down, if we do a countdown, we should us Priceless Practice Sessions instead of games

I voted no at this point
I am in no way saying he should be fired. I think it a very hard task for a coach to take a 17 win team & turn them into even an average team. That being said with the aquisitions of Reke & Omri & our early season success it is not to much to ask for significant improvement. I know we had an easy schudule but last year that wouldn’t have helped. So why did it help this year?
By now there should be a set starting line-up & a set rotation.
JT & Spencer have regressed while Donte has progressed but Tyreke hasn’t gotten any better & might be regressing
The team is frustrated
Our former star was unhappy & had to be traded
These are all major concerns.
I love beating dead horses.
Vinny Del Negro is a better coach than Paul Westphal
And all he does is yell, “ATTACK! ATTACK!”
"Oh, y ahora ¿quién podrá defenderme?" "¡Yo!"
Actually
I’d kind of like Westphal to do that. It would give us something to look forward to.

Nope
PW should know by now what the main problems are and have them on the way to being corrected. I also think that there is not an identity with this team. I thought they were going to be a running team? Then they tried to be a half court team but they aren’t posting anybody up!! How dumb. Time to become a run and gun team or a half court team. If you are a run and gun team, then you have to be willing to let players loose and let them play like Nocioni – whoever touches the ball can let it fly or go 1-on-1 ala the Lakers and Suns. If you want to be a halfcourt team, then you HAVE to START the offense in the post and work your way OUT and use pick and rolls ala the Jazz or pick and pops like the Celtics.
Also when a player makes a mistake, they have to be left in the game to learn! No player is going to thrive by worrying about being pulled out every time they make a mistake or get scored upon. How would you like it if you got repremanded, replaced and taken off the task every time you made a mistake at your work?

By the Way
I’m not saying that Paul is a bad coach. I just think that at this point in the season, the Kings should be improving. I understand that there will be ebbs and flows and some down moments in a season but even with the Kings’ record in the last 30 games being atrocious, the team as a unit have not seen any growth and I put that squarely on PW.

I voted yes
Because we have seen some improvement and are even younger than last year (overall).
The early season surprise .500 ball has made a lot of us want to see more and more improvement and while I can bag on Paul’s lack of set rotation. It seems to me that (in reality) we don’t really have that much to work with. A bunch of guys who have been in the league less than 3 season and (most) of the team is under 25.
All we have to do is look at the teams that win championships. The average age is generally something in the 18-30 range. And while I agree that other teams (such as Memphis and primarily OKC) are achieving (or over-achieving) they have been in full rebuild mode longer than we have.
In OKC brooks has a pretty set rotation of players who have played together several years. They are familiar with eachother and that makes it easier to get familiar with the coach/system (it helps that Brooks emphasizes defense as well).
I am very interested to see how we end the season in terms of progress and W’s L’s.
Go Kings.

Yes, by virtue of one over-arching point:
It’s insane to think that another coaching change is a positive development at this point. Westphal is no Natt.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
My understanding of the Poll was "Do you approve", not
should he be replaced. The two things aren’t mutually inclusive. I can disapprove of our core players not getting extended and consistent minutes without wishing to replace Westphal.
This is a new coaching challenge for him also. Other then college I’m sure he hasn’t had to deal with so many young and inexperienced players before. I hope he’ll get better as the season whines down, and then again next season. I’m just not happy with the development of any of the young players, except maybe Donte. And, I think that is more on Donte’s work and change in phylosopy then in Westphal’s doing.
As to the performance of the team, wins & losses. Even with the loss of Martin to injury, with drafting 2 or the top 6 rookies of the draft, and Tyreke being the top ROY candidate, we should have won 18 games even without a coaching staff.

Thanks for the correction. I see it now.
One thing that is not being said that I think bears saying: You make a point about development, and there should be some serious scrutiny given to the rest of the coaching staff beyond Westphal.
Other than that, “as the season whines down” is classic under present circumstances, absolutely classic.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
Hopefully
"as the season whines down"
was just last year. We’ll see.

I voted yes for now
Because I like how Omri, Donte, and Tyreke are playing. Whether I will vote Yes in a month remains to be seen… HighTops makes some excellent points above and his basketball knowledge far exceeds mine!

Young team, exceeding expectations.
I still don’t think that Westphal is the coach of the next great Kings team, but he’s fine for now.

I'd suggest a minor revision to these polls
Change the choices to be Strongly approve, somewhat approve, somewhat disapprove, and strongly disapprove. Still doesn’t allow for a wussy neutral answer, and it makes it a little clearer how strong his support is at the moment.

Bottom line: the team has regressed
So, no – though I still have hope that he can begin to turn this around.
Also, his popularity is due more to his likability than to anything he’s done with the team (and perhaps some leftover good-will from the team’s excellent start).
"I hate all sports as rabidly as a person who likes sports hates common sense."

we're all too stupid to like him for any reason other than he gives good interviews
baaa

Not stupid
From outside, it is often quite difficult to differentiate why a team is either struggling or doing well – and who therefore to blame or praise (even for a genius such as myself).
If a coach is not incontrovertibly incompetent (See Natt, Kenny), and likable – he tends to get the benefit of the doubt, especially in the short term. Hence the current vote.
"I hate all sports as rabidly as a person who likes sports hates common sense."
-H.L. Mencken
So that's the only reason?
Nothing about having a young team, being a first year coach after being absent for years, or having already seen flashes of good play? Or maybe the fact that we already surpassed our wins from last year?
"Children want what they want when they want it." ... Andy Sims
Young team is
another reason for him getting the benefit of the doubt. You are right.
As for your other explanation, any team, however great or horrible they or their coach is, has flashes of good play.
As for surpassing the win total from last year is concerned, I believe that getting 2 new starters – who also happen to be our most talented players – is a much more plausible explanation than anything Westphaul has done.

Tough choice...
But I went with No.
My biggest gripe all year has been lack of consistent roles for most players on the team. Hopefully now that the roster is set (no more waiting for Martin or Garcia), we’ll see some more consistency.
I voted no
But as someone mentioned here above, I don’t think we should change coaches.
I still believe he is the right man for the job, but the team has been sliding (4-22 since New Year), and I just don’t see any identity on the team right now. Even if the bad play can solely be attributed to the players (and I don’t think that’s the case), it’s the responsibility of the coach to shape the team’s identity. And there are no excuses left to postpone forging an identity.
We need an established rotation. The offense has to become less stagnant, and should have some solid bread and butter plays. Defensively, rebounding and to a lesser extent perimeter defense should become a priority, IMO.
Dunking Dutchman
Wiinning and Losing - the difference between genius and lunacy when it comes to coaching
Paul Westphal went from crafty chemist to mad professor in two months. The confidence is low as the losing has killed much of the hustle and bounce that the first two months brought.
The Kings are a young team with below average talent. They have an up and coming star in Tyreke Evans who has much to learn and is showing the will and aptitude to improve. All is good but the process is slow, long and painful. Patience (the patience preacher has spoken), next year will be better (more talent, more maturity).

winning cures all ills.
They start to win and the hustle and bounce will return. They go on a 4 or 5 game losing streak and it starts all over again.

Yep
I remember winning two games on the road right before the all-star break, and how excited everyone was. A lot has changed since then…

Approval Rating is dumb
How the heck do we know how to judge the guy? If i put a bunny rabbit on a podium and asked everyone to vote on whether it’s male or female, it really doesn’t matter what the vote comes down to. Unless I were to grab the damb rabbit and show everyone its crotch area it’s all just a guess based on missing evidence. I dunno, I feel this stuff is just pointless.
Could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
Serious?
The approval rating seems reasonable to me. There are lots of ways to begin to judge Westphal. He shares his coaching philosophy, how he interacts with his players, his coaching decisions (lineups, plays, etc), results, etc. BTW – I’m pretty sure he is a male.

u might have a point
I think using the term “rabbit crotch” in an arguement is sort of the litmus test of whether or not someone is going a bit too far
(and this is the point where i noticed the “hares” double entendre … i think i am just going to walk away from the train wreck of a comment thread I created)
