Here's the letter I sent to KHTK yesterday:
February 22, 2010
Mr. Mark Evans
KHTK 1140 AM
I'm writing to commend you for one of the shows you air on KHTK, and to explain why I've decided not to listen to another of your shows anymore.
I'll start with praise for your morning show. I've always felt that the Rise Guys was an enjoyable show, but the addition of Mark Kreidler has really added some depth to the mix. He knows what he's talking about, and can express himself sensibly and logically. Even when I don't agree with his point of view, I always respect it and find myself impressed with him. Congratulations on improving an already solid show.
On the other hand, starting today, I will no longer be turning on SportsLine in the afternoon. While Grant Napear has never been particularly listenable, lately he has reached a new low: personal opinion unburdened by facts, delivered with extreme rudeness. His approach toward anyone--callers, journalists, or guests--who doesn't support his (often bizarre) ideas is that they are idiots, and he expresses that attitude with words and demeanor completely devoid of civility. Initially, when Mike Lamb was added to the mix, he provided some balance to Napear's distasteful behavior, but lately he does nothing but support and agree with his partner.
Napear's insistence on belittling particular players, even after they've left Sacramento, says a lot more about him than it does about those players. I have no quarrel with broadcasters who call out players who they feel are not playing well or playing hard; in fact, I respect that when performed in a rational and objective way. What I can't stomach is the extent to which those opinions are stated repetitively, in the face of scant evidence and even of facts that contradict them; and when those convictions color the objectivity of Napear and Lamb in covering the real stories.
When it becomes clear that Napear and Lamb are no longer interested in even-handed commentary, and are more interested in defending statements they've made previously, it's time for me as a listener to move on. I can get my sports news from outlets that give me better content and less objectionable delivery, such as SportsLine ESPN 1320, the Bee, and the web.
While many listeners may disagree with me, I can guarantee you that there are just as many, particularly among Kings fans, who feel the way I do. The current direction of SportsLine is driving listeners away in favor of better analysis and coverage. I urge you to consider replacing Napear and Lamb in order to draw that community back to your afternoon programming.
Thank you again for further improving the Rise Guys show, and for listening to my concerns about SportsLine.
And here's the reply I got today:
Thanks for taking the time to feed me your thoughts. I always appreciate the feedback.
Gosh, thanks for the thorough and sincere response.
