Spencer Hawes is inactive tonight, with Kings coach Paul Westphal saying "I saw where he's having a hard time understanding his role. He should understand it tonight." Just guessing here, but pretty sure he's referencing today's story

That is a giant punch in the balls.

Nothing ambiguous about it, at least.

First impression

I don’t mind it. Maybe there are roles that are being explained and the young guys are just not meeting the expectation set. PW doesn’t seem like some kind of dictator that would do something like this just because a player came out and said something negative.

If the coaching staff never explained what the roles and expectations are and then Spencer gets suspended, then this is a douchey move. I don’t see PW being that type of person.

He could handle it internally

or just give him a dnp-cp. His quote is pathetic.

Again, I'm leaning towards the fact that expectation have been explained

and, IF that’s the case, then Spencer’s quotes are also disrespectful. I’m not playing sides here and I’m staying neutral. Not making judgements on it.

I'm making a judgement ed

I’m f’ing pissed :-)

PW chose the way that involves maximum embarrassment for Hawes when he didn’t have to; its too petty and vindictive for me from the guy that’s supposed to be the mature one in the situation.

I’m not saying PW doesn’t have a right to be pissed or do something about it, but I don’t like the way he handled this one.

Completely understandable

I do hate the drama this is bringing to the team.

What I don't like is the double standard.

May and Tyreke basically said the same thing, yet Hawes is the one getting punished

Honestly what a crappy move by Westphal

looks like he’s completely losing control of the locker room (even Tyreke was on him in the Bee article) so he lashes out like an 8 year old.

Definite echoes of Theus. It’s one thing to bench a buy, but it’s another thing to talk that kind of crap to the media. Is that supposed to impress people. Classless, classless, classless.

seems like were all calling for his head now?

IMO there must have been something that happened with spence to make him do the things he did, OR
hes dealing with his personal issues and that is affecting his profession.
Either way, I say give the guy a break, You’d give any of the kings a break, to say he’s classless is a bit uncalled for. The guy has been professional with the kings for the entire season and hes not getting alot of help from his team. Its not like the players have been consistant with their behaviors or performances as much as PW has.

Not a fan

I think this was a terrible move, and the remark to go with it just shows poor judgement and character on PW’s part. Don’t start abusing the media and dividing the locker-room like Theus, this isn’t your soap opera, it’s your team.

Westphal is a prick.

by sacman on Feb 23, 2010 7:35 PM PST reply actions

I like Westphal

But I think this one is a big swing and a miss. In fact, if he is going to practice what he preaches, he owes Spencer an apology – not for the DNP, but for the media-quoted comment.

There are 2 things that come to mind here

First, PW’s wife is in bad health and she’s not local so he’s had to go to SoCal to take of her. That has got to be incredibly stressfull for the guy. And when you’re under emotional stress like that it’s pretty hard to stay calm and keep your perspective when you react to other stressors in your life. Given PW’s demeanor in the past about not throwing players under the bus when bad things happen I would surmise that his reaction was stress related and this shall hopefully pass.

That said, PW has seemingly had it in for Spencer ever since he didn’t show up for Summer League. If I were Spencer, in addition to talking to my coach, I’d be talking to my agent in a big way planning my exit strategy in the event the situation is really going south. There have got to be a lot of teams that would love to have a center with Spencer’s skill set. Life and an NBA career is way too short to be playing for a guy who has it in for you.

PW = D-bag

Its official. I get the whole running the team thing, and demanding respect, but come on. He has f’d over Hawes enough. But instead of admiting it, he benches him. Unclassy move.

Atleast we know where the team stands

Currently getting smashed by the lowly pistons. Looks a lot like the NY game before Theus got fired. UH-OH!

I'm starting to wonder

If Westphal is up to the task of mentoring such a young team. Maybe he’s just too old to relate.

Honestly, those quotes by Spencer didn’t seem that out of line to me.

Perhaps there was

If they decided to sit Spencer for a game for some things he might have said that didn’t make the media, I don’t have a problem with that. But PW is the coach – take the high road, tell the media that it was an in-house matter and they are working it out.

But to make these sarcastic comments about Spencer looks unprofessional and petty…and without that additional info it appears Spencer’s being made a scapegoat for comments that other players made in a similar manner.

Ultimately, it makes the team continue to look disorganized and vindictive. After the recent issues with Kevin, I’m thinking it might be a good time to clean up their internal communication.

Your logic makes complete sense

and I agree.. I guess maybe Im throwing a bit of sympathy his way in light of his situation at the moment. Everyone makes mistakes but for the most part I think he is a good coach..

by chenp22 on Feb 24, 2010 6:29 AM PST up reply actions

everyone should have sympathy for his personal situation

and I’m ok with a coach that makes mistakes, it happens. But I hope PW and Spencer resolve this one and PW shows some leadership and maturity in doing so.

Even more not impressed after the postgame interview

PW came across like a spoiled kid. His little smirk and, “You’ll have to ask him.” I can’t imagine Adelman playing those kinds of games. Wonder if Spencer is wishing he got traded with Speed.
