Spence, Beno, and Landry played really well.

But good lord Tyreke Evans is good at basketball. Deron Williams really does not like to play us anymore. I also feel it is somewhat poetic that Kevin Martin had good game and bot the Kings and Rockets won.

This game was decided by....a wet spot on the floor.

Great win but the real hero of this on was literally the sweat off of Tyreke Evans back. With 47.4 seconds left and the Kings up by 3, Evans, trying to fight through a pick at the free throw line, tripped and fell along the left side of the key. 11 seconds later and during the same posession, Williams came around a screen and headed down the left side of the lane only to slip on the sweat that Tyreke Evans had left all over floor. Williams fell, the ball went out of bounds to the Kings and the rest is history.

Hard to say if it was a change in Westphal's attitude, to not change the lineup

The lineup was doing so well, he probably didn’t feel the need to tinker with it, as he usually does. Perhaps we will see a more consistent lineup in the future after this game.

Some stats you might find interesting

In 09/10 when Spencer plays more than 28mpg he aver. 14.9 pts & 8.0 rebs
In games where Spencer plasy less than 28 he avers 7.4 pts & 4.5 rebs

In 08/09 when Spencer played more than 28 mpg he aver. 14.1 pts & 8.5 rebs
in games where Spencer played less than 28 he aver. 8.2pts & 5.4 rebs.

In 09/10 the average PT in the games under 28 mpg is about 21 mpg
In 09/10 the average PT in the games over 28 mpg is about 34 mpg.
So, the increase in mpg is 62%, but his pts go up 100% and rebs go up 78%

The numbers were so dramatic last year. As his minutes went up his pts & rebs went up proportionally. I can’t account for the variables between the two years. But, the variation in the increase in pts this year 100% versus the increace in rebs 78% problably has something to do with the increase in good rebounder on the teams this year (Tyreke, Omri), so there’s less for he to get.

So, either he stays in the game longer when he’s rebounding and scoring better. Or, he rebounds & scores better when he’s in the game longer.

I don’t know if this was mentioned on the broadcast or if they showed any of it but Westphal was totally encourage Spencer on the sidelines whenever he came out and after the game they had a pretty nice embrace after the final buzzer that seemed to say “hell yeah we are on the same page now” and it is just great considering how crappy this whole situation could have played out.

I’d do a Lttg’s view (maybe tomorrow) because we had a few beers – but a great quality win tonight!
Thank god the Fts didn’t kill us! We were in serious pain as they were missed. That Reke-Beno backcourt was more than just excellent and of course Hawes totally manned up.

lol -I know, I was already counting it as a moral victory..

So surprised to see the team pull it off against the Jazz. In the past, when they play well against a good team like the Lakers or Celtics, they lose it at the end. I wasn’t expecting anything different this time. But, this time the Kings were the ones to prevail.

This was one of the things Westphal said the team had to learn to do – close out games. Doing it against the Jazz was a big step in their development. While it may not seem so, the team is improving.

Most fun to watch was Donté’s destruction of the Knicks I think. Best overall game to watch in my opinion was the Wizards v. Kings on ESPN that went to the wire and Tyreke picked Arenas to win the game.

Tyreke has Deron Williams number.

Also, does anybody know why Donté didn’t play?

Love hearing about Westphal and Spence hamming it up.

Kings win! Damn it feels good to say that. Also, I’m just going to put this out there, but I’ve been on the Spencer bandwagon all year. I’m of the opinion that Spencer is the better player than JT and if he’s given time, he can show that. I think JT’s injury is a slight blessing in disguise because it will force Westphal to play Spence big minutes, and I think he can produce very well in that time and it will end the season on a good note for Spence. JT has a lot more learning to do than Spencer I think. Spencer needs JT’s effort and JT needs Spencer’s skill.

I also like Beno in the starting lineup with Spencer, because those two have some really good chemistry (they’re the only two guys who run a freaking pick and roll on this team), and Beno’s really our best shooter now that Kevin’s gone, and Beno and Reke have worked well together this year. I think we should stick with this lineup for the rest of the year.

Hit the nail on the head. Otherwise, really good game tonight, and I think that could turn out to be the most important win of the year. Any bad blood lingering from the trade deadline or from the Hawes/Westphal dustup should be gone. Everyone was clearly busting their butts tonight and a moral victory wouldn’t have been the same as beating a quality opponent. I think many Kings players and coaches are breathing a big sigh of relief after tonight…

Start Beno, Start Hawes, JT and Landry battle for the 4, 3 is up for grabs

Beno is just a solid player and is a perfect fit next to Tyreke. I hope PW sees that. His mid-range game and 3 point shooting really help space the floor for. We tend to run better sets on offense when he’s in and his stop and pop shot is money even on fast breaks. Having another primary ball handler and passer in helps Tyreke shine.

I agree that Hawes has a lot of potential (more than JT) and if he played with a brockman like abandon he’d be a great starting center. His outside shot helps space the floor and he’s an above avg help defender when he’s interested. I think being benched motivated him to come out and prove himself. Good move by PW.

From what we’ve seen from Landry so far I’d rather he give us balanced scoring by coming off the bench. He’d have more of a chance to be a primary scorer since Tyreke likes work out of the post too.

If Landry does start hopefully we also start our best defensive rebounding 3 (Casspi) to help make up for Landry’s biggest weakness. So today’s lineup worked.

Does anyone know our W-L record with Tyreke and Beno starting?

by ucla06 on Feb 27, 2010 12:11 AM PST reply actions

Brockman averages 6.7 fouls per 36 minutes.

He’s has a higher foul rate per minute than JT. If Spencer played like either one of them he’d never finish the 3rd quarter without fouling out.

There have been 8 line ups where Beno & Evans started and the record including tonight is 7-6.

by HighTops on Feb 27, 2010 12:55 AM PST up reply actions

7-6 is not bad at all

I’d love to see Spencer foul out of a few more games due to effort. He’ll grab 12rbs in 30 min one game and just 5rbs in 30min another game. He’s got the ability, he just needs to stay motivated. I think he has the height and length to avoid some of the brockman type fouls.

by ucla06 on Feb 27, 2010 1:06 AM PST up reply actions

Thanks for that.

I knew that Beno and Evans played well together, at least that has been my observation, but I didn’t know their record was 7-6. That is fantastic, considering all of the losses this season. I hope Westphal is going to look at this combination seriously from now on.

but it was nice to see the starters play so many minutes. I dont know why Ime gets time rather than Greene, and thats not a knock on Ime, as he is a solid professional, but his shot is uglier than Kirstie Allie after you told her you were out of donuts, and Donte needs the time.

I liked the lineup as it was with Landry starting...but agree with you about the 3 position being up for grabs.

Greene may have been a more effective player than Omri, last night. But, I am not going to second guess, because we came out with the W. I’d like to see Westphal use this starting lineup as a template for future starting lineups.

We are both agreed: This game’s lineup worked.

The best plus / minus stats went to this combination:

B. Udrih D. Greene T. Evans O. Casspi J. Brockman Kings

Nope

the lack of his mistakes helped to preserve the momentum. Last night the Kings had a winning attitude. Can they do that with JT?

by KingsFan on Feb 27, 2010 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

I believe so

Remember, we were also outboarded severly last night. If we were not so hot offensively (54.5%), we would have lost and the rebounding edge would have been one of the reasons.

Could the Kings be better with Hawes/Landry as starters and JT as the 3rd guy in the rotation? I’ll buy that. But better with out him? This team, as it is presently built? No way.

Totally agree

Dorsey isn’t the answer, and either is May. Utah had a solid 3-man rotation with Boozer, Millsap, & Okur with Fesenko as a 6min filler. The Kings needed that too.

Don't be too quick ...

to dismiss Dorsey. Given the chance, he could be the next Ben Wallace, who was 12th man in Wsh and then throw-in from Orlando in the Grant Hill trade … but 3 yrs later was DPOY.

Maybe Landry will be 6th man next year, but Donte’ and Cisco might also be better off the bench …. If JT plays mostly 4, Kings might want Dorsey to back up the 5 and teach Spence how to D-up and rebound. Just sayin’.

I think the shortened rotations helped.

Spencer, Tyreke, Landry, Beno all played very well. Cisco looking better. Noc hit a couple big threes. Dorsey played OK, used his fouls well :), passed well.

Great win. It was nice to see Utah be the team that folded in the clutch.
