Insider Trade Info
Someone from within the Kings organization (who is always one of the first to know of trades) told someone (that is related to me by blood) who told me that we shouldn't be surprised if a trade goes down before the deadline between the Kings and the Suns. The trade would be Amare for Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas. If that were to happen - what does StR think?! I think its still a little too early to tell about the quality of the Tyreke-Martin combo, but I like the sound of a Tyreke-Amare combo better.

If we locked up Amare,
I could deal with it. If it’s a rental…it’s bullshit.

UNLESS that underground cavern was a David Thorpe run training facility. The problem of course, is that players really need to play in NBA game situations for them to develop well. So a league of cyborgs needs to be built along with a regulation-sized stadium and tons of fake fans to simulate real NBA games to develop the players. Though at this point the team is spending billions of dollars to develop those players, so you know… maybe it would be smarter to just wait. -- Iashwash

Am I a stud amyer?
Is a bigger underachiever than Chris Webber. If Two time MVP and IsHeAstudamIer can’t come close to getting it done why does Amare suddenly come here and start racking up the championships. If your going to give up on JT or Spence and you’re thinking contender you better be getting a SuperStar in his Prime, which Amare is not and never has been. He just looks mean and it makes people think he’s more dominant then he actually is.

Just my opinion
but I LOVE the sound of this. Sac-born-and-raised life long Kings fan, but I spent 5 years in Phoenix going to school… Amare is a stud. I watched the guy night-to-night like I watch the Kings. I feel like I have a basic feel for what he could bring.
Am I to understand that you didn’t like Chris Webber? Hmmm, I’ll leave that alone.
Just because we get Amare, it doesn’t mean we gave up on Hawes or JT. This trade gets K-Mart out of the way (I love him but I like Tyreke more) AND keeps our picks AND keeps Greene/Casspi! Plus, we could always pick up more picks moving Noc to Boston.
The bottom line is that this trade makes the Kings legit immediately.
Starters:
Beno
Evans
Greene/Garcia
Hawes (His REAL position)
Amare
Bench:
Rodriguez
Udoka
Casspi
Brockman/May
JT
It would feel like the bench-mob days again! You may not agree, but it’s my opinion.

Amare is talking to the papers about not opting out of his contract at the end of the season
The general Consensus is that it’s a ploy to discourage teams that are just looking for an expiring contract from trading for him. In reality, he needs to opt out and sign a new long term max type contract before the CBA expires.
It would be hard to do a S&T Max deal, so the Kings would have to trust Amare would sign with them and would have to be willing to overpay for his services. And, that doesn’t sound like the current Kings thinking.

Who cares what Amare is saying right now.
The Suns have no incentive to tear it down and rebuild given that they don’t have a 1st round pick in 2010.

You know the CBA, if Amare exercises his ETO, what options to the Suns have?
They can pay him more than he’s worth, or let his walk and get nothing in return, right?
"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom

He's an unrestricted FA if he exercises the ETO.
He becomes a FA, and Phoenix can pay him more than anyone else with years and money. But, if Phx isn’t willing to pay him that money, they can, and probably will, let him walk.
The other option is a S&T, but I see very few teams willing to do that in the grand scheme of things. The last point is that if Amare does walk, it means the rebuild starts in Phoenix and say la vie to Steve Nash in Phoenix (it’s one reason they signed him to an extension).

actually i was wondering when exactly the CBA expires
I know its after next season but when during the off season. For example Carmelo can opt out in either late june or july of 2011. As a free agent would he be signing under the CBA? Or would he have to wait until the strike is over and then sign? (I’m guessing the first one just because I seem to recall Vlade signing with the Kings in the early summer of the last strike year but just double checking).
Could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
Its before the FA signing period next year as I recall
probably before the draft picks can be signed as well . . .

by CaliforniaJag on Feb 4, 2010 10:05 PM PST up reply actions
Sigh. This is such a loaded and complicated question to answer.
The biggest reason is that a player usually becomes BYC, and that is the biggest hurdle for any team to get around. Everybody loves to talk about S&T’s as a big deal, but very few of them happen. Rashard Lewis to Orlando (from Seattle) was one example, but all Seattle got was a traded player exception worth half of Shard’s 1st season salary in Orlando (the TPE was worth 8.7 million or something like that). But that TPE was worth it to Seattle because they ended up taking Kurt Thomas off Phoenix’s hands and 2 1st rounders (2008 which became Serge Ibaka and 2010—both were unprotected).
A more famous example is how Shawn Marion and Hedo Turkoglu ended up in Dallas and Toronto respectively. Because Orlando and Toronto had Bird Rights they were able to sign Turkoglu & Marion to contracts that Toronto and Dallas could not. Because there was extra money involved, that’s why Jerry Stackhouse went to Memphis (and 3 million of Mark Cuban’s cash). It allowed for the necessary pieces for each team to work the deal smoothly. But part of this was that Orlando got a 6.8 million TPE it’s not likely to use (they don’t need ANY MORE players for chrissake), and part of this was that Mark Cuban made it happen because he’s always willing to spend money even when it doesn’t seem worthwhile.
If that seems complicated, it’s because it really is. Very few teams, and I mean very few teams, would ever sign a player to a S&T deal unless they can get something back. One such instance is Detroit when they signed Grant Hill to a big contract in 2000, but got back Ben Wallace (mostly) in that deal. Why Orlando did it was because they thought they were going to sign Tim Duncan. Whoops.
S&T’s aren’t really worth it IMO because they ask a lot for 2 or 3 teams to get together and do things that help other teams and their best interests at the same time. It’s very difficult to get 2 or 3 teams, especially 2 or 3 teams that are competing for something similar (like a playoff spot or a championship) to help each other. There’s nothing in it for anyone to help you in that regard.
On the other hand, the legacy of S&T’s lives on because agents (and the media) love to play the angle of a S&T knowing that for some perverse reasons fans seem to think S&T’s are always possible. Quite frankly, I’m pretty surprised that the Marion-Turkoglu-Stackhouse deal happened the way it did given the mechanics and teams involved.

Thanks,
awesome explanation. I don’t think an Amare deal would be an issue, though. From your link:
BYC defines the salary that’s used to compare players for compliance under the Traded Player exception. Usually the salary used for comparison is the player’s actual salary. But under either of the following circumstances, a different salary is used when comparing salaries for trading purposes:
* The team is over the salary cap, used the Larry Bird or Early Bird exception to re-sign the player, and the player received a raise greater than 20% (unless it’s the minimum salary).
* The team is over the salary cap, it extended the player’s rookie scale contract, and the player received a raise greater than 20%.
Amare’s raise wouldn’t be greater than 20%, so he wouldn’t qualify as a BYC player (unless I’m reading it wrong). This means his actual salary would be used.

by CaliforniaJag on Feb 5, 2010 3:22 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah but does that raise mean over the life of the contract? Or from the previous season to the next season?
UNLESS that underground cavern was a David Thorpe run training facility. The problem of course, is that players really need to play in NBA game situations for them to develop well. So a league of cyborgs needs to be built along with a regulation-sized stadium and tons of fake fans to simulate real NBA games to develop the players. Though at this point the team is spending billions of dollars to develop those players, so you know… maybe it would be smarter to just wait. -- Iashwash
And apparently I answered my own question
It’s a raise from the previous season to the next one.
Here is an example of a BYC calculation: A player earned $2 million in 2004-05, after which he became a free agent. He then signs a new contract (re-signing with his previous team, which is over the salary cap) starting at $9 million. This player qualifies for BYC, so his trade value is the greater of his previous salary ($2 million) or 50% of his new salary ($4.5 million), or $4.5 million. So this player, who actually earns $9 million, is worth $4.5 million for trading purposes.
-- Iashwash
We also shouldn't be surprised if the Kings don't do anything at the trade deadline...
Wait till they figure out which pick they have, draft accordingly then see if the free agent waters have anything worthwhile. Otherwise sit on cap space.

The Kings are one of the few teams not rumored to be interested in Amaré to date
and since I don’t know who the heck Blue Boy is this is just another unsubstantiated trade rumor as far as I’m concerned. Could it happen? Of course it could, but it doesn’t seem in line with the teams direction. In light of a reduction in the salary cap and especially in light of the next CBA I don’t think that Amaré is going to get that close to a maximum contract especially after microfracture surgery and with unanswered questions regarding his eye. Or maybe the Suns extend him, trade with us for kevin and pieces and then we trade him to the dubs for Beidrens and Steph Curry.

I always appreciate that you care enough to pass this stuff along. But, a lot of people are skeptical for a lot of good reasons. Sam Amick has sources inside the organization that leak stuff to him all the time. With all due respect, how is what Amick reports as potential rumors any different than what you did (and this is noting your connection with your father)?

I guess I am confused.
Let me see if I get this correct.
1. Someone from the Kings organization ( Who is always one of the first to know of trades) told your father about an upcoming trade.
2. Your father told someone – you (about the trade).
3. We shouldn’t be surprised if a trade goes down before the deadline between the Kings and the Suns – presumably there is a trade in the works.
4. The trade would be Amare for Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas.
5. Further, your dad heard it from someone in the Kings organization (who you are not allowed to cite) that is always one of the first to know of trades.
So, you want to know if the trade goes down what would Sactown Royalty think.
Okay, so the person who first learned about this trade (not your father), could either be within management or not within management.
If the person were within management, then presumably he/she would hold a position of some trust and would be very careful who he/she speaks to so this would not be leaked to the press or to another employee’s family or friends. That does not sound like the case here.
The person could have been non-management, such as a secretary who would learn of such things as trades, as he/she could be part of typing up documents or other types of clerical duties.
Since your father presumably has loose lips, I would think it less likely that someone from management would tell him, although stranger things have happened. It is more likely that someone outside of management told your father. So your father may have learned it from the secretary, for example. (Perhaps he has a relationship with the secretary. Perhaps the secretary is your mother. But, I am getting off on another tangent.)
So now your father has this information, which he willingly shares with you, realizing that you will share it with others. Your father gives you one caveat, though, you are not to reveal the source from where your father learned of it. That sounds like you also know the source of the information otherwise you would not make the statement that the source could not be revealed. Otherwise, you would simply state that you do not know who the source is.
So, information in hand, you quickly post this on Sactown Royalty with the question of what do other Royalty fans think of the trade. Was this actually the reason that you posted this? Couldn’t you have simply asked the question as to what people would think of a trade for Amare using Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas? It wouldn’t be necessary to even mention that you got this inside information. Since you didn’t do that, I would conclude, if indeed you did actually receive this information from your father as you say, your motivation was to show that you have some inside information. If that was not the reason, then I guess that I am confused.
Please feel free to clarify any of this.

AND AMICK IS NEVER RIGHT!
He is always wrong. Am I the first person to notice. He’s like a flipping Weather Man. He’s always wrong unless it’s happening right now in real life. Like, “It’s raining right now.” “YES, I finally got one right.”

True about Amick
he always keeps us intrigued which is cool when you are bored & I love the peaches beef. But his rumors have about as much credibility as hoopsworld. Another site I visit for fun out of boredom
I love beating dead horses.
Ummm
there’s a reason they’re called trade rumors. When we hear these rumors from whatever sources there’s usually some truth to them. Just because the deals don’t happen doesn’t mean nothing was discussed.
www.mancancook.net
This
If Can’tSufferFools can show us an instance where Amick said something was a done deal and it turned out incorrect, I’d be more inclined to agree.
"When you look at him, you say: 'Holy God.'" - Pete Carril on Tyreke Evans
Seriously
Him reporting that the Hornets and Kings discussed a K9 for Okafor swap and it not going through doesn’t mean Amick was wrong. He just reported the rumor he’d heard, which is in his job description

Sam Amick also said (for those who have forgotten) that the deal never had seriously legs because of the money Okafor had coming to him.

I agree vfettke
I wasn’t slamming Amick. I’m not saying the guy makes stuff up just like with most rumors even the credible ones rarely happen. I say rarely only because of the sheer volume that come out

Not meaning any disrespect, OB,
but we’re hearing it from a blogger.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
Now I am even more confused.
Are you now saying that you are working within the organization? I thought you were reporting this as hearing it third-hand. Direct would mean that you heard it first-hand.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
Let me clear this up (I've heard this several times from before from OB)
OB’s father makes jersey for the Kings. When he goes to Arco to drop them off, he hears rumors. He then passes them on to OB. Get it now?

Correct
My dad makes the jerseys. So naturally he is one of the first to know of an official trade. He hears rumors all the time. I just report the ones that people in the organization claim are more legitimate than most. But I understand, as we all should, that they are just rumors until something actually happens.

Thanks for posting, sounds interesting. Your source is unimportant except as a stepping stone for discussion
As for an opinion – which is really all you are asking about – I am not an Amar’e fan. Not only do i fully respected the wisdom of BlueJohn (though an accented é is different than an apostrophe-ed e), I don’t like Amar’e on this Kings team for other reasons.
1 – He is a major money ticket – why would the Kings spend the money? he is a statistic all-star not a franchise player. He plays fully within his game, not the teams’ game. He does not make his teammates better.
2 – He is not great at creating his own shot
3- He is not much of a defender
4 – If he teamed with Al Jefferson, the combination of their black hole-edness would make a basketball completely disappear
5- He has had at least 3 major surgeries – the cat may have 9 injury lives – or just the 3 he used up
6 – what Pookey says.
Amar'e Stoudemire is a physical specimen
who would instantly improve this team, a la the acquisition of Chris Webber. But I haven’t heard of this trade happening and Phoenix would be a bunch of idiots if they did.
You're an idiot.

Napes, you're a fool.
It’s precisely because he is a Physical Specimen that he is so lousy. He is an underacheiver. Chris Webber could underacheive and still be a FORCE. And Webber was not a FORCE enough and Am I a Stud Or Am I is no Chris Webber. Webber could have been one of the ten best players ever to play basketball. Instead he will need a lot of good will to get into the Hall. Why would anyone want to put themselves through a Poor Man’s Chris Webber?

I'm not sure a whole lot of teams want Amare right now
It is very possible if he has a good agent he will not opt out & collect his $17 mil next season. Maybe GP doesn’t like the Tyreke/KM pairing & the Maloofs are tired of losing after our moderate success. I have been on & off the Amare bandwagon & now am currently off but if GP feels he is the perfect fit then I might be back on. Is it possible J-Rich might somehow come with Amare? I would be for taking him if phoenix takes Noce. If all else fails & Amare leaves it will give us cap space. Not the best thing for me but oh well I guess. If Amare comes here & excels I could easily see us resigning him for less then he thought he was going to get a year or 2 ago. 3 years $36 mil or 5 years $45 mil if he wants a longer deal. That is KM money & he is far better. I think a lot of players are going to get a rude awakening. Like Joe Johnson(who just turned down 4 yrs $60 mil) Amare, & Boozer. The only players getting max money are Lebron, Wade, & Bosh. Period. End of discussion.

Let's use the 3 strikes test for Amare
1) Almost six straight years of declining production…check
2) Does nothing perceptibly better than when he came into the league except shoot jumpers, which he loves to do but still isn’t particularly good at…check
3) Is going to cost someone a huge pile of money…check
We don’t want Stoudamire for what he’s going to cost, both in terms of assets and dollars. Just say no.

Petrie keeps things close to the vest
I think it is more likely that rumors like these come from other management personnel other than Petrie. No one knows what that man is going to do except that it will be an intelligent move. Petrie says “hay OB’s Dad, can you check out what the Suns are willing to take in exchange for Amare?” And this turns into rumors that the Kings want said Amare when in fact Petrie is only adding to his knowledge base so that when other acquisitions become available that he really wants to land he will have the means and know how to get 3 and 4 team trade deals done, if need be.
Martin isn’t going anywhere. We have Reke, Martin, and Casspi to deal the offensive damage going forward. Our 4 and 5 only need to be marginally better than they are now on the offensive end. We need defensive upgrades. Amare is not a defensive upgrade.

This sounds like a great idea
it gives us the chance to trade for one of the single most talented players of this generation. The trade off is that he’s a total underacheiver with a shite attitude that’ll probably destroy our team’s chemistry
www.mancancook.net
You always have to raise your eyebrows
when a team is desperately trying to trade one of the best power forwards in the league. Until you realize Steve Kerr is making the decisions. I am not totally for or against Amare but just to play devils advocate. Wasn’t Pau Gasol considered a soft underachiever in Memphis? Don’t give me that crap about the Griz knowing Marc would be good because they didn’t, It was a pure salary dump.
I love beating dead horses.
Amaré needs to go to Dallas. That is his destiny.
Watch Cuban. This is his backup plan. His ideal plan would be to get Kev from us, but they have nothing the Kings need. Amaré and Nowitzki, trying to share the ball. See what hilarity ensues!

less likely to leave a mark
you can wash the pillowcase easier than wiping blood off the wall, less wall dents as well
The negatives:
it takes longer to make the memory of what you read go away

Amare plays exactly 0 defense.
Perhaps it’s an OK rental, and he does board some, but what’s the point of getting a big who can’t/doesn’t defend?
Just curious
What are we measuring defense with? If it’s the eyeball test, I’m fine with that. If we’re using 82games.com’s opponent’s PER rankings, Amare has put up 19.0 this year and 15.2 last year. For comparison, Emeka Okafor has put up 21.1 this year and 17.6 last year.

One point to remember
Geoff Petrie doesn’t spend the lion’s share of his cap space on defensive players…he spends it on guys that can put the ball in the hole.
In my opinion, a guy like Amaré Stoudemire is right in his wheelhouse. However, he isn’t going to give away the farm for him either.
"When you look at him, you say: 'Holy God.'" - Pete Carril on Tyreke Evans
I think PHX is trying to do this deal
KMart,Noc,K9 & Armstrong for Stoudemire & Richardson
17mil for Kmart & Noc instead of 14mil for Richardson next year, if Stoudemire opts out
I don't like this deal
you are trading KMart for JRich.
That said, I would love to have JRich on the Kings, he plays D and has a nice offensive game. His ball handing is poor and his decision making only fair. But not at anything more than the MLE.

"When you look at him, you say: 'Holy God.'" - Pete Carril on Tyreke Evans
He might have felt that way last year
before his stock started falling. The guy said he would play for the freakin Nets becauase “they are a good young team” Amare is going where the money is & no way someone gives him max money so his best bet would be to stick around. If you think his stock hasn’t dropped then how come he hasn’t been traded yet? 2 seasons ago all teams would be lining up to get him trading 1/2 their team.
