I watched only bits and pieces of this game so here are my observations based on what I saw and the box score

- Note to Mr. Petrie: If you don’t get an interior defender to improve the team’s overall D then you just can’t win games. Letting the Suns drop nearly 40 points in the first quarter is unacceptable.

- Early on Tyreke reminded me of Chris Paul a little bit. He drove to the rim and made some good crisp passes to the open man: Kevin from just inside the arc, Spencer for a 15 footer, Omri for a three, and one more that I can’t remember. And the only one that fell was Kevin’s. Tyreke should’ve had 4 assists within the first 2 minutes but only had 4 assists all game. This is how I know that the rumors of guys being made because he’s a ball hog are completely false. He wants to be a true PG but the others just won’t let him because they won’t hit shots consistently.

- 10 assists? Really?

- At this point of the season I’m just going to enjoy the little things and look forward to the draft. I’m okay if we lose. I hope we can make it to 25 wins, and I’m sure we will. But, it’s not worth getting worked up over. These guys are losing because they are young and inconsistent. We have talented guys. They just need to develop and get better. So fuck it, bring on a lottery pick and let me watch more Donte Greene going for 31/7/2

I am with you on all of your points.

I wasn’t expecting to win, so this is not going to bum me out for the next day or so. They played a great team and got a lot of valuable experience. I am with vfettke, I am just going to enjoy the little things. Donte was the positive bright spot. Westphal had a lot of good things to say about him. In terms of Donte’s progess, “(He) has probably made further (progress) than anyone else this year.” That is very high praise. We just need to be supportive of the progress our guys get, because that will help them to be better and more competitive players in the future.

If Evans can get his jump shot better, then I’d say yes.

by Dub_TC on Feb 6, 2010 6:51 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah this is tough.

Donte shot a bunch of air balls and still had a great night. I really think he could have his best chance of being a star at the Power spot. These days more and more 4’s can shoot the three and are a little smaller and qiucker. I think Casspi is going to be a really good Small Forward in this league no matter what. He could be better than Peja or The Turkish MJ. And Peja and Torkoglu have had really solid careers. Casspi is tougher than Stojakovic and shoots better than Hedo did at this stage. Casspi is probabaly tougher than Hedo for that matter. I know I’m grasping at straws, but what else can you do after a game like this.

by Can'tSufferFools on Feb 5, 2010 10:08 PM PST reply actions

I don't see this as grasping at straws. You are making an objective assessment of players' strengths.

You heard what the coach said about the players’ passion, “No, no, no. Never lose that.” At this point we need to be thinking of the team’s development and appreciate the growth in the players. It is important that they continue to have good team chemistry.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

checking out his stats for this year ....

when he takes less than 10 shots a game … he averages 5.8 points a game
when he takes more than 10 shots a game …. he averages 26.6 points per game

so you do have a point about shooting his way out of his slump

tonight for Iggy in road win. Plug in a big guard who can rebound, and your team can get away with a high post center like Spencer, and play Donte at the ‘4’ although he is not a big rebounder. We need to get more athletic players around Tyreke, and Iggy is perfect fit.

And for all those who fall into conventional thinking regarding Amare, and this consensus notion that he is a slacker who doesn’t want to defend, open your eyes. Amare is a beast. Quit harping on what he can’t do so well, and respect what he can do. Amare is explosive scorer that JT will never be, and he plays with swagger that elevates his teammates.

Don't try to make Tyreke an NBA Shooting Guard.

I bristle when I hear people suggest Tyreke would be a better basketball player if he played off a Legit Point Guard. I really believe Evans has to be a Point Guard to be a true force in this league. He’ll be awsome no matter what but, he really needs the ball in his hands to be at his best. For those of you who think he was playing the 2 when he started with Beno, he didn’t. beno was playing the 2. I don’t wan’t another Joe Johnson, Brandon Roy, Andre Iguodala. I wan’t a new prototype Point Guard. He can’t be Magic Johnson, but I would sure like him to try. I don’t want him getting stuck in Limbo like Dwayne Wade. Tyreke, stay at the 1 please. P.S. Ray Allen, Redd, pure shooters belong at the shooting guard position. And don’t bring up Michael Jordan. He’s an anomaly. Beside’s I don’t think Reke has the hops to be a truly great shooting guard. We know for a fact he doesn’t have the hops of even your average 2guard. New Prototype Next Generation Point Guard, Please.

by Can'tSufferFools on Feb 5, 2010 10:21 PM PST reply actions

he just needs to be on the floor with another guard who can shoot decently and pass

Wade and Kobe both dominate the ball and so should Evans. Chemistry-wise Evans has worked well Beno (another ball handler who can pass and shoot).

You said Webber was not quite good enough. Meaning what, exactly? Physically not good enough? You know, because his knee gave out? Mentally not good enough? Because of a timeout he called when he was 20 years old?

What does “not quite good enough” mean, if not being a reference to him not being able to lead Sacramento to a title?

We’ll be pretty damned lucky if we ever get a player of Webber’s caliber to play for the Kings again. I just hope we are lucky someday, and some day soon.

Donté scoring 30? It is nice to have options.

Something is definitely up with Kevin. Maybe he wants to be traded.

Tyreke might need to take on even more of a leadership role to shake these guys up. His teammates need to be afraid to let him down. Missing shots he set up for you should not be tolerated.

Someone needs to learn how to talk on defense, and everyone needs to practice defending the pick and roll. Looking right at you, Westphal. This is your one goal for the rest of the season.

by wallywagon11 on Feb 5, 2010 11:04 PM PST up reply actions

He's super quiet, but

he’s more vocal on the floor. Player’s are just missing shots. The confidence has really been shaken. The meteoric start they had has kind of backfired. It made them think they were further ahead than they were and now they are a little dissapointed. The Thunder won 23 games last year and now they are 28 and 21 with basically the same roster. This is our first true year of a genuine rebuilding effort. we can still win 30 games this year but people were only projecting 20 to 25 anyway. It’s not any kind of emergency. We are right on schedule as far as I’m concerened. With two of our rookies starting in the rookie all-star game, we’ve got a lot to look forward to, I believe.

Yes, at end of 3rd....

down by over 25 and then making foolish fouls/turnovers seems to be the ‘boooing point’

and not like crash into but run in to like in front of a coffee shop while four feet away someone was throwing down a dunk and they looked like the were sharing a joint.

Mostly negative thoughts from section 218

Only Spencer Hawes can make the worse Lopez brother look like Dwight Howard.

Kevin starting to remind me of Baby Brad last year. He’s just moping around, giving up when things start to go south. His intensity was non-existent tonight and it does affect the team when your co-franchise guy is waving the white flag every other game. Tyreke has never done that once this year.

Steve Nash is incredible. I don’t think there’s a deadlier offensive player right know, Lebron included. How do you guard the guy?

Donte was very impressive tonight. Did a decent job on STAT defensively and his offensive game is really coming along.

random

but about 8 years ago i ended up accidentally passing on going out to dinner with Nash, Shawn Bradley, Peja, and Dirk. Had a friend in college (he was apparantly a family friend of Nash) who I planned on getting a ride from Sacramento back to San Jose on a sunday. I found out that he was not leaving until something like midnight because he wanted to go to the Kings game and head back afterwards. He suggested i should go to the game with him, he had an extra ticket. My dumb ass was worried about an exam and decided to leave in the morning on the Amtrak. Didn’t mention anything to me about the fact that he was hanging out with frickin Nash.

I really don't know what to say

I’m extremely confused about tonight. It’s one of those things where I had no idea what happened. I don’t know how to explain our defense, I don’t know how to explain our offense. Let’s try writing something and see what works:

Our defense is terrible. Our pick and roll defense even worse.

We need a big that will help our interior D and rebounding. We also need better team defense.

What’s worse than our defense? Some guy actually bought a Kings jersey and put the last name “Iverson” on the back of it.

At this very moment, the Suns have a better backcourt than the Kings. They also have a better frontcourt.

Kevin Martin needs to wake the f up. Where is the guy that dunked on Greg Oden? He couldn’t even dunk on Doran “don’t call me Frodo” Dragic tonight.

On that note, we need a better offensive scheme. I don’t even know what we are running right now.

The players need to step up. The coaching staff needs to really step up.

Reke is special. I’m thankful for that guy.

Steve Nash has been special for years and at 36 he’s still GREAT. I’m thankful for being able to see him play. (Btw, the 30 footer to stop the Kings run was the dagger, yes a 3rd quarter dagger! Game ended right there)

If anyone still thinks we need someone like Amare, watch him play defense. Or should I say watch him not play defense?

For the first time, for about 30 seconds, I questioned preaching patience. Then The Show happened

Donte Greene’s performance tonight is what makes this year different from last year. If you don’t get it, I’m sorry.

I will never boo my own team. I will also never leave before the final horn sounds. That’s a (personal) promise.

The Kings are young. The Kings are inconsistent. The Kings are bad. Deal with it.

I love this team.

The future begins now...

It's just not my style

and let me get something straight before someone comes in a complains. Everyone has the right to do whatever they please. They are paying customers and it’s their right to boo. I personally don’t agree with it. I just don’t think it’s the way to treat a young team like the one we have right now.

And I’m going one step further: I’m going to guess that someone will reply to this comment saying that these guys get pay millions of dollars and they deserve it.

I’ll stop there because like I said, it’s just a personal thing. We all handle things differently.

by TheFifthMookie on Feb 6, 2010 9:49 AM PST up reply actions

I agree

But the booing was triggered by a bonehead play that finished off a 22-3 run after a series of them left us with a 29-point deficit that had been 10 moments before.

You’re probably right, though, the fans need to support the team. At the same time, sometimes the effort lately seems questionable, and I think that’s what really got the fans riled.

Kings fans never boo with regularity--its a freaking hippie love fest in there.

tonight’s booing was a much needed dose of honesty
that will hopefully push players to try harder and the Maloofs to shake things up sooner by getting rid of Martin and some dead weight.
Excessive or knee-jerk booing of a young team = bad. But this is booing born from watching the same team click impressively earlier this season (and be called by ESPN one of the funnest teams to watch in basketball) continually sinking to become the worst again while also showing little effort in some cases.

this isnt a new age retreat. these people paid a lot of money to see subpar effort by millionaires known for whining and not even playing hard until the playoffs [why many people hate the NBA]. They shouldnt be patted on the heads by fanboys dreaming of John Wall. There’s no excuse, and during extreme low points, fans should boo in order to send a message to mgmt and players. they are the shareholders.

People who rule out booing are like the small town theater critics, for example, who practice the mommy advice, “if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all.” In other words, they are a totally useless and untrustworthy critic that in the end doesn’t help anyone.
That advice may work in personal relationships, but not here. This is a business, baby.

so you guessed right. Now when Martin is gone and Reke is at two, you’ll see why Im also right about that.

Trolls will be trolls wally

Don’t waste your time. Virginia Blue will be here when Kevin has bad games. you won’t hear from him when he has good games. VB will be here if/when Martin gets traded to rub it in your face. He won’t say anything after the trade deadline if Martin is still here. That’s what trolls do, it just takes time getting used to it.

And don’t even worry. I’m not offended whatsoever. I predicted this would happen, didn’t I?

He makes one good point, ed

In business, you have 2 types of unhappy customers. The ones who speak up and tell you that your product is bad, or the passive ones that say nothing but leave and never come back again. As a business man, you want everyone to be happy with the service, so although you don’t want customers to voice their disapproval, you’d rather have them speak up so you can do something to make them satisfied, rather than have them walk away never to return.

While I undersand that HT

Customers here may not be the smartests decision makers. I would hope that the FO is not looking for more talent because people are booing but because they realize we simply need more telented players on this team. I don’t think they need people to boo the players to realize that.

I know it’s not your whole point, but if it was up to the fans, we would have Ricky Rubio (I was one of those fans), would’ve cut Donte Greene last year, and Jon Brockman would be our starting center. I trust the decision makers so I’m going to let them do their job. Especially one year removed from being the worst team in the league and while in the middle stages of the rebuilding process.

And while Virgina Blue may make some good points from time to time, he’s still a troll that only shows up when anything he says is proven right but isn’t here any other time. Unfortunately, I don’t respect the opinions of trolls but that’s a different conversation.

Well stated

And, while I have never been a advocate of “the customer is always right policy”, I am willing to listen and do what I can do to make them happy as long as it doesn’t hurt my business.

And, I like you, believe that the FO and Coaching Staff knows what’s wrong with the team. I can imagine, ( I believe it was Joe Maloof sitting in the tunnel with GP ) didn’t feel comfortable being at the game with fans booing. And, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Joe, GP & PW, having a discussion of some type after the game.

I think that's the balance that's tough to achieve
I am willing to listen and do what I can do to make them happy as long as it doesn’t hurt my business

Do you make a big move now that limits you financial flexibility in the future, to make the playoffs this year? Do you do that knowing that you’ll bring more people to the arena in the short term but knowing that in the long term you’ll be stuck in 6th-8th seed territory? I trust the front office to do what’s best for this team, unfortunately, that’s not always what the “fans” think its best.

This line of business is not like any other. Pro sports are a weird beast. I guess that’s why we love them so much.

Bigs and PG take time to develop. How many times have we heard that?

We have JT, Spencer, Tyreke, Sergio, and next drafts #1 pick (most likely another big). Now we can simple play all the youth and live with their inconsistency and mistakes, or bring in a stable big to fill in for a couple of years until the youth is ready to take over.

How they acquire that stablizing big, and how it will affect the bottom line is not within my ability to analyze. But, I am able to tell you that the Kings will not continue to draw customers with Spencer and JT as your dominent bigs. But, unless the FO can acquire help using up our expiring, the only talent I’d be willing to give up is Martin. Not that I don’t think that Martin is good for the team, it’s just that Spencer, JT, Donte, Casspi, have too much potential and frontcourt players are harder to come by than Shooters with weak defense.\

As far as making us a playoff team, I don’t think anyone we get will make us a playoff team, but if it did then we’d still have youth enough to grow into a contender without going through 2 more season of 24 wins.

I agree in principle with everything aside from your player personnel analysis.

I would never tell anyone who bought a ticket, or even sitting at home, that they can’t express whatever sentiment they choose. I just think the disappointment and frustration is borne from unrealistic expectations and an all-too typical inabilty to show patience.

If you really think this team is in a worse place than a year ago, boo away. But I sure as hell won’t ask your advice about basketball, filing my taxes, or what comes after “A, B, C…”

i don't think many people would argue you can't express yourself but i think if you do choose to express yourself in certain ways you open yourself up to other people's opinions

Obviously, yeah i wouldn’t tell anyone to stop booing but it does bug me, i’m not going to lie. Granted, a huge blowout at home is pretty darn understandable but i was pretty bothered hearing that there was booing going on in the Spurs game when it was a close and entertaining game. That to me is pretty frustrating to hear about.

Hopefully that booing will get through to GP's head

This team’s in need of some serious medical attention. If he’s just going to let it sit there and die, it will.

Booing is just plain rude.

If someone has a gripe with GP, send him a letter. Don’t boo at the players. Their hard work needs to be appreciated. If the players begin to feel that their work and effort isn’t appreciated by their fans, then they will lose the passion for the game that we all know and love. We do not want to break their spirit over a loss.
