Be honest

How long did you sit and play with this the first time? This is pretty damn awesome, I highly recommend everyone to go check it out and follow along with the walkthrough if you have the time (it doesn’t take too long, but there’s no way you won’t spend a good hour messing around with it after you’ve got it figured out).

Ziller, do you know what Drtg actually measures? It’s supposed to be some kind of Defense rating, but it has some surprising and counter-intuitive results (Steve Nash rates very high, Dwight Howard not so much); unless I’m reading that particular measure backwards, which would seem like a flawed valuation to me. In any case, I looked at Blocks and Rebounding to get an idea of defensive acumen (with much more predictable results).

Some basic results from players of particular interest: Dalembert shakes-out as a pretty darn good player, Tyrus Thomas does not (though obviously he has some issues with usage and coaching and whatnot). Go play with the graphs yourself though if to see what I’m talking about.

Also, this LeBron James guy seems to rate pretty high on just about any graph you can throw together. We should try to get him.

Think the Cavs would take expirings?

And maybe a protected #1? ;)

Regarding Drtg

I believe a lower Drtg shows a greater defensive ability. Look at it this way, a large Ortg might be 137 compared to a low Ortg of 80. So it stands to reason a lower Drtg is better because (as I assume) it measures the ability to stop an opponent. In other words, Ortg measures to ability to be an offensive force and measures the offensive output of the player noted. Drtg measures the ability of a player to be a defensive force (the average offensive force of other players against the noted player IS the Drtg of the noted player).

This is why you see Dwight Howard “high” with Ortg and “low” with Drtg. The higher a player’s Drtg the worse a defender they are because they “give up” that much offense.

I figured it had to be something like that

I just think that makes it harder to use that measurement in combination with other measurements (like in the magic graph in this article, for example) to get a good sense of what you’re actually seeing. Not that it doesn’t make sense, it just seems like kind of a messy rating, and in regards to this graph it seems a bit weird to throw-in a “golf score” with a bunch of “basketball scores”. Dah well, thanks for the clarification.

DRtg is like a golf score

Lower is better. (Points per 100 possessions allowed)

I guess I keep looking at the wrong stuff

Can someone explain to me statistically why Amare Stoudemire is a poor defender, but Samuel Dalembert is a good one? Unless I’m looking at the statistics incorrectly, they seem to be very similar in terms of defensive statistics.

Oh, I get it

I’m retarded. I was just looking at 82games.com’s opponents’ PER.

Interesting graph

I don’t quite understand USG%, so it doesn’t make as much sense to me.

Usage

Usage is the % of possessions a player utilizes while they’re on the court.

Kobe Bryant has the highest single-season usage rate

for the 2005-06 season when he had a ridiculous usage of 38.74%. That’s also the year where he averaged 35.4 points and scored 81 in a game.

i only remember that as the year

where the Lakers won 45 games with an 18 year old Bynum, Odom, Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, Brian Cook, Kwame Brown, Devean George, Luke Walton, Sasha, and Turiuf yet somehow it was all Kobe’s fault that team didn’t win more. Apparantly Smush needed more shots.

That team

Is the reason Kobe has the all-time Usage rate record.

Utilizes...

…meaning the % of possessions the L****s, for example, have where Kobe either shoots the ball or passes the ball for an assist/missed shot? How does that work for defensive stats? Is there a link I should be reading? I know I sound like a stat dumbass at the moment…I’m more experienced with advanced baseball statistics. I love advanced stats, but I like knowing what they mean and how to use them before attempting to do so in a discussion.

Very cool graph!

It is fun to see where everyone rates. Tyreke rates fairly high, but Kobe and DWade are significantly higher. John Salmons has been riding the pine a lot this season.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
