How about that Kevin Martin guy, huh?

He’s so weak mentally he didn’t do anything in overtime.

Just like coolcalt always saying, he hides in the clutch, he doesn’t come throuhg when it counts. What a dissapeari act?

And he never rebounds or passes the ball. He didn’t rebound his own miss and got the Kings the ball back there at the end. No sir.

Continue to hate, we’ll be here all day!

"one game"

Please. More game winners over the last 3 years than anyone on our team. I’d argue one slump does not make a career.

That was incredible

It took him a split second to recognize what he was doing and correct it.

by Slaaam on Feb 9, 2010 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

Kevin Martin is playing better team ball on offense, there's no denying that.

…but on defense, Kevin just stands around and watches his teammates 95% of the time- or sluggishly trails his man.

What’s curious is why so many people on this forum would claim he plays defense with heart (but just isn’t good at it).. That one play in overtime where K-mart aggressively stayed in front of his man (creating a missed shot)- THAT’S what even skinny guys are capable of. He rarely plays defense with that kind of intensity, but would be so effective if he did.

I don’t want to see him traded- I just want to see him put way more effort into defense. Offensively, I think he’ll come around as a team player.

So many people on this site are very sensitive about any kind of criticism or critique of Kevin; then again, a lot of people on this site used to say few teams would benefit from having Donte Greene, too.

I ain't your bro.

You come up with lame ass excuses as to why Martin is to blame for the losses. How about: The whole team has been struggling (and was before Martin returned), and then the losses continued after Martin was in the lineup.

It’s amazing that you people manage to keep your head on straight. If you want to criticize him for lack of defense or whatever, that’s fine. But to say that Tyreke learns from his mistake is a dumb churlish comment by someone who clearly lacks the ability to comprehend what it is he is watching.

don’t get it twisted…it’s a team game. i’m not blaming martin for shit but playin like kevin martin. i’ve watched tyreke learn from his mistakes. that denver game winner for example… a couple games before that he had the exact same situation come about and he forced the drive. next time he had the opportunity he went for the drive and when he seen it wasn’t their… he didn’t try to force it.. instead he took what he knew he could get…

…kevin will have the ball in crunch time… do his little peter pan up fake and not get the call. the next time.. same thing. it’s as if it hasn’t registered to him… “hey maybe i should try shooting”

by Gold Miner 916 on Feb 9, 2010 7:58 PM PST up reply actions

Answer

Tyreke has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA, thus far.

by CloudyEyes on Feb 10, 2010 3:58 AM PST up reply actions

Kevin was solid but let's not get carried away

he played within himself and got hot late. I give him credit…I like seeing 7-13 instead of 7-27. Tonight he was what he is…a good second fiddle. He didn’t try to be what he isn’t and what it has taken him 22 games to figure out. This team is better when he doesn’t try to dominate the game. He took smart unforced shots instead of volume shooting. We are a better team when Tyreke has the ball in his hands more than any other player and Kevin just fits in.

Let’s not get crazy though…he has had more disappearing acts in late game situations then he has had clutch moments.

Kevin is the opposite of a volume shooter.

He scores more with fewer shots than nearly anyone in the league.

by mayfieldcol on Feb 9, 2010 11:04 PM PST up reply actions

Kevin has had 2 games

in his entire career he shot 27 shots or more, and in one of those games he scored 48 points.

Yeah, I don't get it.

Like, I’m fine with the whole no-defense thing (even though at the beginning of the season he was talking about how Thorpe was only concerned with his defense) and the whole skinny thing (because fast players can’t be skinny, apparently), but that’s just wrong.

He takes more shots per game than. . .

It depends

On the team we are playing. That lineup will do well against many lineups in the league, but sometimes players like Spencer can give us a better mismatch to exploit, like when we play the Lakers. The real question remains
how will Francisco Garcia fit into the picture once he comes back.

by eaglezuke on Feb 9, 2010 7:36 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I love it. I also love what a bench mob it leaves.

Spencer, Brockman, Udoka, Beno, Sergio off the bench, with bits of May mixed in.

I loved back in the day when Adelman would leave just one starter, usually Webber or Vlade in, and let the bench just come in and completely throw the other team off balance. I would love to see that happen now.

I honestly don't know if I'm being sarcastic or not.

I feel that on many nights Hawes either doesn’t bring it, or starts slow or whatever. PW then goes in search of an energy player. He brings in JT or Brockman or Udoka or whomever and Hawes winds up sitting on the bench. Hawes has been so up and down this season I don’t know what to expect from night to night.

WIth the 1st pick you'd have to.

We’re probably not getting it and we already have Reke who is similar to Wall. So a big with huge upside is next.

is Kings getting the 2nd pick through a fortuitous bounce of the ping pong balls and picking Favors, that way there’s no what-ifs about Wall and we can go on our merry way with a Huge Upside guy who is also a need.

2 Kings with double-doubles (Reke and JT) and Omri was 1 board away, with Donté being 2 boards away.

were Noc and Sergio. Beno and Spence didn’t get burn, but everyone else contributed. Omri could have had 30 if his 3s were falling. Donté had a couple bonehead plays, but a great game overall. Gotta love his potential. I get the feeling he could be a 20 PPG scorer as soon as next year.

If Aykis is right (which as an editor of this fine blog, I assume he will be) having three potent scorers in Tyreke, KMart, and Donte will be pretty awesome next year. Now lets draft Demarcus Cousins and call it a day.

I'm proud that he's correcting his mistakes

Not as many ill-chosen three point shots, better defense.

One thing he’s going to need to learn more in my opinion is to stay on his feet when he has the ball.

by Slaaam on Feb 9, 2010 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

I was on the Donté has great potential wagon.

But I will admit that I wanted him to stop shooting 3s. He’s proven to be quite good at it this year, and I can see him hovering around 40% for the rest of his career, and that’s good for a 3 point shooter.

Right now my Rashard Lewis comparison is holding up, but he’s throwing in great defense as well. I don’t think any of us thought he’d be this good on that end of the court. Like a Lewis/Josh Smith hybrid.

I like the idea behind it, but I hate the specific implementation of PER chosen by Hollinger: “Alright, I’m going to fiddle around and randomly add weights to different statistics till I get a nice correlation between the stat I produce and what I view as quality players. Then I’m going to base my entire career off of it.”

I didn’t say it was irrelevant, I just don’t like it’s specific implementation. I would like something very similar to it if the ratios for the constants were more scientifically determined.

I use PER all the time. But I hate it. It’s like my college car – didn’t have time to fix it, didn’t have the money to get a batter one, so I just used it, and it got me where I needed to go, just not as well as I would have preferred.

Seattle agreed to it because of the big TPE they got from Orlando. They used that TPE to acquire Kurt Thomas and 2 draft picks, and later by trading Thomas to the Spurs for another pick.

Otis Smith is a crafty motherucker.

Dude got Ryan Anderson and Vince Carter for Courtney Lee, got Dallas to drop the ball on Bass and still picked up Gortat. He still has his picks in an error when good teams get rid of them, and made some great draft decisions.

The dude knows what is up. Which makes the Rashard move even more confusing. Like, we’re all missing something. Either Lewis wanted the money to be happy, or Otis Smith thinks that sixth year expiring contract would be more useful, I have no idea.

Great win

From the point where it was 98-83 in the 4th qtr., the Kings went on a 35-16 run to close out the game. They took advantage of the Knicks misses, fought through mistakes that could’ve cost them the game during that run and never gave up. Great win for the Kings.

No, actually. Tagalog is a whole different language.

But we do use a lot of Spanish words in our everyday conversation. A lot of English words too. “Sanwits” (sandwich) is accepted as a Tagalog word.

And there’s a dialect in Mindanao called Chavacano, which people term as “broken Spanish”. That’s really close to Spanish. Some other dialects also borrow heavily from Spanish.

I didn't watch the Kings during the Mitch Richmond era so forgive me if I am wrong

but the Kings have never had a player who could or would put the team on his back in the 4th quarter. Someone who when the chips are down he says “F$ck it I’m going to win this game” Tyreke is that guy. We as fans are very lucky to have him. IMO there are very few players in the league who are like that every night. Kobe, Lebron, & Wade. You can make some arguments for a few more players like Brandon Roy or Joe Johnson. I am not talking about a clutch guy like Robert Horry who can come in & hit a couple of 3’s at the end of games or a Bibby. These guys are a different breed. As good as Nash, KG, CP3, & Paul Pierce are I wouldn’t trade Tyreke for any of those guys even in their prime. Lebron wasn’t even like this in his rookie year. Or second year. I’m not talking about stats I’m talkin about BALLS. Big balls, massive stones, cajones, balls of steel, brass balls. Call it what you want but he has them.

I love beating dead horses.

A much needed win for the team

And boy, the Knicks have to be kicking themselves for letting that one get away…but no apologies, a win is a win. Especially on the road.

Nice to see Kevin get hot and make a few shots. Hopefully, he’s finding that shooting stroke. Even better, I think we saw a glimpse of what the Kings are hoping from that backcourt – Tyreke penetrating at will, and alternately Kevin stretching out the defense.

It’s one game, against a bad team…but they have to start somewhere right?

I’m not even implying we didn’t earn this through effort, but a better team likely beats us going away.

Ok, so now for some more calm observations

It was just the Knicks, it was just one win, and it was just one good showing by Kevin. Still a good win because it was on the road and because it was a team win with the best players taking over when they needed to (Reke in the 4th, Speed in Ot). Let’s hope the young guys can build on this and continue working towards consistency.

Big game tomorrow. A win could go long ways towards building confidence in this group and its individual member, really. It’s not like we’re going to start winning more games, we’re still not very good, but hopefully a couple more Ws can get this team back to playing teams close and reminding everyone why there’s so much hopefot the future.

There are people who act like the Blazers taking Sam Bowie derailed the Blazers long term because of not taking Jordan.

Of course, what the Blazers really needed was a Barkley type player. Whether it would have worked is anyone’s guess, but that’s what they needed.

I’m very disappointed in the purple uniforms, honestly. Everyone fell in love with the team at a time when their road jerseys were black. Changing them completely changed the identity of the team on the road. It was a bad change. I’d love to see the results of a poll regarding the color of the road uniforms on kings.com. I bet it’d be overwhelmingly in favor of black road uniforms.

2008 NBA Draft: 6 F/C or Cs drafted in the 1st round. 1 is a star already (Brook Lopez), 3 are up and comers (JT, Hibbert, McGee) and 2 don’t see much time (Ajinca, Koufos)

Donte at the 4?

I loved the lineup at the end of the game and even the ebb and flow of the substitutions to that point.

I thought the key stretch was those two Donte threes sandwiched around the Tyreke drive after the Knicks had pushed the lead to 15. Without that we’re sputtering into the close and there’s no OT.

Tyreke, Kmart, Omri, Donte at the 4, JT (or Spencer if he had been the hot one of the two). Nocioni still getting some minutes. Sergio and Brockman getting some energy minutes. Ime doing his defensive stopper in place of Kmart thing.

Beno and Spencer were the odd men out. And maybe that’s the way it needs to be.

I don’t know if that lineup will consistently work, but Donte needs to be on the floor and at the 4, where he can create some mismatches and spread the floor. Omri needs to be on the floor. And maybe Kmart needs to be on the floor whether he is sleepwalking or not so he can play his way into the game.

I also loved how Tyreke was having a terrible game until it was time to take it over.

That was a great win on the road over a crappy team, but a real shot in the arm for a team that really needed it. And maybe it can bring back some memories of what they were doing right earlier in the season, and it will carry over to a better second half. I sure hope so, because a team playing like they did tonight is a team we can believe in.

Also, notice Greene's fouling trouble tonight

you put him in situations where he has to defend those bigs, he’s going to end up playing alot less, no?
Also, Boozer isn’t a beast in the paint in terms of blocking shots, so it won’t be as effective to draw him out. He’s a good post defender, but if that’s the case then won’t he just be switched defensively to the Kings’ post player?

Boozer and Okur

One of them is going to have to cover Donte, and neither one has the speed. Donte might actually be better to cover Okur since he likes to shoot threes.

Donte would also be a natural to cover guys like Bargnani. Didn’t see the Raptors game, did Donte ever get that chance?

The Kevin Martin Thing

Here’s the angle that no-one seems to be presenting on the KMart vs. Napear situation. It’s obvious to me that Napear is trying to spark something in KMart, as he’s a smart enough guy and knowledgeable enough to know what a productive KMart can mean to this team. I’ll even take it further and say that given how intertwined Napear is with the organization, that his blatant attack on Kevin did not come as a surprise to some people at the Kings, and was probably approved by them with the hope that it would have the desired effect.

He did exactly the same thing to Beno last year.

Giving Noc and K-9 to the Bulls, TT goes to the Kings, Hinrich goes to the Lakers.

Just main pieces but something like that?

I was heading home from class later in the spring of 2006

and in front of me i notice it’s Morrison’s truck. He’s not driving, he is in the back with two other guys and I am stuck driving behind them on Cincinnati street which goes through campus.

Anyway going about 10 mph behind them, going over speed bumps and minding my business all of a sudden all three guys (including Morrison) whip out giant bags of cheetos. Huge bags in each hand. And they start just straight up chucking bags of cheetos at a bunch of freshman girls walking out of the dorms and going to class

Few can shoot it like Kevin can. As Kevin & Reke figure each other out some, and I see signs of that already honestly, that’s going to make Kevin more valuable to the Kings IMO.

You need so many things to be successful.

Interior and perimeter defense. Shot Blocking, rebounding, the ability to create turnovers. You need to have shooters, guys who can get to the FT line, guys who can shoot the mid range game as well as from the deep perimeter (Mid Range is not 20 footers btw—it’s more of 8-16 ft), guys who can score at the basket consistently both on the block and on the drive, guys who can score with the ball in their hands, guys who can score without the ball in their hands.

The Kings have some of that, and need some of that. Mostly what they need is interior defense, and personal growth from the young talent. This core is already here. All that is really missing is a real strong defensive presence.

actually felt that way with the Utah game too

I definitely started as a Tyreke NaPG. Other than the stuff Hightop alludes to (which can either show growing pains or just situations with coaching) about assists in the paint, I am pretty darn happy with the situation

If that's the biggest aspect of Reke's game from the passing standpoint that you have to be worried about

Reke is passing the ball a lot better

He still rekes as an outside shooter, but maybe he can shoot 50,000 threes in the offseason and come back as Pete Maravich next season.

I thought Tyreke got away with at least two offensive fouls tonight trying to push Al Harrington out of his way. Actually it was more of a straightarm.

Sometimes those wide open shots are the hardest to make. I remember Nocioni having a similar shot from the other side of the floor to win a game early in the season when his guy fell down, but he just tried to be too perfect with the shot.
