Our next target Big?

I know we're all longing to get another PF/C into the rotation with a more defensive mindset.  Before the trade deadline there was a lot of talk about finding a guy like Okafor or Dalembert to fit into our roster.  Instead we grabbed Landry and got some much needed clutch and post scoring but we still have that hole to fill.  So for the off season when we aren't able to lure Chris Bosh to the Kings who else can we go after?

My pick is Serge Ibaka.  I've followed him somewhat over the year and saw him play some extended minutes last night as OKC blew out the raptors.  To me he's basically a young Dalembert w/ better lateral quickness and decent midrange jumper. 6'10" with a looong wingspan.  Keep an eye out for him when we play OKC.

Positives: great shot blocker, above avg rebounder, 20 y/o rookie w/ upside, high motor, good offensive mechanics to build on

Negatives: maybe he doesn't blow up w/ starters minutes

His Per 36 min

11.7pts 10.6rbs 2.4 blks 52%fg

Serge Ibaka vs Lakers (11.22.2009) (via DejanBody)

If he's as good as I'm making him out to be why might OKC let him go?  They probably won't since much like us they need another solid big man but OKC is already leading the league in opp FG%.  They might be interested in a solid less raw big w/ a better offensive game.  OKC...meet Jason Thompson.  Straight up.

Who's your realistic target Big?

Don't sign anyone

Draft Whiteside. He’s a 7 footer who specializes in blocking shots and getting defensive rebounds. People are comparing him to a young Marcus Camby. That is exactly the kind of player we need.

The free agents of 2010 are going to be way to expensive because too many teams with money to burn. Stay away from this (unless we can get Bosh of course) and save the cap space until 2011 or just use it to resign our own players.

If man is 5 and the devil is 6 than Eric Maynor is a freakin 19!

The rumor out of Huntington

Is that Whiteside will probably not declare for the draft this year.

I don’t have a link at this time.
(My father and mother are both Marshall Alum’s and we as a family have followed Marshall for YEARS) everything we have heard (from the coaching/marshall super fans) is that Whiteside may prefer to stay in college and go higher in the draft NEXT year.

And while I would Love him to play in SAC. He is SUPER raw and would be glued to the bench/D-League his first season (barring Injuries).

He's suddenly in the top ten though

If it looks like he’ll be in that range come may I’d guess he comes out. I did catch one of his games and he impressed me, a little skinny but developing a lot of skills.

Overall

He will be a very good PROJECT.

Not someone to bet the farm on IMO (with a top 10 pick). But worth a late lottery/firstround pick this year. The reason I say this is Marshall plays in Conference USA not exactly a big heavy conference so the level of competition he faces night in night out is not as steep as say the Big East/SEC Petrie has had luck drafting decent big-men out of small conference schools previously (JT) and weak big-man conferences (Hawes) and both have had a Level of success in the league.

But drafting Whiteside would mean waiting on him for at least a season maybe two. I’m not saying that we do not have that kind of time (I expect in two seasons we will be competing for the playoffs) but we should all understand that if we draft ANOTHER big we absolutely have to be patient with him.

I should also note that

If Petrie says Whiteside is the guy then I trust him.

Also, I am a big Whiteside fan but look at Thabeet. No impact for a middling/decent team this season and beaten out of his backup-center role by a player most thought would not even be in the league at this time next year.

I agree and I like the type of player whiteside is...

but he’s definitely a risky pick. You see him projected anywhere from 5th to 20th on a lot of draft boards. JT dominated a small league and he seems to be a fringe starter at this point. Shot blocking should translate to the NBA better than scoring. Whiteside has more raw ability than JT but I’d like to see him go up against better players. He should develop, but like you’re saying it could be years before that happens.

the other rumor is he WILL declare because...

of CBA being in question next year. Most GMs except a strong class of many players declaring early to get in under current CBA rules. The new CBA will certainly squeeze players tighter, probably limit rookie contracts more.

I now have some hope

Several games ago I wanted a new starting center. Spence has given me some hope these last few games. I agree, a good back up shot blocking center who can rebound would be a nice edition.
With the edition of Landry and the play of Spence of late, I wonder what JT’s role with be us in the future.
If Spence keeps playing the way he has, I think the position is his unless Bosh somehow comes here, but do not count on that. If he regresses, the center issue will need revisiting.

An impressive level of athleticism and a real nose for the ball.

I’d need to see more before thinking about trades, but he looks like a real prospect for OKC.

OKC will probably be looking for a Center rather than a backup PF

JT hasn’t shown to be a very good center yet. With Thomas’s and Harprings contracts expiring, and only $40M in contracts, they can probably do better in the FA market then giving away a cheap but promising rookie.

Krstic and Collison’s contract are expiring nest season, and I’m not sure how well BJ Mullens is progressing. He was in the D-League for a while. So, I think Center is their top priority.

At this point

I don’t even know what’s our biggest need, or hell, for that matter, I don’t even know what we have now. Is this new Spencer Hawes here to stay? Is Landry going to get better? How’s JT fitting into this puzzle? Do we need a starting big man or a backup who can just concentrate in rebounding, playing D, and blocking shots?

We also still need a G to pair with Tyreke (as good as Beno’s been, I don’t think he’s the starter we need). So in the draft, do we go for a big or a G? How about drafting down, getting rid of a bad contratc and picking up a defensive big? Or should just get a G and use the money to get a big?

So many scenarios and so many questions for this team that I don’t even know where to start. I’m hoping the next 20+ games can give us a better idea of what we have and what we need.

You're right, still a lot of sorting out to do...

and by no means am I trying to say we’re 1 shot blocking/rebounding big away from competing, but I think that’s our most glaring weakness at the moment.

We’re 4th in giving up the most points, 22nd in defending the paint and 8th worst in opp fg%. We we’re actually one of the better rebounding teams in the league but we haven’t out rebounded an opponent since we traded for Landry. I think the offense will come as players and chemistry improve but unless we get some new blood or a defensive minded coach the defensive will stay about the same.

It will be interesting to see what type of player we draft this year.

by ucla06 on Mar 1, 2010 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely

I’m very excited about all the options we have and I’m actually a bit anxious to see what the next step is. Your post just gave me a chance to write some things I’ve been thinking about lately.

Like kfan said up there, we do need more stars so my dilemma kinda simplified. We go for the best guy we can get in the draft and go from there. Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins, whoever that guy is, we pick him up and go from there.

anyone else think that a trade of Spencer or JT is near

I think Carl is a piece that helps but is far from the final for the front court. I could see one of our young bigs being traded for a more accomplished big. The 3 big rotation now is just not going to cut it even if JT and Spencer make big strides and shot blocking rebounder would be a key addition.

by morecasspi on Mar 1, 2010 9:18 PM PST reply actions

lottery, draft and FA availability first

by betweentheeyes on Mar 1, 2010 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed.

I don’t think Carl was intended to be the piece that would complete the front court. I also can see one of our young bigs being traded for a more accomplished big. It will probably be a trade of either Spencer or JT. Carl Landry is consistent, so I expect that he will be a keeper. Consistency of play may play an important part in the decision, if it comes down to trading Spencer or JT.

It's true, like ed said I have no idea what we have anymore.

If Spencer is the real deal(I can’t even believe I am thinking this after a few solid games) then I would say Tyrus Thomas(read my sig) would be perfect next to him. Move Landry to 1st big off the bench & trade JT. David Lee would also be great next to Hawes. He is a GREAT rebounder & a 20pt scorer. He is not a shotblocker but he is a good man to man defender. Again you would have to move Landry to the bench but he would still get major minutes.Or you draft Cousins he would also be great next to Spencer. We would have a Bynum/Gasol type front court. Again this all depends on Spencer. If Spencer is not the answer then that changes everything. Then you have to find a center to play with Landry. TT still might work at center but that would be a very undersized front court. Cousins would be nice with Landry but who knows if we’ll be in position to draft him. Fesenko will be a restricted free agent I think but I don’t know much about him.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Mar 1, 2010 10:12 PM PST reply actions

A little more

Spencer can play PF & C. JT can only play PF he has been terrible center. You have to factor in this along with the fact that Spencer is more offensivley skilled, a better defender, & shotblocker. So if you like Landry like I do then JT is the odd man out. Which means you have to either find a center to play with Landry, a PF to play with Spencer, or a center to play with both.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Mar 1, 2010 10:23 PM PST up reply actions

So, basicly we need another PF or Center.

So, do we get another undeveloed one in the draft and wait until he finds his way? Or, do we get one in the FA market. Or, do we get one of each? Decisions, decisions, decisions.

by Slam_Dunk on Mar 2, 2010 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

It's tough

IMO Cousins has the NBA game but not the mentality. Favors has the mentality but not the game yet. Tyrus Thomas can put up similar numbers & have the same presence as Okafor for 1/2 the price. He is also younger. I really don’t like Dalembert. He would be ok but I don’t see him as the long term answer. Maybe just a one season rental. Gortat gets a lot of love but how do we really know how he would play with increased minutes & an increased roll. I have only seen him play for a few minutes at a time & he didn’t impress me very much. He looks like a good back-up though. As a third big he might be ok. David Lee is a legit 20 & 10 guy & IMO he is worth $10 million per easy. He plays better defense than an Amare or Boozer while putting up the same numbers. He is not a “defensive presence” in the sense that a Dalembert/Okafor/TT is but more of a man to man defender like Carl Landry or K9(woof). IMO TT at $7 million per would be first on my list or David Lee at $10 million per.If you have the chance to draft Cousins or Favors you also do that & trade JT possibly in a sign & trade with NY or Charlotte for TT or Lee.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Mar 2, 2010 10:08 AM PST up reply actions

cousin's sounds lazy and unmotivated....

has an nba ready body…but I’d rather stay away from a guy like this. He could be a star but just as easily an early NBA burnout once he gets paid. Favors seems like he plays with more intensity and has more athletic ability.

A guy like Whiteside would obviously be ideal but he plays against such weak competition I’d rather him stay in college so we have more data to go off of.

Okafor/Dalembert/Gortat...

One thing that should be remembered in this conversation is that the KIngs have cap room and some teams will be looking to lower their payroll. That could mean a prime player at a bargain price (a 2nd round pick or Dorsey or someone like JT if you really liked the guy), depending on how how many teams have substantial cap room once the free agents start signing.

I think in the right environment, he can be a consistent scorer, rebounder and shot blocker. Not spectacular, but still very good.
He’s getting more and more minutes in Phoenix though, he won’t come very cheap.
