Preview: Blazers at Kings
THE SCOUTING REPORT
Here's HighTops:
I know it’s only been a week but for those who might have forgotten here’s a recap.
The Kings started the 4th down by 11 pts. With a line up of J.T., May, Donte, Cisco and Evans, the Kings made a run to get back in the game. With 7:22 left and the game tied 74-74, Paul Westphal substituted Hawes and Landry in for J.T. and May. Things went downhill after that. Evans had a lay-up blocked by Camby, Greene missed a 3, Evans missed a 3, we turned over the ball on a shot clock violation, Hawes missed a jump shot, then finally Cisco made a running hook at 4:39. But Camby made a jumper and a tip-in, and Roy made a FT so the Kings were now down by 3, 79-76. Portland continued to score making another lay-up, a pull-up jumper, and 3 FTs. While for the Kings, Hawes and Landry had turnovers, Evans missed a lay-up, Cisco had a jumper blocked from behind by Camby, Evans had another lay-up blocked by Camby, Noc missed a 3pt shot, until mercifully with the game out of reach Evans hit a jumper with an ‘and 1’ to bring the final score to within 7 with 22 seconds left. The Kings, who closed the game with 2-for-12 shooting, had let this one get away.
"We played a really good team and had a chance to win in the last few minutes and came away dry," Westphal said. "Our poise down the stretch offensively left a lot to be desired.
"We didn't move the ball like we needed to, the last five minutes especially. We were standing around too much, fighting the shot clock too much. We had forced shots and it was not as smooth as it needs to be to get a win against a team like the Blazers."
With 2:45 left PW decided to look for more offense and substituted Noc and Beno for Hawes and Greene. The Blazers got 4 more defensive rebounds while the Kings didn’t get another rebound after that point. Neither Beno nor Noc scored and Camby was able to get his last 2 blocks. So, nothing was working for the Kings or for Westphal. Evans was only able to get to the basket 1 time in the entire 4th quarter and that was at the 9-minute mark. The Kings guards could not penetrate the Blazers exterior defense. And couldn’t get the ball inside to our low post players except for one loose ball scrabble where Evans was able to get the ball to JT for a out of control lay-up at the 8:11 mark.
Portland is only rated 13th in the NBA in Defensive Efficiency at 103.9 per 100 possessions, but in this game they had a 91.0 rating. So, while the Blazers defense on Tyreke and Beno was quite good, the 3-guard set with Tyreke, Beno and Cisco should have been able to do more. Our poor guard play had as much to do with our lack of scoring at the end of the 4th as Portland’s defense did. And at some point in the future, the Kings are going to have to find ways to get the front line involved in the offense without having Tyreke drive under the rim to do it.
While the Blazers defense, especially in the 4th quarter, played a part in the final score, the play of the SFs had a big impact earlier in the game. Nicolas Batum and Martell Webster were 10 of 14 from the field and 5-5 at the rim. While Donte, Noc and Omri were 2 of 14 from the field and 0-6 at the rim. Other than a target for one of Tyreke’s kick outs, the SF is the lost position in the Kings offense. Very few assisted baskets or set plays, leaves the SF’s to create on their own. Both Omri and Donte take about the same amount of shots from beyond the arc as at the rim, with similar eFG%. But the shots from 3 are almost 100% assisted while the shots at the rim are 60% assisted and a lot of those are from fast break opportunities. These are two of our most athletic players and we need to get them more good opportunities at the rim.
The Kings match up very well with Portland. Tyreke and Beno put up similar numbers to Miller and Roy, although Portland’s backcourt certainly has more experience. The Kings guards were 14 of 29 from the field and 9 of 14 at the rim, and Portland’s duo were 12 of 25 from the field and 9 of 13 at the rim, although Roy and Miller did get 10 more FTAs. Aldridge scored 13pts/7rebs/4 assts to offset Landry’s 17pts/8rebs/0 assts. Even Spencer’s 7pts/9rebs/4assts and 2 blocks were similar to Camby’s 6pts/8rebs/2assts and 5 blocks. Omri and Donte’s shots weren’t there but will return. But unless the Kings guards learn to get the ball into the post and run the offense from the inside out, the Kings will always have a problem getting the offense going against great exterior defenses or good zones.
Hopefully, catching Portland on the second game of a back to back, and with some improved shooting by our SF’s, the Kings can hand the Trailblazers another challenge on their road to the playoffs.
THE KEY BATTLE
Since we know they'll play, let's go with Donte Greene and Omri Casspi vs. Nicolas Batum and Martell Webster. Batum will likely hang out around Evans for a while, which makes it imperative that Greene make Roy work on defense. On the other end, I suspect Greene will watch Roy quite a bit ... which means Evans needs to be ready to jump out on the kick-out (from Roy or Aldridge) to Batum. When the second lines come in, Casspi has to defend Webster better than he was defended the other night. Webster's too good to be left open.
STUNNING REALIZATION
I enjoy breakfast so much I just made a breakfast sandwich for lunch... It is THAT good!
He later revealed the sandwich includes egg, bacon and pepper jack cheese. A truly championship worthy breakfast sandwich.
You know who else loves breakfast?
I knew there was a non-basketball reason I liked Jon Brockman so much.
BOLD PROCLAMATION
Brandon Roy will not score 40 points.

Scouting Report Game Keys:
Guard defense: Miller & Roy attacked Beno on every opportunity. Miller would try and post up any time Beno was on him, and Roy continued to drive past Beno whenever there was a switch. Beno actually did a pretty good job but he was out matched, and whenever help came, Portland always found the helpers man for an open shot. We don’t have to double team when Beno gets isolated, but we must do a better job switching to cover the helpers man, which quite often seemed to be Camby.
Guard offense: Beno ran Miller off a lot of screens for some nice open jumpers, and that should be the plan for whomever Miller is guarding. The guards got to the rim on 9 of 14 attempts but Camby block 3 of the attempts. We should continue to attack the rim, but if Camby isn’t blocked out we need to take it back outside or drop it off to Camby’s man when he leaves to block the shot.
Attacking Portland’s Shoot blockers: Spencer got some easy baskets inside with his quickness, and I think we can run more sets through him down low. In fact the Kings need to attack more, by having Cisco and Tyreke cut through the paint and set some picks on Camby and Howard and Aldridge. I’d like to see how Roy and Miller do at defending our big in the low post, when they’re forced to switch after our big guards screen off their bigs. The best way to stop a shoot blocker is to attack him away from the ball before he sees it coming.
We have to be the slowest team in the league at getting back on defense after made baskets. And, between those easy baskets and the trips to the FT line and missing 50% of our freebies, we give away too many points to beat most teams. The Kings are actually .500 when FGA’s are equal, not Made FT just Attempts. If we can fix just those issues, I might be able to pick the Kings but I don’t see it happening. So, in spite of Portland playing yesterday, and all the excitement from Reke-Roy night, I’ll have to go Blazers by 6. Go Kings.

Thanks Pipe,
It was one of the hardest for me, because we played them twice in one week. I felt like the Oracle from the Matrix. I hate giving anyone bad news.

"Brandon Roy will not score 40 points."
I hope he didn’t read that.
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
Camby
Who ever Camby is guarding on defense will have to hit some jumpers on the outside to draw out Camby. They must make him respect their outside game to open up the lane for Beno and Tyreke. I don’t know about involving him in pick in rolls either, because he is good at trailing the gaurd to the basket and getting blocks. Go Kings!
Camby's not afraid to come away from the basket.
When we tried to run the offense thru Spencer, either Camby or Aldridge came right out and got right into his chest so he couldn’t get off a good pass. They know that Spencer can’t put the ball on the floor and dribble more than a couple of steps away from the rim. If he does he’ll try and make some stupid spin move and turn the ball over.
Camby is quick and mobile and doesn’t have to stand by the rim. He’ll recover and block from behind just as well. The best way to take him out of the play is to seal him off. Either a back side screen or if he fronts his man, pass the ball to the weakside and let his man seal him off.
They used Camby to defend Landry because his height kept Landry from getting off a jumper, and because Camby can backdown and still defend the rim.

I was really surprised at the last game
To see just how badly Beno got abused by Miller. Miller is strong and he just pushed Beno around. Cisco may get some extra minutes to guard Miller or have him guard Roy while Evans takes Miller. Seems like that helped last game.
I said that last game I expected Batum and Bayless to hurt us and I hated that I was half right. Batum lit is up a bit and scored 14 pts. when he averages less than 10 ppg. It could have been worse and I hope we do better on him tonight.
It will be interesting to watch who Beno guards tonight.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

I like Community better.
Abed is awesome.
Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance. Vonnegut
Community is also awesome
In fact NBC has monppolized my comedy viewing with the office, parks and rec, community and 30 rock. 30 rock has been pretty bad this season. Not enough Dr. Spaceman. Oh yeah and Archer on FX is pretty hilarious as well.

if you saw the warriors and blazers games last night then you would know that he would post up beno and draw lots of fouls just like what he did to ellis and curry last night.

HEY GUYS CHECK THIS OUT!
Forget all the game predictions…Tyreke is sure to have a HELL of a game coming off a triple double!
And im writing this for all those Curry fans out there that have been getting on my DAMN nerves:
Rookie seasons:
LeBron James- 20.9 ppg 41.7 fg% 48.8 ts% 29.0 3pt% 75.4 ft% 5.5 reb 5.9 ast 3.5 to 1.6 stl 18.3 PER
Tyreke Evans- 20.3 ppg 46.2 fg% 53.3 ts% 25.4 3pt% 74.3 ft% 5.0 reb 5.5 ast 2.9 to 1.5 stl 18.5 PER
PER= Player Efficiency Rating is the overall rating of a player’s per-minute statistical production. The league average is 15.00 every season.
EWA= Estimated Wins Added is the estimated number of wins a player adds to a team’s season total above what a ‘replacement player’ would produce
VA= Value Added – the estimated number of points a player adds to a team’s season total above what a ‘replacement player’ (for instance, the 12th man on the roster) would produce.
Evans PER is 18.53 with an EWA of 8.3 and a VA of 250.4, now compare that to Curry’s 14.67 and 4.1 and 124.0, and Jennings 14.71 and 3.9 and 116.0…. i honestly cant even tell why all this dumb Curry for ROY talk even started? Or why he is atop the ESPN awards watch or NBA.com Rookie rankings. Just to make it interesting and stir an arguement i assume.
Player Efficiency Rating League average: 15.0
So Curry and Jennings= below league average, just barely which isnt bad for a rookie, Evans is above the League average which is great for a rookie and why he is the ROY….
Evans is also 8th among the PG’s in the league in PER right ahead of Westbrook and Rose . Jennings 31st and Curry 33rd.
WHAT NOW CURRY FANS!!!
THIS SHOULD BE YOUR MOTTO>>>>

You think anyone has showed Tyreke the Rekometer so he is aware of his goals for the remainder of the season?

Bold Brocklamation
Before the game, Jon Brockman will shake hands with Portland Center Marcus Camby. Mysteriously, though not surprisingly, Camby is then lost for the season with a fractured patella.
