If not Peaches, then who?

It's no secret that very few of us are big Peaches fans. But I ask a question, " If not Peaches, then who?" Who would you choose to replace him and why? It would be interesting to see Jerry's style paired with a Mike Breen perhaps. Or keep Napear and give him a different color-guy like Doug Collins.  I myself love Jerry sitting shotgun and wouldn't mind another guy calling the games.  What are your thoughts Anti-Peaches people?

except pretending he’s a nice guy….I would take Grant 24/7 over an hour of Koz

As an example, last night she made a solid argument for why she felt the Kings should not go after Al Jefferson (undersized, doesn’t play any defense, etc. etc.). It was refreshing, and certainly much more well-reasoned than anything you hear when Grant and Lamb are on the air.

I thought she was pretty solid doing the halftime thing with Koz last season

But she’s struggled as a sideline reporter, and I don’t generally care for her radio analysis segments with Jason Ross. Not that she doesn’t appear to have the knowledge, just that her presentation isn’t really refined yet.

However, there is a learning curve involved, and she’s way better than Angela Tsai at this point in their respective careers (faint praise, I know).

Her likeability (and yes, hotness) is at a pretty high level, so I hope the Kings stay with her.

She definitely knows her stuff

I haven’t listened to her on the radio, but I have noticed her fumbling this year but if you watch her at the games she is really on the spot and basically has to write down whatever really quick then get in front of a camera and try to make the best of it. I have always liked her though because of her tearing Koz a new one every time he made one of his stupid comments. That was my favorite part of the game, and then him getting fired on top of that was just icing on the cake.

I could live with him as just the play-by-play guy as well.

I haven’t had league pass in a while, but when I did most of the announcers in the league put me to sleep – no enthusiasm for the game. Grant does have his moments as a homer (especially with Tyreke), but it pales in comparison to many of the announcers I listened to around the league.

by cabz on Mar 15, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Outnumbered....

I know i’m outnumbered on here, but i gotta say that I’m a fan of Napears…. I have NBA League Pass and I’m constantly thinking to myself that were better off than a large majority of NBA teams in regards to announcers. (aside from Jerry’d nicknames of course)

To have a guy that doesnt kiss the asses of all the players is a good thing…. He calls it like he sees it, you may not agree with it, but he’s around the team more than ANYBODY on this board (aside from “maybe” Sam) and his claims are typically spot-on IMO

He mad a giant mistake in taking on the StR “golden boy”, but he didnt say anything that everyone who watches the games couldnt observe themselves….

Am I the only one who thinks Napear does a solid job?

by Hoops916 on Mar 15, 2010 1:29 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I have NBA League Pass and I’m constantly thinking to myself that were better off than a large majority of NBA teams in regards to announcers. (aside from Jerry’d nicknames of course

I think generally most agree with this. This is not the problem.

To have a guy that doesnt kiss the asses of all the players is a good thing

Again, i don’t see this is as being the problem, although i would disagree because he does in fact kiss players asses (although to be fair, all the radio and tv people do and they aren’t exactly in journalism so not the biggest deal i suppose)

He calls it like he sees it

This would be the problem. I guess you can say he calls it like he sees it, that is, that he calls it like an angry middle aged ginger who doesn’t bother to fact check, shoots from the gut, and carries professional vendettas against others (Sorry but if you have not read the Amick story that pissed off Napear, you really have to read it. Not the Amick reaction but the first article that got Grant pissed. Heaven forbid we have, er had, a beat writer who liked to tell us what actually happened during games and likes to tell stories with guys named Fat Lever involved in them).

I don’t think Grant has given us many reasons to take his opinion seriously and I am sick and tired of him always using the arguement that “I am the closest person to the players.” The only justification I ever hear him give for his opinion is (a) i call it like i see it and (b) i am always around the team. Well, guess what, that alone doesn’t necessarily make your opinion valuable to me.

For example, I have watched hundreds of hours of nba basketball in my life, and I can say without a doubt that I can’t tell if someone is a good on the ball defender in the post. Seriously, I can’t, I’m a damn sheep and will just say “Dwight Howard is the best, yay!” I can see if they are good away from the ball because they come in flying in the air and swatting crap like crazy but in just watchin a game, can’t tell what the hell is good man on man defense other than “wow that guy hasn’t made many buckets tonight.”

Just because you watch a lot of games and hang out in the locker room before the game does not mean you are an expert on what is happening in the game. Granted there is often a strong correlation there and i think it helps most people but I have yet to hear Grant say anything on his show that was actually enlightening. It’s all a bunch of tired sports cliches (“Defense wins championships” “Player A is a winner” “Player B is a crybaby”) and yelling and screaming (and cheerleading which can drive me crazy but for some reason i don’t hear so many people complain about that).

So basically, i dunno if you are the only one who thinks Napear does a solid job but I can’t say I will join you in that sentiment.

Could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

by wallywagon11 on Mar 15, 2010 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Well Done....

I appreciate your response Wally…..well done-

I completely understand your point of view on Grant, although it appears that we dont see “eye to eye”….. which is fine, cause i dont think there’ a “right” or “wrong” to this issue…

To say he knows “everything” about the Kings and basketball in itself is equally as ignorant and saying he “knows nothing” etc…… There are obviously times where I’ve wanted a more insightful analysis of the game out of him, but then again, I feel that way about almost EVERY announcer calling a game (including former coaches)…. I hate cliche’s as much as the next guy, but the sad reality is that they are grossly overused by announcers in basketball, & every other sport for the record…. the only announcers that (at least on a national level) that are worth a damn at breaking down the game IMO are; Doug Collins, Breen, Hubie Brown & every now and again, Jeff Van Gundy…..

And I agree that just because you watch alot of games (fyi he’s mised ONE game, ONE game, since 86’) and hang out in the locker room before games that it doesnt equate to being an expert….. BUT, he’s also on “team planes,” “hotels”, “practices” etc, so I DO trust his judgement on alot of the behind the scene stuff going on….Especially when he comments that a certain somebody, who shall not be named, lacks “leadership” skills…. That, to me, is something that I DO trust his expertise on, seeing that he’s around the guys so much…

Maybe the fact that hes a New Yorker, and speaks like one/acts like one, rubs some people in small market Sacramento the wrong way…. If he held the same position for the Knicks, the fans wouldnt blink twice at his “shoot from the hip” accusations…..

I appreciate your input though-

I think he's ok as a Play by play guy

But I can’t get over him constantly talking about Tyreke and essentially “stat-watching” every game. It seems like every time Tyreke gets a rebound or an assist he feels the need to tell the audience how many Tyreke has, even if its just the first quarter. I understand Tyreke’s a special player and what not but he should really give it a rest. His radio show is the real reason I hate him though.

I followed every assist and rebound in last night’s game and considering the team isn’t contending, stat following isn’t a bad thing among fans. I just find it irritating how Grant obsessively mentions every single rebound, point, and assist like nothing else actually matters.

I hate to admit this, but he does a good job with Play by Play, I actually liked it better when the G man did TV and Grant did radio for the games. As far as the talk show, he is a tool and absolute tool, but so are most of his callers. I rarely listen to 1140 anymore and have switched to 1320 and 680. In fact I hate his show so much that I listen to 680 and I am a die hard hater of the Niners and Giants but it is better than Peaches and Cream
