Lottery Watch

Unfortunately the Kings won't be making the playoffs this year.... bummer, I know. But hey, we always have the lottery and then the draft to look forward to, right? With about 15 more games to go for most teams, it may be a good time to start looking at the race that actually matters to us: "the ping-pong ball race." Now, this post has nothing to do with tanking; it's all about being informed about the other teams we're 'competing' with for those damn balls.

After the jump, I'm listing the teams we're close to record wise and their upcoming schedule. I also hope to update this post after games to get a better picture of where we stand as the end of the season draws near.

Star-divide

First we have 2 teams that are pretty much set with their lottery postioning. The Nets are 7-60 and WILL finish with the league's worst record. After them we have the Minnesota Timberwolves that barring a miracle (or a GS collapse) will finish with the second worst record in the L. They are at 14-54 right now and will probably not win that many more games.

03/28 update: I'm deleting Golden State and Washington (20 and 21 wins respectively) because I don't think they're catching the Kings. The bottom four seem to be set: Jersey, Minny, GS, and Wash.

So let's look at the lottery race for the other teams and let's start with our beloved Kings

Record: 24-51

Upcoming schedule:

5 home, 2 road (strenght of schedule .503)

@ Minny

vs. Portland

vs. San Antonio

vs. Clippers

vs. Dallas

vs. Houston

@ Lakers

Prediction: 29-53 (progress FTW!)

Now, lets look at our ping-pong balls competitors

Indiana

Pacers

Record: 28-47

Upcoming schedule:

5 home, 2 road (strength of schedule = .496)

vs. Miami

vs. Houston

vs. Knicks

@ Cleveland

vs. New Jersey

vs. Orlando

@ Washington

Prediction: 29-53

Detroit

Pistons

Record: 23-50

Upcoming schedule:

4 home, 5 road (strength of schedule = .496)

vs. Miami

vs. Phoenix

@ Atlanta

@ Philly

vs Atlanta

@ Miami

@ Charlotte

vs. Toronto

@ Minny

Prediction: 29-53

Philadelphia

76ers

Record: 26-48

Upcoming schedule:

4 home, 4 road (strength of schedule = .491)

@ Charlotte

vs. Toronto

vs. Detroit

@ Miami

vs. Milwaukee

@ Memphis

vs. Miami

@ Orlando

Prediction: 28-54

New York

Knicks

Record: 26-47

Upcoming schedule:

3 home, 6 road (strength of schedule = .490)

@ Portland

@ Golden State

@ Clippers

vs. Boston

@ Indiana

@ Orlando

vs. Miami

vs. Washington

@ Toronto

Prediction: 28-54

and last but certainly not least

Los Angeles

Clippers

Record: 27-46

Upcoming schedule:

5 home, 4 road (strength of schedule = .504)

@ Milwaukee

@ Toronto

@ Denver

vs. Knicks

vs. Portland

@ Sacramento

vs. Golden State

vs. Dallas

vs. Lakers

Prediction: 30-52

So there it is. These are the teams we may want to follow closely and start rooting for in the coming weeks. Let's hope they win as much as possible so that 'lottery-wise' the Kings can get a better seed and hopefully a higher pick. (Let's also hope my predictions are off because that would mean a 8th-10th in the lottery). I'll try updating this as time permits. If we want to keep the post up until the end of the season let's get some rec's and move it to the top of the page.

Note: If anyone finds an error anywhere in the record or in the upcoming schedule part, please let me know so that I can adjust accordingly.

Top 4-

This is clearly a four man draft at the top. During the pre-draft process, someone is going to climb but the Kings need to land 1-4 to guarantee one of Wall, Turner, Cousins or Favors.

The Sacramento Convergence concept offers Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the State a solution to feasibly construct a new multi-use Entertainment and Sports Complex.

I dont think it’s clear that it’s a four man draft. What about Wesley Johnson, for instance, who currently ranked 3rd on nbadraft.net? You might think that those are the top four guys, but it’s not clear that they are.

by DustyG on Mar 17, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

I like Wesley Johnson more than Cousins. Possibly more than Favors. This kid is going to be very good.

Yup

Him and Tyreke in the backcourt would be awesome! He has a clean stroke and hes shooting 41% from 3’s. That would be a pretty good defensive team of the future with Tyreke, Johnson, and DG, not to mention tough to match up with.

I haven't followed college basketball like so many of you do.

That may change in the future, since I have come to learn from you guys, the importance and thrill of watching these future NBA players evolve. (Looking forward to watching Kentucky versus East Tennessee State this afternoon.)

I just read Paul Gutierrez’s article this morning in the Bee covering Elston Turner, Jr. While I had heard of his name frequently, in these threads, I hadn’t made the connection to him with former assistant coach, Elston Turner. It would be ironical if the Kings picked him up, since he still “harbors a twinge of resentment” that his father was fired along with Adelman. I remember when Elston was fired and I was sorry to see him go. I question whether the Kings would pick up Turner, given this past history, but I thought the article was very interesting.

Jr. has no plans of coming out this year.

He is waiting his turn to be the leader of the team. Don’t be surprised if he turns out to be a star player. his numbers aren’t great off the bench now. But he is fundamentally sound with a high basketball IQ. Expect to hear his name more during his junior year.

by Sactobrother on Mar 19, 2010 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Well

I think GP’s going to pick Cole Aldrich all the way up to pick 4, for some reason. He’s not going to pick one of those clear-cut, sports analyst choices. If you truly believe he would draft one of those guys you listed, if he gets the 1-4th pick, you’ll be setting yourself up for a huge disappointment on draft day.

I'm thinking we'd have to suffer some painful losing

or all those teams suddenly experience winning streaks for us to get anything lower than 6th. But I’ve resolved that we’re not getting a top 3 pick this year anyway so I’m not worrying about it. We’d have to trust the ping pong balls, and they’re assholes.

Eeek! So if we don't win the lottery then we're screwed

If we end up with the 10th pick I would’nt mind trading it for a good young player who has already been in the league a few years. Just a thought so don’t kill me over it. I’m just not sure I want another JT or Hawes. Or a DJ Augustine or Bayless. Although we could end up with a gem like Brook Lopez , Joakim Noah, Jennings, or Collison although I don’t see it now. The tourny could change that. All in all I will let GP do his job & whatever he thinks is best I will support.
Would anyone be willing to trade the 8-10th pick for Thabeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet? The Griz are set at center with Gasol & could easily get a replacement for Gay on the cheap with that pick at a lot cheaper than Thabeeeeeeeeeeet’s $4+ million rookie contract. I think Thabeeeeeeeeeet will be good. Maybe not great but he really has all the tools to be a really good center in this league. He just maybe wasn’t worthy of a top 5 pick let alone top 3. He sure would have helped last night.

Thabeet’s line: 28 minutes, 4-6 shooting, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 10 points.

No Thabeet.

Let the Grizz pay the price for their poor decision. If he doesn’t get his 3rd or 4th year contract picked up then I would take a low risk flier on him but he’s not currently worth anything higher than maybe a mid-twenties pick.

What has anyone seen out of any of the centers not named Cousins or Favors

that makes you think they will be any better than Thabeet? Just because he hasn’t played much this year I don’t see Whiteside or Aldrich playing over Marc Gasol. If it takes a center three years to develop in the NBA wouldn’t you rather have one that is 1 year ahead? Are any of the centers more physicly gifted than Thabeet? I think he catches way too much heat for being the #2 pick & for not getting big minutes behind one of the best young centers in the league.

Whiteside/Thabeet

In answer to your first question, Whiteside seems to be playing quite a bit better than Thabeet as a freshman. Nbadraft.net thinks Whiteside’s upside is significantly better than they thought of Thabeet’s last year (which I dont imagine could have risen after an ineffective rookie year).

While I recognize that Thabeet is stuck behind Gasol, he has been very ineffective in the minutes he has gotten. Anyways, I think I’d rather have someone else at that 8 spot, and I’m happy to leave it to Petrie.

I'm with you here

I don’t think Thabeet’s been all that bad, but he’s in an interesting situation in Memphis – a suddenly competitive team with an outside shot at the playoffs in a market where they are having attendance issues. In that situation, I can see why management would prefer to shoot for the playoffs than develop a guy like Thabeet in actual NBA games.

It made sense IMO for them to send him to the D League, where he can actually play some tangible minutes.

BTW, he’s got 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks in 16 minutes against the Rockets early in the third quarter tonight.

Just a few years back, the Blazers were in a similar position.

The 2006 draft, we had the worst record, and ended up with the fourth pick. Turned into picking possibly the best two players of that draft. The next year, we won, despite being in the seventh spot.

I see a lot of similarities. You guys got quite possibly the best player out of this draft, and look to be hovering around the same place as we were. Don’t know if lightning strikes twice, but I wouldn’t lose sleep over lottery positioning at this point. You either get lucky or you don’t. Make the best of it no matter what.

I don't agree with your numbers, but I am glad you posted this thread.

I attempted something like this last season but it never took off (I was the only one writing and reading it)

You have the Pacers winning 7 games and the Wiz winning 4. I think a better way to organize this is to eliminate the playoff teams and just go with the match ups of the bottom feeders as that is where their wins are most likely to occur.

I also agree that many of the remaining teams are in a version of tank mode. The Nyets are a few games from clinching the bottom spot, the TWolves are at #2 (off subject rant: the Pups are worse than NJ in many ways; They had a better record last season and added the #5 and #6 lottery picks and they will win maybe 16 games this season after 24 last year. That is less than the worst record in the League in 2009. That is an embarrassment), and the Warriors are the most exciting losing team in the League but will add 2-4 games locking up the 3rd spot.

In descending order of the remainder:
LA Clippers 25 wins (14 games remaining, 4 vs. others)
New York Knicks 24 wins (15 games remaining, 4 vs. others)
Sac Kings 23 wins (15 games remaining 5 vs. others)
Philly 76ers 23 wins (15 games remaining, 3 vs. others)
Detroit Pistons 23 wins (14 remaining, 5 vs. others)
Indiana Pacers 22 wins (15 remaining, 5 vs. others)
Wash Wizards 21 wins (18 remaining, 5 vs. others)

If you figure that there is a 50% chance of each team beating the other, and give wins if they play the Nets or the TWolves and split the odd number games (1,3 or 5) to favor a home court win – it turns out like this:

Clippers – 2 more wins = 27 – 55
Kings – 3 more wins (not counting squashing the Bucks on Friday, so add one more win) 4 wins = 27 – 55
Knicks 3 more wins = 27 – 55
Detroit – 3 more wins = 26 – 56
Philly – 2 more wins = 25 – 57
Pacers – 3 more wins = 25 – 57
Wizards – 2 more wins = 23 – 59

As an aside: The Nyets and Mini may win another game or two but they do not play each other (recount the start of the season when they fought over losing streaks)

That leaves one tie breaker of two teams at 25 losses and three teams at 27 losses. This prediction makes the Kings in the running for 8th 9th or 10th. I have a feeling that the Kings will get “edges” if they do a coin flip. But that is the defeatist in me. If the Kings don’t pull a Pokey Face (sorry Lady Gaga) on Gumby Jennings then they tie for 26 wins and have a chance at 7th and 8th picks.

I don't agree with my numbers either... lol

These were some lazy predictions, I just wanted to list the schedule and added the prediction at the end. I do see that the Kings are likely to end in the 8th-10th range (good in terms of wins, bad in terms of lottery chances).

Either way, thanks for taking the time to look at the numbers a little more. Rec’d

It was a good starting point ed, so props for getting it started.

the Kings only play 1 east team still in the lottery race and that’s IND
the Knicks play quite a few west teams
the rest of the east plays each other so I expect the east teams to average each other out.

Washington tanked at the trade deadline, so top 4 chances go to NJ, MIN, WAS, & GS.

4 of the Kings 5 possible victories are on the road. Including the last game agaisnt the Laker’s who if they’ve locked up the top spot in the west, might not want to play their starters hard before the playoffs on a meaningless game. So, if the Kings continue to play well, they could end up with 28 and 10th place as the eastern teams split with each other and average out to 26-27.

Point of Fact: since the lottery went to 1000 balls and 14 teams, no team higher than 6th worst record has gotten lucky in the lottery. The odds of the team with the 10th worst record getting a top 3 pick is 3.6%.

Some Random thoughts on this..

I would take Thabeet if given the chance for a 6-10 pick, but IMHO Memphis would not trade him, I want to use Noah as a comparison, his first year and one can argue second year he was getting labeled a bust and now we would all love to have him.
I agree that we will likely be in the 8th-10th position and chances are we will get a guy that will help us, but not take us to the playoffs. However I do believe that our current core with another year of growth and with our cap space we will see a defensive presence brought in, it may be a second tier big or a great defending perimeter guy. Either way we improve defensively and the trust of playing together gets us some growth, add a nice pick that contributes and it all adds up to 10-12 more wins and a sniff at the playoffs.

Should the balls bounce our way and we get a Favors or Cousins then I boldly proclaim that we will pick up a good guard in FA and make the playoffs, either way we have a lot of great things to look forward to!!

Tonights an interesting one to watch for lotto teams

We have Detroit v. Indiana, probably want Detroit to win since they have the worse record by a game.

Wash v. Charlotte, time for Washington to break that streak, and Charlotte is poor on the road but much better than the Wiz overall. Still see a ’Cats win.

New York v. Denver, Again Denver probably wins but New York could catch fire.

Clippers v. Dallas. Clippers are tanking again. I have a sick feeling in my stomach that they win the lotto again.

nice tier-ing

we could argue here or there but I am fan of the tier system. You rank and order the levels the rank inside the tiers and adjust according to need where “equals” arrive.

i.e. Kings end up with the 8th pick: if all of A and A- are gone and you feel B+ tier is set you order according to need (and perhaps to timing: a 23 or 24 year rookie can play sooner but will develop less, a 19 or 20 yr old big man is a 3-4 year project). You decide if Whiteside > Monroe > Aldrich for example.

Thanks for sharing this Smils

Ed Davis seems to me like just a rotation big

He won’t be a “bust” like Patrick OBryant or Ike Diogu style. He is athletic, rebounds, plays hard D. But hes’ not a lottery player. He’s kind of guy who will end up coming off a bench foe 20 mins and hussling.

by tafkasam on Mar 24, 2010 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Disagree

He’s a good player on a bad team. He avg 13 pts this year, but it could have been more if he actually got the ball more. He shot 58% and avg. 9reb with almost 3 blks per game in only 27 minutes. ESPN always has a bunch of weaknesses for each playe, but all they could muster up for Ed is he needs more experience and strength. Not exactly some glaring weaknesses. He’s 6-10 with huge arms, so he can play a little center as well. I would draft him after Favors and Cousins were gone.

It was the same idea I used last year. It’s one place where we can all get this info, instead of having to check the standings everyday. Plus, knowing the upcoming opponents gives us a better idea of where everyone’s record is going.

In the coming days I’ll probably drop the Wizards and Warriors if it’s clear there’s no way they can catch us in the standings (already looking like it but I want to give it a couple more games just in case).

Indiana is playing pretty good basketball right now and they’ll be at home. We should still beat Minnesota though, but then again, we’ve already been blown out by Minnesota this year too so its not a given.

Not impressed

I haven’t watched a lot of Kentucky this year, but I’ve watched them a lot in the tourney. I have read a lot about Cousins and how good he is, but man he looks unathletic as hell. I bet his stock goes down when they start working out everybody. He puts up outstanding numbers, but he’s also playing with 3 other 1st rounders and he wont have the same size advantage in the pro’s, because his lack of athleticism will make him smaller. I really hope the Kings don’t draft him.

A crazy Idea..

I really want the Kings to obtain another 1st rd pick somehow and here is my crazy idea on how to do it. It is obvious that the Wizards are looking to dump Gilbert’s $17-$20 mil per season salary. A lot of people on this site feel Tyreke’s ideal backcourt mate would be someone who is a good shooter and someone who is a bit taller so the opposing team’s PG would have a tough choice to make on who to match up with. I know he makes a shit load of money, but since they are really trying hard to get rid of him I would take him ONLY if they included their 1st rd pick this year and took Noc and Beno. It would mean us taking on an extra $4mil annually over the next 3-4yrs, but it would also be a lock for us to get TWO TOP 6 PICKS (In a loaded draft) and an all-star backcourt mate with Tyreke. PURE CRAZYNESS!!

Clips are 3 games ahead in the win column and we play them.

We are 4 games ahead of GS in the win column. So, if we win 3 more and Clips lose the rest, we win the tie breaker. We would have to lose the rest and GS win four for them to have the tie breaker.

Schedule excluded I don’t think either is a high possibility.

Beabois went for 40 against the Warriors by the way. I guess GS really likes rookies.

Anyways, I’m thinking about deleting both Washington and Golden State from the post. Doesn’t seem likely that they’ll catch the Kings so we can concentrate a bit more on the teams that matter in this race. Looks like Jersey, Minny, GS, and Wash have the top four locked.

by chenp22 on Apr 4, 2010 2:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I was talking about ping pong ball positioning, not post lottery draft pick postition

For example: NJ has 10 wins with 8 games to go, so even if they won all 8 we’re not going to be #1. Minny has 14 wins with 8 games to go also. We can’t be #2.

Mathematically, the best we could end up is 3rd, but I think we’ll end up with 26 or 27 wins. I don’t think it’s likely that GS, or Was win 6 or 7 of their 9-10 remaining. It is possible, though unlikely, that Detroit could win 4-5 of their remaining 9, thus our best lottery position is likely 5th.

But I think 6th is the most probable. We end up with 26-27 and Philly and NY only need to win 1-2 more and the Clips and Indy only need to win 1 more.

by betweentheeyes on Mar 28, 2010 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

this from collegehoopsnet.com

n the event of a tie, the combinations for the two spots in question are split evenly between the tied teams with any extra pick given to the winner of the tiebreaker. The lottery is conducted with witnesses verifying the all 14 balls are represented once as they are placed in the lottery machine. The balls are placed in the machine for 20 seconds to randomize prior to having the first ball drawn. The remaining three balls are drawn at 10 second intervals. NBA League Officials determine which team holds the winning combination and that franchise is awarded the #1 overall draft pick. The four balls are returned to the machine and the process is repeated to determine the second and third picks. In the event that a combination belongs to a team that has already won its pick (or if the 1 unassigned combination comes up), the round is repeated until a unique winner is determined. When the first three teams have been determined, the remaining picks are given out based on regular season record with the worst teams getting the highest picks. This assures each team that it can drop no more than 3 spots from its projected.

by betweentheeyes on Mar 28, 2010 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Pretty much what I thought. So if Detroit tied with us, that’d be nice for us because it would increase our odds a little bit. I honestly think its just between us and Detroit right now for the 5th or 6th spot.

Minny will have their position determined (man, they suck) and will play to win. Miami – ? they are fighting for playoff position and no one wants to play the Cavs or Orlando. Dwyane Wade will take the Pistons apart single handedly if he needs to.

Sometimes teams play up to their competition.

I think that heightened competition will benefit Orlando as they gear up for the playoffs. I think it benefits teams MORE if they have intense competition going into the playoffs.

I think that’s partly why Cleveland let down last season. It was way too easy for them come playoff team and then Orlando hit them in their mouth and they just couldn’t mentally adjust.

What happens (this is just what I think I remember)

Is that if teams tie, the number of ping pong balls they get is added up and split. So if we and Detroit tied, 88+63 = 75 balls each, then a coin flip for the team that gets the other one, who gets put in the 5th slot.

Anyway we can keep this thread up for more time

It’s off my fanpost bar already. If not, I could just copy and paste it

Question

I looked at both Kings’ and Detroit’s schedules….if the Kings lose the rest of their games and
Detroit wins 1 (last game against Twolves)….how many more extra ping pong balls could the Kings get? In short, what are the realistic, possible scenarios for the Kings to move up and get more ping pong balls in there?
