Tiago Splitter
Tiago Splitter is considered to be the top center in Europe. San Antonio Express-News noted that Spurs drafted him in 2007 but won't be able to bring him over since they can only offer him the mid-level exception.
Perhaps we could get some help from our very own Jason Levien who is knowledgeable about all things related with foreign contracts, etc to help make this deal happen.
The only way this might be able to work is that spurs trade us his draft rights then we can offer what free cap space we have.
What do you guys think?

Personally?
I think the reasoning the GM used is stupid. Splitter may get less money as he gets older. The big issue is whether Splitter wants to play with the Spurs.
As far as the Kings getting Splitter, I don’t think the cost is worth going after Splitter. But that’s just my opinion.

Yeah more than MLE
for a guy who hasn’t played a game yet in the league make me nervous, even though he’s been highly touted
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This is what always pops up into my head when I think of Tiago Splitter.

Splitter
If he was smart, he would sign to a short contract with the Spurs and try to get paid later. The fact that he hasn’t worries me. Maybe he isn’t that good?
He has been touted as a tougher Pau Gasol, which would be amazing.
If Splitter came over, played and learned with Duncan, the Spurs may never miss a beat. They could possibly dominate the next decade as well.

He's obligated by the 1st rd rookie scale for 4 years and he was drafted dead last at #30 I believe
The Spurs would have to release/waive him – and I think all the other teams would have to pass before they could resign him.

LTTG I am not 100% sure
but I believe that after 3 years the rookie scale contract mumbo jumbo disappears which is why Splitter has waited (and why the Spurs have not traded his rights) they want to sign him (at least that is what I keep hearing at 48minutesofhell and ptr). They have just been waiting for the opportune moment which I believe is this summer (when the rookie scale contract) no longer applies and the spurs can offer more than the base rookie scale salary.
Maybe a resident salary cap expert (paging a Guru… a Mister Pookeyguru) could explain further.

If the King's could get Splitter
for a similar deal to the one Luis Scola signed (3 years at a bit more than 3 million a year I believe and sham sports confirms) then I would be pleased. We would give a young solid international player who has a mind for defense a chance on the King’s sounds good to me ONLY if the price is right. Otherwise I suggest drafting well and patience.

Just as a further thought David Anderson (whose contract is extremely favorable) was playing very good ball in europe and we see the contract he was offered and accepted as well a little UNDER 3 million per year. What makes Splitter so special that he feels he deserves MORE than 5 million per year when their is (in my opinion) no precedent for such a contract given the unproven nature (at least in the NBA) or Splitter’s game. I’m not saying that I do not think he would develop into a Marc Gasol/Luis Scola type (though he supposedly has better athletic ability than either of those two) he appears to have the game to be a solid starter for several years but I’m not for throwing money into a player who may or may not be very good. Also, another example is Juan Carlos Navarro. He played pretty well his lone season in Memphis but his contract was not above 5 million it was in the 2-3 range as well and he was one of the premier European guards.
Just food for thought.

The Spurs don't have to sign Splitter to the rookie scale contract after 3 years
They can use the MLE or cap room (either or is fine) to sign Splitter if they can convince him to come over.
I forget where it says that in Coon’s FAQ though.

Section 42
When a team signs a first round draft pick within three years after he is drafted, they use the salary scale for the year in which he signs (usually the player signs in the same year he is drafted). After three years they have the option of either using the salary scale or signing him like he was a free agent — using their cap room, the Mid-Level exception, the exception or the Disabled Player exception, and with standard raises. They can only do the latter if the player did not play intercollegiately in the interim, and such a contract must be for at least three seasons.

Spurs traded the rights to Scola to the Rockets in a money-saving move. Maybe they do the same with Splitter.
I’d be down for the right price, like most all of us.
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
Personally, I think this would be a good move
and honestly, I wouldn’t mind that much if we overpaid him a bit, in the $6-7 mil area as long as his contract is no more then 2 years. What else are we using our cap space on? May as well give a potential stud center a shot.
am I the only person
that is holding out for Marc Gasol?
