Very cool quotes from PW's post game conference

Sounds encouraged but not satisfied. Looks like we played a good game, just couldn’t come up with some boards and fell to a better team. Sounds encouraging to me

OKC is a scary, scary team

Kevin Durant seems like a humble kid. I like that. Otherwise good game from the Kings. I can’t complain. What’s our moral record now?

Didn't get to see much of the game

But I heard most of the first half on the radio, and it sounded like OKC was hurting us on the offensive glass.

Getting 106 in that building isn’t too bad, considering the rough stretch of offensive basketball in the first quarter.

He plays good man to man

but no he doesn’t block shots. He only has trouble against dominant 7 footers but who doesn’t? Dominant 7 footers are a dying breed anyways & Hawes has shown the potential to be a good shot blocker & post defender just not a great rebounder. Thus Lee would be perfect. He is just as good a defender as Landry & I think Landry is a good defender.

Not saying I want Lee on the Kings. Just that his stats aren’t inflated much, if at all, from playing for the Knicks. In fact I think he’d have better stats if he were able to play the PF spot instead of Center.

by Aykis16 on Mar 3, 2010 12:57 AM PST up reply actions

He's the prototypical four

That would really benefit from having a shot blocker as his counterpart in the frontcourt. He’s fine in the pick-and-roll and guarding on the perimeter, but his shortcomings are exposed as basically a smallball five in the Knicks’ system, especially because Gallinari and Harrington, both not exactly defensive stalwarts, are the fours he plays with.

In context, Hawes isn’t an ideal partner, but Lee would look a lot better on the defensive end with Hawes in the middle taking care of the post defense and shot blocking responsibilities. If the Kings draft Cousins, for instance, he and Lee would mesh pretty well.

Now, as for Lee is worth $10 million, I’d say yes. Lee is above average in pretty much every category and has two prominent skills this team would benefit from — defensive rebounding and a superb pick-and-roll partner with Evans (as Lee is pretty adept at rolling to the basket or shooing the 15-20 foot jumper). Above $10 million? That starts to get a bit murky. $12 million is bearable but you’re overpaying him, and anything above that is ridiculous.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

But I think a tanking economy and (reportedly) losing over 300 million in Madoff investments has more to do with that than anything.

By low, sell high. The Maloofs aren’t selling anytime soon. I do (sadly) agree that if they don’t get an arena, they will move within 5 years.

Yes but

It doesn’t make good sense to sell at a low value. Since they just sold the beer distributership they shouldn’t need liquid assets.

That being said, if they STILL need liquid $, you could very well be right. I just doubt it. The Kings are worth more on paper ( which matters more for business loans etc) than they would get in the market. Their current loan for Arco drags their value down, and they aren’t selling with a new arena.

I agree; if the Maloofs get a new arena, they're staying.

& I think if they need dinero$$$, they’re more likely to restructure a deal with the loans for the Palms than to sell the Kings at a low(undervalued) price. that doesn’t make financial sense; and I don’t think their heart would be in that…afterall, these guys are fans, too.

by Rhondda Nunes on Mar 2, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

Why not?

The NBA has proven that even bad products can still make money overtime. Franchises are good investments generally, and even though their likely won’t be a balloon in popularity (and therefore profits) like the mid-eighties-to-mid-nineties period, the value of a Franchise generally increases every year at a tremendous rate. Furthermore, they basically have a mini-monopoly, something more valuable then any other asset the Maloofs currently pursue.
Albeit with that said, if the Maloofs are using the Kings as a “last stand” investment platform, then everyone better get ready for several years of not really aiming for a championship.

The paths are very similar, but you know what’s the difference I see? When we had those picks in the 10s and 20s, we got good players. No Robert Swift or Saer Sene for the Kings.

If we can get another good young player, ala Westbrook or Green, in next years draft, then we’re really talking. Save the $$ for 2011 (unless a no brainer comes along) and let’s contend for years to come.

So what if we don't get a good player

or we get a huge project. Do you really want to wait 4 years to be a playoff team? I understand being smart with the money but I think you underestimate Petrie & the Maloofs competitiveness. They want to win. Why else draft Tyreke was NBA ready not a player who was considered a project like Curry, Jennings, or Rubio. They drafted JT who they felt was ready to contribute right away instead of a project like Anthony Randolph or Donte Greene. They traded Martin not for draft picks but for a ready, starting quality, 27 year old PF in Landry instead of waiting for JT to improve. They were looking at guys like Dalembert & Okafor.

by edm7 on Mar 2, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

nope

Hassan is a small conference freshman who has been mostly hidden from view but lately has taken off like a rocket.

I think he’s a project in the sense that he’s young, inexperienced, and hasn’t had top level coaching. But in terms of pure physical ability he’s starting to look off the charts. And everything I read says he’s a good kid who’s devoted to working hard at improving.

Coincidentally, he had a game tonight vs UTEP: 20 pts, 14 Reb, 6 blocked shots. His previous game he had a Triple Double including 13 blocked shots! Game prior to that vs Rice he has 17 rebounds.

IMO, if he were on the Kings next year he’d see plenty of minutes, and if his talent is as great as it’s starting to appear he could be just what the doctor ordered fairly quickly.

That said, yeah, I’d draft Favors ahead of him or Cousins right now.

Whiteside is a project

its tough to say how he will play against better talent. Shot-blocking should translate to the league but he’s definitely a risky pick plus he’s 2 years older than the average freshman. JT dominated his league but he may end up being a fringe starter.

True

but Whiteside appears to be considerably more athletic than JT.

Also, taller and he has like a 7’4" wingspan.

Cousins off court issues

do scare me but he is by far the best big man in the draft. Jennings has issues too but teams were stupid to pass on him. Do teams pass on BG last year if he had issues? Hell no & you don’t pass on Cousins. Favors might be good one day but how long before Tyreke starts getting frustrated with losses. When you get your franchise guy you build around him sooner than later before he starts to think the franchise is not dedicated to wiining & plans his exit. No more projects. Start building the team around Tyreke now.

Free agency isn't the only way to use cap space

and I don’t understand David Lee for $12mil/yr at all when Carl Landry is on the team. How many PF’s that are going to be expensive does one team need?

I don’t see playing Lee and Landry together down the stretch of games working very often, so why are we pining for Lee? Or have we given up on Landry already?

What happened to a 3 big rotation?

If we have David Lee in that game last night we win. I like Landry but as long as we have Hawes or Landry in the front court we need a rebouner & Lee is not just a rebounder he is a dominant rebounder & a 20+ pt scorer. So if you want to keep Landry as our starting PF forever than that means you are giving up on Hawes & to me Haews is important to our offensive flow & he is our best post defender. If you want to build our front court around Landry I’m fine with that but I just don’t see a lot of quality centers out there to pair him with.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Mar 3, 2010 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

My point is

a three big rotation of Hawes/Landry/Lee doesn’t do a lot for me, because I don’t see a lot of situations that Landry and Lee could play together, do you?

If you spend $12mil or $10mil on Lee and $8-$10mil on Landry and have to pay Hawes eventually, there’s not a lot of room for another big right?

So the only way getting Lee makes sense to me is if the 3 bigs are: Lee / (Landry or Hawes) / someone else, implying you don’t see one of Landry or Hawes in the long term view, which is an understandable position, but I hadn’t seen it discussed.

I’m of the opinion that the Knicks will keep his bird rights and match any contract he’s offered once they’ve done their spending-up-to-the-cap (yes, I realize about the cap holds, but I don’t think NY gets two max players, so they won’t end up having to waive Lee to get the space). That’s why I was surprised to see Nate go, but if he’s not with the coach then he’s out. I think they do the same with Sergio and McGrady if they keeps playing with fire.

Defense: A solid defensive player due to his athleticism and effort level. Very good at defending players that like to stake out in the high post. Has the lateral quickness to stay in front of most power forwards. Suffocates his man on the perimeter when he knows he has a quickness advantage. Isn’t a great defender in back to the basket situations, but fights hard for position, doesn’t let his man get anything easy, and always gets a hand up. Will get beaten by stronger players who don’t get intimidated by his physical style of player. Does a good job going straight up and committing a ton of silly fouls at the rim. Isn’t much of a shot blocker, but will rotate over from the weakside to contest shots. Gets a lot of deflections, but not many steals. Shows great anticipation on the glass. Always seems to be boxing out and getting in on the actions on the glass. Extremely productive as a rebounder. Plays a very smart brand of defense for a player with his level of experience, although he’ll probably never be a great defender due to his average size and bulk.

His stats are inflated by playing in D’antoni’s system. He’ll come here and be our best rebounder but I’d stay away from another undersized big man who can’t block shots.

by allbenji's on Mar 2, 2010 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

D'Antoni's system is probably hurting his stats more than anything

By forcing him to play as a center. It’s not like the Knicks are playing at a ridiculous pace where there are a lot of possessions. They’re 7th in pace. For comparison, the Kings are 6th. Does that mean Tyreke’s stats are inflated?

hard to say since tyreke dictates the tempo

He’s not at the will of a teams pace as much because he decides what the pace will be and a lot of times the possessions end with him diving to the basket or getting fouled.

And even though losing close games is never easy, OKC has a way better record than we do. They have arguably the league’s best young player in Durant. Plus, we only lost by a few when JT and Brockman were both out. We got killed on the rebounds and they obviously would’ve made a huge difference.

Getting dudes like Durant and Westbrook back to back

can really jump-start a franchise. Harden is a good player too.

By landing the 2nd, 4th and 3rd overall picks in consecutive seasons, OKC has had a tremendous infusion of talent, and obviously it’s starting to pay dividends.

The Kings have only had one recent draft pick in that range and it turned out to be a jackpot in Tyreke. Couple more players with big time talent and we’ll be flying high, but meanwhile we shouldn’t delude ourselves. Talent wise we still need to make some major upgrades…

I do see some stars in this draft

But we need a top 5 to get them. Very solid players after, but the Kings do need another very good player.

Jeff Green is a very good player drafted at #5

not a star, but very darn good, he fits in very nicely with that team, my guess is that he will be either the 6th man or traded for a “true” power froward and/or 5.

by betweentheeyes on Mar 2, 2010 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

I bet we could have easy traded KM for a #5 pick

oh no another can of worms. Minnisota got the 5th pick for Mike Miller & Randy Foye ouch! KM to Utah for Kover, Brewer, & NY’s pick could have worked.

I love beating dead horses.

I'm getting a little bit jazzed

about Hassan Whitehead. The kid is blazing up a lot of early draft boards, and by the time the draft rolls around he could be a top 5 pick. Maybe even Top 3…

Ping ping balls will favor us having a Top 4 pick, meaning we should have a good chance to land someone like that or a Derrick Favors. Rebounding!!

For him that would probably be smart...

For us it’d be great if he comes out.

We need to hit the jackpot one mo’ time, and if nothing else Whitehead would be one more potential “ka-ching” at the top of the draft. I’d be happy to let him develop here. Or if the ping pong balls don’t exactly bounce our way, Wall, Evans, Favors, Cousins all seem to be the top 4 players in most mocks right now, and Hassan’s presence in the draft could be insurance or push another good player down to us.

Kings really missed JT and Brockman tonight

But it was a great effort I think. Other than the rebounds, we played solid defense and were moving the ball pretty well on offense. It was the rebounds that did us in. I’ll take this effort every night though.

Good game

We hung with a well-coached team with lots of options, a superstar, a couple of stars, a supporting cast that knows its role and a damn good young coach. A few more boards, a few more stops, a few more stops and it goes the other way. I’m liking our lineup a lot.

Shawes simply cannot be a starting C unless you put a rebounding maniac next to him.

by sactown on Mar 2, 2010 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

You don't think his rebounding can't get better?

I like Spencer’s offensive gifts and how he facilitates the offensive flow…and when he gets blocks, all the better…I’m sure that coach westphal is stressing the importance of grabbing the defensive rebounds on all the post players(not just Spence).

Rebounding also requires a like for the fight

And Spencer’s interest in fighting for the boards fluctuates throughout games. If he can find a mean streak, he’d be a very good rebounder.

There's nothing to fear but everything.

by elfboy_ on Mar 2, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

Rebounding is

desire + instinct + training + physicality.

Spencer can be trained (e.g. knowing that the majority of rebounds go long). He can up his desire. He can attempt to be more physical. But the rebounding instinct (e.g. simply knowing where the rebound is going to go before the shot hits the rim) is lacking. He is always out of position.

by sactown on Mar 3, 2010 5:49 AM PST up reply actions

Most of Hawes rebounding troubles last night was really bad defense by other guys, resulting in Hawes helping, when you’re the help defender at the rim, you’re not getting many rebounds.

Of course some was Hawes too, there were a couple rebounds I was disappointed he didn’t get, but the majority of the rebounding issue last night was the other guys I thought. You can’t be getting beaten to the rim constantly and expect your main help guy to get a lot of rebounds, better perimeter defense would give Hawes more chances to rebound and then if he doesn’t get them, its on him.

What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.

by Grasul on Mar 3, 2010 6:09 AM PST up reply actions

No Excuse for 3 rebounds!

Honestly, I could play an NBA game and get 3 rebounds. It is inexcusable for Spence to be such a crappy rebounder at this point in his career. The problem with he and JT is their inability to comprehend boxing out. I just don’t understand how they can’t figure it out.

by amonk81 on Mar 3, 2010 7:22 AM PST up reply actions

we're obviously seeing different things

when we watch the games.

He’s not going to get many offensive rebounds playing from the high post most of the time, and he’s not going to get a lot of defensive rebounds when on nearly half of the plays he’s leaving his man to help someone else so the focus is on the help, not on boxing his guy out and rebounding.

These factors add to the fact he’s not a good rebounder in the first place, which he needs to work on.

You can just look at the stat sheet if you want, but I think you’re probably missing something pretty important.

What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.

by Grasul on Mar 3, 2010 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

My dream would be

Trading jt to a team with a top 5 pick then signing booZer. Boozer and hawes in the post would be nice because boozer gets a lot of boards. Then landry would be our 3rd big with two top 10 picks coming this year

elfboy, I agree that 'rebounding also requires a like for the fight'....

but if I were Spencer Hawes (which I admittedly am not) a good motivation for hitting the defensive glass would be that the coach will bench me it I don’t make an effort at improving my rebounding. It seems to me that avoiding ‘riding the pine’ should be motivation enough; I don’t see Paul Westphal going anywhere else anytime soon.
