I think it has been

Kevin is really helping them out right now, Landry’s helping us, the Artest trade REALLY helped us, we’ll see what Temple can provide.

I'm really surprised they didn't just sign him for the rest of the season

He’s played pretty well for them, and Lowry is still a week plus from being ready to return. Maybe they have another backup PG in mind for a couple of 10 day contracts, to save a few bucks.

Rick has been using a 3 guard rotation of Brooks, Martin and Budinger the last couple of games. So maybe they’re just happy to ride with that.

Yeah I think that money is the case

Temple isn’t in their long term plan so better to just let him go and try to have an opportunity else where than lock him up as a bench guy when Lowry comes back.

Maybe

They probably like dealing with each other since Morey and Petrie are both really smart GMs. And honestly, their trades have been pretty good for both sides. Artest helped them get past the second round while Donte and Omri have helped our rebuild. Kevin gives them some much needed guard depth, and Landry gives us a consistent front court player.

I know what you mean.

I honestly thought we’d keep Temple – 6’6" guys who can even play point a little don’t grow on trees, and he can defend all the way up to the 3 in some cases.

All time minutes played leader at LSU – he’s durable at least.

Garret Temple

14.9 points in 34.9 minutes in the D-league, 37.2 from 3 (Wow) 3.7 boards 3.4 assists 2.3 turnovers

Here is a couple positive paragraphs about him : "There is very little not to like about Temple in terms of natural physical gifts. He has outstanding size for a guard coupled with an enormous wingspan. He also has fairly smooth (although not freakish) athleticism, although his frame and overall bulk leave a lot to be desired.

The bulk of Temple’s scoring comes via transition, largely in part because he is so unassertive in half-court sets. He runs the pick and roll awfully well for a big guard, making good decisions and coming off of screens close in order to exert maximum effort out of the defense. Passing is an area that he certainly excels in, producing a nice assist to turnover ratio and assist numbers fairly uncommon for someone standing 6’6."

You missed the important part

While there are many traits that may draw you to Temple, there are equally as many traits that he could use work on. Most glaring is the fact that he is an incredibly limited offensive player, producing the second worst scoring rate of any player in our NCAA database.

Temple is a stud on the defensive end, however. His enormous wingspan and solid quickness allow him to get out in the passing lanes and create a ton of deflections. Able to stay in front of his man laterally, his length enables him to block a substantial number of shots for a player playing the guard position. Defensive potential is without a doubt one of the main selling points of Temple as a prospect.

Let me rephrase

We’re a team with almost no depth at guard. He should get some PT.

Who are these ten-day contract players you apparently speak of that get zero playing time? What is the point of signing the guy to such a short contract unless you’re going to give yourself a legitimate chance to evaluate the player?

WHOA. Relax.

All I know is that not every move made in the NBA makes sense, like signing a guy for 10 days so you can play him.

However, as the point was made above, Beno was probably pissed Westphal off and is planning on benching him. So it is nice to have some added depth.

He's much more a combo guard than swingman. He's a legit PG, and he's large.

It could be a very nice combo with Evans, as Temple is a good defender. I was sorry to see him go.

by Ice_9ine on Mar 2, 2010 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I think with Evans it doesn't matter.

Play both, let Evans do what he does, and put Temple on the bigger backcourt scoring threat.

In terms of bringing up the ball, I guess I’d let Evans do it if it’s really important to him.

Temple isn’t as slick with the ball as Udrih I think. He can hit an open three, and is good in transition, though. He’ll get a lot of steals simply by putting his arm out into passing lanes, as Williams learned in an otherwise painful outing for us.

This sort of thing puzzles me too.

There almost seems to be a groupthink mentality among NBA teams, where there is an orthodoxy about who the best players in the draft are. Teams that go against that can be rewarded, either with Darko, or Dirk, I guess.

I think the consensus is pretty good for about 8-10 picks, but after that…

I think the fact that Temple played so many minutes, yet scored very few points at LSU hurt him a lot. My thinking might be, with a program that has been as good as LSU, why would they play this guy for 4 years in spite of not scoring? A 6’6" combo guard from a good program? Wouldn’t he be worth a 2nd rounder?

Maybe I’ve completely over reacted to what I’ve seen, but I saw a very useful guy, even if only the 9th man or something.
