And from Jimmy Spencer of NBA.com

Reke is out at least a week with a bruised jaw and concussion. Link to that as well.

This is good news

because it could’ve been worse. Hopefully Reke will take care of himself and take his time. Concussions are nothing to play with.

I see him back after the road trip though. He’s a tough kid and he would want to come back. The only question will be, would the docs let him?

I wouldn't be at all surprised

If Reke tries to come back on the first game of the road trip against Jersey on Wednesday. He’s a tough kid. I would rather he sit the road trip, but I have no control over the situation and obviously don’t know how he feels.

yes, except Hot Carl concussed Dirk's elbow and it had to sit out some games

and his cracked teeth were surgically removed from Diggler’s appendage. (yes, I wanted to put Diggler and appendage in the same sentence)

by betweentheeyes on Mar 20, 2010 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

busted lips get sutured and thats all. cracked teeth you see a dentist and they fix it-you don't feel it beyond that.

the thing that’s concerning is the concussion-the rest is no worse than a black eye in terms of ability to return to basketball. It sucks to be sure but thankfully his jaw is alright.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".

But I agree that he should sit the road trip. Unfortunately, I have no control either.

Flagrant - should be a suspension

I just reviewed the play again and it is clear that more force was applied after the initial contact. It seems clear that this should be a flagrant 2. I submitted a complaint requesting review of the play and player suspension.

Anybody else so inclined here is the link.

Have you guys watched it again?

You can see what he did after contact. That was NOT just going for the ball. He had the damn ball already and came down on Tyreke. He then extended his elbow out and put more force into it.

by MustangMBS on Mar 20, 2010 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I have it on my DVR

I am going to have to buy the software to pull it off. To me it clearly shows that he extended the elbow out with added force. Since his elbow was connecting with Tyreke’s head that qualifies as a flagrant.

NBA rule book, page 18.

A flagrant foul is unnecessary and/or excessive contact committed by a player against
an opponent whether the ball is dead or alive.

That rule doesn't really help us

As it’s still a matter of opinion (and perception). I saw nothing in what Iylasova did that was malicious. Battling for rebounds, especially late in close games, is rough stuff. This is a unfortunate byproduct of having a point guard that likes to be in the paint.

Tell you what, if a Kings player got called for a flagrant foul on a similar play…I’d be pretty pissed off.

Additionally, I haven’t seen any comment from the Kings staff or players that they felt it was dirty??

he basically had his entire forearm slam into the left side of Reke’s Jaw and head. Kind of knocked his head back, pretty sure that was what caused the concussion.

I think the elbow was an accident

when he turned toward Reke he made a conitinuous motion that pushed him to the ground…I thinl that was just a reflex push but even if it had intent the push wasn’t forceful. I checked the replay last nite to see if it causes Reke’s head to hit the ground, but it didn’t (hit the ground). The elbow looked inadvertant to me.

There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.

by ElRonToro on Mar 20, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Reke's head never hit the ground ElRon; that's why I'm surprised there was even a concussion

Partly I’m surprised, though, because Reke walked off the floor under his own power.

As far as the push, I saw it but I saw it more of an arm extended to clear space so that the ball couldn’t be ripped from his (Ilyasova’s) hands. Maybe I’m alone in that.

None of this mentions that the first body part of Reke’s to hit the ground was his knee. I hope his knee isn’t hurting because that looked very bad in it’s own right.

Agree with all of it

The elbow didn’t seem to have enough force to cause a concussion, maybe Reke had more forward momentum than it appeared, I had a “walking concussion” once when my head hit the wall after a feeble attempt by me to play the defense I was always so morally opposed to as a player, I was woozy for a day or 2 and headache for 3 but I never went out and walked off the floor with no assistance, though not being all that positive of where I was headed. I doubt if he’ll be gone a week unless secondary injuries (such as the knee that hit the ground) cause problems

There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.

Grant is self-ripping

All I did was make an observation. Now let’s see how it plays out.

I wanted to wait to pine but I just lost my desire. But what the hell...

I have already spewed my diatribe on officiating and how the game is called. In the end I would like to interject an observation having watched the clip a dozen times.

The play is initiated by a missed shot by Carl Landry who jumps up to rebound the ball and actually appears to shove Ilysova who was airborne with Tyreke. If you watch carefully it is eveident that Ilysova doesn’t have body control when the collision with Tyreke occurs mostly likely due to being pushed from Landry trying to rebound the ball.

Furthermore Ilysova’s elbow which makes contact with Tyreke’s face probably connected like a boxing jab on the button giving Tyreke a stinger or ringing his bell. I too denounce a concussion but do believe he did see some tweety birds chirping overhead but was a result of the fall and the lack of balance not by any deliberate force or subsequently by Tyreke’s head hitting the floor.

Mustang, you need to review the tape again and focus on Carl. I think you will see that his contact into Ilysova is really the culprit here.

Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

If you are in the air, shoved from behind such that you end up on your back at the same time as Tyreke...

Which appears to me to be the case given the only angle I have seen, the elbow extension is a natural bodily reaction to regain balance before landing on the ground. Tyreke was just in a bad spot as he was under a falling guy. He would have incurred the same injury had his own man been stuck in the middle of that rebound.

I see the extension and agree absent any other contact or if body control was in place that the extended elbow could be excessive or intentional. But since Landry initiated the contact (he has both hands on Ilysova’s back before he jumps and then is over his back while Ilysova was airborne, the subsequent elbow to Tyreke cannot be deduced to be flagrant or excessive.

In other words, if you push me and I elbow someone else my elbow is negated unless you and I are on the same team.

If you see that the play didn’t happen that way then we can’t have an interpretation of the rules cause we are arguing what you saw versus what I saw.

If you do concur that Landry is guilty of pushing Ilysova either immediately before or at the same time as Ilvosova elbows Tyreke then the discussion shifts to interpreting what could have been called in that situation which includes a loose ball personal foul (which is what the slot official called on the play), a flagrant foul a double foul or a no call.

99.9% of the time an official is not going to call any foul on the subsequent contact and in the rare event of a true double foul as defined in Section III c. (Pg. 18 of Official NBA Rule Book for the 2009 – 2010 Season) as a situation where any two opponents commit personal fouls at approximately the same time, everyone goes bananas as the accepted call is to pick one team to call the foul on.

I do not expect to change your mind but based on what I see from the only angle available to us, I concur with all the other that have previously posted that this was not a flagrant foul.

Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

I've attempted to avoid talking about it

Because it’s really my fault. I busted out the “edm7” guarantee in the second half game thread. Subsequently, Milwaukee wins and injures our best player.

So I’m going to keep that whole thing hush-hush until someone else brings it up.
