The death of WaBeno

It is my fortunate pleasure to inform the StR community of the timely demise of the impostor known as WaBeno.

The time has come for us to revise our previous opinions of the man (17 assists will do that). I submit to you, the community of Sactown Royalty, that it is not the 09/10 version of Beno that is an anomaly. Rather, it was the previous impersonation, Beno 1.2, that was a complete and utter fraud.

The current, upgraded version has performed far beyond the specs and has been known to "hum" contentedly as he consistently exceeds his programming. This years performance has caused me to (finally) acknowledge the fact that Petrie is a genius (All hail Geoff!).  There is very little doubt that we are getting our money's worth and may actually be getting a little more than we bargained for at this point.

I was against trading Martin (and still wish there was some way to keep him....) but there is little doubt that both Evans and Udrih are excelling with the current lineup.

Could we actually have found our PG? Not a "decent" filler, but an honest-to-God, true-blue PG?

WaBeno, R.I.P.

P.S. My first ever post....be gentle.

What do you propose his name be now?

I think WaBeno is here to stay , similar to Goku going super-sayan and staying that way [/DragonBall Z reference]. But I do not think Beno can be a starter for a championship caliber team; instead I’d prefer him as a superb combo-guard backup for either position, providing instant offense off the bench and helping give a rhythm to our bench mob. I’m glad our previously detested Beno has risen from the ashes of the Reggie Theus regime, and is now a dominant force to be reckoned with.

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

i don't know

is it possible we are “under-selling” him? that’s what i was trying to get across….maybe he really is a PG for a champion…. i’m not saying that is for sure, just that i am open to considering it now…..

I couldn't agree with you more.

I’ve felt all season long that Beno was our point guard. I am glad that more people are finally getting on the Beno bandwagon. So be it, if it took 20 points and 17 assists for people to notice. Beno seized the opportunity that presented itself today. I still like the name WaBeno.

To be fair,

When I posted this story back in Decmeber, roughly 75% of the members here voted to keep Beno unless tangible interior help could be had for him.

Beno has certainly had his ups and downs this year – he has been rated a “buy,” “sell,” or “hold” at various times.

that is partly what i am getting at

i have been up and down all year, but maybe i have missed the obvious.

Granted i would take CP3 in a second over Beno, but I don’t think i would take J Kidd over him…maybe he is legit.

We keep talking about how good Casspi and Evans will be after they have played for three years…well isn’t Beno just hitting that three year mark (of getting “real” minutes")?

It wasn't quite that glowing!

Most of those wanted to wait until Martin returned from his injuries before making a decision.

Respectfully disagree

75% said that they wouldn’t take a handful of magic beans to get out of that contract, which was wholly different than the general consensus at the beginning of the season.

Bottom line, Udrih was greatly overpriced at the start of the season in the eyes of the majority of Kings fans. He filled in admirably for most of Martin’s absence, and most Kings fans changed their opinion of Beno. He slumped just prior to Martin’s return, and when Martin went back into the starting lineup, Beno struggled and was again overpriced. Now Martin is gone and Udrih has become at least fair value.

So, given the fact that Udrih’s contract was thought to be worse than Nocioni’s at the beginning of the season, I say that 75% of the fan base not wanting to jettison Udrih just over a month later is indeed a huge swing…glowing, in fact.

A good deal of the season people considered Beno overpriced. You selected one part of the season where people were willing to have him remain while Martin was out.

One part of the season that made up about 1/3 of the season

Simply, he was appreciated earlier in the season as well. I’m not making this up – read the threads from November-December. There was a high level of appreciation for Udrih at that time. The fact that 45% of the folks here wanted to at least wait until Martin came back was a paradigm shift in Beno’s favor, as almost everyone wanted him on the first bus out of town at the beginning of the season, regardless of Kevin Martin’s health. Beno had just about everyone’s support, and then he lost it, and now he has regained it.

If it is your opinion that Beno Udrih was unappreciated this year until just recently, cool. But the threads from earlier this year suggest a different story.

You are persistent.

Actually, I don’t think you and I are all that far apart on where we stand as regarding Beno. I am not saying that Beno was unappreciated this entire season. I am in complete agreement with you on this:

The fact that 45% of the folks here wanted to at least wait until Martin came back was a paradigm shift in Beno’s favor, as almost everyone wanted him on the first bus out of town at the beginning of the season, regardless of Kevin Martin’s health.

I remember this poll and recall being very surprised and pleased by it, because so many people were down on him at the beginning of the season. I also agree with you that he lost this support and now he has regained it. So, I don’t see why we are having this discussion. If you want to continue to argue your point, go for it. I am just very happy to see people supporting Beno. I hope this will end all the discussion that he is not worth his contract and that he should be traded.

I think LPA gets at least a Nostradumbass of the month mod

For being probably the only person to believe at the end of last year that Beno was underrated.

I agree with Shizzo's comment

that I see Beno as more of a super backup for both G positions. At the same time, with how well he’s been playing lately and how good he seems to play with Reke I may be willing to give it a shot and see how much better we are with some frontcourt upgrades and the further development of our young guys.

One thing that’s clear though, Beno is really helping this team and is surely making last year look like the exception, not the rule. While I wanted to get rid of his contract in the past, I may be changing my mind about it. Let’s see how the team looks next season and I’ll have a better opinion on Beno, his contract, and how he fits with this team’s future

Agree

I like the backcourt of Beno/Evans. You have two players that can switch back and forth running the offense. I like Cisco as our backup SG…and then eventually (after a refined frontcourt) I’d like to see the addition of a killer backup pg. Ala BJax in his prime. Thats what we need, but again thats down the line when were closer to being in the playoff hunt.

Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

WaBeno has been great as of late

With that said I was pondering our roster moments before reading this and do believe he would be super valuable on a contender and that he has good value for us. We need another combo/guard, but one that can defend the super speedy guards along with that coveted interior defender.

But that is not truly a response but another subject that has been covered ad-nausea and will continue to get plenty of coverage. So I say we keep the name WaBeno as it makes us appreciate what he brings us even more after seeing the ugly version. And if you are an extreme homer like me, you will always tend to be a bit Pollyanna-ish and think our guy is a bit better than he really is.

So go Wabeno the Yeti warrior.
