Tonight's game vs. The Nets

I consider tonights game one of the most important games remaining this season. The Nets are running our of time to get wins, and they have a tough schedule from here on out. From their perspective, tonight is one of their best chances to get a win. I for one, DO NOT want to lose to (potentially) the worst team in history. I am really hoping the guys come out fired up and dont let this game get close.

Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

Good point

Personally, it seems like the team has done a good job of coming out with a passion and drive to win most of the games this season. There have been a few lackluster efforts along the way, but those are to be expected.

I don't think this will be a lackluster game

Coming off the loss to Memphis at home, and no Tyreke tonight. I expect PW to have the team focused on this game and the task at hand. Wabeno should have another huge night. Need a good game from Casspi or Greene though to help.

I personally don't care as long as the Kings play hard.

If the Nets get hot or whatever or play their best game of the season, them winning is not an anomaly in that scenario. The Kings shouldn’t lose this game if they have Tyreke.

On the other hand, the Bobcats are a 500 team and have lost to the Nets twice. Surely they aren’t all that awful are they?

I could care less about the Bobcats. I care about the Kings. I do not want the team to lose to a team that is worse than them ever. I especially don’t want to lose to the team that could potentially have the worst record ever.

I’m rooting for this team to be better for the next decade not the next 11 games. I trust in Petrie but there is no reason not to give him every advantage and by that I mean the most amount of ping pong balls possible and if that doesn’t work out then the highest pick possible. Damn me if you will but that is just how I see this situation.

I like the idea of finishing the season strong and that carrying over to the next season

We’ll have a lottery pick no matter what. However, the Kings’ draft position probably won’t change too much unless they win or lose every game.

There is a big difference between finishing with the 4th worst record or the 10th worst record.

The Kings are right in the middle of a huge pack of teams and can finish anywhere from 2 to 10. I just don’t see how a few momentum going into the summer games helps this team when more than a couple of these guys might not be back next season. I’m not saying give it up but I do want to see Donte, Omri, MrGuire, Dorsey, Brockman when healthy and not Udoka, Noc or May which should take care of the issue at hand. I’m also not opposed to a 10 day NBDL contract to a PG with upside to fill in while Reke is out.

In theory

Since this team wasn’t making the playoffs this season, wouldn’t you have started the year rooting for them to go 0-82?

How is that fandom?

I just don’t get the concept of getting even younger at this point, I really don’t. The other young teams in the league are way ahead of us in development, so let’s win some games, take our top-10 pick in the draft and our cap space and let Petrie do his thing.

Any team can beat any other team any given game

I have to agree with both points. Any loss bothers me, but at the same time any team can win a game. Even the Nets can come out and compete and losing to them could happen. They are at home and we are without Tyreke. That makes a difference.

Sure there is the Bobcats, but they also beat the Celtics. The Celtics lost and they aren’t a crappy team. Bad teams win games and there is no shame in losing if the Kings tried hard and played to win.

by vfettke on Mar 24, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

It's like money that eats into cap space.

You’d have Curry, Galinari, Douglas and Chandler on the cap because they have contracts. But you would have also Lee’s cap hold (T-Mac’s too, but we all know he’s going to get renounced anyway), to factor in the situation, and it would be something like 17 million dollars. (Rough guestimate. I’m too lazy to look at Coon’s FAQ and figure the exact number.) With 33 million in cap room, you’re talking about 1 max free agent to sign until you sign Lee and remove his cap hold.

So Gallinari will be Lebron's back-up?

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Mar 24, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Stop with the Lee scenarios.

The Knicks can’t use their bird rights to sign Lee if they sign 2 Max Free Agents. It isn’t possible because of cap holds.

I'll make this easy for everyone to understand

Douglas, Chandler, Curry and Gallinari make just under 17.8 million combined (most of that is Curry’s fat ass). David Lee makes 7 million this season and you have to factor in his cap hold (if you want to keep his bird rights) which is 300% of his salary this season.

The Knicks salary, until they renounce Lee, would effectively be about 38.7 million in terms of cap room come summertime assuming they renounce everyone else on the current roster come July.

Make sense now?

And that would be 38.7 million of committed cap space with a projected 53.7 salary cap for next season.

That would mean the Knicks only have 15 million in cap room if they don’t renounce Lee. Hopefully this makes sense. I never want to have this conversation ever again for any reason.

There is more to this story.

If you take the 4 knicks you already mentioned that are under contract for next year, you also have to add cap holds. First up, the Knicks have their own players caps- Lee, Duhon, T-Mac /every other player on their roster. If the Knicks wipe those clean by renouncing their rights, they have 17.8 + 8 cap holds for the veterans minimum ($450,000ish) which must also be considered. In effect, the Knicks already have 21.4 (give or take a few 100Ks) already committed to next season before they enter free agency. If the cap drops to 54 million, then they are down to roughly 32.6 million in available cap space, which is not enough for two max money players. For every Super Star they sign, that does two things, eats up space and, it releases one of those $450,000 cap holds. To complicate or clarify this issue, the Knicks do not have a mid-level exception or any other exemption because they are under the cap so in order to sign 2 SS players, they have to renounce Lee and all other players that have bird rights as well as all exemptions. So we won’t see this- LaBron @ 17 mill + Bosh @ 17 mill + Lee @ 6 mill MLE + T-mac @ 1.7 Excemption + 4 other veteran minimum players.

C-Webb was on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN show either yesterday or today (the days run together when you got no where to be) and he said that if LaBron goes to NY, it will be as a Net in his opinion because of Lopez, Harris and Jay-Z, not the Knicks because they just can’t put a team around him any time soon. I like his thinking on this and I believe that it will be more likely that the Knicks strike out with LaBron, Wade, Bosh and turn to Amare or Joe Johnson, resign Lee and add another mid-level guy to make this thing work.

I know Pookey-

but he 8 cap holds that automatically eat up the cap space is what I thought was really important. It’s one thing to sign two big time players but the Knicks are going to have to do that as well as fit 6-8 other players under their cap where the Kings have plenty of cap space plus a top 10 pick and 10-11 players under contract and the Nets are in a similar situation. The Knicks are in pretty deep to this whole two super star bullshit they have spun to their fan base.

I have a really hard time believing that the Kings won’t be major players in this whole free agency period if they really want to be. The current talent is just so close to being really good and adding a top tier pick has to be enticing to a player that wants to win now and for the next 5-6 years.

I think we are all in agreement here.

LaBron to NJ makes way too much sense. New stadium, promising young big and quality point guard. I personally think he is an idiot if he stays in Cleavland. They are getting older and the role players they have are only complimentary to him, not stand alone talent. Boobie, DeLonte, Moe Williams, Anderson Verajo ect. make for a quality group if the King is running the show but let’s be honest here, the reason the Lakers are the team to beat is because if Kobe goes down or has a bad few games, he has a group of all-stars to pick him up and continue the winning where Labron has a group of chowder heads. Think Bulls circa Jordan first retirement but without the services of Scottie Pippen- not a pretty sight at all.
