Kings Waive Joey Dorsey

For reasons unexplained, the Kings have waived forward Joey Dorsey. Coach Paul Westphal apparently thought so little of the young rebounder that Dorsey couldn't even get into a game against the Cavs in which Jason Thompson played a full 48 minutes at center.

Best of luck to Dorsey, who belongs in this league.

Wow, now that is crazy.

Dorsey must have said the right grouping of words. Very strange turn of events for a guy who should have found a nice home here as a bench rebounder/enforcer. I hope this is the end of Joey Dorsey as an NBA player because that is one mean mother-Fer and I would hate to see what he might do to the Kings big’s the next time they meet up.

Very very disappointed Dorsey’s no longer around.

Does this mean the Kings are looking to pick someone up?

This is interesting

I do wonder why, but who knows? It’s not any real biggie to me one way or the other than I don’t see the advantage of moving Dorsey unless you’re bringing in players.

I think Mustafa Shakur and Will Conroy might both be Kings come tomorrow.

They had 14 roster spots used before waiving Dorsey (unless I'm missing something--which is possible)

So technically they didn’t need to waive Dorsey if they were going to bring Shakur or Conroy in. But if they wanted, or needed, to bring both in? They would have to waive somebody and that somebody probably ended up being Dorsey.

Although, I do wonder why the Kings couldn’t have waived McGuire regardless of injury.

This is weird...

McGuire out for the season and they don’t waive him? Yet you waive a guy who could play when we have Spencer, Brockman, and May out with injuries? We could be like Portland was and not have a Center if something goes wrong.

Sounds to me like somebody else wants Dorsey and GP is doing a favor for later return.. Only thing that makes sense is that Dorsey is picked up by someone, but then again may something is wrong in the lockerroom. Why else would PW not play him the last game?

As far as letting Dorsey go for a favor

That doesn’t happen in this league. Maybe Dorsey asked to be waived and the Kings obliged him.

I can too.

I don’t really know why now. I don’t really see Dorsey being a huge disruption now anymore than he was 3 weeks ago.

Something tells me this has to do with Cisco and the Kings are preparing for Conroy and Shakur coming to the team.

With McGuire hurt you couldn't waive him

(well you could but you’d have to pay him anyway and as a hurt player I think he still takes a roster spot)

As for Dorsey, I questioned a week or two ago why he wasn’t getting at least a few minutes when we played the very large [redacted]s.

I’m guessing it was locker room/ practice stuff.

I wish Dorsey the best of luck, I’ve liked him since college and I think he’s shown remarkable growth over the last couple of seasons. He deserves to be in this league, and I thought he deserved a place on this team through the remainder of the season. Only time will tell.

It sounds like Andrew Nichols (or what ever that guys name is) asked the roster question-

and then Jason Jones followed up the “oh yeah, we waived Joey Dorsey” with a how about that Beno Udrih guy… Very poor follow up questions there by Jones. How about, “What happened with Dorsey?” or “Are the Kings bringing someone in from the NBDL?”.

And you know players have problems with a certain redhead, do you break the news to the public that Dorsey was an asshole behind the scenes? Or do you let the asshole redhead do it for you saving you time to get PW’s real thoughts on players in the rotation that are actually helping the team?

If that’s the way Jone’s wants to do his job then let’s hope he get’s replaced asap. Maybe he needs to improve his interview/questioning skills, maybe he isn’t comfortable but that follow up question was written on his note pad earlier in the day and he didn’t listen to a word Westphal said or he would have at least asked.

Because 1 of the 12 or 13 players on the team you are covering was waived in season.

I’m pretty confused why you are defending him here. Before Napes broke the story you and me and other were speculating what happened here. We were speculating because a beat reporter with access didn’t ask basic follow-up 101. If I’m not mistaken, the Will Solomon comments had already run before he was waived so when it happened, it wasn’t a surprise.

I don't remember Solomon's comments

But I do remember it was a relief. There was only 2 possibilities. Dorsey either asked out or the Kings let him go because they didn’t want to deal with his attitude. But, I’m more interested in the followup of this than I am of the actual waiving.

The only problem I really have is that there isn’t a lot of reason for Jones to say why that is. He’s got to interview these guys and all that.

I’m not bitter about it. I just really disagree and think Jason Jones did the right thing not saying anything. He’s not obligated to spread gossip about the team.

For a team that’s having defensive low post problems, you waive a young guy that appears to have some potential…why was he waived? Simple, easy, straightforward question.

kings need medium rare or more at this point. the kings probably weren’t going to keep him at season’s end so why not let him go and give him a chance elsewhere. the kings eventually have to have “veteran” players. we have a young nucleus so we can’t keep all the young players. dorsey went the way of justin williams a few years back. seemed like the bench center we needed when given the opportunity played hard and well but didn’t get the minutes necessary to continue the experiment.

I like this

in the sense that the Kings front office are looking at the future (we knew they were, I know) but they are making sure that the team is working not only on the floor but also off the floor.

We’re slowly building a core and they are protecting it, by making sure everyone is on the same page and making sure the chemistry is there,

But aren't Dwight Howard and Shaq both clowns as well?

And they are/were big parts of their team. It’s not a bad thing to have fun in the locker room, it helps keep the team loose and happy. JT and Omri could both learn to loosen up a bit. But on the other hand, if he is clowning around and not practicing and letting it affect his game, that’s another thing and then I can agree with the decision (although I would have liked to see if they could work on his attitude rather than just dumping him. Could have been a big reward for the risk.)

I know you didn't mean it that way

but you just compared one of the best C in the history of this game and arguably the best C in the L right now, to Joey Dorsey.

Whether it was a small incident or something a bit bigger, the front office and coaching staff doesn’t have to put up with what they (obviously) viewed as a ‘conduct detrimental to the team’ from a 12th man.

It’s not always JUST about basketball.

I wasn't comparing them as basketball players

I was just pointing out that their attitudes may be similar and it hasn’t been an issue to the teams that shaq and howard were on. I used them also cuz they are easily recognizable names. But you are probably right. Maybe the fact that Howard and Shaq are at the top, their actions are seen from a different angle than that of a low bench player. I concede to you, you win.

This whole Dorsey thing is not a big deal so I don’t want to make it bigger than it is. I just appreciate the front office and coaching staff protecting the young players, even when it’s a small detail.

I guess I just like the way OKC is going about building their team. Chemistry and how the players seem to be all be on the same page is something that I think is very important going forward.

Well Dorsey is decent at best but can help out with some toughness on the defensive end but oh well guess that won’t be happening!

Knicks fan here

Dorsey was almost sent to the Knicks in the original Sacramento-less McGrady Rockets-Knicks trade proposal. I thought he sounded intriguing, and I’m wondering if the Knicks will pick him up now. There is probably something wrong with his attitude, I’m thinking.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your discussion about Dorsey – thanks! And we’ll see you in the finals in a couple of years (cough)

Apparently

He complained about his playing time. We all know how Westy feels about that.

Ouch

This still doesn’t fall below Dorsey getting kicked out of Summer League game while dressed in street clothes.

And the “raw Dwight Howard” comment is hilarious.

Did you see him cross over that white kid!

I am ashamed that we watched that youtube video.

The Sacramento Convergence concept offers Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the State a solution to feasibly construct a new multi-use Entertainment and Sports Complex.

Dorsey had been late to workouts since the Kings acquired him Feb. 18 in the three-team trade involving Kevin Martin.

A knock on Dorsey in Houston was his work ethic. Westphal declined to discuss the player’s situation with the Kings.

“Let’s just say we decided to waive him and leave it at that,” Westphal said.

Well so much for Jones not adding in the reason.
