I'm a long time lover of the Kings who just started posting on Sactown Royalty leading up to this year's trade deadline.
I'm on record saying that I love the Kmart trade, as I think that Landry is step in the right direction and all that Kings could hope for in return for Kmart in terms of talent and salary implications. Just to clear the cap space, I would've supported Kmart and Noc/K9 for Ray Allen's or Tmac's expiring contract. So to get a very good player, who fills several needs ... at $3MM per ... what's not to like?
In my view, addition by subtraction. Why? The 2 is the easiest position to fill in today's NBA. While it's nice to dream about Joe Johnson or Chris Bosh coming to Sacto via FA, I'm proposing that GP realizes that the 2 best players in this year's draft, without question, are J Wall of KU and E Turner of OSU. Either one of these 2 would form an incredible backcourt with Tyreke at fraction of what the Kings were paying Kmart - they play D, they board, they can't be stopped getting to the rim, with tons of UPSIDE ... they're a lot like Tyreke!
Turner and Wall are potential superstars that can do it all IMO. And they're both guards. Wall would play 1, moving Reke to 2 (but Turner would play 2, leaving Reke at 1). If the Lottery doesn't give the Kings either the #1 or #2, maybe they plan go all-in to move up in the draft?! That's my hope.
What will GP do to make it happen? The Kings #1 (obviously), their #2 and Donte' Green? JT? Throw in Noc if anybody will take him. I know the cost ultimately depends on where the Kings are drafting (more if they're at 7-10, less if they're 3-5).
What do you think? With Landry, JT and Hawes creating a serviceable 4/5 rotation with upside, and Omri and Cisco (and Donte' if he stays) splitting time at 3/2, and Beno on the bench .... and dollars left over to pursue another big man in FA if necessary, isn't that a team you'd pay to watch?!
None of the Big Men in the draft are that much of an improvement over what Kings have in Mandry, JT and Hawes, although we all know the team could use more shot-blocking/rebounding, but Wall and Turner? Add one of those players to what we have and the Kings should be competing for the playoffs at 40-45+ wins in 2010/11.
What would you give up to obtain Wall or Turner? And can GP do it?
