Yeppers -

That Bill Simmons is one funny guy. What a sense of humor. Who knew that Tyreke was holding all of that fine teammate talent back? Bill did. Thanks for finally getting the truth out, Bill. The Kings are a talent-laden ballclub that would flourish if someone else were running the show. Stop it, Bill. My sides are aching.

I may be wrong...

but I think he just said Tyreke is a franchise player while Curry is a complementary player.

And that’s the reason he didn’t like Evans with Durant. 2 franchise players might not play well together. After all, Shaq and Kobe did go their separate bitter ways…

ive been dealing with idiots like bill simmons all day today. CURRY IS NOT THE ROY!!! Its rookie of the YEAR! Not rookie of QUARTER A YEAR! Tyreke is hands down winning this award. If not i will personally write a 500 dollar check to each and every one of the members of GSOM.

He also thought Adam Morrison was going to be great. Not okay, not decent, not good, but GREAT. He makes a legit argument about the Thunder passing on Reke since they already have a PG that can can get to the basket at will. He’s just in love with Curry like everyone else because he looks like he’s 11.

Let me rephrase this

Simmons isn’t a dope. He just goes with the current popular thinking when he’s lazy and doesn’t feel like arguing differently. He will argue flash over substance when it suits him, and argue substance over flash when it suits him. Basically, he feels like whatever he argues.

His assertion that the players in Sac don’t like to play with him is false. It’s based off things like Kevin Martin (regardless of the reasons why) and how players look or react when Tyreke is looking for his shot. Well, no shit sherlock! Players always want their shots.

Simmons also did a bit of a reversal on Chris Paul vs Deron Williams (nevermind that both were incredible) after spending years of saying that Chris Paul was clearly so many times better than Williams (despite Williams playing on better teams with better “talent”).

Simmons used to be OK writing basketball. He lost his marbles a few years ago writing baseball. However, this season he hasn’t written one good basketball article . . . I think he’s fallen out of touch with this sport too. Christ, he wrote 10,000 word essay on Rasheed Wallace sucking and it was a serious breakdown! Really, who was interested in reading this?

You’re right, he did a complete reversal on Chris Paul vs Deron Williams while doing his best gloss over how over the top sure he was that Paul was the superior PG, no question asked, any argument is ridiculous, you are a Mormon homer hack if you believe otherwise stance he used to have.

He’s hardly been complimentary of Tyreke. He wrote a retro draft in January or February and still had Reke getting picked 4th. He’s so engrossed with his Celtic pains and over the top man crush on Durant he hasn’t paid attention to the rest of the league.

I used to read all of BS but stopped about two years ago.

He was great, but it’s hard to maintain quality and content at the volume he’s been pumping them out. Much of his writing focused on past memories, and he’s pretty much used up his life shore of interesting stories. He needs to move on to a more producer/editor-level role, finding great content out in the wild and bringing it to the mainstream fold, because I’m sure he can still recognize quality writing. You hear that Bill? You’re washed up, but get over yourself and move on with our life because it happens to everyone. 30 for 30 is bomb-diggity though, and you should continue to do stuff like that. Start your own website even and hire writers you find provoking, and limit the amount of writing you do so that when you do come out with stuff it remains quality-Bill. Because I don’t want you doing this schtick when I’m 45 and I have to try to explain to my kids how good you used to be.

I think Simmons is okay for what he is. An enjoyable read.

Just take his analysis of any team with a name not beginning with C with a grain of salt. His ROY take loses all credibility because he thinks that handgun in Pulp Fiction held 25 rounds.

People should stop becoming so defensive if anyone says anything in favor of someone other than Tyreke becoming ROY. Most of us here believe that Tyreke is going to win it. Not everyone feels the same way. Just let it play itself out.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

by Slam_Dunk on Apr 17, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't care what Bill Simmons says but really?

His argument for the Thunder better of with Curry over Tyreke was fine but his argument for Curry being ROY is the worst, laziest, bullshit argument I have ever heard. It was downright awful. I have heard some decent arguments for Curry & some bad ones but this was the worst.

It belongs on a GSOM thread. It would actually be one of the worst comments on the thread. He might as well have gone babyface4you & said " If Curry were on the King’s they’d have 50 wins with all that talent."

Also as much as I don’t like Don Nelson he is a master at match-ups & getting the best out of mediocre players. He will never win a championship but if he were the coach of the Kings we might finished with 35 wins. I think PW was coaching for the future which is better but Nelson would have figured out a way to make every bench player talent guy on our team our team look like a star. We would have had teams beating down our door for Andres Nocioni & Spencer Hawes at the trade deadline. Also Cisco if he was healthy & we sure would have recieved a better deal for Martin.

I am in no way endorsing or praising Nelson. I think he is a very gimmicky coach who will never take you anywhere but the first or second round of the playoffs, maybe but definitely not to a championship.

I love beating dead horses.

by allbenji's on Apr 17, 2010 3:10 PM PDT reply actions

Bill Simmons' initials describe his argument for Curry as ROY perfectly. Coincidence?

In all seriousness, I don’t have much of an opinion on Simmons. I obviously disagree with some of what he said, but the weird thing is that there was a somewhat decent argument he could’ve made buried deep down there. Instead of saying that Tyreke played with a more talented team (I honestly think the two teams are more or less equal), he could’ve said that Tyreke benefitted from playing with a more consistent lineup of players throughout the season, because of GS’s injuries, and that would’ve been a valid point. It wouldn’t change my mind for who deserves ROY, but I don’t think we could have really argued that Tyreke had some level of consistency that Curry did not.

Then again, his whole argument would’ve been nullfied by his comment about him thinking Curry looked like more fun to play with. Because apparently fun = better player. It might just be me, but I don’t think it would be particularly fun to play with someone like, say, Kevin Garnett. He’s a great player and I like his intensity, but he doesn’t seem like the most FUN person on the court. Talent and fun are separate qualities.

fact is if Curry was on the Kings

Martin would still be on the team and yes the Kings would be a better team. You can not argue against that. Reke and KMart could not coexist however Curry and KMart would have been SWEEEET!!!!

I think Kevin would still want out.

Kevin wasn’t upset that Tyreke took his franchise tag from him. He was upset that he was stuck on a young team that is facing potentially 2 or 3 seasons of development, a lack of recognition and respect by the rest of the League, a coach and GM who would rather focus on the development of a young star than catering to him, and his own injury problems.

I don’t see how Curry changes any of that.

Even more, I don’t see how the Kings are better off with Curry and Martin than Evans and Landry (and cap room. Yeah, while you Warriors fans are stuck with an uncertain future as far as owner’s, front office, and coach, you are also facing long-term deals to Maggette and Ellis that will make it harder to stomach any changes in the CBA. Meanwhile, the Kings have had the same owner’s for over a decade, some of the best young owner’s in the League, and a sneaky smart GM who has been there through it all and will be even longer, and finally a decent coach who will be around for awhile and has something to prove.)

So, please, Curry may, MAY, end up being a better player than Evans (doubtful) but he is in a better situation and will have a better chance to succeed.

How do you or anyone know if Martin & Tyreke could coexist?

I believe the possibility of KM & Reke not coexisting was the last factor in the Martin trade.

The coaching staff didn’t think highly of KM.
They wouldn’t develop a system that fit Tyreke’s & KM’s style because of it.
Kevin felt slighted by the coaching staff so he wanted out.
The fans & the King’s radio personality turned against him.
Coachie, who damn near raised KM in his first few seasons in the NBA started to doubt him even.
With all of these factors KM WANTED out
He was always injured
Cap space to sign or trade for a max player or another very good player/players
Getting a low post version of KM was more important for our team because of our lack of a low post “go to” guy for cheap

All of these factors were the reasons why KM was traded. If the team wanted to make Tyreke & KM work I believe they could have. They did nothing to even try.

If you didn’t see any of this than you obviously don’t follow the Kings.

I love beating dead horses.

I considered a response to this

And honestly decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Simmons says:

I never watched a Warriors game without thinking, “Curry would be fun to play with” at least once. I can’t say the same about Evans.

But I’ll pretty much guarantee that he caught glimpses of games on League Pass, and a couple games when the Kings or Dubs were playing Boston. Other than that, I’m pretty sure he never bothered to watch those teams.

Simmons is an entertaining writer. He generates controversy, such as this, which gets people to talk about his articles, like we are. That’s what he does. He comes up with interesting angles and opinions, even if they aren’t always right. Hell, we’re critiqued for cherry-picking the 20-5-5 stat, but there’s no way we could have ever come up with something as absurd as this:

the first rookie ever to average 17 points and two 3s per game and top 85 percent free throw shooting and 40 percent 3-point shooting

.

Don’t get upset about Simmons. It’s not worth it. In a few years he’ll be on the Tyreke bandwagon again. That’s right, I said again. Remember? He loved Tyreke at mid season.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

he might actually already be on the ’Reke Bandwagon. This was from his most recent post on ESPN:

My “So Much Better To Watch In Person Than On TV” Team for the 2009-10 Season: Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade (guards); Kevin Durant, LeBron James, (forwards); Dwight Howard (center); Josh Smith, Westbrook, Rajon Rondo, Tyreke Evans, Gerald Wallace, Pau Gasol, Amare Stoudemire (bench); Anthony Randolph, Yao Ming, Eddy Curry (injured list).
