Gauging the Paranoia of the Average Kings Fan
Prototype for Sacramento Kings Tin Foil Lottery Hat.
In a thread earlier today, I mentioned that I would take the 3rd pick in the draft right now and run like hell. I don't know if that is a result of my conservative nature, or whether it is the residual effect of having little go my way as a lifelong Sacramento Kings (and San Francisco Giants) fan. But for me, the chance of moving up one or two spots is not worth dropping as many as three spots.
Not that it matters, because we are all going on this ride whether we like it or not, but -

I haven't seen many of the players...
would having the 1st or 2nd pick necessarily benefit us more than having the 3rd? Is John Wall that much better for our team than Cousins or Favors?
"The Kings have nothing to lose but their games."
In my opinion,
there are a couple of talent breaks at this point in time, but that could certainly change in the next several weeks.
1-2: Wall and Turner are the two surest fire NBA products, and both are likely ready to make an immediate contribution.
3-4: Favors is a project, and I wouldn’t even look for Casspi-like contributions in his rookie season (I’d still pick him here, though). Cousins is closer to NBA ready in body but probably not in mind.
5-6: Johnson and Aminu are bonafide prospects, but they are less thrilling to us because they are wing players.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Agreed on the talent breakdown
Right now I’m most concerned with the worst case scenario (the sixth pick) and based on the Petrie interview (taking talent over need with a high pick and young team), I don’t think we have to be concerned with Aldrich, Davis, or Whiteside being drafted.
Like the Cousins or Favors thread, we need a Aminu and Johnson thread, just in case..

I have a serious man crush on Demarcus Cousins. His upside is Shaq. His downside is Derrick Coleman. Either way it’ll be entertaining

I’d take 3rd. I would love to have Turner but Wall? Eh.

I''m guessing Wall and Turner.....
and I’d be happy w/ either, but I like Turner’s defense and size a bit more. I’d also rather go after a ‘big’ in free agency, and get a guy that has proven numbers/skills….
Wasn't sure if he might have meant Wall and Favors
I am interested in Wall, Favors, or Cousins. No matter how you slice it, we will probably get a crack at least one of them.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
If Cousins can keep his head straight
it would be 1,2,3, are surefire imo. That is a big “if” though. Honestly if Cousins were considered a “great kid” he would be a possible #1 especially if the team picking first has a stud pg or sg.

Statistically we got the higher percentage last year.
The worst team has 250 of the 1,000 possible number combinations which means they have a 25% percent chance of a combination being one of theres, however they have a 75% chance of have one of the 750 combinations not theirs to come up……I’d be NJ isn’t going to get the number one pick.
I think the fall back of spots needs to be less than 3 spots, you shouldn’t be able to fall out of the top 3 if you were the worst team in the NBA last year IMHO
Exactly.
I voted to take #3, not because I’m paranoid but because it’s most likely that we get a worse pick than that.
Look at the widget on the front page! We have less than a one in three chance at getting a better pick than #3. We have a more than 50-50 chance of getting a worse pick than #3. The absolutely non-paranoid reasonable thing to do in this situation would be to take #3.
You're right!
I was thinking that the Kings had better than 50% chance of getting 1, 2, or 3. But, that is not the case. I want to rescind my vote and take the guaranteed 3 spot.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
Or looking at it another way.
If you were offered a 0% chance of picks one and two in a two player draft . . .
Because I think the difference between 1/2 and 3/4 is at least as big as the diffrence between 3/4 and 5/6. So what I am doing is taking a chance on dropping for the chance of moving up.
But I still voted to let the balls roll since I can’t imagine GP not coming up with something good regardless.

I would also love to see the lottery be abolished – I see why they instituted it at the time but I don’t see the point any more – just have stern turn his lottery-fixing resources into unilateral tanking investigation and punishment
the nets were the worst team in the league and they came by it honestly – just like the kings last year – they should have the first pick
by lchristmas on Apr 17, 2010 12:46 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
I strongly disagree - Thank goodness for the lottery
John Wall – or let’s say LeBron or Shaquille O’Neal – are the consensus number one pick. How bad would the tanking be? There isn’t much tanking now – which is difficult to prove – because of the lottery. Even with the lottery in place tanking is a concern just to increase the chance of a better pick (ping pong balls).
If a team is so bad that they are in the bottom half of the lottery then maybe you shouldn’t just “give” that team the #1 pick just to see that talent go to waste (see the Clippers).. The better teams are finding ways to improve or stay comptetive. Don’t make the draft the only way. The lottery in it’s current form is a wonderful thing.

I defy you to find anyone that has supported Petrie to the lengths that I have. Go find one negative comment from me in any of the past draft threads, wheither we were drafting Hawes (whom few wanted), Thompson (who few knew of), Evans (Rubuioooo!!!), Brockman, Singletary, Patrick Ewing, Jr….I have supported Petrie every step of the way.
I can probably be easily knocked for just about anything around here, but not lack of support for Petrie.

take 3rd pick
1) i dont want john wall or evan turner
- taking wall means that you are giving up on tyreke as a point guard, which i think is flat out ridiculous after only 1 season
- watching turner in the big 10 championship and tournament, he drives a lot and doesnt have a consistent jumper, sounds too much like evans
2) with the 3rd pick, we fill our void without having to take someone as a reach
Can someone check this kids ID???Hes only 20 years old??
....yes u say that every game peaches, i think we got it by now
Or it means that you took the best overall pick and now
have the flexability to keep Wall or not. I guarantee you that if you have Wall, you have options. And even if you keep Wall, you have an amazing pair of guards in your backcourt. I don’t buy the whole, if we move Reke to 2 he loses his mismatch, because all season long teams have been guarding him with the two anyway. Put Wall and Evans in your backcourt and you will have plenty of mismtaches.

I'll take my chances in the lottery
Evan Turner averaged 20 points 9 rebounds and 6 assists, which is the most PT/REB/ASST total in college basketball since Larry Bird in 1978-79.
Superstar potential? Check.
Turner also broke his back and returned 6 games later.
Toughness? Check.
At 6’7", Turner is multi-dimensional. He is an amazing ball handler. He will be able to play SF, SG and PG in the NBA. His best position is likely combo SG. We need a SG.
Fills a need? Check.
Finding a backcourt running mate for Tyreke for next decade has to be a priority. The sooner we find one, the sooner they learn to play and win together.
Connect the dots, Kings fans. I know its early, and I reserve the right to change my mind, but I think Turner is our guy.

I would still take a sure 3rd
but I am not a guy who thinks Evans & Turner would not be great. Because him & Evans are similar I think he might be better at small forward for us. I honestly don’t know why all I know is Chauncy Billups & Carmelo works, Nelson & Hedo worked(Hedo being a point forward), Westbrook & Durant works, Rondo & Pierce worked.
