I’d have to say our rookies (played) extremely well, led by Tyreke, of course… He’s just a young kid. The expectations of him are too high, but if he learns to become a more prominent point guard and things like that, he’ll be fine. He has to work on his defense, too.

Some what surprising,
Coachie mentioning the team needing
We could use a little bit more shooting and definitely polish up our defense – we have to do that.
but no mention of post defender or rebounder

Listen up Spencer.
If they don’t practice during the summer and come back the same way they are now, then they don’t care about playing.

Did Spencer not practice during the summer?

I think I am the most intrigued by Carril working with JT this summer
Hope Coachie can work his magic.
Umm... I thought we were officially referring to Voison as the Chick Replacing Amick at the Paper? or CRAP, for short.
He definitely should be able to get to JT about slowing down in the game, and focusing on decision making.
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
I find it interesting when he addressed Evans' defense.
I thought Evans’ defense was at least above average on a consistent basis. The main problem he had is dealing with off screens. Evans has difficulty getting by screens at times. Evans is IMO a very good one on one defender already. I hope Coachie meant by improving his defense means “hoping to get his defense to elite by next season”. ;)
Rebuilding the Kings.
I guess I don't agree with you
Two things about Tyreke’s defense have really bothered me:
1) off the ball he is totally passive (this is more or less the case on offense as well) and, from what I can tell, frequently leaves enough space between he and his man that when they catch the ball he’s in a bad position to challenge them.
2) he often plays for the steal- not in an AI roaming the passing lanes way but by poking at the ball as people drive on him. If he doesn’t get it he’s then stuck trying to catch up to them from behind, which more or less doesn’t work.
I agree that he has the capability to an elite defender at the guard positions, but tend to disagree with the prevailing wisdom that he’s already a very good one. He’s shown it in spots (Gilbert being the most obvious victim) but great defense isn’t made out of highlights- it’s made of consistent and dutiful effort.
I agree with the off the ball aspect. Evans is passive at times.
That’s a good point. But the 2nd point, I disagree. He doesn’t play for steals as much as you say. When the opposing opponent isolates Evans, most of the time Evans play pretty damn good defense. Sticks with his man and challenges the shot as much as he can. I rarely see him getting totally blown by. Well, he does play for steals but to the extent that he’s pretty sure he can steal the ball.
Rebuilding the Kings.
I see his 2nd point happening all the time. So i'd have to agree with LP
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
Same here
I saw that way too often, when he got it it looked like a good play. However, more times then not he missed and left his frontline exposed.
9/10 times he missed, and then stood watching the play develop
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
Agree l_p
Off the ball he seems to get bored and creeps closer to the action and then, like you said, he’s to far off his man . I think he does a decent job of fighting thru screens , mostly because he has the muscle to do it. His on the ball defense is solid, but sometimes energy drops to 80% ,I’m hoping that gets better with conditioning to play 38 minutes.
There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.
With LP as well
Reke has the potential of being a very good defender, and he has shown this during stretches. But he doesn’t play consistent D; he’s actually a very lazy defender ( I say this after watching him play for more than 15 live games).
He’s going to be a great defender, he just needs to star caring more about that end of the court.
"Children want what they want when they want it." ... Andy Sims
I don't characterize Evans as a lazy defensive player. Sure, he gets passive at times at this end.
But only to conserve most of his energy. You have to remember this guy does most of our scoring and usually defends the other teams better players.
Rebuilding the Kings.
There's a good chance I'm being very hard on the guy
Because I expect so much, but it’s been downright frustrating watching him play D sometimes
"Children want what they want when they want it." ... Andy Sims
I agree with both here
I kind of understand the saving energy point, cause Tyreke was asked to be our offense this year and I doubt he was in condition to do that and give his full effort on defense every possession.
I dont think you are being too hard
He does get passive or bored on defense a lot, but I think a lot has to do with him being a rookie. I don’t think the coaching staff was exceptionally hard on him this year. Heading into his second year, with his ability to be a great player established, now they can concentrate on his weaker areas of defense, jump shots, and ball movement.
There will never be another Kareem.

You're observations and interpretation appears to be on-point
Looking up his defensive stats on mySynergySports, he ranks as one of the better isolation defenders (#23 against iso). His obvious weak area is in defending off the ball. But overall he grades out as a solid defender. I think you’re onto what Carril was getting at. Is above average good enough for someone with Tyreke’s skill and physical tools? He does have a ways to go before he can be considered an elite defender but it says a lot that the goal is realistic and “in sight”.
by Kevin Conroy on Apr 23, 2010 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Coachie is trying to light a fire in Evans. Words of motivation is probably Coachie's intent.
That’s how I interpret it. If it goes well, Evans will use this as motivation and light a fire in himself to strive to be an outstanding defender in the L in next several years. I believe Evans will get to the level of being elite defensively. I mean, look at his physical characteristics and his approach on defense. His well beyond for a 20 year old player. A rookie. Like others said, I think after a good well spent offseason well do wonders for Evans.
Rebuilding the Kings.
Tyreke has all of the tools to be a complete player
He has much to improve in his game, It is my opinion that Coachie is trying to bring focus as to where to concentrate first.

For him to become a better defender
the front office is going to need to help him by getting other players than can carry the offensive load. He can’t go full mode at both ends of the court for a whole season.
"Children want what they want when they want it." ... Andy Sims
Spencer should be pay attention to this
"I think what they ought to do is go back to their school or find places to workout with guys who have good games and where they actually get something done. The main thing is, stay away from these guys who are always patting them on the back. Praise is the cheapest form of reward."
.
No offense to Jon Brockman, Nick Collison, or Robert Swift, but I think Hawes needs to cut his time short in Washington and work out somewhere else with other guys more athletic and stronger than the aforementioned this time; this way he can push his game harder because it pretty much stayed the same playing with these guys.

I have enjoyed watching him this playoff series. Here is my queston: where do you all project Brockman:
1 – a smaller but more athletic Nick Collison
2 – a Chuck Hayes type player

A less stout Reggie Evans maybe. It took awhile for Reggie Evans to find his way into the NBA. Maybe that’s true of Nessie as well.

I like the focus he puts on defense
And I loved this part:
it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen two guys guard each other one-on-one, and play hard to the point where they’re really mad at each other and steam is coming out of their head. That’s the only way they’re going to get better defensively and offensively. It’s one of the drills where, if you’re on offense, you have to work on scoring, and when you’re on defense, you have to learn to stop guys. (They seem to have), what I call, a nonaggression pact, they sign all the time. This guy scores and he pats you on the back and rear end — you don’t want to do that
That’s right, Coach. Old school.

I thought so too lttg. Reke???
I like Coachies perspective on Casspi.
It was interesting/concerning that Carrill spoke of Tyreke’s D and his point guard skills. I’m assuming he’s referring to delivering the ball when needed, quicker, running the show in general. My concern is that Reke’s lack of D and PG skills my be a sign of a large ego concerned too much with his own and not on team improvement. Am I crazy?
I do think Reke will work on all this, but the transition from badass of the world in college etc., to team member in the Pros is the biggest obstacle Evans will face (IMO).
I don't think it was from an ego
It was because he was told to look for his own shot first.

Gotta disagree
I think the biggest obstacle that Evans faces is when to make plays for others and himself. The other challenge is to be able to counter what the defense is doing, and that isn’t there yet. Tyreke has time. Let this one play out.

Bingo
Tyreke was given the reigns to a leaderless weakly offensive squad (see 2008-09). He is young and learning and not yet ready to put an NBA team on his back. But he did a helluva job and with unprecedented consistency for a young rookie.
As the Kings add talent and as Tyreke matures and gains NBA experience his game will expand To quote another source: did you believe this kid is 20 years old? I don’t see ego here at all. The kid seems selfless and basically a good soldier. He is given direction by his Coach and his Blueprint and he is trying his best to be up to the task. He knows his role, his role is to be all everything. That is a kinda tough to do, but he seems intent on getting there.
Let this one play out.

If Tyreke didn’t turn out, it would be because of the concerns you mentioned. I just think there is a very small chance he turns into Steve Francis rather than an all star caliber player.

Steve Francis WAS an All-Star caliber
What he was not was a real franchise player.

should we do it?

great question
Depends on the draft position. 1-4 probably not, 5,6 yes with the option to decline based on who is available and how the workouts go. If the guy you want drops to your position then you pass even if it is 5,6.

I read that Miami may need to get rid of Beasely to a team with cap room before the draft so that they have room to resign Wade and still sign a max player. So I thought if we did them a favor they should give us a draft pick…but Beasely has shwon no interest in Defense, so I don’t know if it woukd be good to do or not
There are some guys smarter than me, some guys better looking, I take comfort in the fact that there is no guy that is both.
as a second year player compare him to his contempeoraries
Rose, Mayo, Westbrook, Love, Galinari, Gordon, Joe Alexander, DJ Augustin, Brook and Robin Lopez, Bayless, A Randolph and of course JT.
Throw in his playing time and opportunity and that he is counted on little though they are a playoff team and yes, his acquistion on further review would be circumspect. :He is approaching some semblence of Sheldon Williams, Marvin Williams, Tyrus Thomas levels. Remember, he is tthe #2 (almost #1) pick of that draft class. And yes, most importantly for the Kings – he does not defend and plays like a SF who can rebound and not shoot particularly well.
I originally thought he might be a worthwhile chance but given his salary ($4.6M) I would say no unless the Heat accepted money back which defeats the purpose of trading him.
