PrintWe reported early this morning that Tyreke Evans will be named the NBA's 2009-10 Rookie of the Year later this week. Sactown Royalty has learned that the official announcement will be made at a press conference scheduled for 12 PM on Thursday at the Kings' practice facility in Natomas.
The Kings have not announced Evans's victory or alerted media of the press conference. Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee reported a little while ago the Kings don't know if Evans has won and are not yet planning a press conference. That runs counter to what sources have told Sactown Royalty.

standards.
the knock against blogs and other forms of new media is they don’t have the same standards as traditional media. for every story a guy gets right – there are 10 stories online that are flat out wrong.
i wouldn’t hold it against the bee for having a standard in place on what/what/when their sources have to be. quite frankly, although i assumed reke was going to win the award, i didn’t believe he won it until the Bee confirmed it because I trust their standards for reporting more than TZ’s. No offense to him but he’s not going to get sued etc if he puts out the wrong info on something like this. Jason Jones puts out something like this and it’s wrong, he faces a reprimand and potential suspension/termination – TZ gets it wrong and he just issues some sort of hilarious apology and moves on to the next article.

That might be true for the blogosphere in general, but if TZ busted this out erroneously – I think there would be repercussions (certainly a loss of trust from his readership). If this was Joe Blow’s NBA column that gets 10 eyeballs a day, then you get the “LOLZ PSYCH” thing…but sites like StR are still held to a certain standard IMO.
The fact is, the “traditional” media either got completely scooped here, or their rules (justifiably or not) impeded them reporting the information first. It’s certainly a conundrum, but I don’t feel bad for them just as I don’t feel bad for any business model that’s not fully prepared to evolve with the times.

And to add to that, if Jones had gotten a source to confirm this information on the record, he would have jumped at the opportunity to break the story.
I would also suggest you consider the rumors that are reported during trade season. Sam Amick, great as he is, has reported rumors of trades that never came to be. It certainly didn’t hurt his credibility or result in sanctions, he’s reporting what his sources have told him. No different than TZ.

Regardless of the reporter, they go based on sources. If the source is wrong, the writer is not sued or reprimanded.
