2010 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #1

Welcome to the 2010 Sactown Royalty Community Draft Board. This is the readership's opportunity to create a democratic draft board which represents the order in which we as a collective would like the Kings' draft board to look like. It does not represent the desires of individual writers or fans (trust me ...), but some semblance of the community's collective thinking.

When a choice comes up, pick who you'd want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining. Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is draft board, a list with the order of prospects you'd like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we'd take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Geoff Petrie or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick's choices.

This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will be begin shortly thereafter. We will go 25 picks deep.

Poll
For the No. 1 pick, I would select ...
John Wall, PG, Kentucky
759 votes
Evan Turner, SG, Ohio State
142 votes
Derrick Favors, PF/C, Georgia Tech
37 votes
DeMarcus Cousins, PF/C, Kentucky
43 votes
Wesley Johnson, SF, Syracuse

I picked Favors.

Wall is the sexy selection, but Favors could end up being the better player. Besides it’s who I felt like taking.

IMO

This could actually happen depending on who ends up with the #1 pick. A team absolutely lacking a true 7 footer but who has a legitimate point would be hard pressed to pick Wall unless the idea was to draft him with an eye towards trading him, and considering Cousins’ potential (somewhere between Shaq and Dwight Howard, strictly in terms of potential,) the idea is not all that ridiculous….

Wall

Maybe he’s not the best fit, but hey, the kid seems to be something unique at this stage, let alone what he could become.
All said, if the Kings end up with one of the top 4 (Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins) I don’t care much who of the 4 will be, GP will pick the best available, I’m pretty sure.

This is a good point

Any of us can argue whomever we want, and Petrie will take whomever he wants for whatever reasons he chooses. He’ll do the workouts, get all the input from the Kings management staff, and make the decision come draft day.

Voted for...

I stared at those radial buttons far longer than a vote for a fan draft board really necessitates. I stared and I pondered.

On one hand you have John Wall. He’s a ridiculous athlete, and has tons of potential. But I still can’t shake that nagging feeling that something isn’t right. Perhaps it’s just me being opposed to people being anointed the number 1 pick. Who knows? But it’s John Freaking Wall.

But then you’ve got Evan Turner. Probably a lower ceiling, but a very good all-around player. He is perceived as potentially being a better fit with Tyreke. He seems to have a good attitude. But is it settling? Is it enough to pass on Wall.

Ultimately, I voted for Turner. But that vote will change every 5 minutes. The reason I ended up voting for Turner is because it seems like something Petrie might do. In this draft, I’ll maintain my faith in Petrie’s judgment.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on May 17, 2010 6:38 AM PDT reply actions

Probably can't go wrong with Turner...

but I am left with this “nagging feeling” that the reason you ended up voting for Turner was because it seemed like something Petrie would do. Is Turner your first choice to be a King?

Pookey, your the historian,

what is a reasonable benefit for trading down? I know teams have traded picks in the past, but what is the norm as far as what you can expect for trading down and what is the most any team has gotten for trading down 2 or 3 slots?

I'm not Pookey (thankfully) but here are a few things

- Trade down with a team that really wants the #1 pick and have them take back a bad contract, like Noc
- Trade down with a team that really wants the #1 pick and get another good player on top of that
- Swap picks straight up so Petrie gets the player he wants at a cheaper price

Yes, I understand the benefits, but

my question was what type of bad contracts have teams actually been willing to take back in the past.

What other good players have teams actually given up in the past

It’s easy to say that teams might be willing or desparate enough to move up and give you all thos things but have they actually ever done it.

by HighTops on May 17, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, I think most teams would be happy with Wall or Cousins

so i’m not sure you could get anything out of trading down from 1 to 2. And, if you want Cousins and were willing to trade down to 3, you’d be taking a gamble by taking Wall that the 2nd place team wouldn’t take Cousins and leave you stuck with no team to trade down to.

You’d really have to not care which of the two you got with the top pick, and then see how it played out. The only real reason I can see for trading down is if you really didn’t want the BPA.

there’s a better chance that the Kings get a top 2 pick and select Cousins and then trade up from 33 or buy a late lottery pick.

1 example of trading down

Trading the first overall picks
1980 draft: 1980 Draft – Celtics traded their 1st overall for Robert Parrish and the Warriors’ 3rd pick in exchange for Joe Barry Carroll and Ricky Brown. Boston eventually chose Kevin McHale with that 3rd pick.
While JBC had limited success, the right to draft him (#1 overall) was definitely worth trading for the rights to Parrish, and the #3 pick (McChale).

by vfettke on May 17, 2010 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think they're really all that similar

Wall is a freaky athlete and a point guard – he has more of a pass-first mentality that Evans. Evans is an incredibly gifted scorer who creates looks for others sheerly by being an incredible scorer.

Both Evans and Beno are score-first, which is not an issue. Lots of teams win with a score-first point – see Orlando. I don’t think the kings actually have a pass-first guy on the roster. But Wall likes to set his teammates up as much as he likes to score on his own.

The reality is that we are just a likely to move to 4-5 as we are to be in the 1-3 range. I could see Petrie falling in love with a smooth-shooting, pass-first big in Greg Monroe and taking him with the 4th, 5th or 6th pick. I’m not saying I want this – I could just see it happening.

by KeonClark on May 17, 2010 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

The scenario scares me a little

but if last year’s draft is any indication Petrie won’t be going for that type of guy.

I think Wall and Evans could work really well together, especially if Evans learns to make some of those cool backdoor cuts off the ball like Kevin used to

I am looking forward to seeing more actual plays run this year though. There’s no reason this offense should become stagnant at times with Reke trying to do everything. There’s also no reason he should have to do everything sometimes because no one else can get it done.

Yes, he would be a considerable improvement in the offense. We might have a few more turnovers, but a lot less idiotic 24-second violations.

I really like Turner, but Wall has also the potential to be a monster defender. And a good team needs another good defender. Omri can’t do it all by himself.

Turner

he is more polished that Wall, fills a need, and could find himself in a good situation in Sac and have a better overall career than Wall.

I am not sure Wall is as good as Derrick Rose. He is not any faster, not any stronger, and not as good a shooter. He can make plays for other people, but so could Sergio Rodriguez.

Whoa, sorry, went a little overboard there with the Sergio comparison!

Still, I like Turner better now and I think he will have at least as successful a career as Wall.

I am going against the grain and voting for Turner.

Because I honestly think he’s the BPA. Yes, Wall is insanely athletic and quick, but when I look at him, I see a very similar player to Derrick Rose and Steve Francis. Now I’m not saying Wall couldn’t be better, and that pairing him up with Tyreke wouldn’t be amazing (I’m not going to listen to any fit arguments, because Tyreke and Kevin were supposed to be the ultimate fit and look how that worked out), but I think Turner provides more versatility and skill. He’s older, true, but he’s shown an ability to simply take over games and carry his team. Neither Wall nor Turner can really shoot all that well, although Turner has a pretty good midrange jumper, and his 3 has been improving (he also shoots less 3s than Wall did, and connects at a better percentage, so he understands his strengths). He’s very versatile and could play 3 positions (5 against the Dubs). I see him as a mix between Brandon Roy and Scottie Pippen.

Ultimately its Geoff’s decision if we land #1, and I might end up being in the wrong for liking Turner over Wall, but I will be happy with either player on our team (just moreso for Turner).

A lot of people might disagree with me but if I was starting a franchise I would take Rose over Roy.

by Doors Open on May 17, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Whoever claimed Kevin and Tyreke to be the perfect fit?

Certainly not me. Kevin is a pure ‘2’. Tyreke is a combo guard. The ideal fit next to Tyreke is another combo guard. Said that before and after the trade. I also felt when Geoff said it as an ideal pairing it was a smoke screen that precipitated the trade and attempt to boost to Kevin’s value.

Regarding athleticism, Rose, Francis, and Wall are similar. But definite distinctions. Francis had a lot of “junk” and playground in his game. And had a horrible propensity to force shots. Wall is much more disciplined with his moves. That will translate well in NBA.

Wall looks more unselfish with the ball than Rose, and better at creating for teammates. Rose seems better at bullying his way in the paint.

I love Evan Turner’s game too. But Wall is the pick.

Think about it this way: Wall is a better prospect than Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Tyreke. You don’t pass that up.

by bench_blob on May 17, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

That's why Beno/Reke works so well

they’re both combo guards. Beno may be a little small for an ideal combo guard but he has a great mix of scoring and passing.

One way of looking at it

I wonder how these two would have been in each other’s shoes. That is, had Turner been at Kentucky, he likely would have been the 2, while Bledsoe ran the point. Wall, on the other hand, would have been running the Buckeyes. My bet is that Wall’s scoring may have gone up a little, while Turner’s scoring, assists, and turnovers would have gone down.

I sure hope that we are in a position where we have to make this decision.

I see it as Turner handling less at Kentucky, so his handling numbers go down. Funny thing about Wall – everyone calls him ball dominant, but when I watched Kentcuky he shared with Bledsoe much in the same way the Evans shared with Udrih. Wall ran the majority of the breaks, but in the halfcourt Wall and Bledsoe shared the load.

Exactly

and honestly, I still believe that if Kevin and Tyreke had been able to play together all year they would have played really well together. Westphal would’ve had a better opportunity to develop a better offensive scheme involving both of them. As it turned out Kevin missed most of the season so he wasn’t really figured into the lineup well. When he came back he was rusty and looked completely out of place since everything revolved around Evans as it should have. It was kind of doomed the minute Kevin got hurt

He is also older. I like Turner at 2 but watching them play throughout the year I believe Wall is the better talent, better fit and better propect. Wall is a floor general and is a great defender. I like how Turner is a triple double threat night in and night out and I think his game is solid but from what I’ve seen he shoots line drive shots over smaller defenders and doesn’t get tremendous elevation while shooting his midrange jumper. In the NBA it will be much more difficult for him to create the way he did in college. Wall on the other hand should get better in the NBA style of gameplay because it opens up and spreads out, with his elite speed and athleticism.

by Doors Open on May 17, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

heres an argument on wall from someone that watches

His leaping ability is special, but its his speed and size that makes him special. Look at all the quick guards in the nba that are making huge impacts.

Look at Russell westbrook. He was a lot more raw comming into the league than Wall is. Wall has played PG in college, has better vision now than westbrook did his rookie year, and is every bit as big and athletic.

When it comes to potential, I don’t see how anyone can say Wall doesn’t have more. Turner is the best college basketball player today, but doesn’t mean he is the best NBA prospect. Turner’s lack of elite athletisim give him a ceiling, one that Wall doesn’t have.

When it comes to potential...

Age is a factor:

  • Wall is 19 years old, born September 6, 1990
  • Turner is 21 years old, born October 27, 1988
  • Cousins is 19 years old, born August 13, 1990
  • Favors is 18 years old, born July 15, 1991

When comparing Turner and Wall as far as potential, people need to keep in mind that Turner has had two additional years to hone his skills in college over both Wall and Cousins and is three years older than Favors.

As you say…

When it comes to potential, I don’t see how anyone can say Wall doesn’t have more. Turner is the best college basketball player today, but doesn’t mean he is the best NBA prospect.

Thought provoking

so here’s my thoughts – Tyreke has been groomed since a young child to be “the Man”. His support group had every intention of getting their young protege into the NBA to try and dominate the L. He was taught to be an alpha dog.
John Wall has a very similar pedigree. Since his early HS years, he was being groomed to be an alpha dog in the NBA. As every dog owner knows, there can only be one alpha, and the fact that these two play in the back court makes it that much more difficult for them to co-exist, in my opinion. It worked for Shaq and Kobe because they played inside-out, not necessarily in the same space but on complementary areas of the floor, both defensively and offensively. There’s no arguing that JW is the BPA, but in terms of fit, could you see the two of them both trying to be “the Man” for the Kings succesfully? I’d love to see it come to fruition, and voted Wall, but think the potential for disaster is great….

You can take the best talent available, but sometimes the best talent available (or considered to be at the time) is not always the best talent for the team long term.

I'm pretty sure being the Atlanta Hawks one-series-and-out ain't a great long-term plan, either.

Wall has the highest ceiling in the shortest time, and he plays defense. If you can’t win with Evans & a talent like Wall, maybe you should just sell the team to interests in Kansas City.

Why does Lebron have so much difficulty winning a ring with all that talent around him? Cuz everyone on that team defers to him. Its not their fault he makes horrible decisions with the ball when he’s not scoring, but they also recognize he’s the alpha….Oh, and didn’t Shaq and Kobe win like 3 rings? How do you figure that didn’t work? That’s the only dual alpha dog pairing that ever really worked (and its understood Shaq is no longer an alpha, but he certainly was then…)

Yeah, me too

Honestly, I think ‘Reke feels good about the 20-5-5 and especially about the ROY, but the bigger prize is the max money and the championships. I think he’s pretty much already sealed his fate in regards to the future money (pending major injuries, off-court problems, yadda yadda yadda), and I think he’d love to share the spotlight if it meant he was on a more competitive team. The reality is, John Wall on this team would raise the profile of the entire team, ‘Reke included. Even if Tyreke’s production ended up dropping off just a bit with Wall next to him, I think the increased profile and competitiveness would be a fair tradeoff in the eyes of ’Reke and his people (for one thing, I think it would help his All-Star chances).

That's a good point

You could say just about every championship team has two “alpha” dogs, but they might be at differing levels of talent. Guys like Charles Oakley, Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimber/Rick Mahorn could all be considered “alpha”.

If you are talking about two top-flight players in the league, most championship teams of the last 30 years can fit that criteria as well.

by Mityt on May 17, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

To counter

I mentioned the Shaq Kobe pairing as being the only succseful one. Shaq / Wade – Wade was a sophomore and deferred to Shaq all season, which he would never do at this point. C’s 3, I’ll give you Garnett and Pierce, Allen stopped being an Alpha long ago, but true enough the other 2 work well together. Duncan was a rookie to Robinson’s vet leadership and didn’t become the alpha until the following couple of years. Drexler was never an alpha that I remember, always a complimentary player, and the Olympics don’t count as we’re talking about NBA franchises. Tyreke and Wall are too close in age and in desire to be “the Man” unless one of them decides to take more of a back seat role…
And Stockton Malone is also another good one, so I guess I’ll give it a rest now….

Here's a question

By some magic, every team in the league has an equal chance of acquiring the #1 pick. What team wouldn’t 1) draft him and keep him or 2) use him as a chip to trade down? Or, I suppose another way of looking at would be who would draft someone other than him at number one, assuming they meant to keep the pick?

I'm not going to lie, I haven't watched much of either

My reasoning is based on this: if I were GM of the Kings and had the number 1 pick I’d make it pretty clear that I’m taking Wall, but will listen to offers. I wouldn’t make it seem like I’m actively shopping him. The less desperate you seem to trade him the more desperate offers teams will give you. Then I’d see what teams below me are willing to offer. For example, if the Dubs landed the 3, would they be willing to trade it and Curry? Would the Nyets be willing to part with Lopez? Would Minny trade Kevin Love? If we could get one of those guys for the #1 plus a top 4 pick, then I’d take Wall. However, if none of those guys bite I’m not sure any other lottery teams have much I’d covet and I might end up taking Turner because he’d probably be the better fit and is just as talented

because I do feel Turner is the better fit, but then again, what if Wall becomes a better player than Tyreke and Evan Turner? Not picking him would end up being a mistake. It might be crazy, but I’d almost rather land the 2nd pick and just pick Turner, its the only logical choice. In fact, I’d be estatic to land Turner at 2.

LeBron James is a Free Agent

Most of the NBA world is drooling (or dreading) the thought of LeBron being paired-up on some team with the likes of Dwayne Wade or Chris Bosh. No one is fretting whether those guys could share the ball and make it work. If you’re the coach of a team that has two of those guys, you fall asleep every night with a smile on your face. If you’re the coach of a team that has to play against those guys, you randomly throw things against the wall throughout your day out of overwhelming frustration and hopelessness.

If you have the #1 pick, you take John Wall. I’m not saying ’Reke and Wall will be LeBron and Wade, but they could be. Sweet holy God, they could be.

Okay, the "search" is working now

The Two Wangs Theory:

Having a shot at Wall with one of the top picks even though we already have Tyreke on our team is like having a shot at acquiring a second wang. Now, you may think to yourself "I’m very excited about my current wang, it’s served me well, and frankly I’m not sure what I would do with a second one," which may lead you to pass on this fantastic opportunity and take a safer prize instead.

But what if you could master that second wang, Pookey? Just imagine the glorious possibilities for a moment (okay, stop imagining them now, it’s getting creepy). It would be like having a Ferrari and a fighter jet. "Which one do I take to work today?" It doesn’t even matter, because you’re in for an awesome ride either way.

In conclusion, we should draft Johnson… wait, I’ve confused myself…

Wall already has more star power than any draft pick since Lebron

Otherwise, I’d have taken Turner. Wall and Evans are very similar in that they go to the rim and have rough outside shots. Turner is much more complete and a near perfect fit alongside Evans at the two.

Honestly, if I were Petrie and I got the first pick, I’d trade it (Wall) for Stephen Curry if The Warriors would do it. Curry and Evans would be the most insanely lethal back court in the league, with perfectly complimentary skills… and The Warriors would get a superstar.

Not a bad idea, IF the Warriors would do it.

However, they may get their superstar with Curry.

I voted for Cousins and here's why:

All the teams left in the playoffs have an All- Star/H.O.F big man. The Suns have Amar’e. The Celtics have KG. The Magic have Howard. And the @#%*!% have Pau. The teams that have won it all this past decade have had a Dynamic Guard-All-Star/H.O.F. big. Duncan and Manu. Shaq and Wade.Shaq and @#$%&. Even Billups/Hamilton-Sheed. I know Pierce is a small forward but he is a dynamic scorer paired with KG.

We have the dynamic guard. Now we need the All-Star/H.O.F. big. Cousins is the big in this draft with that kind of potential.

by StevenG on May 17, 2010 10:18 AM PDT reply actions   4 recs

Ok, if you really think that Cousins has the talent and all that then just say you think he’s the BPA. Citing your desire for him to be good and valuable like other bigmen aint a good reason, IMO.

LIke last year

I feel for Petrie.

Last year approaching the lottery I had high hopes for our pick, but with the 08-09 Kings need for a quality PG, there weren’t any PG’s available that were quite worth the #1 slot, especially with the “sure thing” in Blake Griffin. I felt relief at getting #4, although at the time I hoped Rubio would be our pick.

I am quite happy with Evans.

This year Wall is like Griffin: the BPA. I would take him if we get the #1 pick, just as I would have taken Griffin last year.

This year our need is at the 4 or 5. A pick of Favors or Cousins at #1 would come with heavy criticism from the media and world of sports. While I think we would be great with Wall, a better fit would be Cousins or Favors, two great players as well.

Perhaps the #2 pick would suit us better this year…

by DirtyDribblers on May 17, 2010 11:01 AM PDT reply actions

After some consideration

I still believe that the higher the pick, the better the pick is. So I’d still like the #1.

by DustyG on May 17, 2010 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

jeez, I remember last year we felt like our front court was relatively set

and that’s why we talked about hoping we DIDN’T get the number one pick because we didn’t need Blake Griff as much as a PG.

That was before we realized our front court sucked.

I wonder if the gap between Turner and the big guys will be smaller

if we have a poll where we have to pick #2 and Wall is already gone.

Will all the Wall voters pass Turner and draft for neeed, or do they believe Turner and Tyreke will be able to coexist?

by RikSmits on May 17, 2010 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

I think Turner and Tyreke can definitely co-exist

Especially if Turner’s used as kind of a point-forward type like Hedo was used in Orlando. The offense can run through both of them quite well. However, I think a lot of it will depend on coaching

I think so too

Dunking Dutchman

by RikSmits on May 17, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I really want Tyreke to learn to move off the ball

I think all it would take is for Westphal to run more plays like that, where Tyreke moves off the ball and does some backdoor cuts like Kevin used to do. Turner’s got excellent court vision. If Tyreke could get open under the rim and Turner can get him the ball, that’s deadly.

I look forward to seeing how well Tyreke does with another star-type player, assuming we pick in the top 4. I think he had to carry the offense so much last year we didn’t really get to see how well he’d do with someone else handling the ball a lot. Although, Beno handled the ball quite a bit with Tyreke on the floor and they were a fun combo to watch.

Personally
  • #6 would sting a little bit. Not as depressing as last year’s #4 because the hopes for a top 2 pick were so high and the team was in a much worse place. I’ll be a little ticked, but I’ll have a couple drinks, recite a few “In Geoff We Trust”s, and move on.
  • #5 will be mildly disappointing. We’ll likely miss out on the “Big 4” (unless Memphis is picking before us), but there should still be a lot of talent on the board. We can still have reasonable hope that Petrie will still manage to grab a player who could end up being one of the top 2 or 3 players from the draft, a la his pick of Tyreke last year.
  • #4 will get a satisfied golf clap from me, and a fair amount of celebration. We may not get our top choice, but we should get one of the “Big 4”, and Petrie may get the one he prefers anyways.
  • #3 will be fairly exciting. We’ll probably get whichever big man impresses the most in his workouts, and we will be the envy of most of the league.
  • #2 Now you’re talkin’. The booze shall floweth.
  • #1 Set aside some bail money, hunny. It’s gonna be a wild night.

to see a vote if the Kings get pick 3 or 4 between Favors and Cousins, and a second vote to see who people would pick if the Kings get 5 or 6. I’d be ecstatic if the Kings get picks one or two, happy if they get 3 or 4 (Favors or Cousins) and then…? Johnson I guess? …no Idea.

After Cousins and Favors to me there’s another huge drop in players with potential. Tomorrow could be depressing. I knew there would be a great player at #4 last year… this year is a tossup after the first four and Cousins may even be a bust.

I still haven’t decided if I’m going there or just trying to get out early and head home. Broadcast is scheduled for 5pm and tomorrow’s game doesn’t start until 5.30, so they’ll probably begin showing the order by 5.15-5.20.

Surprise, I voted for Cousins

Why? look at the 4 teams remaining in the playoffs. Orlando and the Suns backcourt drafted by other teams and traded for. LA & Boston, each drafted one backcourt player and traded for the other.

Pho; Nash 15th pick of 96, Richardson 5th pick of 01
LA, Fisher 24th pick of 96, Kobe 13th of 96
Orl; Nelson 20th of 05, Carter 5th of 98
Boston; Rondo 21st of 06, Allen 5th of 96

It looks like you don’t need two top 5 picks in the backcourt to get to the Semi Finals, just a player that was drafted in the mid to late 90’s.

I don’t know who will be the best player from this draft 4 years from now, which is probably the soonest the Kings will be a contender. And, I can’t tell you whether Wall or Tyreke will be the best PG, or if Turner or Tyreke will be the best SG. But, I can tell you that after looking at the 16 teams that made the playoffs this year, none had 2 top 5 players in their backcourt. But, 12 of the teams had at least one top 5 player in their frontcourt.

My take on the top 4 players: Turner is a Junior, he is supposed to be more polished then the other 3 freshman. He won’t be getting more atheltic, and how much more skilled he gets is debateable. If Tyreke had 2 more years of experience, and both were in the same draft, I’d pick Evans over Turner.

Wall is an amazing athelete, but even with the talent on his team he wasn’t able to take his team to the final four. Is he going to be a better PG that Evans, more than likely. How much better is the question, and I don’t believe sharing the lead or giving it up to Wall is part of the blueprint. If Wall is taken, Evans will be traded and whether we can get another star in return is unkown. My gut tells me that we need a playmaker at PG and not a Star as long as we have Evans.

Favor is an exceptional athelete with great potential, which translates to a player that hasn’t lived up to his hype, YET. If Favor had shown anything more than defensive skills, he would be my first choice. But, he’s only shown the ability to dunk on offense, and we haven’t had a PG who sets up our bigs for a long time. The only player we have who consistently makes passes for easy dunks is Hawes. Until Favor shows a consistent jumpshot from short & mid range, the ability to put the ball on the froor and drive and finish, or some low post skills then he’s only a project. And, at this point he isn’t that much more skilled than Donte.

Cousins has the highest PER’s of any college player of the last 5 or 6 years. Not that it’s a guarantee of greatness, but it does show that he has skills. If he is going to be a Star this is the only way we can get a low post Star without totally stripping all the talent from the team. Take any top Star Big from any of the playoff teams, and try to come up with a trade where we could get that player without giving up every bit of talent on the team. What would we have to give up to get Gasul, Amare or Howard? It’s going to be easier to acquire a quality pg or sg than it will we to acquire a quality Center in free agency, so I can’t see passing on someone with the potential of Cousins.

We will need a dominant star on the frontcourt to become a playoff contender. We have a star in the backcourt already, and whether we match him with a playmaking PG or a SG who can hit the outside shot, we don’t have to match him up with a star. Cousins will be better than anyone we have in the current frontcourt. Whether Wall or Turner will be better than Evans is debateable.

This is why I'm so for trading down

I have a huge mancrush on Cousins. I think he’ll match either his best case or worst case, without much of an inbetween. So he’s either the next Shaq or the next Derrick Coleman, either way it should be fun.

But if we landed the number 1 or number 2 I really hope Petrie trades down to the 3 and lands a solid piece along with it.

Good god. HT confirmed my initial leanings toward Cousins. We’ve been desparate for a legit young big man for, what, six years now? Also, he had better numbers than Favors in fewer minutes/game.

I do not believe that Wall and Tyreke would successfully or effectively coexist in the Kings’ backcourt. Both are “ball dominant” and there just ain’t enough balls to go around. (Two wangs = four balls?)

Anyway, well said, HT.

Hmm...

If it looked like this I might do it:

NJ trades #3 (Cousins), Devin Harris
Sac Trades #1 (Wall), Nocioni, JT

Althought I’d prefer to give Spencer over JT. I like a starting backcourt of JT at the 4 and Cousins at the 5 with Landry off the bench. Although it’s possible that swap picks and send Harris straight up if they really want Wall, or believe that Wall helps them land Lebron

Does Minny even want Wall?

The picked up Sessions, drafted Flynn, and drafted Rubio. If I’m a fan I’d go crazy if they started giving up picks to get a 4th pg in 2 yrs. But even if they would be willing to trade #1 for #3, the trade would have to be after the picks are made, because there’s no guarantee that the #2 pick wouldn’t be Cousins. Remember the Thabeet pick?

Minny is also likely to take Cousins and trade Jefferson, so they might not want Wall. Too many people assume Wall is the next greatest PG, but he might not end up being any better then the top 3 or 4 from the last draft. It is always a gamble.

My hangup with Cousins....

Maybe you’re right, Top’s, and Cousin’s blossoms into a low post animal at the next level—he certainly has the raw skills and sheer power to become a star center. I have faith that Petrie will be able to decide whether Cousin’s skills exceed Favor’s over the long term should the Kings be in a position to draft either one. After all, this is the guy that saw things in K-Mart, Gerald Wallace, and Omri that other NBA GM’s didn’t, so who the hell am I to go second guessing him….

Having said that, here are my concerns regarding Cousins:

1) Outside of the layup at the buzzer to tie Vandy, Cousin’s seemed to play passively in the more important Kentucky games. Outside of foul trouble, Jarvis Varnardo outplayed Cousin’s in both of the Miss St. games, and the West Virginia game in the tourney showed that he is easily frustrated by double teams and collapsing defenses. Cousin’s will need to learn to read interior defenses if he is to become an offensive force at the next level—and he hasn’t yet shown that he can.

2) Cousins seemed to be gassed toward the end of the season and his stat’s tailed off somewhat. This likely had something to due with the caliber of competition, but I also think conditioning was a factor. The fact that he showed wear and tear in a 40 game season doesn’t translate well to an 82+ game season, unless he undergoes an intensive fitness regimen (unlikely on account of his immaturity).

3) Cousin’s is very turnover prone, particularly in pressure situations. He had a number of key losses in the West Virginia game that made a difference in the outcome. He get’s credit for making the deft pass to cutters (of which there were a ton on the KU squad), but he hasn’t yet consistently considered the safety valve pass on the perimeter during a double team. Moreover, I question the kid’s basketball IQ—he’s thus far been able to make a living out of outmuscling inferior competition, and doesn’t seemed overly intereseted in offensive positioning/motion away from the ball (outside of setting occasional picks for Wall/Bledsoe). I don’t think that this kid is anywhere near as court saavy as Turner or Wesley Johnson.

4) Obvious skills aside, let’s not confuse Cousin’s with a young Shaq, Derrick Coleman, or Dwight Howard. Cousin’s does not have that explosive first step that these big men had (has), which could ultimately cap his offensive potential. If Cousin’s came close to their explosiveness, I feel he would be the indistputable first player chosen above Wall & Co.

5) Cousin’s immaturity and tendencies to take plays off has been well chronicled; and I’m worried how this will translate when he has significantly greater down time as a professional athlete. Out of this year’s draft, I believe that Cousin’s and Whiteside would benefit the most from staying in college another one or two years.

Am I arguing that Cousin’s is a bust? No. He could realistically turn into the dominant low post presence that High Tops believes. But I believe that he is a significantly riskier pick than Wall, Turner, or Favors, which is why I have him rated at the 4 pick.

I don't know what criteria GP uses to make his decisions

from all we heard last season, he picked Evans because he dominated all the other PG’s in the workouts. That doesn’t sound like he looked into his crystal ball and decided that Evans was going to be the best player out of that draft 4 years from than.

Using that logic, the 4 top picks should dominate any other players in the draft at their position. Which lead to the obvious conclusion that no one has any idea who’s his preference or where he wants the team to go. I know that the Kings need another player other than Evans to build the team around. Another skilled player that could end up a Star, and in my opinion another player that doesn’t duplicate the things that Evans brings to the table. And, for me that’s a frontcourt player, but what do I know. My crystal ball has been on the blink since 89. Everything that happened in college, just is a point of reference, small events in a lifetime of events. I think GP is going to look at the players and the skills that they bring to the table based on their workouts, and make his decision based on athleticism and skill set. Everything else is something that can be addressed over the next 4 years.

Of course you take Wall. Not only is he the BPA he is percieved as the BPA from all other angles.

Use last year as an example. The Clips had the #1 pick. Even if you don’t need a PF the consensus was Blake Griffin at #1. He has the top value. If you want to use that value, fine, you draft him. If you don’t than you barter a deal for what you want. (1993 – Chris Webber consensus #1 tradeded for #3 Penny Hardaway and three future 1st round picks). John Wall is the #1 pick. Whether you keep him or trade down is not the question.

Otherwise – we could just have a Geoff Petrie draft board Post. It may be fun. I bet GP would get a laugh out of it.

To me he has as high an upside as anyone in the draft, and a higher probability of realizing it. I have read that he has the personal qualities (smarts, charisma, leadership) that make a very successful NBA player, altho I havent witnessed any of that (or anything to the contrary). I figure his first year impact will be similar to that of Rose, or like Westbrook’s 2nd year.

I don’t worry about fit, really — altho keeping other defenses from merely clogging the lane will be a challenge…

But if Wall and Reke even develop an average distance shooting game between them, they will be one of the better backcourts out there.

Werd.

I’m thinking Reke’s shooting will be vastly improved by November. An Evans/Wall backcourt would be unstoppable once Reke gains a shooters touch…which I think will happen sooner than later.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

Land #1..

Trade it to the Nets for Brook Lopez and CDR

You mean

you want the Nets to pick TWICE this first round? They’ll do it. Wall + Cousins/Favors would be a massive instant upgrade.

Us, we only get Lopez… which isn’t bad, but hardly #1 material.

Tanking? I don't know what you're talking about, tanking. I'm just losing more efficiently.

how about Lopez and Courtney Lee

I wont happen but since you are postulating

I think it’s pretty likely that Lopez is better right now than Cousins or Favors will be after their first to years, and perhaps their careers. He’s really effective, if you havent seen him play. Stats are good too.

I wouldnt trade Wall for him, but any of the other draftees, I would.

Evan Turner please!

I want a sure thing, and this kid is a sure thing. And I still love his size and versatility at the 2 guard, creating a devastating defensive back court that can physically dominate.

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

My board, made adjustments, moved Favors and Hassan up, Wesley down

1st rd
1. Wall
2. Favors
3. Whiteside
4. Johnson
5. Turner
6. George
2nd rd
1. Parakhouski,
2 Raduljica
3. Jordan
Why the adjustments? I think it’s important to keep in mind that 2011 class is looking “small” (think Mason Plumlee and a bunch of “Beasleys” and “Donyells”) and this year’s class is considered “big” so bigs should be given extra consideration. But why no Cousins on the list? I don’t think he’s a top 6 pick….I look at him and think Antoine Walker, Derrick Coleman, Corliss…

Too funny

I remember last year, there was speculation about Wall entering the draft, but he didn’t due to some promise to attend college.

It sucked, because we were in position for the first pick last year, and adding Wall to the draft would have opened up a Griffin/Rubio/Wall possibility. …Then a bit of speculation started happening. “What if we picked up a nice pick, then draft Wall next year?” …As crazy as that sounded back then. …And now we’re in that position.

By the way

I looooove the community draft board. One of my favorite times of the season. Looking forward when the Kings playoff game threads are my favorite posts
