true

just wanted to share that quote. But really, the kings shouldn’t be playing it safe in the draft. They should draft on potential and hopefully hit a home run. Plus, they need to put some fans in the seats. Aldrich isn’t doing that

Seriously

I hate comparisons just because of the color of the persons skin. Aldrich is a low post, shot blocking, physical, rebounding type, while Hawes is a High post, excellent passing, shooting, finesse type.

Let’s look at Johnson, Aminu, Monroe, Udoh, Aldrich, Orton, Bledsoe, Whiteside, Patterson, Babbitt, Davis, Xaveir Henry and James Anderson.

Point is, Petrie has his work cut out for him, because he needs to pull the best available player out of his hat again, just like he did last year. And if he does that we will likely have a top 2 or 3 pick on our roster again.

I see a player with...

little more untapped upside, in his prime, who is well older than anyone else, and is the same type of player as Donte Greene. We have Donte and Casspi. Do we really need a rookie (thats older than them) to take minutes from them? Is he that much of an upgrade from Donte? I would rather take a player with upside in Aminu, who could play the 3 or 4, and has upside.

by mike murray on May 18, 2010 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Just because these guys stay in school longer

does not mean that they have less “upside?” Was Tim Duncan done growing as a player? Shane Battier? Grant Hill?

We’re one of the youngest teams in the league, and he won’t move that number up. Johnson is a much more highly regarded player at this point in his development than Casspi or Greene.

Honestly, I hope that we don’t have to draft Johnson – I’m holding out hope that an available big man comes in and impressess. But if Johnson is the best guy, draft him.

The KIngs have one potential all star on their current roster, in my opinion, and his name is not Donté Greene or Omri Casspi. Pass on Johnson because he fails to impress? Fine. But do not pass on him because he is 23 or because of the current roster base.

I think that Aminu has more work in front of him

Doesn’t mean that he isn’t the right pick. But I see Johnson as the most NBA-ready player in this draft after Evan Turner. Even more ready than Wall. Johnson could be a scoring spark off the bench almost immediately for the Kings. Aminu would earn his minutes on defense, and we know how tough that is for NBA rooks. Similar to my thoughts on Cousins vs. Favors.

But I think that need is the last factor here, as we need practically everything. If we take Aminu, it will be because Petrie thinks that he is the best prospect, not because of need.

We don't need practically everything. I get the Kings won 25 games.

But they also overhauled half their roster, and the half that was new all practically played. Plus, and you have to factor this in too, the Pacers won 32 games and finished with the 10 worst record. 8 teams were all within 3 games of each other. That isn’t a heck of a lot disparity 214.

Clarifying

I’m not saying dump the roster. What I am saying is that with the #5 pick, we could improve ourselves at every position except wherever Tyreke winds up.

This team needs stars. My opinion is that we have one player with true star potential (Evans). Could another guy like Greene or Thompson or even Landry break out? Sure. But there are no players on the current roster that would preclude the Kings from drafting another player for any position.

Nope.

But the question is how a potential star would fit with players, and I see Wes Johnson being a poor fit at the moment.

Johnson is efficient offensively, but not a superb rebounder.

You don't

You take who you perceive is going to be the best player once they are developed. Today, I think that Johnson > Aminu as an NBA prospect, but by the thinnest of margins. The workouts could easily change my opinion.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on May 18, 2010 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm with Section

I think Johnson will end up being better than Aminu. I still only think it makes sense to draft Johnson if a) Petrie thinks he can get some minutes at SG or b) if there’s some idea for clearing the logjam at SF. Otherwise you’re drafting someone with no hope of cracking the rotation and developing.

by nbrans on May 18, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Drafting Johnson definitely begats another move. Heck, the same may be said of Aminu, though maybe closer to the all star break.

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on May 18, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

The idea of bringing in Aminu is that you'd play him and Omri/Donte with Aminu

That would certainly help you A) defensively B) rebounding and C) give you a lot of different things that could help you win games.

I’m sorry, but the Spencer Hawes/Jason Thompson frontcourt combo has to end. Only one can play at the court at the same time.

I don't think it's a bad idea

I just worry that:

1) You have Landry already soaking up most of the minutes at PF
2) I think Aminu’s game is more Darius Miles than Tyrus Thomas. I don’t think he has the strength to play PF. If he’s a liability defensively you’re back in SF logjam land
and
3) I don’t like Aminu as a SF because I don’t think he’s coordinated/skilled enough to play on the wings

However, if Aminu turns into the next Shawn Marion you’ll make us all look very stupid.

and we don't know

What Landry is going to do after the season. How much do we count on him being a part of the future when he is an unrestricted FA, and at his age, this is his one shot at scoring a big deal? He has to follow the money, and I don’t know how much the Kings are going to think he is worth unless he can pull off a remarkable season, especially on the boards.

Let me throw out my least favorite phrase. “Best Player Available” If Cousins is better than Johnson, don’t you take him and make the moves that you can to fill the other needs.

Trade Jefferson and Keep Love or visa versa plus how many picks does Minny have in the 1st round 3? I imagine that they are in position to make all sorts of trades and swaps this summer.

I can’t see Minny taking DeMarcus with two big plodding types in the middle with Jefferson and Love. Plus, they need outside shooting to spread the floor, and Wes Johnson fits that need.

If not, I think we take Aminu. He can’t shoot a lick, but he is great rebounder and defender, and he can probably play little 4.

The sixers could go with either Turner to put him with Iggy, or even Favors or Cousins since they don’t have any untouchable bigs. Although I think that with Dale and Speights they go Turner. Holiday, Iggy, and Turner is a pretty good perimeter.

Yeah Wall is going to the Wizards

It also could make them a much bigger FA draw than people think.

Combination of stuff

Strong Freshmen class, the looming CBA and the fear their contracts may change (for a few guys—but I doubt it was a strong factor) and there was at least 5 or 6 guys who could have come out last season and didn’t as well.

Yes,

GP is just like every other GM. He cant see into the future any more than you and I. So, the best player available down the road, isn’t a choice. All you can do as a GM is have an idea on how you want to build the team and what players look like they have the skills to work with the core players you already have.

GP hasn’t let me in on his plans, so here is what I see. PW was brought in to improve the defense and the rebounding, and only made a significant dent in the rebounding area. We already have 4 players on the frontline that can hit the 3-pt shot and the other 2 are very good at mid to long range jumpers. But, only 2 are good defensive rebounders. Cisco and Beno are good long range shooters, but with only average defensive skills. Evans is the only all around good defender and scorer.

The Kings need a defensive presence at Center and a playmaking PG who can defend so Evans can move to the 2. The guard can come from FA, so the Defensive Center is who I’d be looking for with the 5th pick. I’ve said all along that I’d take Cousins and if he’s not available I couldn’t say until after the combine and the workouts (assuming we get to see any of them).

I don’t think Cousins will stifle Evans interior play any more that Oden or Prizbilla stifle Roy’s game. Cousins has a decent short range jumper and teams will have to play him away from the rim. Plus he has good hands and will finish when Evans feeds him the ball should he’s man leave to stop Evans penetration.

You we’re upset because I didn’t give PW more credit for improving our defense. OK, the defense did improve but it’s still in the bottom third of the league. And, I still stand by my statement that only rebounding made a significant jump because we ended up 10th in rebounding.

Not talking about those statistics. I know what those say.

I don’t deal in basic stats. You like them fine. But I’m not going to agree that using them works. So, you’re SOL on that one HT.

Exactly.

Of course, advanced stats are manipulations and just guestimations. So, all they are is dumb guess work of stat nerds looking to change the game from the almighty core stats that brought us so much more information before. < / snark >

So, the best player available down the road, isn’t a choice. All you can do as a GM is have an idea on how you want to build the team and what players look like they have the skills to work with the core players you already have

Wow, that debate really stuck in your craw didn’t it? You’re still bulldogging the idea that GMs cannot draft based on BPA, since they aren’t a bunch of Nostradamusi? Even with all evidence (including the words of Kings management themselves) to the contrary.

To add

If you draft based on skills and need, aren’t you prognosticating that those skills that were evident in college will translate to the NBA? That’s not an exact science either.

So I declare it UNPOSSIBLE for a GM to draft based on need, since they cannot know for sure that those needs will be met by the player over the long haul.

That’s right, I said it! UNPOSSIBLE!

Someone asked me my opinion and I gave it.

the fact that you don’t agree, doesn’t change my opinion, sorry.

Picking the BPA 4years down the road is at best an educated best, and if GM’s could do a great job at it than MJ would have been the #1 pick, and so would Kobe and alot of todays All-Stars.

The Fact is that I believe the best way to select talent is to pick the most skilled player that fits into the GM’s plan for the team, and hope that he turns into more than that. As far as importance, I place skill over athleticism, athleticism over size , and need over potential.

GM’s that got paid to make these types of decisions, have passed on players who based on general concensus at the time were the BPA (GP & JT). So, I’m going to have to disagree with you. It does seem to be a two way street thought, because you can’t seem to let it go either.

I never really research draft prospects until I know where we’re picking and who we’re working out.

but I’d be happy with either Favors, Cousins, or Johnson which is right where we are.
I think Johnson’s Rebounds are inflated by the zone at syr, and I’m a little skittish of his age. He’s actually older than most of our current team.

Nope.

The draft order was very much in the favor of Rubio dropping. Memphis and OKC were the key.

Agreed.

I think it’s inevitable that Wall replaces Gilbert, Turner goes to Philly to give the Iggy part deux(look for Philly to dump Iggy’s deal now). And that leaves Favors as the PERFECT fit in Jersey next to Lopez and with Harris running the show. Lee, Williams and CDR are capable wingmen. I think Yi gets dealt though.

Sure it’s not as good as the four that come before it, but I trust that Petrie will get us what we need.

Personally, I’m hoping for Wes Johnson purely because I think he is the BPA at #5 and because he would make an impact from day one.

What the Kings need is to find a defensive big either through trade or free agency to fill our gaping whole in the paint, (unless JT puts on some muscle and can guard opposing C, then I look forward to whatever that looks like).

I'm not convinced that Johnson's rebounding will translate

He played down low on the block in a zone so his numbers were inflated.

But he could be a good spot-up shooter playing off Evans. I guess I could see that. I think there are more talented players at #5 though. You’re basically drafting JR Smith at #5

by nbrans on May 18, 2010 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

by Aykis16 on May 18, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Rebounding in the NBA is usually determined more by strength though

The perimeter players who are good rebounders (LeBron, Bonzi in the day, Gerald Wallace) are really strong more than they’re strictly athletic/hungry for rebounds. In college Johnson was down low and bigger/more athletic than most of the opposing bigs he was up against.

I don’t think he’ll be a bad rebounder, I just don’t think his rebounding is really a reason to draft him. But we’ll see.

by nbrans on May 18, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

This

Johnson is a good rebounder, and an excellent scorer. I don’t look at drafting a SF as a bad thing, especially if we get an upgrade over one of our other SF’s.

That's because Martin and Cisco were hurt and he wanted size at the 2

so that the other team had to play their PG on Evans. Donte did his best work rebounding and blocking shots at the 4. But, he may be best suited at the 3 because of his ability to guard 3’s. So, I’m just saying that it wouldn’t hurt to move him to the 4 where he’ll be quicker than opposing 4’s, while he developes his inside game. He can always move back to the 3, and might end up like Odom.

From Ford's latest mock

He says we get Cousins:

While Cousins has the talent to be a top pick, he has scared away teams a bit with his on-court antics and a motor that sometimes moves to idle. But at No. 5, he would be a great pick for the Kings, giving them toughness, rebounding and a legitimate, low-post scorer. Teaming him with Carl Landry, Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes would give Sacramento a very good front line.

by Lotusprime on May 18, 2010 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

I agree with his Top 5

I don’t see the Dubs taking Aldrich at 6 though, I see them going with Aminu there.

Thinking about it more....

I think if the Wolves pass on Cousins they take Aminu. Think long term here. Kahn is INFATUATED with Rubio. Therefore he’s going to get players that fit with Rubio. Playing Brewer at the 3 and Aminu at the 4 gives the Wolves TWO elite finishers at the rim. Jefferson can play the 5 and he looks to deal Love for an elite shooter at the 2.

Cousins is our pick....

…if he’s available(at least I hope he would be, available and our pick).

We’re picking 5th. Noone has higher upside. He’s a legit 7 foot 280. No big man is as skilled as Cousins with maybe the exception of Monroe(also a good target if Cousins is gone whether to Minny or to a team that leap frogs us).

Adding Cousins gives us the girth that we need up front. He’s the best rebounder in college basketball which always translates from College to NBA.

We have both Thompson and Hawes to help play the 5 and take the pressure off of Cousins having to be THE MAN for us. If COusins acts up, we have Hawes. If he doesn’t we have Hawes to back him up.

It’s really a low-risk, HIGH-REWARD pick at a position AND SKILL-SET to boot.

C: Cousins, Hawes
PF: Landry, Thompson, Brockman
SF: Greene, Casspi, Nocioni
SG: Garcia, #33
PG: Evans, Udrih

We can now focus on back court players in Free Agency.

by Smills9133 on May 18, 2010 7:07 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I can't say this enough

It’s very likely that given who the top 4 teams are the Kings may get Cousins without having to move up. If they want Favors, that would be the difficult player to get.

I see us picking up a guard in Free Agency, and moving Cisco to backup
