A Quick Poll on Gilbert Arenas

In Chad Ford's latest update on NBA Draft Rumors (insider), he suggests that the Wizards may be seeking to shop Gilbert Arenas.  This is in spite of the fact that many project that Arenas might work well as a 2 guard next to John Wall.

If the Wizards seek to trade Arenas, they would do so with the understanding that they would be required to take some bad assets in return.  This would be a scenario similar to the Kings/Sixers Webber trade.  One bad contract for several contracts.  The Kings could offer Andres Nocioni and Francisco Garcia.

I offer you a quick poll, without further commentary.

I'm not saying he's a good deal

But I don’t think he’s done as a player. From a basketball standpoint I’d take Gilbert over Beno/Noc/Garcia in a heartbeat, even with injury and chemistry concerns. That’s a no-brainer to me. It’s just a question of whether it’s a reasonable risk given the salary. I still might do it, but it’s a gamble.

Gambling with max player money for that length of time

for a player that even at his best was a stretch as a max money guy, factor in he played like 15 games over 2 seasons because of knee injuries, gets back and then gets suspended for pulling a gun on a teammate.

I don’t know, just seems foolish to me.

by otis29 on May 19, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe so

I just feel like it would be a gamble with dead money that’s tied up anyway. It’s when you stretch it to the end of the contract that it gives me pause. That’s definitely something you might end up regretting, and then there’s the unknowable able the new CBA.

I think the risk is a bit overstated though – I mean, Noc and Garcia don’t look very tradeable, so that’s $15 million of dead weight right there. But I hear you on the potential albatross prat.

Keep in mind

that Arenas’ contract is so much bigger that it eats up a lot of our cap room that could be used toward a free agent or for strategic trades

Completely false.

I guarantee you that both are VERY trade-able.

Nocioni for his contract and Garcia for his play. Garcia is still an asset. He will contribute this year. Last year’s injury really screwed him (and us.)

All run the offense through themselves so…me thinks it won’t work. Unless we do a three-way trade with another team and we get a C/PF in return.

then we move Brand over to Washington for Zero and the #1 pick.

I'd feel better about it if it were Noc/Beno/Garcia

At that point you’re just swapping the salary of two guys (Noc and Garcia) who have little to no place on the team as it’s currently constructed, and Arenas plays the Beno role.

Don’t see how there’s a huge amount of downside to that. If Arenas gets back to being the player he could be, great. If not, oh well, that salary is just lumped into one player rather than three.

Yeah, the idea of paying Gilbert Arenas $22 million when he’s 32 isn’t so appealing, even if in that season he’s Gilbert Arenas Expiring Contract.

I’m less enthusiastic, but still not completely opposed.

by nbrans on May 19, 2010 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I think vfettke's point below makes it even scarier

Even if you decline the options on Noc and Garcia, their total contracts come to $29 million. You know Gil is getting his $80 million, so you are still adding $51 million in payroll over the next 4 years just to add Arenas.

For a guy that’s played 43 games the last 3 seasons??? Yikes!

I am SO with you.

I think this thread is absurd.

It would be BEYOND idiotic to add Arenas. It is like the Webber deal on steroids. We would be dead as a franchise for the next 4 years.

Arenas hasn’t even been good for about three years, and back then he was overpaid. Currently one of the worst contracts in sports. It would be paying 80 million dollars to destroy our team.

by Juan Primo on May 19, 2010 4:16 PM PDT reply actions

No

nbrans has some points about how Gil could basically do what Beno does and work well with Reke. Obviously he’s better than Beno. The problem I have is that Gil has 4 more years and about $80 mil left on that contract. Noc has 2 years and $12 million assuming the Kings waive his team option in the final year. Cisco has 3 years and $17 million if the Kings waive his team option in the 4th year. So as a whole, Cisco and Noc are cheaper and would both be off the books before Gil would be.

by Aykis16 on May 19, 2010 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, let's compare Gil's best year stats to Beno's

since Gil would basically be doing the same thing Beno is, regardless of whether or not Beno is involved in the trade.

Gil – 2005-06
29.3ppg – 6.0 apg – 3.5rpg – 44.7% FG%
2010-11 salary: $17,730,693

Beno – 2009-10
12.9ppg – 4.7 apg – 2.8rpg – 49% FG%
2010-11 salary: $6,478,600

Obviously Gil’s stats, which are from four years ago before the injuries and stupidity, are way better than Beno’s. However, Gil makes 2.7 times more next year than Beno. Is Gilbert 2.7 times more valuable than Beno? Not at all

With guys like Garcia, Noc and Udrih

The Kings have smaller pieces to break off and trade little by little to create cap room.

But what team in their right mind would be willing to take Gilbert Arenas’ contract in a couple years when the Kings are hurting for cap space with JT, Greene, Evans and others coming up for extensions, and the Kings getting into contention? No one.

Which then would bring us back to the question of which team in their right mind would trade 2 or 3 smaller pieces for Gilbert Arenas’ albatross of a contract? No one. So why should the Kings do it?

Making a trade like this is just so…wrong. You don’t trade a bunch of bad contracts for a ridiculous, franchise sinking contract. This is a MAX contract people. You know, Lebron Money. Wade Money. Kobe Money. Some people here wouldn’t give Amare the MAX, but you would trade for Arenas? Really? Come on.

This goes against everyhting the kings are trying to build. To get Arenas would limit our flexibility for 4 years with a ball dominating scorer on the downswing of his carreer. Oh yeah, and remember the fact that he doesn’t play defense? There is not 1 good think about this senario. So please, just stop.

The questions to ask:

1) Are Nocioni & Garcia ever going to be important cogs in the future of the franchise?

3) Is Arenas so utterly damaged that there is no chance of him playing at a high level ever again?

plus, you could probably pay Tyreke’s salary with the taxes Arenas pays

Um why not?

Garcia sucks and Nocioni is a grumpy bench player. Arenas at worst can backup Reke and/or Beno.

And in the last year

Reke’s inevitable extension is going to kick in too. Not to mention that Arenas’s contract will be unaffected by the CBA, so we’ll have a lot more money tied into a lot less players.

He's a great talent and would draw more coverage

But he’s not what the Kings need. They need a pure shooter on the wing (with size) who can defend and hit open shots consistently. And the Kings also need a true pg who can create shots for others. Not to say Arenas can’t pass, but he’s a shoot first guard.
His contract and knees also scare me. Not to mention fan backlash for signing an egotistical and attention hungry “star”.

But with the long-term salary of Arenas, Garcia & malcontent for crazy I wanna vote ….

One thing is for sure

Arenas is a shooter.

The problem is, this shooter points a friggin’ gun at the head of his teammate! And people shrug it off and then salivate over his talent?

You bring a shooter like Arenas to a young team, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.

No way.

It’s the same phenomenon that led to Lukenbill bringing in Ralph Sampson. Sure he’s a shell of his former self and is likely washed up, but dude! It’s Ralph Sampson!

I am shocked by the outcome of this poll

If we made this deal, here would be the net outlay for Arenas (after deducting for Noc and Cisco):
2010 – $5.4 million
2011 – $6.8 million
2012 – $14.7 million
2013 – $22.4 million

I can only think (and hope) that the majority of yes votes are coming via visitors from “Bullets Forever.” I wouldn’t do this deal if it included Blatche or McGee, much less as it is stated.

Wise words.

I’m amazed that people are even considering this. It is in no way a talent vs. talent issue. It is completely and entirely a financial one, and unless Petrie is dipping into the crazy pills he confiscated from Artest, there is no way that he handcuffs our team for years to come by taking on that albatross of a contract.

that's exactly why

I voted no. We’d be hating the trade in 2012 and 2013. He’s a good ball player, but for me, it’s about the contract.

We'd have to move out Beno's contract

And get back Blatche or McGee and a future first rounder from Washington just to start the conversation.

Absolutly not he has a four year 80 million dollar contract plus Reke made him look real bad so why would we put that scrub on a young and up coming team.

by awhite23 on May 20, 2010 9:09 AM PDT reply actions

If we won't take a guy that Reke made look bad

We might as well stand pat on any deal. Arenas is (was?) a very good player in the league. But this is way more of a financial issue than talent.

by otis29 on May 20, 2010 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely NO way!!!!!!!!

Aside from the fact that he is OBSCENELY expensive….

Aside from the fact that he is more delicate than toilet paper….

He is a titanic ball hog. How would Evans develop at all with Arenas dominating the ball?

Arenas is a volume shooter with a low shooting percentage, as well as a turnover machine – this comes while realizing that he is a veteran. He ISN’T getting better and more efficient.

This is NOT the player we want influencing Tyreke.

Petrie is known for this kind of trade I dont think its going to be a bad deal since Noc wants out and he is useless anyways, Garcia is always injured I think its just going to be a good deal for the kings.

People, people

(And when I say people, I’m addressing those of you who voted yes in the poll, therefore I mean the term to be loosely interpreted.)

If you are someone who has complained about Martin not being worth his contract because he was injured so often, then your yes vote is invalid.

If you are someone who believes that Tyreke Evans is not a point guard, then your yes vote is invalid.

If you are someone who would like to see us sign one of the top free agents this off-season, then your yes vote is invalid.

If you want to trace Noc because you think he’s a locker room cancer or otherwise a malcontent, then your yes vote is invalid.

To the remaining yes voters, go back to the Wiz blog.

Nobody with any amount of business or basketball sense could possibly think that this is a good idea for us.

Do you know why we traded Webber for what we traded him for? Cap flexibility. Especially on a rebuilding team, tying up that much money for one player for that long would destroy our cap flexibility. When you factor in that he has played 43 games in three years and has legal trouble to boot…

What are you thinking?
