Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Honestly, I've always thought Bosh is the most likely of the big free agents to leave, and this news does nothing to dissuade me. He's definitely getting his money too, as Toronto is amenable to the idea of a sign-and-trade.

And no, Virginia, the Sacramento Kings are not on his list.

Cant see a Sign & Trade happening

First if Bosh resigns for max money, NY and Mia don’t have enough players under contract for the salaries to match. and, since Tor is over the cap limit, the 125% +$100K salary match would be in affect.

Chicago is also under the limit but would have to send $15M back to match so the min they would have to give up is Noah and Deng. So, none of the teams he wants to go to have enough talent to match Bosh’s new contract.

Wait...what?

New York and Miami both have enough cap space to take his max deal straight up don’t they?

not necessarily

teams do sign and trades with cap space all the time. It creates a trade exception, if I recall correctly. Think that’s how Orlando got Rashard Lewis.

If Tor is only going to get cap space back in return, they have no reason for doing a sign & trade.

?

If Toronto trades Bosh, they are under the cap. These teams can take Bosh’s new contract without having to give anything up. Hence, the 125% rule does not apply.

For example, if Bosh went to Toronto for Chicago’s pick, Chicago would still be under the cap, and Toronto would get under the cap. No problem. Even if they did the deal for (example) Deng, the Bulls would be under the cap and the Raptors would be lowering their cap excess, which I think still makes the deal fly.

I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to this stuff, so maybe I’m missing something.

If Bosh were S&T 214

The 125% rule would apply. Only because Toronto would be over the cap at that point.

I guess what I was saying, the 3 teams have nothing to give Tor in return

Tor has no reason to do a S&T if they aren’t getting anything of value in return. Since Bosh’s new contract puts Tor approx $12M over the cap, they would have to take back less than $6M in contracts. For Mia that’s maybe Beasley. For Chicago that probably Noah. And, there’s no one on NY that Tor would want. If Tor wants Beasley maybe it happens. But, I’m not sure Bosh wants to go to Chi if they have to give up Noah to get him.

So, unless Tor could get Noah & Deng in trade, they’re better off just losing Bosh and getting the cap space.

Yes, that's a definite possibility

I guess I just couldn’t see Bosh hurting his new team just to get that extra year. Maybe Wade or Rose wouldn’t mind it though since they’d be getting another Star. and, Wade is going to get his money, so I guess he’s got nothing to complain about.

But, if I were Bosh, I would want to move to get a ring, since I can get the max by staying in Tor. And, raping your new team for talent to get the max, isn’t the best way to get a ring.

That extra year,

plus the increases equates to about $30 million. I could see Bosh costing his new team a draft pick in order to make an extra $30 million. Easily.

I had this conversation with Pookey

Bosh is 26 if he gets the 5yrs that’s available without the s&t, he’s still going to be 31 when it expires. This probably isn’t going to be his last contract. If so than he’ll get that extra year in his next contract. and, if the salary cap goes up with the economy the max in the next contract could ( i know that’s a big could) but it could be higher than the last year of his next contract. Remember Kobe just sign a 30 mil a year extension.

If this isn’t his last contract than the extra year doesn’t mean much. It really is only insurance for a career ending injury.

heh, the extra year is a metric f#ckton of money. It’s not just for insurance.

But stay optimistic HT! Maybe Bosh will be that elusive player that bypasses his first max contract, so he can worry about his contract 7 years from now.

My thinking is he'll get that last year in his next contract anyways

read above. But, your probably right, although I’ll bet some of the players that have had a great career but are defined by the fact that they never won a championship might regret it after they retire.

How does never having won a championship matter right now?

Currently, Chris Bosh plays basketball for the Toronto Raptors. He’s going to get his max deal, and probably dictate a trade to a team that has a better chance of winning a championship.

You don't think like an agent or a player

His agent is going to have no interest in passing up his cut of the extra $30 million – there is no guarantee that he is still going to be the agent when the next contract comes along.

For Bosh, get the guaranteed money now – you could get hurt in your next practice, the next CBA might change guaranteed contracts, etc.

It’s $30 million, and there is absolutel no guarantee that this money will be available for him at the end of this contract.

A trade exception is more valuable than just cap space

It would allow them to use the cap space and then acquire an additional player using the exception.

If Toronot lets Bosh walk without anything in return...

… what do you think the season ticketholder response will be?

This is why a sign and trade is going down, if Bosh is leaving, even if it’s a crummy deal for Toronto. They need to get something in return, even if it’s Taj Gibson and a future draft pick.

by Kevin Conroy on May 21, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

They will get a shiny new draft pick next year.

Maybe that player will turn out to be a #1 instead of a #2 who demands to be paid and treated like a #1.

by bignerd on May 21, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly right

And it’s why (if the story is accurate) Toronto has already said they are interested in the sign-and-trade.

This is why I think LeBron and Wade will be in the same boat. They will sign max contracts with their current teams and either stay and play or be moved in a S&T.

I don't think that's far fetched.

I can’t imagine how any S&T brings back value for Cleveland. At least in Toronto, they’re already a crappy team. But the whole Cleveland team is already built AROUND LeBron as it is. You either stay and take the money or you leave and take less somewhere else.

That’s how I’d play it.

I've been wondering if Cleveland's front office has the guts to do it

These teams always take the extra step to accommodate their fleeing star player but in this case LeBron is so good I think they have to treat it like a divorce and take a bitter, selfish stance. Say screw it, if you want the extra $30 mil, go get some more endorsement deals.

by Kevin Conroy on May 22, 2010 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup KC. I'm wondering the same thing myself.

Or, if they can convince LeBron to stay. I don’t really have any high opinion of LeBron t hough. He’s a spoiled brat regardless of how this ends. He’s trying to have this both ways, and you can’t have it both ways in this world.
