Bite… WILL BE YOUR LAST!!
Ugh…. All I will say is that this is what makes Cousins so much more attractive at 5-10 and so very very scary for teams drafting 1-4.
If we somehow are left with Cousins staring at us at the #5 pick, I foresee an avalanche of trade offers. We would be wise to consider them very carefully.
Cousins seems like a pretty competitive dude
My hope would be that he would realize that his fitness and conditioning is directly related to his success (and his $$$), and his competitiveness would keep his fitness and conditioning on track. Or, he could be the NBA version of JaMarcus Russell, and we’re all greatly disappointed. It is a risk. If you put Shaq on one side of the coin and JaMarcus Russell on the other side, I’m willing to flip that coin with the #5 pick.

I certainly agree with this
If you put Shaq on one side of the coin and JaMarcus Russell on the other side, I’m willing to flip that coin with the #5 pick.
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!
Really?
As a Raider fan as well, I have a hard time going down that road.
Also, I would think that the odds are far from a coinflip. One should be able to gain some ability from interviews and workouts as to what kind of player Cousins will be—a Shaq or a Russell

agreed....intstead of a coin...
how about a six-sided die, with Shaq on one side, and Miller or Russell on the the other five sides….would you roll that die with the 5th pick?

I wasn't trying to say that the odds are 50-50, though I figured someone would think that
I just meant that, to me, Cousins’ best-case scenario or ceiling is worth the risk of his worst-case scenario or bust potential. Obviously, the most likely thing to happen is that he’d end up somewhere in-between “Shaq” and “total bust”. Anyone that we draft is a risk to some degree and there’s no sure thing, but you’re right that it’s not a total shot in the dark.
In any case, what it comes down to for me is that Cousins’ potential excites me more than his risk scares me.

with all seriousiness
the Jamarcus Russell comparison needs to stop. That is a completely different situation.

Thank you.
Cousins ain’t gonna be Russell. Because he never had any intention of playing quarterback in the NFL. Admittedly, some might argue that about Russell…
Cousins isn’t gonna be Shaq, either. There is only one, and I’d be surprised to see that kind of skill set and physical attributes again in my lifetime.
He’s going to be whatever he’s going to be, we just don’t know if it’ll be here or someplace else.

Well that's no fun.

what about the Oliver Miller comparison?
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."
as in doesn't that seem a little ridiculous
"When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges."
Well, Miller was 22 when he was drafted, and probably more set in his ways
Cousins would be playing along side some very dedicated players his own age. I feel that their good example, and peer pressure, could help Cousins improve his life style. He is already dedicated to being one of the best, and with winning. Sometimes the right friends is all that’s needed.

This is the Kings we're talking about though
You’d trust something Kings related to luck?

This is the scary part
I giggle a bit when anyone assumes Cousins will be magically whipped into shape by the lure of an NBA contract and the fact that he will have access to professional trainers/dieticians. If you don’t have respect for your body (and the desire to be in your best physical condition), odds are you won’t suddenly change your mindset.
However, maybe Cousins’ talent is still good enough to make him a solid big man in the league (quite possible). Maybe he is determined enough to at least be in adequate shape each season.
If those questions are answered to Petrie’s satisfaction, then he’s a steal at the #5.
Pacifist ass-kisser
In defense of cousins,
He wont be making 10 million a year on his rookie contract.
huh? wha?

Open Question: Suppose Cousins is taken 5th, you deal him to the Pistons for what?
by getPGwithbounce on May 30, 2010 10:03 PM PDT reply actions
Nobody.
You keep him. Pistons roster is not good.

This is correct.

I won't argue that analysis.
That holds no appeal for the minor price of dropping 2 spots?

Depends.
If who you would take will be there two spots later, then go for it. If not, then it’s not worth it.
That said, the Pistons are spending money like a win-now team. I don’t see them giving up young productive talent for a rebuild, unless they miraculously find themselves disposing of CV and BG’s contracts.
I will add this caveat: if players were stocks, I’d be buying lots of CV and BG, because I expect a significant increase in their production this oncoming season, as well as one year less on the books, they might be worthwhile trade pieces next summer for interested teams (this is taking a huge gamble that the new CBA does not lower player contracts). Buy low sell high!

would have to be 7th pick and they take Nocioni and Cisco's contracts
So Cisco, 5th pick, and Nocioni for Tayshaun and 7th pick where Kings could select another great player in a deep big man draft
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
yep, dump contracts & take the #7
and player (maybe?) and/or draft pick in ’11 or ’12
if Kings don’t want the risk of Cousins, then presumably “their” guy will be there @ 7, whether that’s Monroe, Aminu, Aldrich, Whiteside, or Henry …. but the key is dumping more wasted salary, if possible. Getting a winner like Prince who plays D for Noc/Garcia would be a plus, but his salary is high.
So I still say, roll the dice on Cousins.
Did this article strike anyone as insensitive and over the top?
Not to mention, it throws out ridiculous stats like Shaq and Kaman being the only guys out of 49 to make an all-star team, ignoring the fact that many of those 49 didn’t even get draft. I’m not a fat guy but I found this article and it’s premise pretty rude- look at the caption under Oliver Miller’s pic, the John “hot plate” Williams reference and the overall tone. Bad form ESPN.
The Sacramento Convergence concept offers Sacramento, the Central Valley, and the State a solution to feasibly construct a new multi-use Entertainment and Sports Complex.
Also,
It would be interesting to flip that script. That is, how many of the 50 most fit guys made an all start team.
I’m not defending Cousins here, but I think that the combine numbers get way too much attention. Perhaps it is because the personal workouts are just beginning, so there is no other news yet. My take is that these numbers are as beneficial to the NFL’s search for tight ends (Antonio Gates, hello!) as they are to the NBA.
Larry Bird and Magic Johnson would have probably not fared too well at this combine, and Barkley’s measurements would have dropped him into the 2nd round.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
The most recent big with weight problems I can think of is Marc Gasol
He dropped weight and turned into a pretty good player, so you never know. These guys don’t always turn into Oliver Miller.
The one thing I will say is DeMarcus is he’s only 19 and has been at Kentucky for just one year (where he should have received some guidance about his diet).
When I think back to my first year of college, I didn’t exactly have the best diet (a lot of pizza and beer). With some guidance and discipline, he has the possibility of really getting into good shape and becoming a little quicker and more athletic. Everyone is worried about him ballooning, but he could go the other direction and get better.
That is a good point about his being in college for one year.
Most college students, myself included, gained weight in their first year of college, commonly referred to the Freshman 15, Freshman 30, and Freshman 40. Of note, it was more commonly referred to the Freshman 15 back-in-the-day, whereas people are gaining more nowadays.

Yeah! It was a little bit over the top.
This photo of Cousins is unsettling, though. Should be a wake-up call to him to hit the gym and drop 20 or 30 pounds.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
16% body fat is a red flag, no doubt
And refusal to do the bench press. That’s two red flags.
How long has it been since Kentucky season ended? About 8 weeks. Has DeMarcus ever heard of P90X? He could be half way through the program!
I recall the year Kevin Love got drafted he kicked ass in the gym leading up to the draft, and impressed everybody, and helped his draft stock immensely. No such transformation from DMC.
At 18 years old his metabolism is through the roof. All he has to do is cut out sugar, pasta and bread and all that delicious crap, and the weight will fall off. And he should do interval training (high intensity cycle) for 60 minutes a day. ANY strength and conditioning coach can relay this information in five minutes. If he is not following the advice, he either doesn’t care, or is too immature to act in his own best interest.
I wonder about the Kings strength and conditioning team. Sean May got fatter over the course of the season. Certainly much of the responsibility falls upon the individual, but that doesn’t bode well for a new player with a weight issue entering the Kings fold.
Regardless, the hope would be when an impressionable young player joins a new family, and in effect this is what occurs for 8 months of the year, he is influenced by players with superior experience and knowledge of the NBA, and the path to success. He grows to befriend and respect his teammates and coaches, and their work ethic and professionalism rubs off on him , and he gets his fat butt into shape.
If he ends up here, Tyreke Evans, Paul Westphal, Truck Robinson, Donte Greene, JT and Cisco Garcia would serve as strongest influences.
An ounce of humility couldn’t DMC hurt either. Carrying around a Hello Kitty backpack as a rookie is just what this guy needs; he’ll burn a few calories and get his ego in check.
Yay! Professional writing!
Well, that’s comforting. Not.
A fairly decent article, and he had to ruin it with an attempt to be…what? Cute? Relevant to 11 year-olds? BORAT?

To hell with it, let’s not draft anyone. That’s what Ridiculous Downside suggests.

I am not saying that DeMarcus Cousins is taking any psychotropic medication, as has been rumored.
I will say that a number of medications to treat depression or bipolar disorder, such as Effexor or Lithium commonly have side effects, such as weight gain.
I am not saying that Cousins takes these or any other medications. Just saying.

I'm not saying Slam_Dunk molests collies.
I will say that people who have used the internet have, on occasion molested collies. Just saying.

I didn't major in Common F-cking Sense, but ...
There's plenty of "safe" players we could pick up in the development league (CBA or whatever league that's out there now)
The Kings need to go for the home run. 80% of the Kings roster has pretty good (safe) players. Take a risk!
